Ian Hunter waltzes to Dance Marathon 5K victory

Ian Hunter led a field of 87 runners around the Florida State University campus before returning to the "Unconquered" statue on Langford Green as the first runner across the finish line of the 2009 Dance Marathon 5K on Sunday, 8 November 2009. A former cross-country runner for Miami Palmetto High School (c/o 2008), Hunter ran 19:36, finishing about 300 meters ahead of his closest competition, runner-up Michael Dobson, who ran 20:48. ΧΩ sister Caitlin Cameron was the first woman finisher, credited with a time of 24:00, or about 50 meters ahead of Siedah Fortune (24:14) .

The Dance Marathon 5K was run on an uncertified course that started and finished near the "Unconquered" statue on Langford Green, just across Champions Way from the University Center. The competitors had an optimal cool, clear autumn morning for their run, the kind of day that makes you want to check your lottery numbers.

No Turkeys Were Harmed in the Trotting of this Race

 title=
Over 3,600 athletes took advantage of a perfect Thanksgiving morning for distance running in Tallahassee on 26 November 2009 by running in one of Gulf Winds Track Club's four Turkey Trot races in the Southwood area. Chris Lake was the fleetest in the event's marquee race, the 15K, taking the lead early and never relinquishing it. Lake ran 51:19 to bury his nearest challenger, Gary Droze, who ran 52:49 to finish as runner-up and top master. Behind Lake and Droze, David Altmaier (53:18) and Jay Wallace (53:19) battled for the third spot while Tony Guillen (53:39) watched from fifth place. Amy Hines outran Sheryl Rosen for top woman honors, finishing 13th overall in 57:49 to Rosen's 16th place effort of 58:53. At 40th overall, Jane Johnson was the top woman master in 65:31.

Florida State's Tyler Price won the 10K race in 32:15, finishing almost a mile ahead of runner-up Matthew Mattson (37:44). Kristen Findley finished third overall to capture the top woman's spot with a 39:45. Holden Dickson (40:39) edged out Hamp Stoutamire (40:42) for fourth place, but Stoutamire finished as the first master in the 10K. In 41st place and the seventh woman overall, Kristen Baggett (46:27) was the top woman master.

The 5K was a much closer contest than the two longer races, with Nick Stenuf crossing the line barely ahead of Harry Norton. Both Stenuf and Norton were clocked in 14:52, the fastest road 5K in the Tallahassee area this year. Stenuf was a NCAA All-American in track and cross country at Nazareth (c/o 2008) and currently runs for the Syracuse Chargers TC, while Norton was a top miler at Dartmouth (c/o 2008). On the women's side, FSU cross-country coach Karen Harvey (17:38) outran one of her own runners, Kara Taylor (18:09), for the title. In master competition, Paul Carico was the first male master in, placing 16th overall in 18:25, just ahead of Reid Vannoy, 19th overall in 18:30. Krista Killius (21:28) and Julie Clark (21:32) had a similar close struggle for the top woman's master spot.

The races were run on two 5K loops, the second being a modified version of the first. This made the faster runners in the 10K and 15K victims of the popularity of the Turkey Trot--at several points after their first loop, they had to wade through throngs of slower runners and walkers in the 15K. The race directors made some course changes this year that somewhat alleviated the problem, but still haven't solved it. There is perhaps no solution short of having three entirely different loops or turning away over 2,000 5K participants, neither of which is a particularly desirable option. But the Turkey Trot management team has a year to puzzle it out before the next edition of the event on 25 November 2010.

2009 FHSAA State Cross-Country Championships

Just a few days before we all overdose on turkey, on 21 November 2009 athletics fans of the Sunshine State had the opportunity to overdose on cross-country running when the Florida High School Activities Association held its state championship meet. In just over three hours, eight five -kilometer races in four divisions were run, each one for a state title. It may not have left you feeling as bloated as Thanksgiving Day gluttony, but it was every bit as overwhelming.

7:30 am 1A Girls
The first starting gun of the morning was fired for the 1A girls race. Before even a kilometer had gone by, Kathryn Fluehr of the Community School of Naples had jumped out in front of her sister, Erika, and everyone else running. Behind the Fluehrs Maclay's Jana Stolting settled into third. Fellow Maclay runner Stephanie Kurgatt worked up through the field into fourth and briefly challenged Stolting for third, but in the end it was as it had been for most of the race--Kathryn Fluehr (17:00), Erika Fluehr (17:36), Jana Stolting (17:52), and Stephanie Kurgatt (18:03). Kathryn Fluehr's time appeared to labor up the final incline to the finish line, but still ran strong enough to win and to set a new Little Everglades course record of 16:59.53. Asked after the race about her struggle on the last hill, Fluehr quipped, "I live in Florida. We don't have hills." Last time I checked, Little Everglades Ranch was still in Florida. So is a cozy (and far from flat) little course at Apalachee Regional Park.

