A Swift Creek sweep at Fort Braden

Lawton CampbellUnlike 2013, there were no weather delays. Leon County Schools' 2014 middle school cross-country season started as scheduled at 6:00 PM on September 3 with the fifth annual Fort Braden Run. Swift Creek swept the team titles, while Deerlake's Lawton Campbell won the girls' two-mile race and Montford's Bryan McKnight triumphed in the boys' two-mile event.

The meet and the 2014 season opened with the girls' race. The course at the Fort Braden Run starts in Fort Braden Community Park, then before the end of the first quarter mile funnels down to cross a narrow footbridge. Deerlake eighth-grader Lawton Campbell may not have been the first runner off the starting line, but she was first to the bridge. Crossing the planks, Campbell led the field on a circuit of the grounds of Fort Braden School before returning across the bridge to the park, still leading. Campbell cruised through the last lap of the park and crossed the finish line in 13:13, the fastest winning time in the girls' race in the five-year history of the Fort Braden Run.

The defending champs from Swift Creek, however, took the next two places, with seventh-graders Alyson Churchill and Megan Churchill running 13:26 and 3:41 for second and third. Together with Campbell, Emily Molen (6th, 13:55) and Grace Jackson (9th, 14:16) gave Deerlake three runners in the top ten. Swift Creek, however, had four in the top ten, once Chase Merrick (7th, 13:56) and Emma Romuald (8th, 14:08) had crossed the line. McIver Levy (16th, 16:17) was Swift Creek's fifth scorer, bringing their team total to a winning 36 points, just ahead of Deerlake's 39. Montford was third in the girls' team standings with 78.

Bryant McKnightLawton Campbell was first across the bridge in the girls' race, but you don't have to be first across the bridge to win the Fort Braden Run. Sukhi Khosla wasn't first across the bridge in 2010 when he won the boys' race at the first Fort Braden Run. In 2014, Montford eighth-grader Bryant McNight wasn't first across the bridge in the boys' race. McNight wasn't even tenth across the bridge. But McNight was the first runner to return over the bridge, and he was the first across the finish line, winning the boys' two mile in 13:00. Ky Peltier of Swift Creek was runner-up in 13:13.

With McNight's win and a 13:27 fifth-place finish from A J Hodges, things were looking good for the defending champion Montford Mustangs in the team standings.  Swift Creek, however, followed up Peltier's second-place finish and Yunus Kovankaya's sixth-place 13:29 with performances from Weston Blake (12th, 13:55), Nick Molinaro (13th, 14:00), and Calvin McGinnis (27th, 14:42). That gave Swift Creek 60 points and the win. Fairview was a close second with 64 points, and Deerlake was third with 72. Montford, champions in 2013, were fourth with 79 points.
