Baptist Campus Ministries of Valdosta State University brought their annual Run For Mission Four-Mile to the streets of Valdosta, Georgia for the seventh time on Saturday morning, 20 January 2018. Alec Munger led the field of 93 finishers, winning the race by more than 130 meters in 24:35. Alice Smoot was the first woman in the race, placing eleventh overall in 28:46.Alec Munger, the race winner, is a frosh at Lowndes High in Valdosta, where he races for the school's cross-country team. Taylor Doss of Valdosta placed second behind Munger in 25:06. The next two places belonged to seniors on the Lowndes High cross-country squad--David Shrier was third in 25:28 and Brishen House was fourth in 24:45. Rick Mazurkiewicz was the fastest master runner in the four mile, placing fifth overall in 26:02. Mazurkiewicz had been the overall winner of the fifth annual Run For Missions in 2016.
For Alice Smoot it was the second women's title in the race; the Valdosta master runner had also logged a win at the inaugural Run For Missions in 2012. Sixteen-year-old Emma Campbell of Hahira, Georgia was second in the women's standings and 21st overall in 31:51. Campbell was coming off a 24:58 5K performance seven days earlier in Jacksonville, Florida's Best Damn Race. A few steps behind Campbell, Tifton, Georgia master runner Penny Peters was the third woman and 24th overall in 31:54. Another Tifton master runner, Gina Purvis, was the fourth woman and 27th overall in 33:11.
A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia timed the 2018 Run For Missions Four Mile and provided finish-line services.
