Memorial Day three-peat for Rice in Valdosta

One day someone other than Chris Rice will win Valdosta's Memorial Day 5K. That day has not yet arrived, though. On Saturday, 30 May 2011, Valdosta's third annual Memorial Day 5K was marked by Rice successfully defending his 2010 title and winning the race for the third straight time, running 17:10.

Maybe next year.

Valdosta's Masked Avenger finished runner-up in 17:52, while Cairo's Stephen Robbins took third in 18:28. The fastest master runner in the race was Lynn Burnett of Livingston, Tennessee; Burnett placed eighth overall in 20:57.

Valdosta's own Alice Smoot was the first woman as well as the first woman master, finishing ninth overall in 21:06. 14th overall in 21:53, Dr. Gretchen Bielmyer was the women's runner-up behind Smoot once again.

102 athletes finished the race, up from last year's field of 79 finishers.

Linton and O'Neill fleet in the streets of Bainbridge

Under the lengthening shadows of a Bainbridge, Georgia evening, Stanley Linton ran 17:06 to win the fifth annual Memorial Day 5K Night Race on Monday, 30 May 2011. The Wakulla High School distance runner finished over 150 meters ahead of his nearest rival, Stephen Robbins of Cairo, Georgia. Robbins posted a 17:41 for the 3.1-mile course. Greg Waddell was the fastest master in the race, placing seventh overall in 19:17. Paula O'Neill was the first woman as well as the first woman master, crossing the line twelfth overall in 22:02. For the second year in a row, Cora Atkinson was the female runner-up; Atkinson was sixteenth overall in 22:38.

The men's race was dominated by youth, with high school runners taking the top three places: Linton of Wakulla High, Robbins of Brookwood School, and Dewey Reynolds of Bainbridge High. Only half of the top ten were old enough to vote. Linton grabbed the lead in the first mile and held on till the finish. Robbins trailed Reynolds in the early stages of the race, but eventually took over the second position. Left behind, Reynolds held off a late charge by Jasen Fulghum to hang on to third, 18:28 to 18:31.

Tallahassee's Paula O'Neill was not an early leader in the women's competition. 700 meters into the race she was still in fourth place, challenging Lilly Rockwell for third, while Cora Atkinson hung back in fifth. But the race was 5,000 meters long, and the fast starters faded out of contention. O'Neill moved past Rockwell into the lead, then Atkinson passed Rockwell to move into second. O'Neill (22:02) and Atkinson (22:38) grabbed the first two spots, and Rockwell (23:04) the third. Sarah Dugas finished fourth, only a hairbreadth ahead of a surging Julie Harris; both runners were clocked in 23:37.

84 athletes finished the race, a fund-raiser for Bainbridge High School cross country. The event was under new direction this year after four years with Mandi O'Mara at the helm.

Dobson and Cheruiyot lead GWTC to team title repeat at Gate-to-Gate

Led by the race-winning performance of Matt Dobson, the Gulf Winds Track Club beat out Northwest Florida Track Club for team honors at the Gate-to-Gate 4.4-mile road race. It was the second straight year that GWTC took home the team title. The 26th annual event was held on Eglin Air Force Base on Memorial Day morning, 30 May 2011. Gulf Winds' team total of 1:39:50 was over fourteen minutes better than Northwest Florida's 1:53:53.

The four-runner teams must include at least one woman, and Pasca Cheruiyot's performance was key in GWTC's success. An alumna of Coach Karen Harvey's Florida State University distance-running program, Cheruiyot was the fastest woman in the race, placing fifth overall in 25:18. Dobson of Jay, Florida was the fastest man and the fastest master in the race at 24:21, while Vince Molosky (3rd, 24:36) and John Robida (8th, 25:35) made up the rest of the GWTC squad. The first Northwest Florida TC runners was still out on the course when the fourth GWTC scorer crossed the finish line.

A Gulf Winds Track Club team of master runners--Mike Martinez (10th, 26:09), Tim Unger (16th, 27:12), Brian Corbin (22nd, 27:47), and Judy Alexander (136th, 33:49)--took third place with a cumulative time of 1:54:57. Eight teams competed in the open division, and 1382 runners finished the 26th annual edition of the Memorial Day classic.

