Funderburk blazes a valedictory 17:44.50 at the Yellow Jacket Invitational

Yellow JacketAmong humans, where a lifetime is traditionally regarded as threescore-and-ten years, twenty-five years is about a generation. In high school sports, though, history moves a little faster. You may compete before and after high school, but your high school athletic career is no more than four years. A team photo taken four years ago includes no faces on today's team. In twenty-five years, that four-year changeover happens six times. In high school sports, twenty-five years is a very, very long time. No athlete is going to remember that far back. Few of the coaches will.

Not much lasts twenty-five years in high school sports. But Thomas County Central High School's Yellow Jacket Cross-Country Invitational has. Maybe no one can tell you who won the first Yellow Jacket Invitational in 1993, but it's nevertheless certain that the 25th annual Invitational was run in Thomasville, Georgia at Thomas County Middle School on Saturday morning, 14 October 2017. And among the athletes on hand to celebrate the twenty-fifth year of the Yellow Jacket Invitational, Colquitt County senior Elizabeth Funderburk ran a stunning 17:45 to win the high school girls' 5K, and Lowndes senior Brishen House won the high school boys' 5K in 17:04.

It was the third trip to the Yellow Jacket Invitational for Funderburk. As a sophomore, the Colquitt County Packer had won the girls' 5K at the 2015 Invitational in a respectable 20:07. In 2016 Funderburk returned to tear up the course in a winning 17:50. In 2017 she ran even faster, going 17:45. Veterans High sophomore Mackenzie Walls, a fourth-place finisher in the 2016 race, took second behind Funderburk, running 19:46. Kaylee Valenzia, a Lowndes senior, was third in 20:54.

It was the girls from Valwood School who took the team title, though. Led by the 21:27 of of sixth-place finisher Riley O'Linn, Valwood edged Veterans for the top spot in the high school girls' team standings, 80 to 82. Lee County was third in the eleven-team field with 98 points, led by junior Caroline Taylor (15th, 23:30).

Unlike Funderburk, Brishen House didn't have any history at the Yellow Jacket Invitational. Neverthless, the Lowndes senior made some history in the 2017 high school boys' 5K, winning the race by 140 meters in 17:04. Valdosta senior Noah Richards took second in 17:34, and Lowndes frosh Alec Munger was third in 17:48.

Then came the Veterans High wave. Veterans Warhawks took the next four places, with junior Aamiri Ducksworth fourth in 18:02, senior Robbie Griffith fifth in 18:12, senior Brett Horton sixth in 18:23, and junior Griffin Hodges seventh in 18:25. The Warhawks got a fifth top-ten finish from junior Andrew Bos (10th, 18:38), giving the boys from Kathleen, Georgia a winning 32 points and their second straight Yellow Jacket Invitational team title. Lowndes was second with 64 points, and Valdosta third out of twelve teams with 72.

MacIntyre Park sixth-grader Anika Imhoff won the middle school girls' two mile at the Yellow Jacket Invitational with a 17:35. However, MacIntryre Park didn't have a full team so when Thomas County took the next four places plus seventh place with Makaina Griffin (2nd, 17:42), Gracie McNichols (3rd, 17:47), Samantha Jennings (4th, 17:49), Elizabeth Rinehart (5th, 18:45), and MiKayla Voyles (7th, 19:22). Those five runners gave their team the win with a perfect score of 15. Whigam, led by fifth-grader Sada Bostick (14th, 21:08), was second with 50 points.

Wallace and Newland lead the Chiles charge at the Red Hills Cross-Country Invitational

By Saturday, 14 October 2017, district cross-country meets were less than two weeks away for the high school cross-country teams of Tallahassee, Florida. There was time enough, though, for one more round of regular-season racing--the inaugural Red Hills Cross-Country Invitational at Tallahassee's Phipps Park. The meet was not only hosted by Chiles High, it seemed all about Chiles High. Chiles senior Ana Wallace won the girls' 5K in 19:01, Chiles senior Matthew Newland won the boys' 5K in 16:18, the Chiles girls took the team title in their race with 17 points, and the Chiles boys were also victorious with an even lower 16-point score.

