First woman, first master, first overall--Katie Sherron was the First Lady of the GWTC 30K

In the days leading up to Saturday morning, 18 January 2025, Tallahassee, Florida was getting weather forecasts with the apocalyptic tone that meteorologists usually reserve for hurricane season. There would be rain--inches of it. Then the temperatures would plunge to below freezing, frigid for the region. Then the precipitation would return but as snow. Or freezing rain. Or both. There would likely be polar bear attacks.

When the predicted rain finally did show up on Saturday, it was many hours after the 48th annual Gulf Winds Track Club 30K was complete--fortunate because the antebellum-era dirt roads that the race has been run on for the past two decades are less than perfect during rain. But the running surface was excellent in the morning, and master runner Katie Sherron took advantage of the good roads. She won the race in 1:58:17, the fastest time ever run by a woman on the Old Centerville Road course. Charlie Johnson, Tallahassee master runner and triathlete, was the first male finisher in the 30K, coming in second overall in 1:59:36.


It was cool and cloudy when the race started from the Retreat at Bradley's Pond, just after 8:00 AM. Very early on, Gary Rowan of Adel, Georgia was setting the pace for the 30K field. Rowan was still leading after seven kilometers, not quite halfway to the turnaround of the out-and-back course. Charlie Johnson was not far behind, and Katie Sherron was moving into contention. With ten kilometers to go, Johnson was the leader with Sherron 150 meters back in second.

"I hit the turnaround at about 59:45," recalled Sherron. "Charlie and I had talked about trying to break two hours and we both did it."


But Sherron did it first. After going out in 59:45, she made the return trip over a minute faster, overtaking Johnson on the way. She was nearly 300 meters ahead when she crossed the finish line in a winning 1:58:17. Johnson took second overall in 1:59:35, the first male finisher in the 30K. Rowan was third overall and second in the men's standings at 2:01:31.

Crawfordville, Florida master runner Mike Tercyak was the third man in the race, taking fourth overall in 2:02:27.


Gabriella Passidomo Smith of Tallahassee was second in the women's division, coming in ninth overall in 2:23:50. Stephanie Liles-Weyant was the third woman, twelfth overall in 2:26:46. Liles-Weyant had been the GWTC 30K women's champ in 2006, the first year the race was run on the Old Centerville Road course.

The GWTC 15K started at the same time as the 30K. Leonardo Canete, entered in the 15K, led the athletes in both races almost from the start. The Tallahassee master runner continued to lead the 15K to the turnaround and back, covering the course in a winning 58:32. Second overall in 60:25, Madeline Frank was the first woman in the race, finishing the fifteen kilometers before any other woman had gone thirteen kilometers.

Stephen Andrews made up some ground during the second half of the 15K to take second in the men's standings, coming in third overall in 60:52. Tallahassee master runner Hong-Guo Yu was the third man and fourth overall in 61:25.


Tallaahssee's Jillian Heddaeus was the first woman master in the 15K, placing second in the women's division and twentieth overall in 69:50. Melanie Leitman, another Tallahassee master runner, was the third woman and 21st overall in 71:00. Two years earlier, Leitman had taken first in the GWTC 30K.

32 athletes finished the 2025 Gulf Winds Track Club 30K, and another 101 completed the 15K event. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the races.

Alyson Churchill posts a swift homecoming win at the Tannenbaum 6K

Saturday, 21 December 2024 was the first day of winter in the northern hemisphere. So although it was sunny and bright in Tallahassee, Florida that morning, the Capital City was experiencing its version of winter temperatures, dipping below 40 °F. At Apalachee Regional Park Championship Cross-Country Course, the athletes gathered for Gulf Winds Track Club's twelfth annual Tannenbaum Trail 6K were so bundled up because of the chill that it was hard to recognize anyone. One runner, though, was clearly identifiable by her stride--springy and energetic, even while warming up before the race. It was Alyson Churchill, whose distinctive stride carried her over the course in 21:46, good for first place overall. Master runner and triathlete Charlie Johnson was the top male finisher, placing runner-up to Churchill in 22:00.

Master runner Bryan Hendricks was the early pacesetter in the race, charging into the lead just after the 8:00 AM start. Two kilometers in, Hendricks had 50 meters on the field, with Alyson Churchill and Leonardo Canete leading the pursuit. The two-kilometer mark was on the Shell Bridge, the lowest point on the two-loop course. During the next kilometer, the runners would climb to regain the elevation they had lost on the way to the Shell Bridge; that climb would include ARPXC's notorious hill--the Wall.


"It was just after the wall where I passed Bryan Hendricks," recalled Churchill. "We ran together up the wall and then I passed him coming up behind the fence area."