In spite of the one-two finish of the Fluehrs, Community School of Naples ended up third in the team standings with 104 points, failing to defend their 2008 title. Not far ahead, Holy Trinity (92 points) and Maclay School (97 points) respectively took home the champion and runner-up trophies.

7:55am 2A Girls
In the second race, no one ran away and hid early--or at all. Even past three kilometers, six runners were all in contention: Nicole Carpio of Ransom Everglades, Stephanie Schappert of Pope John Paul II, Stephanie Strasser of Fernandina Beach, Rebecca Chandler of Bolles, Joanna McCoy of Coral Shores, and Sarah Davis of Bishop Kenny. Those runners made up the lead pack as the race turned onto the infield of the Little Everglades steeplechase track. One by one the contenders fell off the lead group until on the final straightaway it was a battle of Stephanies, Schappert versus Strasser. In the end Schappert triumphed in the final yards, 17:59 to 18:03, with Nicole Carpio in the third spot at 18:09.

The individual race was one of Region 4 versus Region 1, but the team struggle was all Region 1--in fact, it was all Jacksonville. Region 1 runners-up Jacksonville Bolles performed when it counted and beat the Region 1 champions Jacksonville Bishop Kenny, 87 to 134. Victory was even sweeter for the Bolles girls for knowing that they had finished runners up to Bishop Kenny at the previous year's state championship.

8:20am 1A Boys
Patrick Swain was the defending champion. Patrick Swain was the pre-race favorite. Patrick Swain was content to let David Kilgore of Holy Trinity lead for most of the race and then go thundering by him going up the last hill for the win, 15:45 to 15:53. After winning a second straight state title, Swain was predictably asked if he would win a third. The Maclay runner wisely dodged the question. "If I say 'yes," it won't happen."

As it has been for the previous two years, the contest for the team title was between Melbourne Holy Trinity and Winter Park Trinity Prep. Trinity against Trinity--wasn't the Thirty Years' War fought over something like that? This year the Winter Park Trinity took home the champions' trophy, outscoring runner-up Holy Trinity 48 to 55. Not far back with 68 points was the third place team, P. K. Yonge.

8:45am 2A Boys
Tyler Davidson of Cocoa Beach led at one kilometer. He led at two kilometers. At three kilometers. Four kilometers. But they don't give lap prizes at the state meet, and four runners were following him closely--Colin Barker of Bishop Kenny, Erick Montoya of Estero, Michal Wallace of Bishop Kenny, and Argeo Cruz of Imokalee. Cruz faded badly in the final kilometer ending up tenth in 16:06, but Barker and Montoya were with Davidson on the final straightaway, setting up an unforgettable battle. The three slugged it out in front of the grandstands, but Barker had the superior kick and took the title in 15:23, while Montoya finished runner-up at 15:25 and Davidson took the bronze in 15:27. Wallace of Bishop Kenny was a close fourth at 15:31, but the rest of the field was over a hundred meters back.

The margin in the team contest was similarly slender, but Bishop Kenny was victorious there as well, defeating the runners-up from Estero 106 to 109. Any runner on either team could have swung that three-point difference one way or another, which has to give them something to think about while training or while finishing their next race.

9:05am 3A Girls
Bellview sophomore Anne-Marie Blaney was running near the front of the pack at the end of the first kilometer. Chiles sophomores Carly Thomas and Lily Williams were not, but they were close enough. By the end of the fourth kilometer Thomas and Williams were sharing the lead, with Blaney trailing in third. The Chiles runners, however, weren't able to entirely shake Blaney, setting up another dramatic finish. The three sophomores hit the final straightaway almost together. Thomas and Williams eventually got a few steps on Blaney. In the final yards, Thomas kicked past Williams for the gold, clocking 18:21. Williams's 18:22 was good enough for silver, while Blaney hung on for the bronze in 18:26. Kristin Zarella, the fourth place finisher, was almost a hundred meters farther back at 18:45.

Led by the one-two finish of Thomas and Williams, Chiles successfully defended it's state title, outscoring the runners-up from Lakewood Ranch 40 to 62. Fort Walton Beach finished out of the hardware in the third spot with 94 points.

