Chris O'Kelley and Kat Sack pay some swift respects at the Salute To Prefontaine

Once each year since 1976, Gulf Winds Track Club has brought the Salute To Prefontaine 5K to the Silver Lake Recreation Area of the Apalachicola National Forest, just west of Tallahassee, Florida. The course has changed more than a few times. One year the race was run in October instead of September. The faces of the athletes have changed as well, and on Saturday morning, 15 September 2018, at the 43rd annual Prefontaine there was a new face in front of the race. Chris O'Kelley won the race for the first time, covering the 3.1-mile cross-country course in 18:00. On the women's side, Kat Sack was a first-time winner as well, placing tenth overall in 21:34.

O'Kelley's 18:00 at Prefontaine was the fastest winning time at the race since 2014, when Chris Lake went 17:43. Trailing O'Kelley, Charlie Kline took second in 18:14. Ryan Truchelut, the running meteorologist, edged Brad Busboom for third, 19:21 to 19:26. In fifth place, Simon Hodgson of the Tallahassee Community College cross-country team was just a few steps behind Busboom at 19:29. Hodgson's coach, Gary Droze, was the first master runner in the race, placing sixth overall in 19:38.

To find a faster woman's time at Prefontaine than Sack's, you'd have to go all the way back to 2012, when three-time women's champ Micah Adriani ran the race in 20:58. Tallahassee Community College cross-country runner Genevieve Printiss finished runner-up to Sack in the women's standings, placing fifteenth overall in 22:52. Alyssa Terry held off Brittney Barnes for the third women's spot, 23:02 to 23:07. Terry and Barnes were eighteenth and nineteenth overall. Coming in twentieth overall, Lourena Maxwell was the top woman master and fifth female finisher. Maxwell's time was 23:13.

117 athletes finished the 43rd annual Salute to Prefontaine 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.

Brad Busboom and Kat Sack win a steamy trail race in Maclay Gardens

On Saturday morning, 21 July 2018, the air in Tallahassee’s Maclay Gardens State Park seemed humid enough to drink. It wasn’t quite humid enough to drown the mosquitoes, though. Nor was it humid enough to put the damper on the competition in the third race of Gulf Winds Track Club’s 2018 Summer Trail Series. On the men’s side, Brad Busboom and Jim Schafer battled for four of the five miles before Busboom broke away to win in 38:26. On the women's side, the race came down to a final kick, with Kat Sack prevailing over Emily Molen 44:39 to 44:40.

GWTC’s Summer Trail Series has been around since 2013. Before the Maclay Gardens event, there had been 22 series races. During that history, the circuit had taken runners to a variety of Tallahassee trails, but never to the paths in Maclay Gardens. Before 1994, you might have seen a wedding in the Gardens, but not much in the way of places to hike, bike, or run. That year, though, the state park acquired the Lake Overstreet tract, adding a trail system.

Next door to the Lake Overstreet tract is Maclay School, where Gary Droze has been coaching cross-country and track longer than the tract has been part of Maclay Gardens. If anyone knows the Overstreet trails, it’s Coach Droze. At Saturday’s trail race, Droze bolted out into the lead, making it to the narrow South Bike Extension Trail before the rest of the field. As difficult as passing could be on the single-track path, though, Brad Busboom and Jim Schafer were able to get around Droze. Busboom took over the lead, with Schafer a few steps behind. With just over a mile to go, Busboom started to pull away from Schafer.

Jim Schafer

“He started to take off right at the last water station,” said Schafer. “I think he had a lot left in the tank. He’s a good runner.”

The last mile included a lot of downhill and Busboom expanded his lead on the descent, going on to win in 38:26. Schafer was second in 39:02. Droze was the first master runner in the race and third overall in 40:18.

Emily Molen, a rising junior on the Chiles High cross-country team, had taken the women’s title on 23 June 2018 at Munson Hills in the first trail series race. But on 7 July 2018 at Phipps Park in the second race of the circuit, Kat Sack had been first woman. At Maclay Gardens, Molen set the early pace for the women’s field, leaving Sack well behind.