By the three-kilometer mark, Churchill had opened a 40-meter gap. Master runners Canete and Charlie Johnson had caught up with Hendricks. Canaan Ponce, a harrier for Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, was a few more steps back. Churchill, though, was widening the gap.


She doubled her lead during the second half of the race, going on to win in 21:46, the fastest Tannenbaum by a woman in the twelve-year history of the race, beating the old mark of 21:56 run by Stefanie Slekis in 2012. It was Churchill's third time as first female at the Tannenbaum; she had also led the women's standings in 2016 and 2019. This time Churchill led everyone.

Charlie Johnson was the first male finisher, coming in second overall in 22:00. Leonard Canete took second in the men's standings, placing third overall in 22:20. Canaan Ponce was the first Junior (U19) in the race, the third male and fourth overall in 22:29. At 23:02, Bryan Hendricks was the third master runner, the fourth male finisher, and fifth overall.


The first woman master was Florida State professor Dr. Katie Sherron, coming in eighth overall iin 23:32. Second in women's division in 2024, Sherron had previously won four Tannenbaum titles, having been first female in 2011, 2015, 2017, and 2022. Master runner Amy Hines took third in the women's ranks, finishing tenth overall in 23:41. Flagler University alum Megan Churchill was the fourth female finisher and fifteenth overall in 24:44.

143 athletes finished the 2024 Tannenbaum Trail 6K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race. Look for the thirteenth annual Tannenbaum Trail 6K on Saturday morning, 20 December 2025.

Potluck was good luck for Charlie Johnson and Ann Centner

A gentle rain sprinkled the north side of Tallahassee, Florida on Saturday evening, 8 June 2019. In Phipps Park, Gulf Winds Track Club’s 22nd annual Potluck Four-Mile Cross-Country Race was about to start.


“You couldn’t ask for better conditions,” declared race director David Yon.

Well, you could. You could also ask for a pony. But compared to Potluck years when the race took place under a blazing hot sun or during a cloudburst, these were conditions to enjoy. Charlie Johnson enjoyed them by winning the race in 25:37, finishing nearly 200 meters ahead of the next runner. Ann Centner was the first woman at Potluck, placing fourth overall in 27:35. Centner was also the 2016 women's champ, so she knows how capricious the weather can be at Potluck.


“I remember driving to the race through a horrible rainstorm,” said Centner.

Potluck includes a predict-your-time contest, so no one was supposed to be carrying a watch. Consequently, hardly anyone noticed that the race got started several minutes after the scheduled time of 6:00 PM. The race soon became a Charlie vs. Charlie matchup, with Charlie Kline leading and Charlie Johnson a close second. In this, as in many other local races, the two Charlies were fighting over the top spot.


“I was waiting for him to blast away from me, but he never did,” said Johnson. “He told me he was out of shape, which makes sense, because when he’s fit I can’t catch him.”

Back on the trails of Phipps Park, Johnson did catch the other Charlie. He glanced back with just under a mile to go, but Kline and the rest of the pursuit was out of sight, a hundred meters back. Unchallenged, Johnson continued home in a winning 25:37. Kline was second in 26:17, and Zach DeVeau third in 27:20. Hong-Guo Yu was the fastest master runner in the race, the sixth male runner and seventh overall in 28:33.


It was Johnson’s first Potluck win, although he had run the race previously and finished second in 2018. For Kline, it was his first time racing Potluck.

“I haven’t done any trail running since high school cross-country,” said Kline. “But this wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. The turns weren’t as tight and the ups and downs weren’t as tough.”


Centner led the women’s field from the very first. Behind her, Brittney Barnes was second among the women during the early going. Alyssa Terry soon took over the second position, but Barnes wasn’t going away.

“Brittney was pretty close behind me,” said Terry. “With about a mile to go I saw her back there and that motivated me to run faster.”


While Centner collected the women's title in 27:35, Terry gritted her teeth and held off Barnes, finishing runner-up in the women's standings and eighteenth overall in 31:04. Barnes was the third woman and nineteenth overall in 31:28. Stephanie Liles-Weyant edged Lourena Maxwell for first woman master honors, 32:22 to 32:26. Liles-Weyant was fourth on the women’s side and 24th overall, Maxwell was the fifth woman and 26th overall.

Charlie Johnson and Amanda Sava each collect a second Tails & Trails title

On the east side of Tallahassee, Florida, Tom Brown Park, Lafayette Heritage Park, and the Alford Greenway are connected by dozens if not hundreds of miles of trails. Charlie Johnson covered 13.1 miles on those trails in 1:25:32 to win the half-marathon at the eighteenth annual Tails & Trails on Saturday morning, 4 May 2019. Amanda Sava was the first woman in the race, defending her 2018 title in the half marathon with a 1:38:43 and placing seventh overall.


