Palace Saloon 5K course moves in 2011

The starting line of the 2011 Palace Saloon 5K is moving to Tallahassee Community College, 444 Appleyard Drive, with race day registration and packet pick-up taking place outside the T. K. Wetherell History and Social Science Building (HSS 39) on 16 April 2011.

On April 5 I learned that a Motocross event had reserved Messer Park on Saturday, April 16. There didn't seem to be an acceptable way of sharing the facility. The race needed a new starting location and a new course and we needed them both quickly.

I drew up a new course that started at Tallahassee Community College. Judy Alexander and Jeanne O'Kon worked to get approval from the Tallaahassee Police Department, the Leon County Sheriff's Office, and the Tallahassee Community College police. From TCC, the race will head south on Appleyard Dr to Jackson Bluff Rd, east on Jackson Bluff Rd to Chipley St, south on Chipley St to Plant St, east on Plant St to Mabry St, north on Mabry St to Jackson Bluff Rd, and east on Jackson Bluff Rd to the Palace Saloon.

This isn't the first course change for the Palace Saloon, but it will be the first time that the race hasn't started from Messer Park since 1975, when the race was run in the sugar sand out at Natural Bridge. This year's starting venue should have plenty of parking and access to indoor plumbing. It's farther from the finish line than Messer Park was, but I am confident that the Palace Saloon 5K runners of 2011 will be every bit as resourceful as their predecessors when it comes to making their way back to their cars.

And the finish line is still at the Palace Saloon.