“The first mile of the race, being uphill, my quads were already burning,” said Sack.

Despite muscle pain, Sack made up the ground, overtaking Molen about four miles into the race. Molen hung on, remaining only steps behind. Sack was able to maintain her slim lead, though, crossing the finish line in 44:39 to Molen’s 44:40. Sack and Molen were eleventh and twelfth overall. Lourena Maxwell was the first woman master and third female finisher, 26th overall in 48:54.

Chance Logan and Kat Sack keep winning in Blountstown at the Catfish Crawl

2018 Catfish Crawl 5KOn Saturday morning, 19 May 2018, Chance Logan was back in competition. Three weeks earlier he had posted a win at the Tate's Hell & Back 5K in Carrabelle, Florida. This time, he was racing closer to home at the seventh annual Catfish Crawl in Blountstown, Florida, a race where he had placed eighth in 2017. But in 2018, there was no one ahead of Logan when he crossed the finish line in 19:07, the new Catfish Crawl champ. Tallahassee, Florida athlete Kat Sack was the first woman in the 5K, successfully defending her 2017 Catfish Crawl women's title and placing fourth overall in 20:59.

Enrique Nandho, a rising senior on the Blountstown High cross-country team, finished runner-up to Logan in 19:31. Laryn Flikkema of Tallahassee was the fastest master runner in the Catfish Crawl and third overall in 20:41.

Tallahassee schoolteacher Laura McDermott placed second in the women's standings, coming in sixth overall in 21:35. Paula O'Neill of Tallahassee was the first woman master and third female finisher, fourteenth overall in 23:53.

133 athletes finished the 2018 Catfish Crawl 5K. The Blountstown Fire Department hosts the race each year on the third Saturday in May, so look for the eighth annual Catfish Crawl on the Blountstown Rail Trail on 18 May 2019.

Grossman and Judd were the top marathoners on the Swamp Forest Trail

All the carbohydrate a human body can store is not enough to get through the 26 miles and 385 yards of a marathon. Glycogen alone will only get you so far, and you'll still need to go about 40% farther. Fat and protein make up the difference. Guts may figure into it as well. It's a tough race.

For some folks, though, the marathon by itself isn't tough enough. So they add to the challenge by running the 26-plus miles on narrow trails. On winding, narrow trails. On winding, narrow trails that climb up and down the slopes of the Lake Jackson Basin.

2018 Swamp Forest Trail Marathon
The Start

That somewhat describes Gulf Winds Track Club's Swamp Forest Trail Marathon, north of Tallahassee, Florida in Phipps Park. Nothing says "fun run" like the chance of tripping over a root and hurting yourself.

Master runner Zachary Grossman won the fifth annual Swamp Forest Trail Marathon on Saturday morning, 6 January 2018, finishing almost a mile and a half ahead of the next runner. Grossman covered the four-loop course in 4:24:26. Jason Huang edged Steven Wilson for second, 4:38:58 to 4:39:10.

In 2016 and 2017, Monica Judd raced the half-marathon event at the Swamp Forest Trail Races, collecting a third-place and a second-place finish in the women's division. In 2018, though, Judd decided to move up to the marathon. The longer race agreed with Judd, as the master runner won the women's title in 5:15:36, placing tenth overall. Master runner Lisa Homann was second in the women's standings and twelfth overall in 5:27:15. Megan Federico was the third woman and twentieth overall in 6:12:39.

25 athletes finished the 2018 Swamp Forest Trail Marathon.

While the marathoners were making four laps around the loop in Phipps Park, the half-marathoners were content to leave it at two circuits. In the case of Charlie Johnson, though, it was two fast circuits. Johnson won the half marathon for a second year in a row, setting a new Swamp Forest Trail Half Marathon record of 1:28:44. Johnson had set the previous course record, 1:34:17, in the 2017 race. Jon Mason was the fastest master runner in the half marathon, placing second overall in 1:50:07. Jordan Cooper and John Ellis were third and fourth, each in 1:59:00.

