McPherson and Lichner are Dothan's paramount pilgrim pursuers

PilgrimsAmericans rush out of their homes on the day after Thanksgiving, and it's widely accepted that this is to take advantage of all the great "Black Friday" sales. The prices aren't that great, though, and going to the store on that day is like going sightseeing in Dante's Inferno. I think people are just willing to go anywhere to escape a house that has been reeking of turkey for a day or more.

By Saturday the need for fresh air has become even more desperate. Fortunately for the folks of Dothan, Alabama, they don't have to go to the mall to get out of the house that day. They can head over to Westgate Park and do the Pilgrim Chase 5K Trail Run.

Adam McPherson came up from Fort Walton Beach, Florida, for the 29 November 2014 edition of the annual run. Just seven days after he had raced the Timberlake Half Marathon, McPherson won the Pilgrim Chase, covering the 3.1-mile course around Westgate Park in 18:41. Dothan's Julio Garcia was runner-up in 20:02. Dothan master runner Dale Thomas placed third in 20:34.

Master runner Val Lichner of Bonifay, Florida, was the women's champion, running 23:07 for seventh overall. Aurianna Peart, formerly a distance runner at Weber High in Pleasant View, Utah, was the women's runner-up, finishing tenth overall in 23:46. Sydney Jeffcoat picked up some experience racing Westgate Park earlier in the fall while competing as an eighth grader on the Houston Academy cross-country team; she used that experience to take third in the women's standings at the Pilgrim Chase, finishing 11th overall in 23:50.

97 athletes finished the Dothan Runners'2014 Pilgrim Chase 5K Trail Run.

Beauchamp and Genovar repeat at Swine Time

Evan BeauchampEvan Beauchamp lives in Smyrna, but he is a son of Bainbridge, Georgia. He's also a marathon runner. As a marathoner, he spent much of November running long distances. On Nov. 7 he ran 2:45:46 in the Savannah Rock and Roll Marathon, finishing seventh and qualifying for the Boston Marathon. On Nov. 27 was in Tallahassee for the Turkey Trot, but he ran a little farther than the prescribed 15K.

"Me and a guy I was running with went about half a mile off course," explained Beauchamp.

The regulation 9.3 miles just wasn't far enough for a marathoner. Even with the detour, Beauchamp finished tenth in 57:17. Two days later Beauchamp was back on the roads, this time in Climax, Georgia, just east of his old home town of Bainbridge. He was there for the annual Climax Swine Time 5K. It may have only been 3.1 miles, but Beauchamp won the race for the second year in a row, running 17:40.

Dre BanksThe race started at 8:30 AM near the Swine Time Fairgrounds in Climax. Justin Nunamaker was the early leader, but Atlanta West Stride's Evan Beauchamp was right with him. After half a mile the runners were out of town, headed north on the Salem Church Road. On that quiet stretch of highway, Beauchamp ran away from Nunamaker. When the athletes turned around at the halfway point, starting the return to the fairgrounds, Beauchamp was already 100 meters ahead of Nunamaker. Beauchamp continued to widen the gap on the way back to the finish line. Meanwhile, University of West Georgia cross-country runner Dre Banks was starting to close on Nunamaker.

When Beauchamp crossed the finish line first in 17:40, Banks was just a few steps behind Nunamaker with a little more than 200 meters left to race. Banks stepped on the gas after the final turn with less than 100 meters to go. His kick was enough to give him second place over Nunamaker, 18:34 to 18:37. Former Swine Time champion Greg Waddell was the fastest master runner in the field, placing sixth in 21:30.

Julie GenovarThe women's competition also had a repeat winner as 2013 champion Julie Genovar of Bainbridge returned to run 23:48, placing 14th overall and taking the women's title. Genovar led the women's field from the start, finishing nearly 200 meters ahead of runner up Chelsey Beauchamp's 24:39. Paige Hildebrand was third in the women's standings with a 25:37. Sandra Canada of Woodville, Florida, was the first woman master in the race and fourth woman overall, running 26:10.

