2010 college cross-country season in the Tallahassee area

The weather may not have given a hint of it yet, but cross-country season is coming. I can't imagine how many high school teams there are within a hundred miles of Tallahassee. It would be like guessing the number of jelly beans in a large jarful--where the number keeps changing and all the jelly beans are different sizes. Keeping up with all the high school meets in that area would be even more difficult. Many high school races haven't been scheduled yet, will be largely unannounced before they happen, and there will be no record of them after they're held.

The colleges are a different matter. There aren't that many of them in the area, not all of them field cross-country teams, and their schedules tend to be settled and published in advance of the season. Based on those schedules, here are the college cross-country meets that are taking place this season in the Trouble Afoot! coverage area (i.e., a hundred miles or less from Tallahassee). Maybe there's one near enough to you that you can get out and watch the harriers.

Cook and Rosen lead the Madness

The story is that cross-country event organizers in Europe want nothing more than to have a muddy course for their runs. To that end, they want rain. They pray for rain. They hire witches to conjure up rain. If rain fails, they soak the course with fire hoses the night before the race. The story is that the Europeans are serious about their mud.

It's not such a big thing with us in Tallahassee. But Tom Perkins, race director for the Miller Landing Madness 8K, 5K, and 3K races, had a little bit of that European love-for-mud in him the morning of his event, 28 August 2010.

"Did you see my mud patch?" asked Perkins.

"Your mud patch?" I responded in confusion. I'm often confused when talking to race directors.

"Yeah, my mud patch. I could only make one of them."

"Oh, you mean where the 5K course and the 8K course split."

"Yeah, that's it," beamed Perkins. "That's my mud patch!"

By the end of Saturday morning over 400 runners had seen his mud patch, the runners in the Miller Landing Madness 8K, 5K, and 3K, all of whom had to make at least one trip around or through the mud. The rest of the course through Elinor Klapp Phipps Park was excellent for running, firm and well-drained in spite of the rain the day before the races.

Florida State University grad student Kevin Cook didn't seem to have a problem with the footing or anything else as he won the 8K race in 26:28. Last year's champion, Chris Lake, never let Cook get out of sight, but he couldn't catch Cook, either, and had to settle for the runner-up spot in 26:42. It was Lake's first loss since the 2008 Palace Saloon 5K. Just behind Lake, Peter Wood outdueled Daniel Roberts for third, 26:46 to 26:47. Tallahassee's Michael Martinez was the top master runner, finishing seventh overall in 32:45. Sheryl Rosen (12th, 33:29) dominated the women's division, finishing more than half a kilometer ahead of the second-place female, Katie Showman (33rd, 37:50). Kirsten Baggett was the first woman master to finish, placing 66th overall in 42:26.

In the 5K Patrick Swain ran 17:15 for the win. Swain, a cross-country runner at Maclay School, is the defending Florida high school cross country champion in class A. Swain's teammate at Maclay, Austin Stevens, took second in 17:20, while the next two places went to Jacob Slupecki (17:22) and Travis Covert (17:45). Terance Keenan of Tallahassee was the top master, running 19:26 to finish 13th overall. Maclay School's Stefanie Kurgatt (11th, 19:22) was the first female, well ahead of runner-up Micah Adriani (16th, 20:17). Nancy Stedman (52nd, 24:19) was the first woman master in the 5K.

Wil Luca outran Sukhi Khosla for the 3K title, 11:14 to 11:25. Madeline Horgan was the first female finisher, 21st overall at 13:30.

I have one last story from the race. As I was taking pictures of the 8K, one of the slower runners went by me with about a mile to go.

"What's your name?" she called out.

"Herb Wills," I replied.

"I'm Patti," she said. "And I'm going to finish."

She did. 1:09:54.