Charlie Johnson, Kat Sack

Kat Sack was the first woman in the half marathon, placing seventh overall in 2:04:55. Melissa Hooke took second in the women's standings, fifteenth overall in 2:14:37. Mary Jane Hayden edged master runner Katasha Cornwell for the third woman's spot, 2:16:32 to 2:16:33. Hayden and Cornwell placed eighteenth and nineteenth overall.

You could argue that after you'd one one lap at the Swamp Forest Trail races, you'd already seen everything on the course. You could also admit that you only wanted to run about six-and-a-half miles. Whatever their reasons, 70 athletes opted for the one-lap option, racing a quarter-marathon. Master runner Eric Sager was the first of those 70 to finish, running 52:51 and winning the race for the second year in a row. Erik Anderson was runner-up in the quarter-marathon, running 54:32. Alex Edwards edged Zach DeVeau for third, 55:34 to 55:37.

Eric Sager, Rachael Stockel

Maclay sophomore Rachael Stockel was the top woman in the quarter-marathon race, placing eighth overall in 59:08--a new Swamp Forest Trail women's record. Alyssa Terry was second in the women's category and twelfth overall in 61:07. Deirdre McCarthy was the third woman and seventeenth overall in 67:15. Alison Dudley outkicked Marien Dimacali 68:20 to 68:22 for top woman master honors. Dudley and Dimacali were 21st and 22nd overall.

In addition to being the fifth year of Gulf Winds Track Club's Swamp Forest Trail Marathon, 2018 was also the last year that Jim and Kristin Halley will direct the race. The Halleys led the event for two years after taking over from the race founder, Bobby York. If the Swamp Forest Trail races return in 2019, it will be with a new team of directors.

They keep going and going and going at the Tallahassee Ultra-Distance Classic

In order to get some appreciation of an ultra-marathon performance, sometimes you have to take it to pieces. Consider the 50-kilometer race at Gulf Winds Track Club's 37th annual Tallahassee Ultra-Distance Classic, held at Florida's Wakulla Springs State Park on Saturday morning, 9 December 2017. 60-year-old Thomas Dever started off that race with a 44:41 10K. Now, that's not an Olympic-calibre time, but there are plenty of younger runners out there who would be happy to run 44:41.

After finishing that 10K, Dever kept going and ran a faster 10K.

Then he ran a third 10K even faster.

Still without a pause, Dever's fourth ten kilometers was his fastest of the morning, a 43:04. For his fifth and final 10K, the Terre Haute, Indiana master runner let up a bit, running 43:47. His total time for 50 kilometers was 3:38:23, and it was no wonder that Dever won the 31-mile race with a three-mile lead. Tallahassee, Florida master runner Jack McDermott, who won the TUDC 50K race in 2008 and 2014, placed second to Dever in 3:58:34. Nineteen-year-old Addison Hendricks of Pensacola, Florida took third in 4:05:09.

Thomas Dever, Kat Sack

On 4 November 2017 Tallahassee's Kat Sack had run her first marathon, a 3:26:05 at the Savannah Rock 'n' Roll Marathon. Just one month later Sack was attempting to run eight kilometers farther than a marathon, racing the 50K at the Tallahassee Ultra-Distance Classic. She was more than successful, placing fifth overall in 4:15:24, the first woman in the race. Johanna Rogers of Islesboro, Maine was the first woman master and second female finisher in the 50K, placing seventh overall in 4:29:29. Tallahassee master runners Jamie Harris and Marci Gray both finished in 5:04:01, taking third and fourth in the women's standings and placing ninth and tenth overall.

