Bolles and Belen Jesuit get wins at a lake-free Alligator Lake

2017 Alligator Lake Cross-Country InvitationalThe ninth annual Alligator Lake Cross-Country Invitational wasn't held at Alligator Lake. After Hurricane Irma passed by Lake City, Florida on Monday morning, 11 September 2017, there was so much water in the lake that it had wandered out of its bed to see what was going on.

"Alligator Lake Park and its trails are still under about 3' of water," reported Dusty Smith of B3R Promotions, the meet hosts.

Rather than cancel the meet or transform it into a swimming event, B3R Promotions moved it to a higher and drier venue, The Oaks Equestrian Center in Lake City. No one seemed to have trouble finding the new location, because 135 teams and 1379 athletes made their way to the Equestrian Center on Saturday morning, 30 September 2017, to run one one of the nine races at the Alligator Lake Invitational.

Competition got started at 7:20 AM with the invitational section of the high school girls' 5K. Creekside's Claire Openshaw had raced Alligator Lake in 2016, when she finished a close second to Grace Blair of Oak Hall. Both Openshaw and Blair were back for the 2017 Alligator Lake, but this time it was all Openshaw. The Creekside sophomore won the race in 18:52, finishing 60 meters ahead of the runner-up, McIntosh sophomore Megan Uszynski. Blair was another twenty meters back, third in 19:11.

Chiles had two runners in the top ten--senior Ana Wallace (5th, 19:36) and junior Emily Culley (8th, 20:07)--but so did Bolles--seventh-grader Ella Mickler (7th, 20:03) and senior Rachel Shapiro (9th, 20:08). Bolles followed up with scoring performances by junior Maeve O'Riordan (11th, 20:13), frosh Layne Rivera (24th, 20:31), and sophomore Helena Kummings (27th, 20:40). That gave Bolles 78 points and first place in the 24-team field. Chiles was an extremely close second with 81 points. McIntosh edged Creekside for third, 97 to 101.

Unlike Openshaw and Blair, Belen Jesuit senior Joshua Collins hadn't raced Alligator Lake in 2016. Neverthless, Collins was at the meet in 2017, and won the invitational section of the high school boys' 5K in 16:13. Zach Jaeger, a McIntosh junior, took second in 16:35. Jacksonville Stanton senior Sam Skiles was third in 16:43.

Collins was the only Belen athlete in the top ten, but just outside the top ten the Wolverines had solid performances from eighth-grader Adam Magoulas (13th, 17:17), sophomore Matthew Bryan (14th, 17:20), and juniors Cesar Aguzzi (15th, 17:20) and Lucas De La Hoz (17th, 17:21). That solid pack of four runners plus Collins gave Belen 56 points and the Alligator Lake high school boys' team title. Chiles was second with 115 points, led by senior Michael Phillips (7th, 16:57), the defending state champion in class 3A. McIntosh was third among the 22 teams in the race with 132 points.

Ashley and Lleva take home wins from the Dolphin Dash

It has been a cross-country season of battles between Arnold frosh Marisa Ashley and Mosley senior Ella Swigler. At Majette Park on Saturday morning, 30 September 2017, it was Ashley over Swigler with a winning 20:33 in the girls' 5K at Mosley High's ninth annual Dolphin Dash. Choctawhatchee senior Noah Lleva won the boys' 5K, edging Arnold junior Mason Bennett 18:03 to 18:06. Port Saint Joe took the girls' team title with 47 points, and Choctawhatchee was the top boys' team, scoring 33 points.

Until recently Majette Park had been the Bay Dunes Golf Course. Before that it had been a landfill. It must have had even earlier history, perhaps in farming, timber, or hunting. But in 2017 the land achieved its highest destiny, becoming a cross-country course. Earlier meets had started at Harders Park and played around the edges of the old golf course, but the Dolphin Dash was the first meet to make full use of Majette--perhaps the first of many.

History probably wasn't on the minds of the athletes who lined up at 8:00 AM for the start of the first race of the 2017 Dolphin Dash, the girls' 5K. Marisa Ashley ran away from the field, crossing the finish line with a 120-meter lead in 20:33 and picking up her second win of the season. Ella Swigler took second in 21:04, and Marianna junior Lauren Locke placed third in 22:17.

