Stan Linton trots 47:44 for 15K at the Tallahassee Turkey Trot

“I knew it was tough,” said Stan Linton. “But not how tough.”

United States Navy Ensign Linton was talking about the course of Gulf Winds Track Club’s annual Tallahassee Turkey Trot 15K, run through Southwood on Thanksgiving morning, 24 November 2016. He may have found the course challenging, but Linton was equal to the challenge. Finishing more than a mile ahead of the next runner, Linton won the 9.3-mile race in 47:44, the fastest winning time at the Turkey Trot since 1989. Sheryl Rosen won the women’s title for the seventh time in the last eleven years, placing fifteenth overall in 59:42.

It was Tallahassee’s biggest Turkey Trot yet, with more than 6,000 athletes finishing one of the four races--a mile, a 5K, a 10K, and the headline 15K race. The three longer races were scheduled for a common start at 8:30 AM, but the logistics of getting that many competitors into Southwood proved overwhelming, and the start had to be delayed. After a fifteen minute wait, the races were under way.

Although Linton led the 15K the whole way, he initially trailed the leaders of the 10K and the 5K. That didn’t last. By two miles he had left even the fastest 5K runner behind, and a mile later he was also ahead of everyone in the 10K. After that Linton had the road to himself on his way to a 47:44 win. Chris O’Kelley was second in 54:46. Gary Droze was the fastest master runner in the race and third overall in 55:51.

Sheryl Rosen

Things were more competitive on the women’s side. From the start and for most of the race, Sheryl Rosen trailed Allison Eagen. The two knew each other, and not just because they were both former women’s champs of the Turkey Trot.

“Allison and I have been training together,” explained Rosen.

Eagen was more than a hundred meters ahead of Rosen at one point, but Rosen closed the gap late in the race.

“I caught her on the trail by the lake,” said Rosen. “Just short of the eight-mile mark.

Rosen went on to finish as the first woman, running 59:42. Eagen was second in the women’s standings, seventeenth overall in 1:00:49. Kristin Sweeney was the third female finisher and twentieth overall in 1:01:44.

DeVeau and Cox bring honors from Eglin to Tallahassee at Gate to Gate

Zach DeVeau, Renee CoxZach DeVeau and Renee Cox made it a Tallahassee sweep of the overall titles for men and women at the 30th annual Gate-to-Gate 4.4-Mile Run on Eglin Air Force Base on Saturday morning, 23 May 2015. DeVeau covered the course in 25:03, the fastest time of the day, while Cox ran 29:34 to place 17th overall. 792 athletes finished the 4.4-mile race.

Coming in second overall behind DeVeau was Choctawhatchee High graduating senior Sean White, running 25:21. A month earlier White had wrapped up his high school distance running career with a 4:17.37 1600-meter run at the FHSAA 3A Region 1 Track and Field Championships. Gate-to-Gate proves that he has already moved on to post-prep racing. Florida A & M University professor Geb Kiros was third overall in 25:34; Kiros was the fastest master runner in the race. The second fastest master runner was Tallahassee's Michael Martinez, fourth overall in 26:15.

On the women's side, Cox dueled with Florida State freshman distance runner Sara Steele. Cox had finished runner-up in the women's standings at the 2014 Gate-to-Gate, but not this year. Cox took the crown in 29:34 while Steele was the second woman in, placing 18th overall in 29:45. Third in the women's division went to Amber Carpenter of Fort Walton Beach, 20th overall in 30:07. Niceville High graduating senior Nicole Escoffier took the fourth women's spot, placing 21st overall in 30:20. Deerlake Middle School cross country runner Emily Molen was fifth in the women's standings, 28th overall in 31:15. 42nd overall in 32:41, Paula Piazza of Fort Walton Beach was the first woman master and tenth female finisher.

