Seminoles and Trojans triumph at the Panther Cross Country Invitational

PanthersAthletes from nine different high schools gathered in the Southwood section of Tallahassee, Florida on Friday afternoon, 9 September 2016, for John Paul II Catholic High's first ever Panther Cross Country Invitational.


Cross country competition opened with the girls' 5K. Sophomore Gianna Forte of Jacksonville, Florida's Bishop Snyder High School won the 3.1-mile race with a 200-meter lead, running 21:52. The Bishop Snyder Cardinals had traveled more than 150 miles to come to the meet, but it was the girls who came across the street from the Florida State University School who took the team title. Led by the 22:47 runner-up performance of sophomore Summer Williams, Florida State won the team competition with 41 points. Opening the scoring for the home team, John Paul II senior Julia Rose Travis placed fourth in 23:39. Behind Travis, the John Paul II Panthers totaled 54 points, equaling Bishop Snyder's score of 54. John Paul II took second on the tie breaker, while the Cardinals were third in the five-team field.

Finishing almost 150 meters ahead of the next runner, Aucilla Christian senior Gatlin Nennstiel won the boys' 5K in 18:18. North Florida Christian frosh David Keen took second in 18:51, and Community Christian sophomore Andrew Wynn was third in 19:52.


It was the boys from Lincoln High who took the team title, though. Led by top five finishes by sophomore Yunus Kovankaya (4th, 19:53) and junior Franz Roeder (5th, 20:33), the Trojans from Lincoln piled up 38 points to place first in the boys' team standings. Aucilla Christian was second with 44 points. Led by John Paul II junior Seth Kemeny (6th, 20:37), the host Panthers placed third with 56 points.


Of the schools represented at the Panther Invitational, Aucilla Christian, Community Christian, Godby, Jefferson County, Lincoln, and North Florida Christian are scheduled to clash again on Saturday morning, 17 September 2016, at the seventeenth annual Bainbridge High School Bearcat Invitational in Bainbridge, Georgia.