9:30am 4A Girls
Mary Ann Brown of Orange Park bolted out to an early lead, but Winter Park's Shelby Hayes never lost sight of the front runner. Hayes overtook Brown and by the end of three kilometer led the fading Orange Park runner by over twenty seconds. Meanwhile, Freedom freshman Bridget Blake and Melbourne sophomore Vanessa Valentine were running down Brown. By the end of the fourth kilometer they had caught her and Blake started to make up ground on Hayes. Leaving the infield Blake was almost 200 meters down and over the final kilometer closed to within a hundred meters of Hayes. Still, that means that in the end Hayes won by almost a hundred meters--no exciting finishes in this race. Hayes championship-winning time was 18:14; Blake ran 18:31. Valentine took third in 18:43, ahead of erstwhile leader Brown, who finished fourth in 18:48.

Just as Blake couldn't catch Winter Park's Hayes, Melbourne couldn't catch Winter Park. Winter Park took the team title, outscoring runners-up from Melbourne 64 to 105. Lourdes finished just out of the hardware with 118 points in third.

9:55am 3A Boys
Leon High had won the boys' 3A team title in 2007 and 2008. Leon's Matt Mizereck had won the boys' 3A race in 2007 and 2008. With the 3A runners on the line, Ricky Quintana announced over the public address system that Pensacola Washington was ranked first in 3A, and Leon ranked third. Too bad, Leon. There's was always Mizereck, though.

But before the race could be run, it had to start. Twice the starting gun went off, and twice runner's went down in the first hundred yards and the field had to be recalled. The runners' nerves were on edge. But, as much as I hate to say that "the third time was the charm," the third time was the charm, and the race was on. Around the first turn Jimmy Clark of Creekside was near the front, as was Belen Jesuit's Elliot Clemente. Mizereck was about eight seconds back, running with his teammates Will Stanford and Riley Doherty. The leader passed 1,600m in 4:52. At the halfway point Clemente led, followed by Clark. Around three kilometers into the race Clemente had a three-second lead on Clark going down the backstretch. But Mizereck was coming. Moving up into third, Mizereck was on Clark's shoulder when the race moved onto the infield. By the time the runners finished the fourth kilometer Clark had moved into the lead. Mizereck and Clemente were right there with him. On the final straight Mizereck attacked. Clark tried to respond. Clemente did his best to hang on. Mizereck crossed the line first in 15:22, Clark trailing in 15:26. Clemente took the bronze in 15:29.

Behind the battle for the top spot, Stanford and Doherty took fourth and fifth for Leon, setting the Lions up to successfully defend their team title with a score of 59 points. Belen Jesuit, in their first year in 3A, took home the runners-up trophy with 103 points.

10:20am 4A Boys
The eighth and final race of the day was the 4A boys' championship. Brian Atkinson of Melbourne was the defending champion, and like Mizereck of Leon in the 3A race, Atkinson was a senior attempting to win a third straight state title. Atkinson's race also resembled Mizereck's in the early stages, with the Melbourne senior content to run a few seconds off the lead around the first turn. Atkinson, however, didn't wait for the final stretch to challenge for the lead. Before the race was half over Atkinson had moved out front and had already built a significant margin by three kilometers. Atkinson continued his charge all the way to the line and finished with a winning time of 15:21, the fastest mark recorded on the course all morning. Mark Parrish of Tampa Chamberlain was the silver medalist at 15:31 while Ryan Pickering of Leonard took the bronze with a 15:41.

Miami of Columbus' first athlete, Dominick Cabrera, finished fourth in 15:49, well out of the contest for the gold medal, but he was joined in the top ten by teammates Armando Del Valle (6th, 15:54) and Mark Gulesian (10th, 16:03). Columbus went on to an overwhelming team victory, topping the runners-up from Dr. Phillips 60 points to 126.

Finis
The meet was concluded with the awards ceremony. As a new touch, individual medals were presented by Rolf Steier, Bill Convey, Keith Brantley, and some old fogey, each of whom had won state titles back in the twentieth century. After the top teams and individuals had received their bling, it was time to break down team tents, pose for a few more photos, and pile into cars and team buses to go back home. Little Everglades Ranch was free of runners till next cross-country season, left to its sandhill cranes and dreams of horse racing.

Hours before the state meet at Little Everglades

"Boy, this is a lot better than what we had to run on," commented Bob Braman. "We always had to run the state meet around some school yard." Florida State's head track and field coach was looking over the course for Florida's high school cross-country state championships at Little Everglades Ranch, just north of Dade City.