Memorial Day Gate-To-Gate RunThe Gate-to-Gate Run started off as exactly that, a run from one gate of Eglin Air Force Base to another. It wasn't 5K, it wasn't 10K, it was 4.4-miles because that was the distance between the two gates. Since then, the course that actually went from one gate to another was abandoned in favor of a loop course, although the original 4.4-mile distance was retained. People may have missed the old course, but few complained about missing out on the pre-race bus ride from the finish line to the starting line. In 2015, Gate-to-Gate tradition was tampered with further by the addition of a two-loop, 8.8-mile race. On the original course, this would have been Gate-to-Gate-to-Gate. I'm not sure why a Gate-to-Gate-to-Gate-to-Gate race wasn't considered. That would have been 13.2 miles, or very close to a half marathon.

229 people ran the new race, though, and the fastest of those was Zachery Brian of Shalimar, Florida. Running 53:18, Bryan finished close to a quarter-mile ahead of the runner-up, Eglin's Ben Eells. Eells posted a 54:50 for the 8.8 miles. Loxley, Alabama, athlete Kenny Pfeiffer edged Jon Bowie of Mobile, Alabama, for third in the longer race, 56:03 to 56:04. Bowie was the top master in the race.

Double the winning women's time in the 4.4 mile, and it still wouldn't be as fast as Katie Sherron's time in the 8.8 mile. The Florida State University professor won the women's title with a 57:44 for the odd distance, placing seventh overall. Michelle Williams of Milton, Florida, was the second woman finisher and the top woman master, coming in 18th overall in 64:04.

Can't stop Cox at the "Stop the Violence" 5K

Renee Cox5 October 2014 was the first Sunday in October, and just like 2013 the first Sunday in October was the date that Refuge House brought the "Stop The Violence" 5K to Tallahassee's Southwood neighborhood. Renee Cox won the second annual race, covering the 3.1-mile course in 20:39. Cox was one of nine women to place in the top ten overall; the only man to break into the top ten was Tallahassee master runner Bill McGuire. McGuire finished runner-up in 21:17. Fran McLean was the first woman master, coming in sixth overall in 25:38.

The 2014 "Stop The Violence" 5K occupied the same spot on the calendar and the same neighborhood as the previous year, but the course had changed. Moving from the Town Center, the new route started and finished on Grove Park Drive near the Southwood Golf Club. A few hundred meters into the race, when the runners turned off of Grove Park and onto Mulberry Park Boulevard, Renee Cox was already in the lead, with Hope Hoffman in second. Bill McGuire overtook Hoffman before the end of the first kilometer on Four Oaks Boulevard, but Cox was already nearly half a minute ahead and continuing to pull away. Cox's biggest worry at that point was being able to follow the course.

"I'm not used to being the very first runner," Cox said. "My vision is pretty bad and I couldn't really see the arrows. I was kind of hoping I'd have someone to chase."

Cox stayed on course, though, and it was up to the other runners to do the chasing. She was first back to the Golf Club, winning the race in 20:39--a new record for the event. McGuire was second in 21:17, and Hoffman took third in 24:32.

Clift and Cox catch wins at the Fishnet 5K

Bill CliftRacing up hill and down around the Tallahassee campus of Florida State University, Bill Clift won the Tallahassee Rollergirls' second annual Fishnet 5K on Saturday morning, 30 August 2014. Clift covered the 3.1-mile course in 16:46, finishing just ahead of fellow Capital City Runners athlete Roger Schmidt. Schmidt finished runner-up in 17:01. Michael Martinez took top master honors in the race, placing fifth overall in 18:46. Tallahassee's Renee Cox successfully defended her 2013 Fishnet 5K women's title taking the first female's spot in 20:55, fast enough for ninth overall. Tallahassee's Paula O'Neill was the women's runner-up and top woman master, finishing 16th overall in 22:59. Nearly 150 athletes completed the race.

"I went out pretty hard," Clift recalled after the race.

He did indeed, charging to the front of the field almost immediately after the start. Crossing Landis Green, as the runners came up on 800 meters, Clift was the clear leader, with Jeff Hoh a few steps back in second. Clift was still leading when the runners hit the 1600-meter mark, near the crest of Gallows Hill, but Hoh had fallen back and Roger Schmidt had taken over the second position. Brian Manry had moved up to third, so Capital City Runners athletes held the top three places.

