Butzin and Smoot rule at the Smoothie King 5K

2015 Smoothie King 5KOn 12 March 2016, just seven days after posting a win in the Adel Kiwanis 5K, Dan Butzin was back in the streets, racing. This Saturday morning, he was competing in Valdosta, Georgia's 16th annual Smoothie King 5K, defending his 2015 title in the race. The defense was successful. Butzin was first in a field of 52, running the 3.1-mile course in 19:15. Valdosta, Georgia master runner Alice Smoot was the women's champion, placing fourth overall in 22:07. It was also Smoot's second title in the event; she was the first woman in the 2011 race.


Quin McGlamery, a sophomore on the Valdosta High cross country team, finished runner-up in 19:38. David Monds of Quitman, Georgia was the fastest master runner in the Smoothie King race, placing third overall in 21:37.


Hahira, Georgia athlete Sierra Nazario was second in the women's standings, coming in eighth overall in 24:15. Sarah Blake of Valdosta edged Lake Park's Eryn Guilmette 27:54 to 27:55 for the third women's spot. Blake and Guilmette finished 14th and 15th overall.


Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority hosts the Smoothie King 5K. Up till 2014, the race was known as the Azalea Festival 5K. Timing and finish line services for the event were provided by A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia.
