Francis goes 4-0 while Raa boys win when it counts

Fronted by Evan Francis' race-winning 11:42 two-mile cross-country run, the Raa boys picked up their first win of the 2011 season by winning the Leon County Schools middle school title for the eighth year in a row. The Raa team scored 58 points in the meet at Apalachee Regional Park Trail, just four points ahead of runner-up Montford and only eleven points up on third-place Swift Creek. As for Francis, it was his fourth win of the four-meet LCS season, having preceded the championship meet with victories at Battle at Tom Brown (7 September 2011), the Fort Braden Meet (14 September 2011), and the Owl Run (22 September 2011).

The meet opened with the girls' race at 6:00PM; the boys got their turn at the starting line at 6:30. By the end of the first kilometer the dust had settled from the initial stampede, and Raa's Evan Francis was out in front, a couple of seconds ahead of Adam Wallenfelsz of Montford. After a trip through the piney woods Francis had five seconds on Adam Wallenfelsz, while the Montford runner was shadowed by a group of four athletes--Shawn Nerney (Deerlake), Alex Holm (Cobb), Aiden Sailor (Montford), and Dylan Price (Deerlake). During the second half of the race, Francis opened an ever wider gap on the field and Adam Wallenfelsz dropped out of contention. Nerney and Price shrugged off Sailor and Holm, then, running side by side, fought for second place. Francis went on to win by nearly 50 meters in 11:42, and Nerney outkicked his teammate Price for the runner-up spot, 11:52 to 11:53. Behind them, Raa's James Dodson had worked his way up from twelfth place at the end of the first kilometer to finish fourth.

The Montford boys had earned wins at Fort Braden and the Owl Run, but those victories had been led by top ten performances by Adam Wallenfelsz. Even so, Montford's depth kept the team in the contest. Raa, Montford and Swift Creek each had two runners in the top ten and four in the top twenty (five in the case of Montford), but it was Raa with low score of 58 and the 2011 league championship. Montford took the runner-up trophy home with 62 points. Swift Creek, winners of the 2011 season opener at Tom Brown Park, settled for third with 69.

Sheldon leads Swift Creek to victory in the 2011 LCS Meet

Zoe SheldonLed by the one-two finish of Zoe Sheldon and Cheyenne Hildinger, the Swift Creek Middle School girls' cross-country team finished a perfect 4-0 season with a victory at the 2011 Leon County Schools' middle school championship meet, held Wednesday evening, September 28, on the Apalachee Regional Park Trail. Swift Creek's five scoring runners tallied 31 points, well ahead of Montford's runner-up score of 77. Seventh-grade runner Sheldon ran the two-mile course in 13:24 for the individual title, while her sixth grade teammate Hildinger posted a 13:34. Sheldon had finished third in the race in 2010, her first year in middle school.

Cheyenne HildingerAbout 150 girls lined up for the 6:00PM start of the race. At the sound of the starting siren they charged east across the first field. By the end of the first kilometer, Swift Creek's Cheyenne Hildinger was leading the runners on the crushed-shell trail along the moat, with Ana Wallace of Deerlake and Zoe Sheldon of Swift Creek about four seconds back. Half a kilometer later, after the race had wound through the Piney Woods and turned back west, Hildinger maintained her lead, but Sheldon moved up into sole possession of second, while Deerlake's Alex Wallace was now running in fourth place. Early in second mile Sheldon grabbed the lead, and proceeded to run away from Hildinger and rest of the field. In the end, Sheldon beat Hildinger going away, 13:24 to 13:34. Alex Wallace passed Ana Wallace late in the race to take third, 13:47 to 13:49. Swift Creek put two more runners, Katie Jones (6th, 14:07) and Sydney Aparicio (9th, 14:15), in the top ten, then sealed their 31-point victory with a 13th-place finish by Asta Hemenway. Led by Jewels Krueger (8th, 14:13), Montford placed runner-up with 77 points, while Alex and Ana Wallace's performances set up Deerlake's third-place score of 91 points. Defending champion Raa Middle School placed fourth with 98.

This was the second straight year that the Leon County Schools' middle school championship meet was held on the Apalachee Regional Park Trail, which was first opened in 2009. The girls' championship race was followed at 6:30PM by the boys' championship race.

Davison, Merritt battle to Rebel Run 5K victories in Marianna

[ From a report by Mark McCarra. Thanks, Mark! ]

Mississippi has Vicksburg, Atlanta has Sherman's March, and northern Virginia is carpeted with Civil War battlefields, but Florida was never a major theater of war in the Rebellion of 1861-1865. Loyal Floridians thus embrace what Civil War history we have. Lake City celebrates the Battle of Olustee, and Tallahassee the Battle of Natural Bridge. And the Panhandle treasures its memories of the Battle of Marianna. Marianna, Florida marked the 147th anniversary of the 27 September 1864 battle with the Marianna Day festival, which included re-enactments, a parade, and educational exhibits. And for the first time, this year's Marianna Days included a 5K "Rebel Run" road race on Saturday, 24 September 2011. The inaugural Rebel Run 5K title went to Marianna firefighter Davin Davison in 20:40, just ahead of runner-up and top master Mark McCarra in 20:47. The women's race was not nearly as close, with Ashley Merritt running 26:03 and finishing nearly 700 meters ahead of the next woman. Lori Kibler was the fastest female master in the race, posting 36:05 for the 3.1-mile distance.

Davison shared the lead with Buddy Baxter for the first kilometer, but the second kilometer was all Davison's, and he passed the mile mark alone in 5:53, 25 seconds up on the field. During the third kilometer Davison continued to lead, but Mark McCarra had moved into second and was starting to close the gap, moving to within 18 seconds of Davison at the halfway point. McCarra continued to gain on Davison, but never quite caught the firefighter, who held on to win 20:40 to 20:47.

