That had certainly been his own experience. Linton had won the Tallahassee, Florida race in 2013 and 2017, running 15:46 and 15:16. Two members of the coaching staff of Florida State University's track team, David Barney and Ricardo Estremera, added their own support to Linton's position on Saturday morning, 13 April 2019. Barney and Estremera finished first and second in Gulf Winds Track Club's 45th annual Palace Saloon 5K, both clocked in 14:39. Ann Centner, a Ph.D. student in nutrition at Florida State, was the first woman in the race, placing 15th overall in 17:38.
David Barney and Ricardo Estremera |
With a few exceptions over the last 45 years, the Palace Saloon 5K has been run from Messer Park to the Palace Saloon. Some athletes park at the Palace to have their vehicle convenient to the finish, others park at Messer to have their vehicle convenient to the start. At 7:30 AM on the morning of the race, you could see dozens in the park-near-the-finish camp walking or jogging west on Jackson Bluff Road toward the starting line.
Racing commenced just after 8:00 AM. By the end of the first half mile, a lead group of four had emerged--David Barney, Stan Linton, Ricardo Estremera, and Andrew Smith. The four passed the first mile of the 3.1-mile race together. After that, Barney and Estremera started pushing the pace. Smith fell back first, then Linton.
The leaders after the first mile |
"We went through the first mile in 4:48," said Linton. "Right around a mile and a half I lost contact."
Linton also hit the second mile in 4:48, but Barney and Estremera were going much faster. By the two-mile mark, they had Jackson Bluff Road to themselves.
"We were competing," said Barney. "But when we saw we were ahead we just ran in together. The timing chip gave it to me."
Stan Linton |
The chip also clocked them in 14:39--the fastest time run at the Palace Saloon 5K since 1986, when Paul Waldron won the race in 14:36. Less than half a minute later, Stan Linton crossed the finish line in 15:05, matching his personal best road 5K time. Andrew Smith took fourth in 15:36, sixteen seconds faster than he had run at the 2018 Palace. Bainbridge, Georgia athlete Poncherella Leonard was fifth in 16:19.
Barney has done quite a few 5000 meter runs, but not many on the roads in recent years. On the track, his personal best is 14:12.91. Two weeks before the Palace, he ran 14:22.34 at the Florida Relays in Gainesville. He plans to be back on the track in Gainesville soon.
Andrew Smith |
"In two weeks I'll run the 1500 at the Tom Jones Memorial Meet," said Barney.
"I'll run the 1500, too, unless they invite someone fast for the steeple," said Estremera.
In addition to racing together, Barney and Estremera work together--Barney as a graduate student assistant coach and Estremera as a volunteer coach. And that's not the end of their association.
"We train together under Terry Long," said Barney.
Ann Centner |
Barney is working toward a Ph.D. in exercise physiology at Florida State. Likewise, Ann Centner, the Palace women's champ, is in her first semester of Ph.D. study in nutrition at FSU. Centner finished nearly a minute ahead of the next finisher in the women's field at the Palace, so you could hardly say that she was pushed by the competition. Nevertheless, her winning time of 17:38 is her personal best for 5K on the road, bettering her previous mark of 17:40--run on a precipitously downhill course in Macon, Georgia. Centner made good use of the downhill finish at the Palace as well.
"I'm a pretty good downhill runner," said Centner. "I don't have any problem with it. It doesn't hurt my knees, which bothers some people."
Renee Cox |
Second place in the women's division was a race between a University of West Florida graduate student and a Tallahassee lawyer, Renee Cox and Sheryl Rosen. Argonaut Cox got the nod at the finish line, running 18:37. Rosen, the 2013 Palace women's champ, went 18:40. Amanda Sava, a Florida State grad student, ran a personal best 19:39 for fourth in the women's standings. At 19:49, Tallahassee Community College cross-country runner Genevieve Printiss was the fifth woman.
"The first plan today was just to win," explained Centner, who had finished runner-up in the 2018 Palace. "You never know who's going to show up, although I knew that Renee and Sheryl would be racing. I was pretty confident I could break 18:00, so then I was seeing how close I could get to 17:30."
Sheryl Rosen |
By 10:00 AM the awards had been handed out, the post-race beverages had stopped flowing, and the athletes were leaving. You could see dozens in the park-near-the-start camp walking or jogging west on Jackson Bluff Road, returning to their vehicles. Many planned to be back in 2020 on the second Saturday in April for the 46th annual Palace Saloon 5K.
864 athletes finished the 2019 Palace Saloon 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.