Ana Wallace
Ana Wallace

The girls raced at 8:00 AM. Just seven days earlier at the Great American Cross-Country Invitational in Cary, North Carolina, Ana Wallace had run 17:26.5--more than half a minute faster than any time posted by any other Florida girl up to that point in the 2017 high school cross-country season. What do you do a week after a performance like that?

If you're Ana Wallace, you keep winning. Easily outdistancing the field, Wallace cruised the 5,000 meters around Phipps Park in a winning 19:01. Chiles junior Emily Culley was second in 19:19, Chiles sophomore Caitlin Wilkey took third in 19:29, and Chiles senior Erin Phelps placed fourth in 19:52. Only two Leon runners, sophomore Liz Calabro (5th, 20:20) and junior Kat Resavage (6th, 20:54), kept the Chiles girls from having a perfect fifteen-point score. Still, once Chiles junior Olivia Miller (7th, 21:10) crossed the finish line, the Timberwolves had seventeen points and the win. Leon was second with 44 points, and Community Christian third with 85.

Emily Culley

"The plan was to give it a pretty good effort without going too hard, especially after working hard last week," said Wallace. "Use it as a kind of workout."

The race concluded the regular season for Wallace. In 2016 she was seventh in the 3A girls' State Championship race. In 2017 she starts the State Championship Series with the 3A District 3 meet at Jacksonville on 25 October 2017, with the expectation of continuing to the 3A Region 1 meet at Lake City on 4 November 2017 and the State Final at Tallahassee's Apalachee Regional Park on 11 November 2017.

"I plan on probably running District about the same as today, and Region lighter," said Wallace. "Then get ready for State."

After the girls' race, there was even more Chiles up front in the boys' 5K, with the Timberwolves taking six of the first seven places. Leading the entire way, Chiles senior Matthew Newland took first in 16:18. Two more Chiles seniors took the next two places, with Michael Phillips inches ahead of Robert Nowak, both clocked in 16:37. Chiles junior Connor Phillips held off a charging Joseph Ashebo for fourth, 16:59 to 17:02. Ashebo, a Leon sophomore, was the only non-Timberwolf in the top five. Senior Noah Grzywacz closed out the scoring for Chiles, giving his team sixteen points and the win. Leon was second with 51 points. Rickards, led by senior Joseph Jones (10th, 17:55), was third with 75.

Chiles Michael Phillips is the defending state champion in class 3A. You'd have to consider him a strong contender to repeat after he ran 14:58.2 at the Great American Cross-Country Invitational on 7 October 2017. Phillips and Matthew Newland each had different approaches to the Red Hills race.

"I was racing hard," declared Newland.

"I was pacing Robert [Nowak]," said Phillips. "We needed to get everyone's confidence back after last week."

Michael Phillips, Robert Nowak

"Everyone did well today," said Newland.

With the District Championship coming up in eleven days, you can't argue that it's not important to have everyone running well and confident that they can continue performing at that level. After District, the last obstacle before State is the 3A Region 1 Championship at The Oaks Equestrian Center in Lake City. Chiles ran their earlier in 2017, placing second in the Alligator Lake Invitational. Newland and Phillips are looking for a different outcome for their team this time.

Connor Phillips

"Last time it wasn't really a race for us," said Phillips. "It was a workout."

"This time we want a first for sure," emphasized Newland.

And after Region, Chiles will be chasing more firsts at the State Final.

Soto and Ashby were conquerors at Comforter

Holy Comforter Episcopal School in Tallahassee, Florida has been hosting two annual middle school cross-country meets for quite a few years now, but it was only in 2014 that the second of the two was designated the Tallahassee Open Middle School Cross-Country Championships. It was at that meet on Thursday afternoon, 12 October 2017, that the Holy Comforter Crusaders swept the boys' and girls' team titles for the second time in the past three years. Crusader sixth-grader Mary Clayton Soto won the girls' 3K, running 12:36, her best time yet on Holy Comforter's home course. And coming all the way from Burns Middle School in Owensboro, Kentucky, seventh-grader Thomas Ashby took first in the boys' 5K with a 10:45.

