Maegan McCarthy topped the women's field, finishing sixth overall in 21:01. McCarthy formerly ran cross country for Tampa's Plant High School (c/o 2005). The next woman finisher and top woman master was Lilburn, Georgia's Kim Walters, who finished 13th overall in 22:14.

Over 200 runners finished the first year event, a benefit for the Southern Scholarship Foundation, which since 1955 has enabled students in financial need to attend FSU, FAMU, UF, and FGCU by providing rent-free housing. Not entirely coincidentally, the president of the foundation is Mickey Moore, the runner-up in the Education For Life 5K. The race started and finished on FSU's Mike Long Track, touring the west side of campus on a mostly flat USATF certified course (FL06015DL). The same course was used earlier this year for the Special Olympics of Leon County 5K.

Lake and Hines beat the storm at Rose City

Chris Lake is undefeated in local races since 2008. He hasn't lost since the 2008 Palace Saloon 5K, where he finished in second just three seconds behind winner Nick Sunseri. Lake's two-year winning streak covers at least sixteen races of distances ranging from one mile to ten miles and has included the Springtime 10K, the Palace Saloon 5K, and two Turkey Trot 15K titles. Until Saturday, however, he had never run Thomasville's Rose City 10K.

"Where do I go to register?" he asked Friday.

So Lake put his winning streak on the line, the starting line of the 33rd annual Rose City 10K at 8:00am on 24 April 2010. 32 minutes and 51 seconds later he had his seventeenth straight win and first Rose City 10K title. Runner-up Christopher Rice finished 350 meters back in 34:04, with Daniel Lee (34:17) taking third and Vince Molosky (34:30) fourth. Jay Wallace took top master (over 40) honors, finishing fifth overall in 34:48.

In the women's division, Amy Hines was also experiencing the Rose City event for the first time. Like Lake, she found this to be no handicap and cruised to a win in 37:42, finishing about the time that Sheryl Rosen and Lisa Johnson were passing the six-mile mark. Late in the sixth mile Rosen and Johnson were still running side by side, but Rosen pulled away over the last few hundred meters to take the runner-up spot in 39:06, while Johnson was third among the women with a 39:17. Thomasville's own Mary Anne Grayson finished as top woman master in 42:07.

Not long after Grayson crossed the finish line the rains started. The soaking didn't seem to discourage the distribution of free soda, ice cream, and hot dogs, but it did lead to the cancellation of the kids' mile. Still, you have to expect an "April Shower" at the Rose City Run every decade or so, and you didn't have to scramble around looking for sun screen while waiting for the awards.

Beyond age grading with Dr. Schweinfleisch

I was naturally excited when I read the latest about age-graded running results. Obviously, I just needed to look up some of my recent results on an age-grading table, and the times would be revealed to be every bit as competitive as I was in high school or college. By taking into account the half-century (less five days) that I've spent on this planet I would be credited with the glory that my sweat in local 5K races had surely entitled me to.

But I was disappointed. The age-graded adjustments given to men of my age weren't very significant. Age grading might move me ahead of a couple of 25-year olds that had outkicked me recently, but that was about it. I had missed out on the generous adjustment I would have gotten as an eight-year-old, but I saw that I could look forward to similar advantage at age 90. I also noticed that I could do especially well on the tables if, say, Athletics South Africa were to declare that I was a woman. After all, it had worked for Caster Semenya. On the other hand, a lot of real women run faster than I do, as do more than a few men ten years older than I am. Age grading didn't seem to be the key to proving my worth on the roads.

In addition to being thirty years older than when I was trying to crack 29 minutes in the 10K, I'm also a little more massive--say about 20 kilograms worth. Was there such thing as weight grading? What would weight grading say about my current performances? Well, you can find anything on the internet, and I discoverd that Dr. Wilhelm Schweinfleisch of the Porque Institute was not only working on this very problem, but was also traveling through Tallahassee on his way to a conference. I contacted Dr. Schweinfleisch and he agreed to meet me at my offices at Burger King. The doctor smiled pityingly as I ordered a Small combo; he then stepped up and asked for a triple Whopper with cheese value meal.

"Small, medium, or large?" asked the woman at the register.

"Enormous," said Dr. Schweinfleisch.

"So, Dr. Schweinfleisch..." I began.

"Please, call me Willi," insisted the doctor, shoveling fries into his mouth.

"Willi, then. What can you tell me about weight grading of athletic performances?"

Schweinfleisch laughed, spraying fragments of char-broiled beef. "Weight is not a relevant enough measure. A six-foot-four man of 200 pounds is not carrying the same amount of excess weight as a five-foot-eight man also of 200 pounds. You must use the Body Mass Index."

"And you have a handicapping table for Body Mass Index grading?"

"One of my tables is for that, yes," said Dr. Schweinfleisch, taking a pull on his chocolate shake. "I also have a table for handicapping based on LDL cholesterol levels. I'm working on an arthritis-grading system, but it is very difficult to quantify joint damage. It's the same problem I had with my ADHD-grading tables, and it may delay publication."

"Where do you think you'll publish your work?"

"Look for it in Runner's World."

Dr. Schweinfleisch noticed that it was time to leave to catch his flight, so he grabbed a few slices of pie for his drive to the airport and said goodbye. Be on the lookout for his article, though. It's sure to revolutionize athletic competition.

15th annual Palace Saloon 5K, 15 April 1989

Back with more "results from the attic," here's the invitational section and the open section of the 1989 Palace Saloon 5K, directed by Larry Jennings. For the 15th annual race, Jennings endured one of the nightmares of every race director when it rained the morning of the event. The fields for the Palace had approached 400 finishers in 1988 and 1990, but on that wet morning the number of runners crossing the finish line dipped below 300.