The Swine Time 5K isn’t an enormous race, but it draws more than its share of out-of-town runners. With so much of the world being outside of Climax, Georgia, this shouldn’t be surprising. You can make a similar argument for the hills on the course.

Chelsey Beauchamp“I didn’t think Climax would be so hilly,” remarked a couple of visiting runners.

However, Climax purportedly got it name from being the highest point on the railroad between Savannah and the Chattahoochee River. If you start at a height, the only place to go is down, as Swine Time 5K runners notice on their outbound trek on Salem Church Road. When you turn around to return, it’s time to climb back up to the highest point on the railroad.

In spite of the hills, runners have been coming to Climax for decades, attempting to win bottles of cane syrup. The syrup shows no sign of giving out, and neither does the race.

Kelly wins as Miller sets record at Valdosta's Turkey Day 5K

Wild TurkeysIt's an athletic tradition that prior to the feasts of our national day of gluttony, Thanksgiving Day, everyone goes out and runs a race. After all, there is no better way to prepare for the consumption of several thousand calories than by burning a few hundred. Some of these events take place days before the fourth Thursday of November, but others take place that morning--such as the Valdosta, Georgia, Thanksgiving Day 5K.

Valdosta's sixth annual Thanksgiving Day Road Race got going early on a cool Thursday morning, 27 November 2014. After finishing second to Brandon Hough in the 2013 run, Ryan Kelly of Lake Park, Georgia, was back for another try. Paring 40 seconds off his previous year's performance, Kelly ran 17:14 to win the 2014 race. Seconds later David Jones was across the finish line in 17:23, taking second. Just five days earlier, Jones had finished his sophomore year cross-country season, racing for Valdosta State in the NCAA Division II South Regional in Huntsville, Alabama. Jaden Long of West Point, New York, was third in 18:26.

Just a few meters behind Long and repeating as the fourth-place finisher was the first woman finisher, Erin Miller. Miller, from Columbia, South Carolina, not only won the women's title for the second year straight, but she also clobbered the women's course record that she had set in 2013, running 18:28. It may very well be the fastest 5K ever run by a woman in the streets of Valdosta, eclipsing even the 18:32 that Melissa Daugherty posted at the St. John School 5K in 2005. Neither race is run on a certified course, though, so bickering over course length can now begin.

Valdosta's Rick Mazurkiewicz was the fastest master in the race, placing ninth overall in 19:53. Melanie Ellis of Valdosta was the first woman master and women's runner-up, finishing 19th overall in 22:20. 103 athletes finished the 3.1-mile race.

Lake and Rosen back on top at Turkey Trot

Chris LakeLast year, Chris Lake’s five-year winning streak at the Tallahassee Turkey Trot 15K ended with a third-place finish. On Thursday morning, 27 November 2014, he was a Turkey Trot champion once again, winning the 9.3-mile race through Southwood in 49:37.

“I was trying to beat my time from two years ago,” said Lake.

He did. It was Lake’s fastest time yet at the Turkey Trot, and the fastest winning time in the race since 1995 when Jessie Close ran 49:12. Lake ran most of the race alone, leading nearly wire-to-wire and finishing almost half a mile ahead of the next runner. Stephen Cox placed second in 52:11 with Roger Schmidt taking third in 52:38 and Nate Kaiser fourth in 53:32. Seattle, Washington, distance runner Chris Fendrich was the fastest master runner in the race, placing fifth overall in 54:33.

Sheryl Rosen“The women’s competition was excellent this year,” said Tallahassee lawyer Sheryl Rosen. “Seeley, Allison, Adriana, and Lauren were all up there.”

Excelling most was Rosen, who won her third straight Turkey Trot 15K women’s title, and her sixth since 2006. She didn’t come into the race with a lot of confidence, though.

“I’ve been injured and I haven’t raced for a year,” explained Rosen. “My leg still isn’t 100%. I started off conservative, about 6:45 per mile. Then I slowly inched my way up.”