The Animal Shelter Foundation has always hosted the event, starting in 2002 with a 5K race, adding a 10K in 2006 and the half marathon in 2015. Two days before the 2019 Tails & Trails, the longest run was in peril.

“I got a call from the city on Thursday at 4:30,” said Tom Perkins. “There was a hawk attacking people in Lafayette Heritage Park. We were going to have to cancel the race or re-route it.”


It turned out that a very minor change of course satisfied the hawk’s territorial instincts, and the half-marathon started from the Animal Sheter as scheduled at 7:45 AM, with Jeff Nielsen guiding the runners on the lead bicycle. After the first minute of running, Charlie Johnson was already well ahead of the field. No one, athlete or irate bird, challenged Johnson for the rest of the race.


“I was hoping for a hawk attack,” said Johnson. “Anything to have some excitement out there. It helped to have Jeff Nielsen out there on the bicycle, telling me, ‘Okay, there’s a big hill coming up.’”

There are numerous hills on the Tails & Trails half marathon course, which takes the runners in and out of the Lake Lafayette basin before finishing back at the Animal Shelter, atop the ridge that Easterwood Drive runs along. Amanda Sava also noticed those hills.


“It was tough!” said Sava. “I ran a lot faster this year. I think I’m in better shape, but I ran a triathlon last week and my legs are still recovering. I’m happy with my race, though. I’ll probably take a little break after this.”

Behind Johnson’s winning 1:25:32, Brad Busboom took second in 1:32:31 and Andrew Theodore third in 1:36:47. Jack McDermott was the first master runner in the half marathon, placing fourth overall in 1:36:47.


Melissa Thompson finished runner-up to Sava in the women's standings, placing sixteenth overall in 1:52:26. Courtney Mason was the third woman and seventeenth overall in 1:53:19. Laura Reina was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, twentieth overall in 1:55:11.

The Tails & Trails 10K started at 8:30, when the fastest half marathon runners were still exploring the Alford Greenway. Pensacola, Florida master runner Jennifer McGranahan was not only the first woman in the race, she was also the overall winner. McGranahan grabbed the lead right after the start, shadowed by Sean Landeta of Thomasville, Georgia. Landeta hung on for the first half of the race, but McGranahan got away after the leaders had turned around for the return trip to the Animal Shelter. 50 meters ahead by the six-kilometer mark, McGranahan finished with a lead of nearly 200 meters and a winning time of 46:08.

“That was fun!” said McGranahan. “I’ll be out there next year. I liked everything that went into this race; the trails, the family discount, the animals. It’s a nice way to find good homes for some animals.”


McGranahan has deep running roots in Pensacola, having raced cross-country and track for Pensacola High before going on to compete for the University of Florida. Currently, she’s working on a degree in physical therapy at Florida A&M University.

“I usually run the Fiesta of Five Flags 10K in Pensacola, and I could have driven back for that,” said McGranahan. “But I thought, ‘No!’ I love Tom Brown Park and the trails.”


Sean Landeta was the first man in the race, coming in second overall in 46:57. Paul Guyas was the first male master, third overall in 47:12. Master runner Tim Unger was third on the men's side and fifth overall in 48:40.

Tim Unger is Lilli Unger’s father, and Lilli Unger was second in the women’s standings.The Leon High cross-country runner placed fourth overall in 47:54. Alyssa Terry finished third in the women's division and seventh overall in 50:04.

The Tails & Trails 5K started at the same time as the 10K. Kurt Dietrich took the early lead in the 3.1-mile race. Having won the 5K in 2017 and 2018, Dietrich was going for a third straight title, but Connor Edwards denied him that. Edwards, an eighth-grader at Swift Creek Middle School, overtook Dietrich then went on to win the race in 19:44. Dietrich was second in 20:00, and Daniel Wurgler third in 20:14. Aaron Guyer was the top master runner in the 5K, placing seventh overall in 21:06.

In the 2015 Tails & Trails 10K Brittney Barnes had been the first woman. In the 2016 Tails & Trails 5K Barnes had been the first woman. In the 2019 5K she was again the first woman, placing ninth overall in 21:38. Amelia Bryant was second to Barnes, placing thirteenth overall in 25:10. Twelve-year-old Liliana Lewis edged Paula O'Neill for the third spot in the women's standings, 25:47 to 25:49. The two were sixteenth and seventeenth overall. O'Neill was the first woman master in the race.

643 athletes crossed the finish line at the 2019 Tails & Trails, with 125 completing the half marathon, 148 the 10K, 302 the 5K, and 68 the one-mile fun run. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee chip-timed each of the four races.