The athletes who did run didn't seem to be put out by the weather at all. Rick Miller won in a very respectable 15:23, outkicking Tim Simpkins (captured on film by Rex Cleveland). The open section preceded the invitational, so any open runners who cared to hang around in the rain were able to witness the dramatic finish. Yvonne Gsteiger was the top woman in 19:05, finishing tenth overall in the invitational section.

The results presented here were transcribed from a 1989 issue of the newsletter of the Gulf Winds Track Club, the Fleet Foot. Both photos were taken by newsletter editor Rex Cleveland and appeared on the cover of the Fleet Foot. The first shows #838 Rick Miller (1st, 15:23) driving for the finish line ahead of Tim Simpkins (2nd, 15:26) and everyone else in the race. The other photo shows #837 Lynn Mendoza (13th, 20:32) arriving in front of the Palace Saloon as the fourth woman finisher. Those familiar with the Tallahassee running scene will see several familiar names in the results--some who aren't running anymore, others who are running quite a bit more slowly nowadays, and still others who (most unfairly of all) are running every bit as fast now as they were then.

A 5K road loop in Tom Brown Park

One thing that directors of established road races seldom have to worry about is a course. The next director of the Boston Marathon, the Palace Saloon 5K, or the Springtime 10K won't have to come up with a course, won't have to agonize over finding a venue with decent parking, access to restrooms, and a minimum of traffic. Even if the course is lousy, tradition excuses you from improving it.

New events aren't so lucky. Of course, there's nothing to prevent the newly-minted director of the First Annual 5K Charity Run/Walk for Cross-eyed Kittens from using the course of an established race. This is easy enough to do because in spite of my protests, most of these races are 5K runs. Old timers on the Tallahassee running scene will bore you to death with reminiscences about how every other 5K in town in the 1970s and 1980s was run as two loops around Messer Field. The Maclay Gardens State Park 5K course gets used for several races each year, in spite of the fact that the Gardens are bursting to the seams when a race attracts over 200 runners. Races on the Florida State University campus recycle the same few 5K courses over and over again.

There are also several 5K races held in Tom Brown Park. Tom Brown is a fine venue for a road race. There is plenty of parking. There are many public toilets. Tom Brown Park's stretch of the Goose Pond Trail is 1.55 miles of paved, multi-use trail on which you can run without fear of being flattened by a tractor trailer.

In spite of this, there is no decent road-race course in Tom Brown Park.

For starters, most of them aren't road race courses. The Lincoln High School Invitational 5K is, quite unashamedly, a cross-country race. The AIDS 5K , the Tails and Trails, and the Schools Stomping out Diabetes 5K runs, however, all included long stretches of hiking trails or other terrain that would be considered cross country. The Fallen Heroes 5K stayed mostly to pavement, but only by having two 180-degree turns on the Goose Pond Trail--which also meant that you had runners going in two different direction trying to use the same narrow trail. The Goose Pond Trail can't really handle two-way traffic in a large footrace, but it's adequate for several hundred runners of one-way traffic, say as part of a loop.

So here is a 5K loop course for Tom Brown Park.

Start on the Goose Pond Trail near Pavilion 13 and head towards Weems Road. Better yet, start on the park road parallel to the trail near the Pavilion, and then turn onto the trail where it crosses the road. This gives you more room for the runners at the start of the race. At the end of the trail, turn left onto Weems and head up the hill to Easterwood Drive. Turn left onto Easterwood Drive. Just after the tennis courts but before Easterwood takes you out of Tom Brown Park and on to Connor Boulevard, turn left onto a park road that takes you downhill and past the Lake Leon playground. Near the dog park, this park road makes a very close approach to the Goose Pond Trail. Hop over to the trail and continue to the vicinity of Pavilion 13 and the finish line.

The loop is extremely close to being exactly five kilometers. Close to two kilometers of that is on the traffic-free Goose Pond Trail. Easterwood and Weems aren't sleepy country lanes, but they aren't highways, either. Tom Brown Park is perched on the slopes of the Lake Lafayette basin, so there are some hills--but is that a bad thing? I've described the loop going counter-clockwise, but it's a loop--there's nothing to prevent a hypothetical race director from sending runners around it clockwise, or changing the location of the start.

Of course, there's nothing to prevent a hypothetical race director from continuing to send runners around hair-pin turns on the Goose Pond Trail, or through the woods to play "Find-the-Root" on the hiking paths. But now you'll know that they had another option.

Stolting makes it official, signs with San Francisco

In a ceremony at the school gymnasium, Maclay senior Jana Stolting signed a letter of intent to attend the University of San Francisco next fall. Stolting will be running cross-country and track for the Dons starting with the 2010-2011 season.

Even though the 2010 high school track season is not quite over, Stolting will already be graduating this spring as one of the fastest high school girl distance runners in the althletics history of Tallahassee and Leon County. Her 3200m time of 10:41.54 is the best ever in the area, and her 1600m time of 4:57.64 is eclipsed only by Kathy Ward's 4:55.72. Stolting has so many FHSAA-1A district and region titles in track and cross country that I despair at counting them all. In her final high school cross-country race Stolting won the 2009 Florida Athletic Coaches Association Senior All-Star race, leading her region's team to victory.

In moving to the Other Coast, I'm sure that Stolting will miss iconic Tallahassee events like the Palace Saloon 5K. But San Francisco has the Bay-To-Breakers, and if she's not planning on winning it then she's already working on a costume.