Adriana PiekarewiczHalfway through the race, Adriana Piekarewicz had just overtaken Mary Masterton to take the lead in the women’s field. Farther back, Lauren Poulos and Seeley Lovett chased the leaders followed by Sheryl Rosen and Allison Eagen. Over the final miles, Poulos moved up into the lead. Rosen was moving as well.

“I got up to Lauren Poulos at eight miles,” said Rosen. After that, “We traded the lead for about a mile. We were neck and neck down the hill.”

That was the final downhill on Merchants Row Boulevard toward the finish line on Esplanade Way. On that slope, Rosen broke away to take the lead for the final time, going on to win in 60:19. Poulos was the women's runner-up in 60:52. Adriana Piekarewicz was third in the women's standings at 61:03, while 2010 women's winner Allison Eagen followed in fourth at 62:33. Early leader Mary Masterton was the fifth woman finisher, running 62:41. Stephanie Liles-Weyant of Tallahassee was the top woman master, running 66:36.

Molosky still owns the Draggin' Tail Challenge

If there was a "Dragon Master" at the 20th annual Draggin' Tail 18-Mile Challenge, it would have to be Vince Molosky. Running 1:55:23, the Tallahassee distance runner won the race for the sixth year in a row on Saturday morning, 22 November 2014. By now Molosky has quite a collection of the dragon-effigy awards that go to the winners of the event. Other athletes have won the race, but that was so long ago that it's getting hard to remember them. The most recent champion before Molosky began his one-man dragon dynasty was Tallahassee master runner Jack McDermott. McDermott took the Draggin' Tail Challenge titles in 2005, 2006, and 2008, but in 2014 he ran 2:04:22 and finished second to Molosky.

Tallahassee realtor Nancy Stedman was the first woman as well as the first woman master in the 18-mile race, placing 14th overall in 2:35.39. Master runner Karen Meadows was second in the women's standings, finishing 18th overall in 2:41:51. Birgit Maier-Katkin edged Theresa Sullivan for the third women's spot, 2:53:04 to 2:53:05; the two runners were 23rd and 24th overall.

43 athletes finished the 18-mile out-and-back course through Sunny Hills, Florida, confronting bad pavement, lonely roads, and "sand mountain." Twelve relay teams also covered the course, and another 21 athletes completed the Draggin' Tail 5K fun run.

State Championship Titles of Tallahassee & Leon County High School Cross-Country Teams, 1947-2014

High school cross country isn't that old as an organized sport in Florida. The first FHSAA state championship in cross country wasn't held until 1947. In 1969, over two decades later, a Tallahassee school first brought home a state cross country title. Since then Leon County boys (and starting in the 1970s, girls) have won numerous team and individual titles at the state cross country meet. The 2014 championships were held right in Tallahassee at Leon County's Apalachee Regional Park, home to the FHSAA state cross country final since 2012. Capital City athletes didn't leave empty handed.

Sukhi Khosla
In the final event of a morning of championship races, Leon senior Sukhi Khosla won the class 3A boys race in 15:01.8, the fastest time of the day on the 5K course at ARPXC. It was Khosla's second state cross country win and the ninth for Leon--putting the school in the FHSAA record book for the most individual championships. Repeating is no small feat--since the state meet was established in 1947, only 29 boys have tallied two wins. An even more elite group of five boys won three times. Three of the double winners have come from Tallahassee--Ray Carter (1988, 1989) of Leon, Patrick Swain (2008, 2009) of Maclay, and now Sukhi Khosla (2013, 2014) of Leon. The Capital City also produced one of the triple winners--Matt Mizereck (2007, 2008, 2009) of Leon.

The same race put a Tallahassee team into the record books, as the Chiles Timberwolves took the class 3A boys' team title--the school's fourth. seniors Avery Bartlett (3rd, 15:31.8), Allan Hernandez (7th, 15:39.1), Tyson Murray (8th, 15:43.4), and Jared Grigas (24th, 16:05.8) combined with with junior Austin Dodson (27th, 16:08.2) to put up a winning score of 64 points for the Timberwolves, with back-up by seniors Thomas Blaine (32nd, 16:15.5) and Austin Runtschke (78th, 16:56.2).