The 2011 Rebel Run 5K started and finished at the Marianna Citizen's Lodge and included a tour through the hilly campus of Chipola College. The 25 runners were serenaded at the finish by Civil War period fife music performed by a reenactor.

Avenger and Reichert bully Bethany Baptist Bridge Runners in Hahira

Behold, the Masked AvengerIn 2010 Hahira's Bethany Baptist Church held their first 5K Bridge Run. Dale Smith won that one, leaving Valdosta's Masked Avenger almost 200 meters behind. On Saturday, 24 September 2011 the Bridge Run was back. Smith wasn't there to defend to his title, but the Avenger was their seeking redemption. He found it, running to a course record 17:57 win in the second annual race. Runner-up Wes Hand of Nashville, Georgia ran 18:55, trailing the Avenger by close to 300 meters. Valdosta State freshman cross-country runner Cory Alden placed third in 21:30. Hahira's Frank Ryan (4th, 23:04) was the fastest master in the field, beating Valdosta master runners Shannon Shockley (5th, 23:36) and Tony Daugherty (6th, 24:05).

Christina Reichert was the fastest woman in the race, placing seventh overall in 24:15 to finish about 100 meters ahead of the second woman in, Hahira's Misty Moreno (10th, 24:45). Valdosta's Amanda Merck ran 25:00 to place third among the woman, while Valdosta's Nancy Elam was the first female master at 25:11.

Martinez and Yinger prevail at Prefontaine 5K

Michael MartinezHalf a hundred runners gathered outside of Tallahassee at the Silver Lake Recreation Area of the Apalachicola National Forest on Saturday morning, 24 September 2011, for the 36th annual edition of the Salute To Prefontaine 5K. When the running was over, Tallahassee master runner Michael Martinez had crossed the line first in 19:08, about 70 meters ahead of runner-up Roger Schmidt. It was the second cross-country running match-up for Martinez and Schmidt in a month; four weeks earlier they had finished ninth and tenth at the Miller Landing Madness 8K, where they were only five seconds apart.

Olivia Swedberg YingerThe fastest woman in the field was Olivia Swedberg Yinger of Tallahassee, who raced the five kilometers through the sand and palmettos in 22:31, placing 10th overall. Yinger finished nearly 100 meters ahead of the second place woman, Tallahassee's Brook Pace (11th, 23:04). Just seven days after directing the 2011 Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival, Lisa Unger claimed the top woman master spot in the race, coming in 26th overall at 28:36 as the race's fourth woman finisher.

Each year since Steve Prefontaine's death in 1975, the Gulf Winds Track Club has staged the Salute To Prefontaine 5K as a tribute to the Oregon distance runner. A variety of race directors have changed the course frequently over the years, but it has always been in the Apalachicola National Forest. This may change in the future; the race's permit with the Forest Service runs out in 2011. Whatever happens, this race has already endured twelve years longer than Prefontaine himself.

Nothing damp about Sheldon and Francis's Owl Run victories

Zoe SheldonUnder cloudy skies and an intermittent drizzle, the Swift Creek Middle School cross-country team scored 35 points to take first in an eight-team field in the girls' race at the 25th annual Owl Run on Thursday morning, 22 September 2011. Zoe Sheldon led the team, taking the individual title in the two-mile event in 13:43. Raa Middle School's Evan Francis was the top finisher in the boys' two-mile race, posting an 11:56, but Montford's cross-country squad slipped by Raa 55 to 56 to take team honors.

Cheyenne Hildinger and Zoe SheldonBaseball may have rain delays, but cross-country runners are made of sterner stuff, and the meet went on as scheduled in spite of the weather. Swift Creek's Cheyenne Hildinger, who had won the Battle at Tom Brown on 7 September 2011 grabbed an early lead. But her Swift Creek teammate--Zoe Sheldon, winner of the previous week's Fort Braden meet--soon pulled even. At the mile mark the two Swift Creek athletes were running side by side. Early in the first mile Sheldon broke away, going on to record a 13:43 win. Meanwhile, Ana Wallace of Deerlake overtook Hildinger to snatch the runner-up spot, 14:01 to 14:04. In addition to Sheldon and Hildinger, Swift Creek also put two other runners in the top ten, Katie Jones (8th, 14:42) and Sydney Aparicia (9th, 14:50). Swift Creek's fifth runner, Lexie McElroy, ran 15:19 to place 14th, giving the team 35 points and the victory. Montford was runner-up with 77 points, just ahead of third place Deerlake with 80. Defending champions Raa were fourth with 86.

Evan FrancisIn the boys' race, Evan Francis of Raa Middle School didn't go right to the front, but took the lead during the first mile. Francis passed the mile mark in 5:47, about four seconds ahead of the second runner, Griffin Middle School's Emanuel Godfrey. Francis widened the gap on the field in the second half of the race, running to victory in 11:56. With 200 meters to go, Deerlake's Austin Dodson had overtaken Godfrey to move into second, but James Dodson of Raa and Adam Wallenfelsz of Montford were right behind them and moving up. Raa's James Dodson charged down the final stretch, beating out Deerlake's Austin Dodson for the runner-up spot, 12:11 to 12:12. Behind them, Wallenfelsz overtook a fading Godfrey for fourth, 12:16 to 12:19. Those or any similar close finishes may very well have decided the team title; Montford took first by a single point over defending champ Raa, 55 to 56. Swift Creek put three runners in the top ten, more than any other team, but couldn't close the deal and ended up third with 67 points.

The Owl Run is the Leon County Schools' oldest cross-country meet, and the penultimate meet of 2011. The season closes on Wednesday, 28 September 2011, with the Leon County Schools' championship meet at Apalachee Regional Park Trail.