Renee CoxOver the remaining distance, Clift and Schmidt cruised away from the rest of the field, taking the first two places for Capital City Runners in 16:46 and 17:01. During the second half of the race Paul Guyas overtook Brian Manry, taking third in 18:00 and breaking the Capital City Runners monopoly on the top places. Manry was fourth in 18:17, and Tallahassee master runner Michael Martinez fifth in 18:46. A fading Jeff Hoh was sixth in 19:29, but he was the first finisher wearing fishnet stockings.

As in the previous year's Fishnet 5K, Renee Cox was just the fastest woman in the race, finishing nearly half a kilometer ahead of the next female racer. 20:55 wasn't quite as fast as she had run in the 2013 Fishnet 5K, but Cox still led the women's field from the start and never had to look back. Behind Cox, Tallahassee master runner Paula O'Neill got an early grip on the second woman's spot. The third position, however, was in constant contention. Late in the race, though, Sara Niehaus darted ahead to take third in the women's standings, placing 23rd overall in 24:00.

Clift and Cox are first in the third annual 5K at Fifth

Bill CliftThe 5K at Fifth was a September race during its first two years, 2012 and 2013. This year though, the race switched to 14 June 2014. The earlier date didn’t seem unpopular; more athletes than ever showed up for the third annual edition of the 5K at Fifth. The date had to have been especially popular with Bill Clift, who won the race in 17:39. Other fans must have included top master Bill McNulty, two-time women’s winner Renee Cox, and the first woman master Paula O’Neill.

Bill Clift, Caleb CarmichaelThe race started just after 8:00 AM, heading east from Midtown on Ingleside Avenue. That first kilometer on Ingleside was a roller-coaster of small hills. That wasn’t a large roller coaster, though; just carnival sized. The full scale, theme park roller coaster came in the middle of the race, with a huge descent on Crestview Avenue to Winthrop Park and a climb back up again.

Caleb Carmichael, a Florida High alumnus and the head cross-country coach at the University of West Florida, led for most of the first half of the race. While Carmichael escaped the rest of the field, though, he couldn’t shake Bill Clift. Clift, formerly a distance runner at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, met whatever pace Carmichael set along Ingleside then down Crestview. After that, Clift took over.

2014 5K At Fifth“He separated down by Winthrop Park, then pushed before the uphill,” recalled Carmichael. “He didn’t make any more ground after that, but he was already ahead.”

Clift stayed ahead as he pushed for home, heading back east on Beard Street. He crossed the finish line on East Fifth Avenue with a winning time of 17:39. Carmichael was second in 18:04.

Duane Evans, Bill McNultyBill McNulty was the first master runner in the field, placing third in 19:48, just a fraction of a second ahead of Crawfordville master runner Duane Evans. McNulty and Evans had raced closely throughout the race, moving up through the field and shaking off an early challenge by master runner Mike Kreis. Sometimes Evans had been ahead of McNulty; sometimes McNulty had been ahead of Evans. At the Fifth Avenue finish line, though, McNulty was a step faster. Mike Kreis was fifth in 20:12.

Renee CoxRenee Cox, the 5K at Fifth women's champ in 2013, was on the starting line of the 2014 race. However, in the early going, it was Jillian Heddeaeus who was the pacesetter for the women's field. Heddaeus was actually third overall and running strong when the the runners turned off Ingleside to head down Crestview, a kilometer into the race. Cox was a good twenty meters back at that turn.

“I didn’t think I was going to get her,” said Cox.

Jillian HeddaeusCox did overtake Heddaeus, though, just before three kilometers. Shannon Colavecchio went by Heddaeus later in the race, but Colavecchio wasn’t going to catch Cox. Cox successfully defended her women’s title, coming in seventh overall in 20:21. Colavecchio was the women’s runner-up, twelfth overall in 21:07. Heddaeus was third in the women’s standings, finishing 15th overall in 21:29. Paula O’Neill was the fourth woman finisher and first woman master, placing 19th overall in 23:36.

Nearly 150 athletes finished the race, a benefit for Tallahassee Memorial Cancer Center and the Leon High School Volleyball team.

