Henneberger and Mills post record runs at the Tiger Classic

Each cross-country season, Dothan, Alabama's Dothan High hosts the Tiger Classic. Just as consistently, each year since 2014, Enterprise High comes to the meet and sweeps the team titles. On Thursday evening, 9 September 2017, that tradition continued. Dothan High hosted the meet at Eastgate Park. The Enterprise High girls scored 23 points to place first as a team in their race, while the Enterprise High boys tallied a perfect 15 points to win the boys' 5K. Northview High senior Makennah Mills broke the Enterprise monopoly on victory by winning the individual title in the high school girls' 5K with a 20:35. Enterprise continued to own the high school boys' 5K, with junior Gabriel Henneberger taking that race in 16:35.

High school competition at the 2017 Tiger Classic opened with the girls' 5K. Laura Patterson was on the starting line. An Enterprise junior, Patterson had won the race in 2016. The 2015 champ, Enterprise junior Jill Fassl, was also in the race. Makennah Mills hadn't been at the Tiger Classic either of those years, or anywhere else in Alabama. Mills had been in Arizona, racing for Prescott High. Now, though, she was in Dothan, Alabama wearing Northview High colors. And by the end of the high school girls' 5K, everyone in Eastgate Park knew that Makennah Mills was in Alabama.

Mills won the race by more than 200 meters, running 20:35--the best girls' time ever posted at the Tiger Classic. It was her first win wearing a Northview uniform. Enterprise High frosh runners Kayleigh Riordan and Natalie Warner took the next two places, running 21:29 and 21:43.

Enterprise put three more runners in the top ten, with Laura Patterson fourth in 21:48, Jill Fassl sixth in 22:01, and frosh Mirna Thompson tenth in 23:05. Once Thompson had finished, Enterprise had a mathematically unbeatable 23 points and their team's fourth-straight Tiger Classic girl's title. Northview was second in the nine-team field with 74 points. Led by frosh Kate Smith (13th, 23:43), host school Dothan edged Houston Academy for third place, 116 to 118.
