Guillen and McCann battle to victory in Warrior 5K

Warrior Walk 5KThere was a time in the the late 1970s and early 1980s when it seemed like Messer Park was the default location for 5K road races in Tallahassee, Florida. No one was surprised when a new 5K event was announced and the course was two laps around the block at Messer. Messer still gets used now and then, but the go-to venue for Tallahassee now seems to be Maclay Gardens State Park. The Sunderg Memorial 5K, the Marzuq Mother's Day 5K, and the 5K running leg of the Red Hills Triathlon are all held in the park annually, with other races added to the schedule now and then. On Saturday morning, 23 February 2013, the Thank-A-Soldier Organization of Florida State University made their own addition to Maclay's roster of events--the first Warrior Walk 5K.

Originally scheduled for 9:00 AM ET, then rescheduled the night before for 9:45 AM ET, the race ended up starting close to 9:15. There was no scheduling uncertainty about Tony Guillen's arrival at the finish line, though. The Tallahassee master runner was the first to finish the 3.1-mile race, clocking a precise 18:24. FSU Army ROTC cadet Alexander Spook followed Guillen into the finish, taking the runner-up spot in 18:40. Peter Kaus was third in 19:00, and Tony Berardi ran 19:35 for fourth. FAMU ROTC's Peter Falcone took fifth in 20:05.

Molly McCann and Katherine ResavageTony Guillen finished the race with a lead of over 150 meters, but the margin was much narrower in the female competition. Holy Comforter Episcopal School cross-country runners Molly McCann and Katherine Resavage were just a step or two apart as the end of the 5K approached. McCann pulled ahead just before the finish line, prevailing over Resavage 22:56 to 22:57. The two runners finished 13th and 14th overall respectively. At 23:52 Fairview Middle School cross-country alumna Talise Jager-Sumner was the third female. In a battle for fourth, Sarah Mrazek edged out Holy Comforter's Gray Kinch 24:01 to 24:03.

In spite of the mix-up about the starting time and a record rainfall the night before, over 200 athletes finished the inaugural Warrior Walk 5K. Proceeds from the race went to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.