Bloomin' good runs in the Gardens for Molosky and Cox

Vince MoloskyAround 1923 Alfred B. Maclay and his wife Louise bought an old hunting plantation north of Tallahassee. They made the estate their winter home, naming it Killearn Gardens. Most of the original plantings in the gardens were winter bloomers, because the Maclays were back in New York or elsewhere the rest of the year.

Since then, Killearn Gardens has become one of Florida's state parks and a year-round destination for the area's runners. The Maclays were almost certainly gone from their winter retreat by Mothers Day each year, but since 2004 the Marzuq Shrine Temple has invited athletes to race in their annual Mothers Day 5K through Maclay Gardens State Park. This year was no exception, and on Saturday morning, 10 May 2014, more than one hundred assembled near the park's Lake Hall recreation area for the eleventh running of the 3.1-mile race.

Renee CoxVince Molosky had won the race in 2013, and almost immediately grabbed the lead this year. By the mile mark he was over half a minute ahead of the next runner, and at one point he enjoyed a lead of more than a minute. Eric Godin started to eat into that lead during the last half mile, but Molosky was too far ahead. Molosky won his second straight Mothers Day 5K title, running 17:13. Godin was second in 18:21, and Reikan Lin placed third in 19:37. Crawfordville master runner Duane Evans was fourth overall in 19:51.

Renee Cox took the women's title, coming in fifth overall in 20:40. Cox, the women's runner-up in 2013, led the women's field the entire way this year. Urska Dobersek was the second woman finisher, eighth overall in 22:08. Dylan Snowden was the third woman, 21st in 25:13. Right behind Snowden was the first woman master, Birgit Maier-Katkin, 22nd overall in 25:14.

As it traditional in the Marzuq Temple's Mothers Day 5K, each award winner in the race received a cake. No statistics are available on how many cakes survived to make it home to mom.

Veterans Day victories for Chris Rego and Renee Cox

Chris RegoWith another new course, the VetFest Veterans Day 5K returned to the streets of downtown Tallahassee on Monday morning, 11 November 2013. School of Arts and Sciences math teacher Chris Rego the third annual race, running a course record 15:57, and outrunning a field of 147 athletes. Maclay School coach Gary Droze was the fastest master runner in the field, placing third overall in 17:20. Renee Cox was the first woman across the finish line, coming in ninth overall in 20:01. The first master woman was Paula O'Neill, 18th overall in 22:16.

Gary Droze, Peter Kaus, Thomas ArnoldAfter an earlier one-mile fun run was wrapped up and the national anthem was performed, the 3.1-mile main event started as scheduled at 8:30 AM on East Park Avenue near Gadsden Street. Chris Rego immediately took the lead as the runners dashed downhill toward Franklin Avenue. The math teacher was even farther ahead 800 meters farther on, when the race began a climb into the Myers Park neighborhood. FSU student Thomas Arnold followed in second, with Peter Kaus a step behind. In fourth, Gary Droze trailed Arnold and Kaus.

Thomas ArnoldNo one was going to catch Chris Rego that morning, though. He increased his lead through Myers Park, on the descent from the neighborhood, and on the ascent of Capitol Hill on South Monroe Street. Behind him, Thomas Arnold dropped Peter Kaus to take charge of second. Gary Droze passed Kaus to move into third. By the time the runners returned to North Gadsden Street and the finish line, Rego was over 600 meters ahead, winning the race in 15:57. Arnold placed second in 17:11, with Droze third in 17:20. Kaus took fourth in 17:33.

Renee CoxOn the women's side Renee Cox also went right to the front immediately after the start. Going by Myers Park Cox already had a substantial lead over master runner Paula O'Neill, who was running second in the women's field. Cox continued to run strong, working her way up into the top ten overall and widening her margin over the other women. By the time Cox crossed the finish line in a women's event record of 20:01, she was almost half a kilometer ahead of the women's runner-up, Paula O'Neill. Another Tallahassee master runner, Julie Clark, was the third woman finisher, placing 28th overall in 24:02. Swift Creek Middle School cross-country runner Arianna Neely was fourth in the women's division, coming in 35th overall in 25:10.
