Maclay sweeps one on the slopes at the Ski Lift Invite

Nature abhors a vacuum, and so does the cross-country calendar. In Tallahassee, Florida, after the 2013 Lincoln Invitational cross-country meet was canceled, Maclay School scheduled the Ski-Lift Invitational for the open date, Saturday, 7 September 2013. 112 athletes from five different schools ran in the meet, held at Phipps Park--site of the earlier Cougar Challenge and the preseason Miller Landing Madness. However, the Ski-Lift races were held in a different part of the park, farther east near the soccer fields and the utility line trail known as "the ski lift."

Competition opened with the girls' 5K race. Maclay frosh runners Caroline Willis and Mollie McCann took the first two places, posting times of 21:57 and 22:31 on the hilly 3.1-mile course. Led by Willis and McCann, the Marauders took six of the first eight places scoring a mathematically unbeatable 21 points to place first in the four-team field. Langlee Toothman, a Florida State University School junior, finished third in 22:49, leading her team to edge out Lincoln for second place, 63 to 65.

North Florida Christian senior Griffith Rutherford followed up his second-place finish at the Cougar Challenge a week earlier with a 17:14 win in the boys' 5K at the Ski Lift meet. Maclay senior Connor Daughton was well back in second at 17:29, and Lincoln's Hunter Scott was third in 17:45. North Florida Christian was successful in putting four runners in the top ten, with Rutherford joined by Luke Strickland (4th, 17:47), Garrett Grant (7th, 19:01), and Alex Kallinger (9th, 19:13). But Maclay put all five of their scorers in the top ten, as Daughton was followed by Jack Rutledge (5th, 17:58), Jake Mazziotta (6th, 18:06), Garrett Grant (7th, 19:01), and Steven Simpkins (9th, 19:13). That was enough to give Maclay a 30 to 39 edge over NFC, giving first place among the five teams to the Marauders. Lincoln was third with 67 points.