Ireland and Bokenfohr winners at this beach party

Providence Christian School cross-country coach Nicholas Ireland ran 17:52 on the trails of Westgate Park to win the "Life is a Beach" 5K on 21 August 2010 in Dothan, Alabama. Ireland finished over half a kilometer ahead of the runner-up, Dothan's Tyler Scheidt (20:02). Theron Carter of Brundidge, Alabama ran 20:11 to place third and take the top master spot. Competition was much tighter in the women's division, with Katrina Bokenfohr (11th, 21:50) crossing the finish line just a few steps ahead of her twin sister Kristina Bokenfohr (13th, 21:52). The Bokenfohrs are sophomores and runners on the cross-country team at Enterprise (Alabama) High School. Melissa Unrath (17th, 22:21) of Enterprise was the first woman master and third woman overall.

There were 113 recorded finishers in the "Life is a Beach" 5K. The run was held on Westgate Park's Larry & Rona Dykes Trail, a 3.5-mile course that sees a lot of races. The Pilgrim Chase Trail Run, the Last Gasp Trail Run, The Leprechuan Chase Trail Run, the Five-A-Day, the Minuteman Trail Run, the Brian Dowling Memorial 5K, and the entire Hot Summer Nights series are among the events staged on the loop at Westgate. The course is convenient. Traffic control is not a problem. And it doesn't hurt that it's one of the best cross-country courses in the region.

Dashing through the streets of Pelham, Georgia, Cullen Edwards ran 21:39 to win the second annual Hornet's Nest 5K road race on Saturday morning, 21 August 2010. Edwards is starting his junior year at Pelham High School where he runs on the cross-country team. He finished the race a scant five seconds ahead of the runner-up, Guthrie Edwards. The top master runner in the race was Terry Durham of Albany, Georgia; Durham finished sixth overall in 25:56. Another Pelham High cross-country runner, Beth Philips, was first female, placing ninth overall in 26:46. Anna Wade of Leesburg was the fastest woman master of the morning, placing 14th overall in 29:10.

The Hornet's Nest 5K is hosted by the Pelham High School cross-country team with Coach Ashley Hutto as race director. The race is a fund raiser for the team's upcoming season. 24 athletes finished this year's edition of the Hornet's Nest run, down from last year's total of 47 finishers in the inaugural running of the event.

Winters and Jackson winners at Vineyard Run

Around late July when you're running on the trails of north Florida you'll notice them. You may not see them, but you'll smell their fruity pungency as you run by. If you look down, you'll see them at your feet--dark purple, almost black. If you look up, you may be able to spot them hanging from their vines, high up in the trees. They're muscadines, Florida's native grape, and August is muscadine harvest time. So every August, Florida A & M University's Center for Viticulture and Small Fruit Research holds a Grape Harvest Festival at their offices east of Tallahassee on Mahan Drive near the I-10 / US 90 interchange. The festival includes grape tastings, wine tastings, hot-air balloon rides, live music, grape-throwing, and the Vineyard 5K run.

Or the not-quite-5K run. At this year's Festival on Saturday, 21 August 2010, race management hadn't made sure that a gate on the race course was unlocked, and the lead vehicle had to take the runners on a somewhat shorter tour of FAMU's vineyards. Runners are adaptable, though, and everyone continued to race. Shuaib Winters, a distance runner on FAMU's track team, was first to complete the abbreviated run in 12:15. His teammate Lamere Buchanan, a middle-distance specialist, was runner-up in 12:34. "Marathon Jack" McDermott of the Gulf Winds Track Club was the fastest master runner with a 14:13 clocking. Chandelic Jackson, an incoming freshman at FAMU, won the women's division in 15:08. Shanay Mayes, another incoming freshman at FAMU, placed second in the women's division with a 15:58.

In the ROTC unit team division, FAMU Navy ROTC won for the ROTC Challenge Cup for the second straight year, defeating the runners-up from FAMU Army ROTC and the third-place team from FSU Air Force ROTC.

The locked gate on the course is not one of those mistakes that runners easily forget. But there are lots of road races with accurate courses, and not nearly as many that are followed by wine tastings, samples of more varieties of muscadines than most people suspect the existence, and a performance by FAMU's "Marching 100" band. And maybe next year someone will remember to unlock the gate.

