Kelly and Lancaster win at Winnersville

For a few decades now, Valdostans have given their South Georgia town the nickname "Winnersville." Decide yourself whether this is the product of confidence, arrogance, or a small typographical error, but the name is there. You can find it attached to the Winnersville Awards trophy store, the Winnersville Classic high school football game, and CrossFit Winnersville. And on Saturday morning, 24 October 2015, the name showed up again in the title of the Winnersville 5K Road Race.


The 3.1-mile course started and finished at the Valdosta State University Recreation Center. Running 18:24, Valdosta High cross country coach Ryan Kelly was the winner of the race, finishing a comfortable 120 meters ahead of the next runner. Brian Rohrbach of Valdosta was the runner up in 18:53. 14-year-old Lake Park athlete Casey Weldon was third overall in 22:02.4.


Valdosta Middle School eighth-grader and cross country runner Katie Lancaster won the women's title, placing seventh overall in 22:40. Debbie Allen of Valdosta was the top master runner, finishing second in the women's standings and ninth overall in 23:04. Valdosta master runner Melanie Ellis was the third female finisher, tenth overall in 23:13.


Louis Audain of Valdosta was the first male master runner in the race, coming in thirteenth overall in 25:12.


114 athletes finished the inaugural Winnersville 5K, with another 25 completing a one-mile fun run. Proceed of the event will benefit the Valdosta City Schools Foundation and the Lowndes Education Improvement Foundation. Timing and finish line services were provided by A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia.