2014 Chiles High boys' cross country team
Tallahassee dominance in the 3A boys race continued as the Leon boys, led by Khosla, placed second in the team standings with 77 points. In addition to Khosla, seniors Scott Hunter (4th, 15:33.6), Kyle Buchholz (21st, 16:01.9), and Wil Luca (22nd, 16:04.0), together with sophomore Matt Cashin (39th, 16:22.9) scored for the Lions. Senior Maxx Marshall (41st, 16:23.1) and junior Adam Wallenfelsz (92nd, 17:11.3) also competed for Leon.

Leon County was also represented in the class 3A girls race, as Chiles scored 147 points to place fifth. Chiles junior Emma Tucker put together the right race at the right time, running 18:44.2 to place third in the state final. Junior Alex Wallace (12th, 19:03.4), frosh Ana Wallace (31st, 19:35.5), junior Juliana Krueger (44th, 19:56.0), frosh Erin Phelps (90th, 20:50.3), sophomore Jianni McDole (116th, 21:31.5), and frosh Cynthia Patterson (154th, 22:59.9) also contributed to the Chiles cause.

Tallahassee Maclay was fourth in the class 1A girls team standings, scoring 158 points. Sophomore Caroline Willis broke into the top ten for the Marauders, placing ninth in 19:20.9. Sophomore Molly McCann (30th, 20:06.9), sixth-grader Lindsay James (41st, 20:25), eight-grader Kenzie Mazziotta (44th, 20:39.0), frosh Jainey Coates (52nd, 20:58.9), frosh Ann Elise Desotell (53rd, 21:00.5), and junior Katie Whitworth filled out the rest of Maclay's squad in the championship race.

Emma TuckerMaclay was also represented in the class 1A boys race, where the Marauders scored 208 points to take fifth. Junior George Gwynn (25th, 17:05.1), sophomore Jake Mazziotta (29th, 17:11.1), frosh James McClure (42nd, 17:36.7), junior Daniel Becker (80th, 18:18.9), frosh Daniel Sweeney (103rd, 18:44.8), junior George Escobar (133rd, 19:23.0), and eighth-grader Clay Milford (145th, 19:37.6) competed for Maclay.

Some of Tallahassee's neighbors also made it to the State Finals. The Blountstown Tigers and the Aucilla Christian Warriors both raced in class 1A boys competition. Blountstown was scored 505 points to place 22nd with senior Thomas Howell (77th, 18:17.4), sophomore Tyreek Sumner (98th, 18:41.2), frosh Jesse Boyd (110th, 18:50.2), sophomore Alfredo Puente (160th, 20:05.9), frosh Weston Schrock (161st, 20:06.8), frosh Will Price (162nd, 20:08.4), and sophomore Mark Wilson (170th, 20:26.4). It was the third year in a row at the State Championships for the Tigers. For Aucilla Christian, it was their second straight trip to the State Meet. This time, the Warriors placed 24th with 555 points earned by the running of sophomore Gatlin Nennstiel (45th, 17:39.0), senior Carson Nennstiel (142nd, 19:35.6), sophomore Nick Arceneaux (149th, 19:44.9), sophomore Traynor Barker (158th, 20:03), seventh-grader Dawson Bishop (159th, 20:04.8), sophomore Chaz Hamilton (169th, 20:25.9), and junior Taylor Nugent (180th, 21:26.8).

Caleb Wiedeman and Alan PearsonThe Aucilla Christian girls made it to State for the fifth year in a row in class 1A, placing 25th and scoring 723 points. Racing for the Warriors were frosh Camryn Grant (124th, 22:54.5), sixth-grader Olivia Walton (152nd, 23:52.2), sixth-grader Anna Leigh Trest (157th, 24:06.5), junior Sarah Tharpe (167th, 24:55.6), seventh-grader Abby Reams (168th, 25:00.4), eighth-grader Grace Beshears (175th, 25:57.9), and eighth-grader Hanna Searcy (177th, 26:14.8).

