Nadler and Suda first in Florida Track Club's Frank Shorter Mile

The great Frank Shorter is perhaps best known for his two Olympic gold medals in the men's marathon, a gold from the 1972 games and a silver from 1976. Shorter, a one-time member of the Florida Track Club, isn't nearly as notorious as a miler, but his career best of 4:02.6, while not Olympic-calibre, is certainly nothing to sneeze at. So on Friday, 1 January 2016, the Florida Track Club opened the new year with the inaugural Frank Shorter Road Mile, run on the streets of Gainesville, Florida's north side. The club scheduled a very civilized noontime start for the race.


Aspiring marathoner Enoch Nadler won the first year event event, running 4:40. It wasn't close to Nadler's mile PR of 4:08, but it was fast enough to put the former UF Gator distance runner across the finish line ahead of runner-up Mike Hensley of the Florida Track Club. Hensley ran 4:43. Just behind him, Gainesville's Bobby Hensley dueled Roy Spradlin of Cooper City for third, with Hensley getting the nod 4:48 to 4:50.


In another close-fought battle, Dan Monteau took the top master spot over Rob Robins, both runners clocked in 5:23, taking seventh and eighth place overall. The third master in the race, Dan Stoner, was just a few steps back in 5:25, coming in ninth overall.


There were no close finishes at the top of the women's standings. Betsy Suda ran 5:30 to take the women's title, placing tenth overall and finishing 150 meters ahead of the next female athlete. Mandy Harrell was the women's runner-up, sixteenth overall in 6:04. Kelly Shaer was third in the women's standings, 21st overall in 6:23. Elisabeth Diamond of Bell, Florida, was the top woman master and eighth female finisher, 33rd overall in 7:27.


55 athletes finished the race. Timing was provided by Start 2 Finish Race Management.
