In autumn we run the trails because it's cross country season. In winter we run the trails to be sheltered from the cold wind. In spring we run the trails to be out in the great weather among the new plant growth. In summer we run the trails to get away from the hot pavement. Most of the time, though, we don't need a seasonal excuse--we run the trails because it's fun. And on Saturday morning, 13 June 2015, whatever their reasons, 51 athletes raced the trails in Albany, Georgia, in the second annual flint River Ramble Four Mile.Darton State College professor Patrick Whitehead, a Good Life City runner, won the race in 26:47, the fastest time yet in the Ramble. Another Good Life City runner, Arnoldo DeJesus, finished runner-up for the second year in a row, this time in 28:23. Right behind DeJesus, Columbus State cougar cross country runner Tyler Sheffel was third in 28:32. Leesburg, Georgia, athlete Dennis Moore was the fastest master runner in the Ramble, coming in fourth overall in 30:15.
Janie Plowden, a rising junior on the Westover High cross-country team, was the first female finisher in the race, Rambling the four miles in 35:38 and placing 13th overall. Another Plowden, MaryAnn Plowden, was the second female finisher and first woman master, placing 20th overall in 39:19.
All proceeds from the Flint River Ramble Four Mile will benefit Hope For The Warriors, a national organization providing support programs for service members, veterans of all branches, and family members of the fallen.