I'm roughly of the same vintage as Coach Braman, but I don't remember the state championships as always being run on a high school campus. Half the time, maybe. What I do remember is that the courses were always flat. I've been at Florida cross-country state meets in Jacksonvillle, in South Plantation, and in Deland--and all of them featured course that were innocent of even the smallest hill. Little Everglades at least has some hills. Which you wouldn't necessarily expect because the course is built around a horse track. Well, it's a steeplechase track, so hills are almost a requirement.

I was out at Little Everglades Ranch on 20 November 2009, the day before the state meet. The course was open for inspection, making it one of very few days of the year that an ordinary person could go for a run out there. Little Everglades is privately owned, and you can only get to the track on the day of the state meet by paying a $7.00 parking fee and an $8.00 admission fee. Forget about running the course, unless you're a high school athlete who qualified to compete in one of the eight state championship races. There's also the Pre-State meet, but the rest of the year you have to be a horse to get onto the track, and I imagine the admission fees are even steeper to get into the stands.

So I jogged the course. It's five kilometers of cross-country and includes just over two full circuits of the horse track. The surface of the track isn't as smooth as it looks when you're watching the races, and it's soft. Soft is almost certainly good if you're a horse (or a person who had an economic interest in the leg bones of a $5,000,000 race horse). It's also good if you're a jockey who takes a spill during a steeplechase. (Hello, Prince Charles). It's not so good if you're running cross country. Five kilometers is challenging enough on firm ground, but this stuff is like a sponge that soaks up momentum.

The second circuit of the track is interrupted by a detour onto the infield. The ground on the infield is no smoother than the track, but it is a lot firmer. The short layout on the infield also features some tighter turns than the track, which is all straights and gentle curves. There is even a 180-degree turn near a dead tree. A sign on the turn reads "Bus Stop." This probably means something during horse race events at Little Everglades, but seems comically out of place during the state cross-country meet.

The high school runners out at the course seemed to be having a good time. Tomorrow is serious business, but today was stretching out the legs on good green grass, and setting up team tents for tomorrow. Lots and lots of tents. The numbers of tents suggest a military encampment, but the haphazard placement and assortment of sizes and colors tell a different story. The teams will want their tents during the state meet--it is going to get warm and bright as the morning wears on on Saturday, and there isn't a lot of shade at Little Everglades.

The day before was also a time for team pictures. I'm sure that team pictures will also be taken the day of the state meet, especially by the teams taking home trophies. But people wanted pictures of their teams today, while the runners will still full of hope. A few teams tried to take photos standing behind a banner proclaiming "FHSAA CROSS COUNTRY FINALS--HIGH SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIPS." This made a fine picture. Unfortunately, posing for this picture would bring a man out of the woodwork: "No one is allowed on the infield! No one is allowed on the infield!" he would bluster. "It's against Little Everglades track policy! Against track policy! See? See what has already happened?" He gestured at a banner on the fence; it's corner had come loose. Apparently the nylon "tie" securing it had broken, a material failure no doubt caused by the presence of unauthorized people on the wrong side of the fence. Still, the gate was open, and there wasn't a sign telling you not to go through the gate, so people kept trying to line up for a photo, and the officious little man kept chasing them away. I think he was having a good time.

Around 4:30 an announcement came over the public address system that we had thirty minutes before we all had to go away, no matter what side of the fence we were on. By then I had seen all but a mile of the course and had plenty of time to finish surveying that. The officious little man had replaced the broken nylon "tie." So everyone drifted away from Little Everglades. Cross-Country begins early enough on Saturday.

Andrews captures the Cops For Kids 5K title

Stephen Andrews ran 21:08 for the win at the "Cops For Kids" 5K on Saturday morning, 7 November 2009. Andrews finished about 120 meters in front of the runner-up and top master Dan Anderson, who clocked 21:38. Anderson was right in front of another Andrews, Micah, third at 21:49. The first woman in was Tara Galinos, who finished eighth overall in 26:17. Lynda Pfundstein was the top woman master, ninth overall in 26:57.

76 athletes completed the course, which started on a hilltop at the end of Southern Oaks Drive. The runners headed down the hill onto Barfield Road and across Edenfield Road, where they made a circuit of the Lafayette Oaks neighborhood. After touring Lafayette Oaks, the athletes retraced their steps on Barfield and Southern Oaks, climbing the hill they had initially descended. The race was a fund-raiser for Cops For Kids, Inc., which "has provided more than 4,000 bicycles, helmets, clothing, and school supplies to needy youth in the Big Bend Community."