Mary Clayton Soto

The middle school girls' 3K started a few minutes after 4:00 PM. Almost immediately after the start, Mary Clayton Soto was out ahead of the field. After half a kilometer it looked like the race was for second place. It was. Soto only widened her margin over the rest of the runners on her way to a 12:36 win. Liliana Lewis, a Wakulla sixth-grader, took control of second halfway through the race then went on to finish runner-up in 13:21. Holy Comforter seventh-grader Camille Resavage placed third in 13:44. Paige Campbell of Christ Classical held off Sophia Umana of Holy Comforter for fourth, 13:52 to 13:53.

The Holy Comforter girls also took the next two places, with eight-grader Kate Smith sixth in 14:00 and seventh-grader Grace Reichelderfer seventh in 14:15. After taking five of the first seven places, the Crusaders had a mathematically unbeaten score of 22 points and the 2017 Tallahassee Open team title, their third in the past four years. Led by eighth-grader Paige Campbell, Christ Classical was second in the six-team field with 84 points. Riversprings Middle School of Wakulla County took third with 91 points; the top Riversprings runner was sixth grader Haley Perry, nineteenth in 17:03.

The boys' 3K followed the girls' race, starting just after 4:30 PM. The 2016 champion, Holy Comforter eighth-grader Jackson Yarbrough, was in the field, but it was Leo Kelly and Thomas Ashby who burst out into the lead. A Holy Comforter eighth-grader, Kelly had already won an earlier race on Lawson's Course, taking the Crusader Classic two weeks earlier in 11:03. Ashby, doing most of his racing back home in Kentucky, had never run on Lawson's Course before, but he had notched three wins during the 2017 season back in the Bluegrass State.

Thomas Ashby, Leo Kelly

For most of the first kilometer Kelly and Ashby ran close together, Ashby just off of Kelly's shoulder. By the end of the kilometer, though, Ashby was setting the pace while Kelly followed. Halfway through the race, Ashby started to pull away. The gap only grew as Ashby ran home in a winning 10:45. Kelly took second in 10:59. Yarbrough, the defending champion, placed third in 11:45. Trinity Catholic seventh-grader William Stephenson was fourth in 12:07 and Maclay seventh-grader Aiden Van Iddekinge was fifth in 12:11.

Maclay put two more runners in the top ten, seventh-graders Grayson Oberste (6th, 12:17) and Jack Matthews (8th, 12:20). Ashley and Turner, Mosley and Arnold, are 2017 Bay County Cross-Country champs

In Bay County, Florida Bay District high schools Mosley, Arnold, Rutherford, and Bay each field cross-country teams, as does North Bay Haven Charter Academy. Two or more of those Bay County schools meet several times during the cross-country season. It's only at the Bay County Cross-Country Championships, though, that you'll find those schools and no others competing on the trails. The five teams convened for their annual championship on Tuesday morning, 10 October 2017, hosted by Arnold at Conservation Park in Panama City Beach. Mosley won the team title in the girls' 5K race, with Arnold frosh Marisa Ashley taking individual honors in 19:05. Arnold was the top team in the boys' 5K, a race won by Arnold senior Blake Turner in 17:40.

Competition commenced with the girls' 5K, scheduled for 8:30 AM. Throughout the 2017 season, whenever Arnold and Mosley were at a meet it was a smart bet that Arnold frosh Marisa Ashley and Mosley senior Ella Swigler would be the first two Bay County girls. That wisdom held for the County Championships, as Ashley took first in 19:05 and Swigler second in 19:58. Arnold senior Kaia Stevenson placed third in 22:39.

Arnold had a third runner in the top ten when sophomore Stephanie Lindig finished eighth in 27:00. Mosley, however, put four runners in the top ten--Swigler, juniors Catherine MacLean (5th, 24:54) and Rebecca Salazar (6th, 26:19), and frosh Hanna Altman (7th, 26:24). Frosh Leah Smith (19th, 29:58) completed Mosley's scoring, giving the team a narrow 39 to 41 victory over Arnold. Led by junior Darby Bennett (4th, 24:21), Rutherford was third with 55 points. North Bay Haven placed fourth with 77.

North Bay Haven, led by senior Bryce Johnston (5th, 19:39), was second with 56 points. Rutherford edged Mosley for third, 70 to 73. Bay was fifth with 131 points.

Mosley's quest for a spot at the State Final starts at the class 3A District 2 meet, scheduled for Saturday, 28 October 2017, at the old Bay Dunes Golf Course.
