Apalachee Regional Park Cross-Country Course Map Released

With the Florida State University Cross-Country Invitational less than two weeks away, FSU has released the "final" map of the course at Apalachee Regional Park.
The map was drawn by Florida State University coach Karen Harvey. There is no compass rose, but the top of the map is east, so Lake Lafayette is to the left (north) and US 27 / Apalachee Parkway is to the right (south).

The FSU Cross-Country Invitational will be the inaugural event on the course; it is scheduled for the morning of Saturday, 10 October 2009 and will include collegiate, high school, and open races.
  • 7:50am College Men’s 8k
  • 8:30am College Women’s 5k
  • 9:00am High School Varsity Boys 5k
  • 9:30am High School Varsity Girls 5k
  • 10:10am Open Male 5k (open to all ages)
  • 10:40am Open Female 5k (open to all ages)
  • 11:00am College and High School Team Awards
Visitors to the course should stay the heck away from the radio-controlled airfield. They don't strafe the course, runners shouldn't intefere with their planes. If anything, we have a common enemy out at the Apalachee Regional Park--the feral pigs that wander out of the woods and dig everything up.

Before the Invitational there will be one last workday on the course on the morning of Sunday, 4 October 2009. The Apalachee Regional Park cross-country course was developed through a partnership of the Leon County Division of Parks and Recreation, the Gulf Winds Track Club, and Florida State University. The course is located in Apalachee Regional Park, 7550 Apalachee Parkway, or on US 27 about 4-and-a-half miles east of the intersection of US 319 (Capital Circle) and US 27 (Apalachee Parkway).

Lost on the Quail Trail

Pebble Hill Plantation opened its gates on Saturday morning, 26 September 2009, and welcomed runners to the Quail Trail 5K and the Thomasville Invitational cross-country meet. When the morning was over Steven Cox had won the Quail Trail in 22:01 while Nancy Stedman won the women's division in 24:38. In the high school races, Maclay's Jana Stolting opened her season by winning the girls' race with an 18:43, finishing over a quarter mile ahead of the runner-up, Stefanie Kurgatt. The title in the boys' race went to David Daniel, a Thomasville High senior who ran 17:39 to finish 10 seconds ahead of his nearest challenger, Maclay's Austin Stevens.

You may have noticed the somewhat unusual winning times for the Quail Trail. If they seem a bit slow for a 5K, well, they are. Very early in the race the runners were led astray and everyone ended up running 6-1/3 kilometers, or some other odd distance. Estimates vary, but all opinions agreed that the course as run was farther than 5K. This started with the reluctance of Pebble Hill's management to allow their beautiful grounds to be defaced with chalked course markings. So for the Quail Trail 5K, the only markings were a few inadequate signs here and there, about the size of a sheet of typing paper and hand lettered. There was a lead vehicle, but the driver didn't know the course. There seemed to be course workers at every intersection, but somehow the field missed a turn anyway.

Apparently everyone ran the same route, though, and it wasn't a PR course anyway. Plus, everyone got to see some beautiful plantation land (although I doubt anyone was paying much attention to scenery after the third mile).

After the last of the Quail Trail runners had been shooed off the plantation roads, it was time for the high school cross-country program of the Thomasville Invitational. The high school runners seemed to have better success at staying on the course. Possibly their course was marked better, or their lead vehicle was driven by someone who actually knew where to go. Or perhaps their coaches had bullied them into going over the course before the race. That's always a good idea.

The girls' race was the opening contest of the season for Maclay's Jana Stolting, who had missed her team's first two competitions. Stolting cruised into the lead early and stayed there. The top three places went to Maclay, as Stolting was trailed in by teammates Stefanie Kurgatt (20:18) and Shelby Salimone (21:10). Sweeping the top three places certainly didn't hurt Maclay in the team standings, and the Marauders defeated runners-up Lee County High School 34 to 89. Lee County ended up just two points ahead of third-place team, Bainbridge.

Similarly to Stolting, Thomasville High's David Daniel took an early lead in the boys' race. Daniel--the 2008 Georgia Region 1-2A champion--never built the kind of lead that Stolting enjoyed, but still crossed the line well ahead of Maclay's Austin Stevens and Maclay's Patrick Swain (18:21). Nevertheless, Maclay won the team crown, outscoring runner-up Bainbridge 40 to 64.

In spite of the snafus, it might still be worth going back to the Quail Trail next year. The setting is beautiful, the high school competition is great, and there might still be some folks lost out there that we need to look for.

