In spring of 2023, Caden Vandermeulen was studying at the Panama City campus of Florida State University. However, on April 16 of that year, Vamdermeulen was on the Tallahassee campus of FSU. He was racing the third annual Garnet And Gold Four Miler, and Vandermeulen won by close to 200 meters, running 24:14. The women's champ was Indian Harbour Beach, Florida athlete Gabriela Bernard, whose studies were in the eighth grade of Delaura Middle School. Thirteen-year-old Bernard was seventh overall in 27:34.Tallahassee master runner Ryan Kunz took second overall with a 25:03. The previous day, Kunz had turned 19:00 for 5K at the Palace Saloon Road Race in the same part of town. Christian Mahoney, formerly a member of TERRA Environmental Research Institute's cross-country team, was third overall in 25:09.
The women's runner-up was Peyton Hurley, an alum of the cross-country team at Winter Park's Trinity Prep. Hurley placed 22nd overall in 30:34. Elizabeth Dodd of Blackshear, Georgia was the first woman master and third female finisher, 26th overall in 31:06.
The Garnet And Gold Four Miler followed a winding course around the University campus, finishing on the 50-yard line of Bobby Bowden Field in Campbell Stadium, the FSU football team's home venue. Post-race festivities were held just outside the stadium on Langford Green. 354 athletes finished the race, which was timed by Race Day Professionals of Weston, Florida.