A Mile for Breakfast

Trevor Touchton, a fifteen-year-old Lincoln High School sophomore, ran 4:33.30 to win the 13th annual "Breakfast On The Track" one-mile run. Touchton led most of the race, which was held at Tallahassee's Maclay School track on Saturday morning, 21 August 2010. Maclay School's Stefanie Kurgatt (another fifteen-year-old sophomore) won the women's division in a record time for the event of 5:00.97. Michael Martinez edged out Jay Wallace for the top master runner spot, 4:55.38 to 4:56.38. Sarah Docter-Williams, the former women's record holder, was the top woman master with a 5:34.81.

The race was run in eight sections seeded by projected finish times with the fastest sections run first. In section one, Touchton moved to the front early, shadowed by Florida State alum Kevin Cook and the defending Breakfast-On-The-Track champion Patrick Swain. Charlie Johnson trailed the group, but made his move with Touchton on the final lap, placing second in 4:37.96. Cook and Swain were left behind to fight over third with Cook prevailing 4:39.16 to 4:39.57. Touchton's most recent previous performance was a third-place showing at last week's Trojan Pride 5K.

The women's division was also decided in the first section, with Kurgatt running steadily away from women's runner-up Amy Hines (16th, 5:15.96) and third-place woman Micah Adriani (29th, 5:31.68). For the masters, Michael Martinez ran the first section as a stalking horse, moving up through the field to challenge Jay Wallace late in the race, ultimately taking eighth place and the masters' title. The women's master honors, though, were determined in the second section. Sarah Docter-Williams was the only master woman in the section, but no one in the later sections could touch her 5:34.81.

The Breakfast On The Track is a Gulf Winds Track Club event and raises money for Maclay School athletics. 191 runners ran the mile this year. The name of the event derives from the pancakes served to the runners after the race--a traditional meal which seems traditionally popular in spite of the traditional August heat and humidity. In deference to the latter, the awards ceremony for the Breakfast On The Track is head in and around the Maclay School swimming pool. There's even a lifeguard on duty, just in case someone didn't wait 40 minutes after eating their pancakes to take the water and gets cramps.

Wayne Angel to head men's track and cross-country at FAMU

Florida A & M University president James Ammons hopes to announce on Friday that Wayne Angel has been hired as the Rattlers' men's track & field and cross-country head coach. Angel brings almost two decades of coaching experience to the job, having filled posts at Pike High School in Indianapolis, the University of Tennessee-Martin, Wichita State, Iowa, and the University of Illinois. Illinois was Angel's most recent position. An Illini alumnus, Angel was the men's track & field head coach at his alma mater for six seasons before his resignation in November, 2009. In the Big Ten Conference outdoor track & field championships during Angel's tenure, the Illini placed fifth (2004), fourth (2005), fifth (2006), sixth (2007), ninth (2008), and ninth (2009). In indoor track Angel's teams were fourth (2004), third (2005), third (2006), tenth (2007), seventh (2008), and seventh (2009).

Wayne Angel started his athletic career at Rantoul (Illinois) Township High School (c/o 1971), where his distinguished career earned him induction into the RTHS Hall of Fame in 1985. From there it was a short drive to Parkland College in Champaign, Illinois, where Angel was a two-time NJCAA All-American in track & field, also competing as a cross-country runner and a wrestler from 1971-1973. Parkland inducted Angel into its athletic hall of fame in 2009. Angel concluded his collegiate career at the University of Illinois from 1981-1982, setting a school record of 50.56 in the 400m hurdles and graduating with a degree in physical education. He also served in the military, becoming an Army Airborne Ranger and a Distinguished Honor Graduate of the Army's Air Assault School. Angel continued his athletic career in the military, setting an armed forces record of 49.93 in the 400m hurdles, winning three gold medals in the World Military Games, and competing in two U.S. Olympic Trials (1980 and 1984).

Wayne Angel and Tammy Angel have four children, Danielle, Wayne, Geoffrey, and Raven.
