Following a 7:45 am one-mile fun run, the 10K started about as close to the scheduled 8:10 am time as you can get without consulting the United State Naval Observatory Master Clock. At the sound of the starting siren close to 2,000 runners--those in the 10K as well as the field of the 5K--charged north on Monroe Street from the Leon County Courthouse. Lake was soon leading. After two kilometers, as the race headed up Lafayette Street, it looked uncannily like the 2010 Springtime, with Lake already far out in front of his pursuers. Leading that pursuit was Vince Molosky and Kevin Sullivan. After three kilometers Molosky fell off the pace, leaving Sullivan to chase Lake on his own. But Sullivan was closing. At the halfway point, as they ran along Capital City Country Club, less than five seconds separated Lake and Sullivan. With Sullivan's background as a world-class 1,500-meter runner, he had to be considered dangerous if the race was still that close near the end.
It wasn't. Lake started to pull away again, stretching out his lead but never quite escaping Sullivan's sight. At the Suwanee Street finish line it was Lake over Sullivan, 32:34 to 32:45. Lake's time was over half a minute faster than his 2010 winning time of 33:09, and the fastest run at Springtime since Joey Zins ran 31:59 in 2009. Behind Lake and Sullivan Nate Kaiser moved up to take third in 32:45. Charlie Johnson was fourth in 34:17 after overtaking a fading Molosky, who ended up fifth in 34:29.
While Lake was repeating as Springtime champion, the women's race was not so kind to its defending champion. 2010 title-holder Sheryl Rosen was left farther and farther behind as Pasca Cheruiyot ran away with the race. A NCAA All-American while running for Florida State University, Cheruiyot's closest competitor was her former coach at FSU, Karen Harvey. Not that it was close--Cheruiyot crossed the finish line over 600 meters ahead of Harvey, 34:52 to 37:33. Third place seemed up for grabs, though, with Sheryl Rosen and triathletes Seeley Gutierrez and Shannon Coates battling for that spot. The three traded positions throughout the race, but at the end it was the runner prevailing over the triathletes, with Rosen taking third in 39:03, Coates fourth in 39:08, and Gutierrez fifth in 39:16.
Jack McDermott was the fastest master runner in the race, finishing eleventh overall in 36:39. After finishing runner-up among women masters in the 2010 Springtime 10K, Mary Anne Grayson of Thomasville came back in 2011 to claim the top spot in that division, placing 65th overall in 42:00.