In class 2A, Wakulla made a return appearance in both the boys race and the girls race. Haleigh Martin (16th, 19:40.5), Constance Lewis (109th, 21:56.0), Juliana Prestia (114th, 22:04.9), Lydia Wiedeman (130th, 22:18.2), Emily Lawrence (166th, 23:52.3), Alyssa McIver (174th, 25:19.9), and Jeanna Prisco (175th, 25:58.0) scored 474 points for the War Eagles in the class 2A girls race, placing 20th. The Wakulla boys placed 22nd in the class 2A race on the strength of 514 points scored by the team of sophomore Bryce Cole (72nd, 17:26.4), senior Lane Williams (104th, 17:53.5), sophomore James Story (142nd, 18:30.9), frosh Dylan Peebles (144th, 18:31.4), senior Travis Parks (155th, 18:38.5), frosh Caleb Wiedeman (157th, 18:39.8), and senior Alan Pearson (163rd, 18:51.0).

Because of the winning performances of the Chiles boys and Leon's Sukhi Khosla, I have to update the list of titles won by local teams. Thank you, guys; thank you too much. And congratulations.

Victory at VetFest for Greenstein and Sherron

Gary Galvez"That was a tough course," Adam Greenstein said after Tallahassee's fourth annual VetFest 5K. "Especially the hill on Monroe Street."

His view was shared by many of the runners in the 11 November 2014 race, but Greenstein weathered the hills of downtown Tallahassee better than any other athlete, posting a winning time of 17:44.

The 3.1-mile event started on Park Avenue just west of Gadsden Street at 8:30 AM on Tuesday morning. Once given the command to "Go!", he field plunged downhill, heading east to Franklin Boulevard. Gary Galvez of Capital City Runners led the race south on Franklin toward Cascades Park. Greenstein was several steps behind in second. For him, it wasn't a typical position.

"I usually go out fast and then crash," explained Greenstein. "So this time I tried to run controlled on the first mile."

Adam GreensteinBefore that first mile was over, Greenstein had caught up with Galvez in Cascades Park. After leaving the park, Greenstein took control of the race.

"On the hill up Lafayette Street I started to pull away," he said.

Before Greenstein was done pulling away, he had a lead of well over 300 meters. He crossed the finish line on Gadsden Street near College Avenue first in 17:44. His race plan had worked.

"I think I ran an even pace," said Greenstein. "I usually lead the first mile but not the last mile. This time I tried to do it the other way around."

Galvez hung on to finish second in 18:58.

Katie Sherron
Third place overall went to the first woman in the race, Katie Sherron. Only eleven days into November, it was already Sherron's third women's win of the month. Her earlier victories had come in two cross-country races at Apalachee Regional Park, including the Trash Dash 5K only three days before VetFest. At the Veterans Day event Sherron had to contend with the VetFest 5K defending women's champion, Renee Cox. Cox set the pace early for the ladies, but Sherron was never far behind. Halfway through the race she attacked.

"At about a mile and a half there was a little downhill," recalled Sherron. "I like to make a move on the downhill."

Renee CoxSherron broke away, going on to win by nearly 200 meters with a 19:05. Cox was the women's runner up, placing sixth overall in 19:51. Shannon Colavecchio was third in the women's standings, coming in 13th overall in 21:03. Swift Creek Middle School cross-country runners Alyson Churchill and Megan Churchill were the next two finishers in the women's division, 14th in 21:06 and 18th in 21:31.

Mark McCaslin was the fastest master runner in the race, finishing eighth overall in 20:23. Paula O'Neill was the first woman master, 20th overall in 21:57.

For quite some time, the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day was the only holiday race in Tallahassee. In 2013 Capital City Kiwanis brought the Firecracker 5K to the city's Independence Day schedule, and the VetFest 5K has been part of Tallahassee's Veterans Day since 2011. The race is alive and well--191 athletes finished this year's VetFest 5K, the most in the four-year history of the race. Expect to see it on the streets of Tallahassee again on 11 November 2015.
