Kelly and Jarnigan cash in at Dollars For Scholars

Three years ago I mentioned the proliferation of road races hosted by elementary schools in Valdosta, Georgia. Middle schools and high schools are also in that game, and several Valdosta State University organizations as well. Georgia Military College at Valdosta joined in on Saturday morning, 28 June 2014, hosting their inaugural Dollars For Scholars 5K.


Ryan Kelly of Lake Park, Georgia, won the first-year race in 18:50, finishing over 400 meters ahead of the next runner. Valdosta master runner Rick Mazurkiewicz placed second overall in 20:36. Casey Ellis took third in 20:48, and DeShon Taylor was fourth in 21:23.


Valdosta State University cross-country runner Danielle Jarnigan was the top woman in the race, placing eighth overall in 22:25. Alice Smoot of Valdosta was second in the women's standings and the first woman master, finishing ninth overall in 22:40.


60 athletes finished the race, which started and finished on the Georgia Military College Valdosta campus. Georgia Military College is a two-year school where students can earn an associates degree. Race proceeds from the Dollars For Scholars 5K went to the GMC Scholarship Fund. Timing and finish line services were provided by A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta.