It was Port Saint Joe that prevailed in the team competition, though. The Sharks started their attack with two runner in the top ten, senior Shamaria Cole (8th, 23:57) and eighth-grader Emily Lacour (9th, 23:58). Frosh Autumn Kotelman (11th, 24:34), seventh-grader Lexis Fountain (18th, 25:44), and frosh Savannah Burkett (22nd, 26:40) completed the scoring for Port Saint Joe, giving the Lady Sharks 47 points and first place out of seven teams. Florida State University School, led by junior Summer Williams (6th, 23:39), was a close second with 54 points. Choctawhatchee was third with 80 points; their top runner was sophomore Erin DeCocker, twelth in 24:45.

Unlike the girls' race, there were no 120-meter victories in the boys' 5K. Three runners approached the finish line within a few strides of each other--Choctawhatchee senior Noah Lleva, Arnold junior Mason Bennett, and Blountstown senior Weston Schrock, each looking for the first win of the season. Lleva got it, placing first in 18:03. Bennett was runner-up, a few steps back in 18:06 and just ahead of the 18:09 posted by third-place finisher Schrock.

Lleva was just one of four athletes that Choctawhatchee placed in the top ten. The Indians also had sophomore Jacob Knox fourth in 18:26, junior David Santarosa seventh in 18:43, and sophomore Pablo Duque eighth in 18:45. Choctawhatchee frosh Frankie Paone was fifth runner for the Indians, placing thirteenth in 19:33, and completing his team's winning total of 33 points. Blountstown was second in the twelve-team field with 61 points. Led by the tenth place, 19:03 performance of sophomore Zack McFarland, Port Saint Joe took third with 93 points.

The Dolphin Dash was the fourth Bay County cross-country meet of the 2017 season, coming after the Buccaneer Bash, the Bay Invitational, and the Ram Run. The Bay County Championship on Saturday, 14 October 2017, is the only meet remaining before the State Championship series opens with the District Championship Meet.

Paige Churchill and Ben Kirbo were head of the herd at the Mustang Stampede

If you're old enough, you might remember the 1960s when there were junior high schools in Leon County. If you're not quite that old, you might remember the 1970s when the junior highs became middle schools, and those middle school didn't have interscholastic sports. If you're not even that old, you might remember the 1980s, when cross-country as an interscholastic sport came to the Leon County middle schools.

Leon County middle schools are still part of the landscape in Tallahassee, Florida and so is middle school cross-country. The sport has a short season, though, with only five meets including the Leon Country Schools Championship. The last meet before the championship, the fourth of the season, was the Mustang Stampede at Montford Middle School on Thursday evening, 28 September 2017. Swift Creek seventh-grader Paige Churchill won the girls' two-mile race in 13:12, leading her team to a first-place score of 20 points. Montford eighth-grader Ben Kirbo won the boys' two mile in 11:15, while the Deerlake boys scored 42 points to take the team title.

The girls' two mile opened the meet, starting just after 6:00 PM. Several different athletes optimistically tried leading early, but by half a mile into the race Paige Churchill. the defending champion, was setting the pace for the field. The runners plunged into a pine forest. When they emerged half a mile later, Churchill had broken the race open. 30 meters behind her, Swift Creek eighth-grader Elise Ferguson and Deerlake seventh-grader Maya Tang were fighting for second. Churchill widened the gap during the rest of the run, racing home in a winning 13:12. Ferguson took second in 13:31 and Tang third in 13:38.

Swift Creek put three more girls in the top ten--sixth-grader Ava Jones was fourth in 13:50, seventh-grader Stella Lewis was fifth in 13:54, and seventh-grader Alima Hemenway was eighth in 14:03. Together with Churchill and Ferguson, that gave Swift Creek 20 points, mathematically unbeatable in the low-sccore-wins world of cross-country. Deerlake was second in the eight-team field with 32 points, and Montford was third with 84 points.

It wasn't the home course for Churchill, but as the 2016 Stampede winner, she was familiar with the course. She also had her three sisters at the meet to cheer her on.

Maya Tang

"It's really cool! I'm glad that they can come out to be at the races," said Churchill. "I like the shade on course even though there are a few hills."

Early in the second half of the boys' two mile, Deerlake runners Filippo Reina and Wyatt Townsend were sharing the lead. Less than twenty meters back, though, they were being stalked by Ben Kirbo and Fairview sixth-grader Patrick Koon. Kirbo and Koon ran the leaders down, then Kirbo kept going, winning the race in 11:15. Koon took second in 11:24. Reina edged Swift Creek seventh-grader Connor Edwards for third, 11:33 to 11:34.

After Reina, Deerlake got scoring performances from Townsend (6th, 11:47) and eighth-graders William Wilkerson (7th, 11:53), Matt Reynolds (10th, 12:01), and Grant Gallagaer (16th, 12:21), giving Deerlake 42 points and the team title. Led by Edwards, Swift Creek was second with 52 points. Kirbo's Montford team scored 86 to take third.