Guillen and Zeiler KO their competition in the Fight For Air 5K

On 28 May 2011 Tony Guillen led a field of nearly 300 athletes on a five-kilometer tour of the streets of Tallahassee's Centerville Conservation Community, winning the American Lung Association's "Fight For Air" 5K with a time of 18:10. Guillen was the fastest master as well as the first overall finisher in the race. Immediately behind him Lindsay Zeiler, a volunteer assistant for the Florida State University track team, was the second overall finisher and the top woman in the race. Zeiler ran 18:49, making her a perfect three-for-three on the Tallahassee roads. Her previous women's titles in the Capital City came earlier this spring in April's Palace Saloon 5K and May's Tulip Trot 5K. At third overall in 19:20, Ryan Dotson was the men's runner-up, while Karen Geltko posted a 19:52 to finish fourth overall as the women's runner-up.

The Centerville Conservation Community is a still mostly empty sub-division north of Pisgah Church Road between Bradfordville Road and Centerville Road. The community is the home of the Centerville Trail. Centerville itself is a historic community with a vague location. At least as old as Tallahassee, Centerville was significant enough at one time to lend its name to Centerville Road, but you can drive the length of Leon County Road 151 and it will quietly change from Centerville Road to Moccasin Gap Road without you ever spotting a trace of Centerville (and never mind Moccasin Gap). I read once that after the end of the Rebellion in 1865, United States troops in the area were stationed in Centerville--but there was still no clue as to where exactly that was. Maps label the intersection of Pisgah Church Road and Bradfordville Road as Centerville, but that's over a mile from Pisgah Church, the one structure in the area that clearly belongs to historic Centerville. If there ever was such a village, it disappeared with the cotton fields that surrounded it, leaving behind only a name.

For some, Marion trumps Boston in 2011

On Saturday morning, 28 May 2011, the collegiate national champion will be crowned. In the marathon.

Don't look for athletes from Florida State or the University of Florida at Gainesville to be competing for this title. Those schools are members of the NCAA, and the NCAA has never seen fit to include the marathon in their athletic championships. But the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, the NAIA, has included the men's marathon in their annual track and field championship meet since 1972. When the NAIA added women's track and field in 1981, the marathon was on the ladies' schedule of events--three years before the Olympic finally added the women's marathon to its program in 1984. So you won't see athletes from FSU or Florida in the marathon championship in Marion, Indiana, but you might see three runners from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University--Flo Vazquez, Alex Frazier, and Russell Snyder are all entered in the race.

Collegians have always run the marathon whether or not there was collegiate competition in the event. 1957 Boston Marathon champion John J. Kelley ran his first two Boston Marathons while attending Boston University. The World University Games included a men's marathon from 1981 to 1995 and a women's marathon from 1983 to 1995 (after which the distance was reduced to a half marathon).

It's probably the most exclusive annual marathon in the United States. Qualifying for the Olympic Trials is tougher, but that only comes around every four years. Men have to run a 2:44:00 or better, women a 3:34:00. A "B" standard of 2:50:00 for men and 3:36:00 for women might get you into the race, but doesn't guarantee entry. Alternatively, men can run a 1:14:00 half marathon (1:16:40 "B") and women a 1:33:00 (1:36:00 "B") to qualify. Most of this year's men and all of this year's women qualified with a half marathon time. Not just anyone can meet the standards and compete. You have to be a student at one of the 290 schools that belong to the NAIA. The school has to have a track team. You have to be eligible to compete under the rules. You have to be crazy enough to run a marathon in Marion, Indiana at the end of May.

And your coach has to be crazy enough to let you run. An athlete doesn't get any more points for winning the marathon than for any other event. A coach has to be looking at the numbers. Could an athlete score more points for the team running both the 5,000 meters and the 10,000 meters than he could in the marathon? It's the same calculation that goes on when deciding what to do with a decathlete.

After all the qualifying and calculating, 74 men and 62 women are entered in the 2011 NAIA championship marathon. It won't be a large field on the starting line at 6:00am in front of Burns Science Hall on the Indiana Wesleyan University campus. But whoever wins will be the national marathon champion. In my book, that beats both the BCS and a playoff system. Hail to the victor!