Kurgatt, Doherty win 2009 Lincoln Cross-Country Invitational

The Lincoln Invitational doesn't care that you're a state cross-country champion. It doesn't even care if you're the defending champion. This was evident on Saturday, 19 September 2009, when Riley Doherty ran 16:19 over the Tom Brown Park 5K course for the win, ahead of FHSAA-1A champion Patrick Swain, FHSAA-3A champion Matt Mizereck, and defending Invitational champion Will Stanford. In the girls race there were no state champions or defending champions to be dethroned, and in a re-run of Monday's Cougar Challenge Maclay's Stefanie Kurgatt ran away from teammate Kristin Sweeney to claim the title, 19:59 to 20:26.

A morning meet in past years, the Invitational opened at 5:00 pm in Tom Brown Park with the girls' 5K race. Or at least the start was scheduled for 5:00 pm. Girls from 13 schools waited on the line for ten minutes for the race to start while a light rain fell. Finally the starting gun fired and the runners charged down a grassy slope. After the initial scramble, Maclay's Sweeney took the lead early in the first mile as the runners moved over the Goose Pond Trail bike path. On the second mile as the course ran through the woods, though, the lead belonged solely to Kurgatt, with Sweeney and Maclay senior Lindsey Sanders holding the next two positions. However, behind the Maclay vanguard the Leon girls were moving up through the field. Maclay held the first three positions all the way to the line, but Sanders had to fight off Leon's Allison Clarke for third, 22:12 to 22:14. Maclay had the first three positions in hand, but Leon had the next four, and for the fans of both teams there was a tense wait for the fifth runners to decide the team title. In the end Maclay's Lindsey Poole (19th, 23:50) and Elizabeth Santoro (28th, 24:14) were in well before Leon's Taylor McMahon (74th, 29:15), and Maclay took the team title, defeating the defending champion Leon 53 to 88.

The threat of rain fading, the boys' race started as soon as the girls were off the course. Even after half a mile as the runners traversed the Goose Pond Trail bike path, the mob was led by some raging optimists, but Doherty, Swain, and Mizereck were just off the lead, with defending champion Stanford back in the pack. By the middle of the second mile, Doherty and Swain were leading through the woods with Mizereck trailing in third. Swain moved out in front on the third mile and had a respectable lead around the last turn, a hairpin bend around a pine tree. Doherty rounded the tree seconds behind him. Swain looked cool and unreadable as usual. Doherty looked nothing but determined, and went after the leader on the final straight. The spectator noise increased as Doherty overtook and passed Swain, winning by less than half a second. 200 meters back, Stanford of Leon had moved up through the field to end up in third place at 16:57. Two-time state champion Mizereck faded to eleventh, where he finished in 18:02.

Leon placed its five scorers in the top twelve, so there was less drama in the boys' team competition than in the girls'. Leon ended up winning for the fourth year in a row with 37 points, while Maclay's 75 points was good enough for the Marauders to placed second, improving on their 2008 third-place performance.

More hot competition in high school cross country lays ahead, most notably in three weeks at the October 10 Florida State University Cross-Country Invitational at the new Apalachee Regional Park cross-country course.

Scheitlin, Robida Take Tallahassee Women's Distance Fest Titles

Kelsey Scheitlin overtook Micah Adriani in the last mile of a hilly 5K course to win the 2009 Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival on Saturday morning, 19 September 2009. Scheitlin finished in 19:00, 19 seconds ahead of the second woman in, Sarah Docter-Williams, who finished as top woman master in the event. Adriani was the third woman across the line in 19:36, just ahead of last year's runner-up, Sheryl Rosen, at 19:37. Meanwhile, in the men's race, John Robida took the lead soon after the start and never relinquished it to finish as top male in 16:34. He was stalked by the top male master, Jay Wallace, who crossed the line second overall in 16:45. Defending champion David Altmaier finished fourth in 17:39 behind Vince Molosky's 17:13.

The Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival is part of the Road Runners Club of America's series of Women's Distance Festival races around the country. The Tallahassee edition of the Festival started out as a women's-only race, evolved into an event with separate men's and women's races, and finally arrived at its current format, a 5K race in which the women start five minutes ahead of the men. It's interesting to note that the AAU mandated that the 1972 New York Marathon be run with the women competitors being given a ten-minute head start, but that this rule was protested as being demeaning to the women.

The course is USATF certified (FL00022DL) and starts and finishes near Optimist Park in the Indianhead Acres section of Tallahassee. There are some hilly sections--mountain runners may scoff, but no one will mistake this for a flat course.