A marathon is 26.2 miles, and there are more than a few runners who would be happy to be able to run that distance in under four hours. The longest race at the Tallahassee Ultra-Distance Classic, though, is 50 miles--nearly twice the length of a marathon. Peter Strickland of Rome, Georgia won the 50-mile at the 2017 Classic in 7:28:37, maintaining better than four-hour marathon pace over a distance that was almost two back-to-back marathons. He didn't do it entirely alone--during the first half of the race, Strickland and Tallahassee's Erik Andersen were running together. After the 30th kilometer of the 62-kilometer run, though, Strickland broke away. Andersen dropped back, eventually finishing fifth overall in 8:28:12. Mark Tombrink of Tallahassee, the 2015 TUDC 50-Mile champion, overtook Andersen early in the second half of the race, going on to take second in 7:58:52.

Jamie Cooper was the top woman in the 50-mile, taking third overall in 8:01:14.

Christopher Knight of Deerfield Beach, Florida was the top master runner and third male finisher, fourth overall in 8:21:02. Sandra Garrett of Tampa, Florida was the first woman master and second female-finisher, sixth overall in 8:30:41.

Geneva, Florida master runner Petya Fernlund placed third in the women's standings, finishing eighth overall in 9:22:59.

45 athletes finished the 2017 Tallahassee Ultra-Distance Classic 5K, and twelve more finished the 50 mile. Gulf Winds Track Club chip timed both races.

Carlson and Sack take Miller Landing Madness

In Tallahassee, Florida nearly 600 athletes were at Phipps Park on Saturday morning, 19 August 2017, for three different cross-country races. It was Gulf Winds Track Club’s tenth annual Miller Landing Madness. Clayton Carlson won the 8K, the headline race, covering the not-quite-five-mile course in 29:11. Kat Sack took the women’s title for the second year in a row, placing fourteenth overall in 35:01.

“The guy who won the 8K was so far ahead of me I didn’t know he was in the race,” said Bryan Koon, who placed third in 31:05.

Some confusion was understandable. The 5K race was run concurrently with the 8K. Carlson had a big enough lead that he was out of sight by the time it would have become clear that he was running the 8K. As a six-year veteran of the Miller Landing Madness, Carlson has run each of the three races at one time or another. In 2012 and 2013, when he was a member of the Swift Creek Middle School cross-country team, Carlson raced the Miller Landing Madness 3K. From 2014 to 2016, his first three years running cross-country for Lincoln High, he raced the 5K. This year, though, his senior year at Lincoln, Carlson moved up to the 8K.

“Coach Sumner wanted me to do the 8K, something harder,” explained Carlson. However difficult the extra distance was, he enjoyed the run. “It’s got a lot of hills and the water pit kind of threw me off but it’s a nice course. We’ve got a race here next weekend at the Cougar Challenge.”

Kat Sack

The Cougar Challenge on Aug. 26 is the cross-country season opener for Carlson, his Lincoln teammates, and many of the other high school runners in town. The “water pit,” an obstacle that the runners in the 5K and 8K had to splash through twice, won’t be part of the course that day.

Carlson wasn’t the only high school harrier in the 8K. Weston Schrock, a senior on the Blountstown High cross-country team, was second in 30:58. Elsewhere on the age spectrum, Bryan Koon was the top master runner in the race, third overall in 31:05.

Sheryl Rosen
Sheryl Rosen

In the women’s competition, three-time Miller Landing Madness champion Sheryl Rosen was close enough to see that Kat Sack was in the 8K, but not close enough to catch her. Rosen, the women’s record holder in the event, was second in the women’s standings and fifteenth overall in 35:20. Alyssa Terry was the third woman and 32nd overall in 39:35. Monica Judd was the top woman master and fourth female finisher, 35th overall in 40:12.

Patrick Koon, a sixth-grader on the Fairview Middle School cross country team, raced 11:01 for the win. Paige Churchill, a seventh-grader on the Swift Creek Middle School squad, was the first female finisher, placing eleventh overall in 12:43.

“About half a mile in I took the lead,” said Koon. “It’s fast, downhill, and I like the water. I really love this course.”

“I got a good start, but after that hill--well, I didn’t get enough to eat this morning. I don’t really do well in morning races,” said Churchill. “I liked the water! It was fun.”