Molosky and Gutierrez break records at Wakulla Springs

The last time Vince Molosky was racing at Wakulla Springs State Park it was a 50-mile race on the pavement last December. On Saturday, 21 May 2011, Molosky was racing in Wakulla Spring again, but this time it was a mere 5K on unpaved roads and trails through the sanctuary of the park--the fifth annual Friends Of Wakulla Springs 5K Trail Run. Molosky edged out runner-up Stephen Cox 16:59 to 17:06 to set a new event record and win the race. It was Molosky's third straight local win, a winning streak that had started with the Tails and Trail 10K on April 30 and continued with the Tulip Trot 5K on May 14. Dan Clark of Alachua, Florida was another 40 meters back in 17:15, and Tallahassee's Jay Wallace was fourth overall and the first master in 17:31. 2010 champion Justin Dickieson was fifth in 17:41.

Unike Molosky, Seeley Gutierrez didn't bring a winning streak to the 2011 Wakulla Springs 5K, nor had she recently run an ultra-marathon in the park, but she nevertheless won the women's division, setting a new women's event record of 19:29. Gutierrez was the first woman to ever go under 20:00 at the Friends Of Wakulla Springs race, but she wasn't the last. The next three women--Katie Showman (21st, 19:42), Kelly Stevens (22nd, 19:46), and Summer Calder (28th, 19:59)--all broke 20:00. In a tight race for the top woman master spot, Mary Vancore, the seventh woman in, edged out the eighth woman in, Paula O'Neil, for the title, 22:20 to 22:24.

Held annually, the Friends Of Wakulla Springs 5K is the only time each year that people are allowed to run in the sanctuary area of Wakulla Springs State Park, which is not open to the general public. 326 finishers of the 5K took advantage of the opportunity this year, plus another 48 runners in an earlier one-mile fun run. Proceeds from the races are used by the Friends Of Wakulla Springs to protect and enhance Wakulla Springs State Park.

Manry and Thomas are the first Steve Ellis 5K champions

Brian Manry led 119 runners on a five-kilometer circuit of Florida State University's main campus in Tallahassee on 21 May 2011, winning the inaugural Steve Ellis Memorial 5K. Manry posted a 17:34 for the course, finishing nearly 200 meters ahead of runner-up Stephen Robbins of Cairo. In third place overall, Tallahassee's Mickey Moore was the fastest master runner in the race. Chiles High School distance runner Carly Thomas, the 2009 FHSAA state cross-country champion, won the women's division, placing eighth overall in 20:11 and finishing over 600 meters ahead of the next woman, Lena Shields (22nd, 24:13). Fran McLean was the third woman in and the first woman master, running 24:48.

Manry lost no time in taking the lead, and was well in command by the end of the first kilometer. Behind him, Stephen Robbins and Mickey Moore were renewing their duel from two weeks earlier at the Marzuq 5K, closely trailed by Andrew Smyth. After two kilometers Manry was only farther ahead, while Robbins had opened up a 30-meter lead on Moore. Another 60 meters back, Florida State alumnus Hugh Bosely of San Francisco had moved past Smyth into fourth. With less than a kilometer to go and only a loop around Campbell Stadium left to run, the race was still Manry's. Robbins had broken contact with Moore, while Moore was now only 40 meters ahead of Bosely. After circling the stadium the top four didn't change--Manry was first in 17:34; Robbins clung to second in 18:23; Moore held off Bosely 18:54 to 19:07 to hang on to third place and the top master spot.

Manry led nearly the entire race, and Carly Thomas led the women nearly the entire race. Leaving the rest of the female field behind her, the rising senior at Chiles High moved up through the field, breaking into the top ten at halfway and ultimately finishing eighth. Runner-up Lena Shields never challenged Thomas, while Shields was comfortably ahead of the third woman in, top woman master Fran McLean. McLean couldn't rest easy in third, though, as Ruthie McCormick was just a few steps back on the final straightaway. But McLean held off McCormick on the way to the finish chute, 24:48 to 24:51.

The namesake of the race, Steve Ellis, covered Florida State University sports for the Tallahassee Democrat for nearly two decades until his untimely death in late 2009. A memorial race seemed fitting in Ellis' case; he had been a cross-country runner at Clemson University and Winter Park High School. The race venue was also appropriate to Ellis' memory, starting and finishing between Dick Howser Baseball Stadium and Doak Campbell Football Stadium, and running past many of the important sports facilities on the FSU main campus. The course also included a climb up Gallows Hill on Copeland Street, which may or may not have been appropriate but was certainly memorable. Proceeds from the race benefit the Steve Ellis Memorial Scholarship fund of the FSU College of Communications.