2009 FHSAA Region 1-3A / 2A Cross Country Meet

On 14 November 2009 Florida's capital was the cross-country running capital of north Florida, as high school teams from Pensacola to Jacksonville converged on Sunnyhill Farm in Tallahassee for the Region 1 championship. It's the last step in Florida's state championship series before the actual state championship meet at Little Everglades Ranch near Dade City. The class 2A and 3A teams in the competition were fighting to qualify for a trip to the state meet. 56 teams arrived at the course that morning, but only 24 would go on to the state championships.

The 3A girls ran first. The runners disappeared from the starting field immediately, but by the end of the first mile reports came back that Chiles' Lily Williams had taken the lead, closely trailed by her teammate Carly Thomas, the defending champion of Region 1. For the rest of the 5K race Williams and Thomas continued to move away from the rest of the field, but Williams never got away from Thomas. When the leaders burst into sight of the finish line back on the starting field, it was still all Williams and Thomas, and that's how it remained, with Lily Williams winning the Region 1 title in 18:30, and Thomas a few steps back in 18:32. With four runners in the top ten and all five scorers in the top 20, Chiles won its seventh-straight Region 1-3A team title with 34 points, comfortably ahead of the 59 points scored by runners-up Fort Walton Beach. Ridgeview (114 points), Creekside (119 points), Vanguard (149 points), and Niceville (171 points) also qualified to advance to the state championships.

"The best running talent in northeast Florida is Jimmy Clark," declared my Usually Reliable Albeit Disreputable Source from Jacksonville the afternoon before the Region 1 meet. The Source's assessment was confirmed during the second half 3A boys race, as Creekside's Jimmy Clark ran away from almost all of his competitors. However, he Clark couldn't shake off Leon's two-time state cross-country champion, Matt Mizereck, and Mizereck ran by him on the final stretch for the win, 15:27 to 15:29. In the team standings, Leon took three of the top four places and the Region 1-3A title, scoring 62 points. Runners-up Pensacola Washington scored 82. The other teams qualifying for the state championships were Fort Walton Beach (83 points), Niceville (158 points), Chiles (177 points), and Navarre (181 points). Clark's performance turned out to be one of the few bright spots for northeast Florida, as none of the District 2 teams advanced to the state meet.

By the second kilometer of the 2A girls' 5K, Stephanie Strasser of Fernandina Beach had started to move away from the rest of the runners in the race. Running steadily through three kilometers before slowing slightly on the last two kilometers, Strasser crossed the finish line in 18:18, the fastest girls' time on the course that morning. Bishop Kenny's Sarah Davis was the next runner in at 18:42, followed by her teammate Elizabeth Tucker in 19:02. Davis and Tucker led Bishop Kenny to a narrow team victory over their Jacksonville rivals, Bolles, 46 to 49. Episcopal (72 points) , Matanzas (148 points), South Walton (169 points) and West Florida (202 points) also won the right to compete at the state championships.

Bishop Kenny was even more dominant in the 2A boys' race, as B.K.'s Colin Barker and Michael Wallace ran away from the rest of the field to capture the top two spots in 16:06 and 16:09. Kenny's fifth scorer crossed the line in seventeenth, and Bishop Kenny won the Region 1-2A boys' title with 35 points. Nease placed as a distant runner-up with 83 points. The remaining four state qualifiers were Bolles (153 points), Matanzas (156 points), Fernandina Beach (161 points), and West Florida (175 points). In almost a reverse of the situation in the Region 1-3A boys' race, five of the six teams to qualify were from northeast Florida, and West Florida was the only District 1 team to advance to the state championships.

The Region 1 3A / 2A meet marked the debut of Sunnyhill Farm as a cross-country running venue. The farm is private property, closed to runners throughout the year, which makes it neutral ground--it's no one's home course, so no one has a home course advantage. The hills are gentle, most of the ground is soft, and the footing is punctuated by holes, but this is cross country. It's a scenic place to run, with a good mix of woods and fields. For spectators--well, there's plenty of parking. You get to see a couple of hundred meters of the start of each race and a couple of hundred meters at the end of each race. A short stroll across a hedgerow will get you a view across a peanut field of another few hundred meters of the race, but that's it. For most fans, this isn't a good spectator course.

From the Region 1 meet, qualifiers advance to the FHSAA cross-country state championship at Little Everglades Ranch north of Dade City, Florida on November 21. There, the Tallahassee Leon boys will attempt to defend their 2008 FHSAA-3A state title, the Tallahassee Chiles girls will attempt to defend their 2008 FHSAA-3A state title, the Bishop Kenny girls will attempt to defend their FHSAA-2A state title, and the Bishop Kenny boys will attempt to win their seventh state title.
