The big change is that at all Leon County Schools meets, the race distance will be three kilometers instead of two miles. Three kilometers is about 219 meters shorter than two miles. Shorter isn't better, but it's in line with the middle school racing distance elsewhere--notably, the FLYRA Florida Middle School State Cross-Country Championship and the B3R Sports Florida Youth Cross-Country Championship. The other change is that the schedule is being expanded to six meets. The new event is the Falcon Invitational, scheduled for Thursday evening, 27 September 2018, at Fairview Middle School Phipps Park. The middle school season was extended to five meets in 2015 with the addition of a season opener on the Apalachee Regional Park Cross-Country Course (ARPXC). However, that opening event was rained out in 2015, and canceled due to hurricane damage in 2016, so 2017 was the only year that Leon County Schools actually ran five middle school cross-country meets.

Outside of Leon County Schools, Holy Comforter Episcopal School is again hosting two middle school cross-country meets--the Crusader Cross-Country Classic on Thursday afternoon, 20 September 2018, and the Tallahassee Middle School Open on Tuesday afternoon, 9 October 2018. Both meets open with an elementary school mile. The middle school races at Holy Comforter are three kilometers, by the way, and always have been.

There is also a three-kilometer race open to middle school athletes at Gulf Winds Track Club's Miller Landing Madness (18 August 2018), a middle school 3K at the Cougar Cross-Country Challenge in Phipps Park (25 August 2018), a three-kilometer middle school race at the second annual Big Bend Cross-Country Invitational at ARPXC (1 September 2018), a middle school two-mile at the Bearcat Invitational at Bainbridge (Georgia) High School (15 September 2018), and a middle school 3K at the Florida State University Cross-Country Invitational (12 October 2018). There's no shortage of races for Tallahassee's middle school cross-country runners in 2018. If anything, there's a danger of over-racing.