As a Montford student, Kirbo goes to class next the Mustang Stampede course every day. "That definitely helped," he said. "But it wasn't like we run it every day. Because of the hurricane there were a lot of trees down and we couldn't train out there till a day or two ago.

"I love this course."

Following the Mustang Stampede, Leon County Schools middle school cross-country season concludes on Wednesday evening, 4 October 2017, with the championship meet at Apalachee Regional Park. Churchill will be going for her second straight county title. Kirbo will be trying for his first.

"I'm probably going to be nervous for the next one," said Churchill. "I only have one more practice with the team. That's going to be sad."

Ella Porcher, Leo Kelly, and Holy Comforter star at the Crusader Classic

Tallahassee, Florida's Holy Comforter Episcopal School has a habit of sweeping the team titles at its cross-country home opener, the Crusader Classic, held each year on Lawson's Course behind the school. In fact, Holy Comforter teams have won both the girls' 3K and the boys' 3K at the Classic each year since 2014. They made it four in a row on Tuesday, 26 September 2017, when the Holy Comforter girls' scored 33 points for another Crusader Classic win, while the Holy Comforter boys picked up their own win with 31 points. Ella Porcher, a Maclay seventh-grader, won the middle school girls' 3K in 12:16. Holy Comforter eighth-grader Leo Kelly went 11:03 to win the middle school boys' 3K.

After an elementary school mile, middle school competition got under way with the girls' 3K. When the dust had settled from the chaos of the start of the race, Maclay seventh-graders Ella Porcher and Sofia Paredes were in the lead. They were there to stay. 600 meters into the race the pair were already more than 100 meters ahead of the field. That margin only grew wider as the race progressed. The two ran together until the final straightaway, when Porcher outsprinted Paredes to the finish line, 12:16 to 12:20. It was only the first race of the week for Porcher and Paredes, who will be back in competition on Saturday at the Alligator Lake Invitational.

"That's Lake City," said Porcher. "It's a [high school] varsity girls race, a 5K"

"I kind of like 5K better," said Paredes. "You've got time to pace yourself and move up."

Holy Comforter sixth-grader Mary Clayton Soto took third in 13:04. Maclay eighth-grader Madeline Lillie edged Holy Comforter eighth-grader Kate Smith for fourth, 13:27 to 13:28, but Holy Comforter's remaining three scorers all finished in the top ten, ahead of Maclay's fourth runner. Eighth-grader Sophia Umana (7th, 13:53), seventh-grader Camille Resavage (8th, 13:53), and eighth-grader Imani Walker (10th, 14:28) completed the Crusader total of 33 points, giving Holy Comforter first place out of seven teams. It was the sixth straight year that the Holy Comforter girls had won the Crusader Classic. Maclay was second with 101 points. Trinity Catholic took third with 101 points, led by seventh-grader Lily Moore, who placed sixth in 13:32.

The meet concluded with the boys' 3K. Holy Comforter's Leo Kelly grabbed the lead soon after the start of the race, then spent the remainder of the three-kilometer run pulling steadily away from the field. Kelly was nearly 250 meters ahead of the next runner when he crossed the finish line in a winning time of 11:03.

Leo Kelly

"I wanted to break 11:00," said Kelly. "Maybe next time."

"It was a little windy and the course was tough," added Kelly. "Even though we train out here every day the hills still get you."

Behind Kelly, Holy Comforter eighth-grader Jackson Yarbrough held the second position for much of the race, but during the second half he was overtaken by Maclay seventh-grader Robert Jordan Hosay and Community Leadership fifth-grader Noah Deem. Hosay and Deem had a back-and-forth battle, but on the final straight Hosay had the better kick and took second in 12:13. Deem was third in 12:15. Yarbrough held off Trinity Catholic seventh-grader William Stephenson for fourth, 12:33 to 12:35.

Holy Comforter picked up two more top ten finishes from sixth-graders Matthew Wilbourn (7th, 13:01) and Will Winsor (8th, 13:02). Holy Comforter's fifth scorer, sixth-grader Donald Jackson (11th, 13:12), gave the Crusaders 31 points and the win. Maclay was second in the five-team field with 52 points, and Trinity Catholic placed third with 77.

Holy Comforter also hosts the Tallahassee Middle School Open on Thursday afternoon, 12 October 2017. Before and after that, though, there is plenty of cross-country for the Crusaders.

"Saturday we go to Alligator Lake," said Leo Kelly. "My goal this season is to get top fifteen at State. And then keep working toward track season."

There's always another race. There's always another season.
