In Tallahassee, Cadden Maxwell and Megan Churchill were flying at the Firecracker

On Tuesday, 4 July 2023, the United States of America turned 247 years old. In Tallahassee, Florida that same morning, the Capital City Kiwanis Club's Firecracker 5K turned 40. More than 400 athletes turned out in Cascades Park to observe that latter anniversary, including Cadden Maxwell, who won the race in 17:41. Also attending the celebration was Megan Churchill, the first woman in the race and fifth overall in 18:55.

The race started at 8:00 AM on Suwanee Street, with the athletes heading north. One runner darted out in front of the field.


"I don't remember his name, but he was leading for the first two minutes," recalled Cadden Maxwell.

That early leader was Josha Robinson, a rising senior at John Paul II Catholic High School. Maxwell overtook Robinson early in the race, and never had to look back again, running unchallenged on his way to a 17:41 win. Running 18:15, Robinson clung to second.


Behind, Maxwell and Robinson, Tallahassee's Hong-Guo Yu and Michael Rhodes of Perry, Florida dueled for the top master runner spot in the 5K. By the end of the second kilometer, the two had moved up through the field and were also fighting for third. They swapped positions a few times during the race, but Hong-Guo Yu was the first master runner across the finish line, third overall in 18:30, while Rhodes took fourth in 18:50.

A rising junior at Leon High, Maxwell finished his sophomore year high school track season just two months before the Firecracker. On the track, he specialized at 800 meters and 1600 meters, both significantly shorter than the 5000 meters of the Firecracker.


"I adjust really well to the longer distances," said Maxwell. "I like cross-country, where we run 5K, a lot more than track."

The 2023 race was the 40th Firecracker 5K, but it was the ninth to have been run in Cascades Park. The first Firecracker in the Park was the 2014 race, which was also Megan Churchill's first Firecracker.


"Not my first race, but I have been doing this race for a long time," said Churchill. "I love this race!"

You have to look deep into the 2014 results to find Churchill's name. After that, though, she started to get serious about racing. After two years of competing in cross-country for Swift Creek Middle School, Churchill raced for Lincoln High and then Chiles High. She'll be wearing the uniform of a Flagler College Saint during the 2023 cross-country season, her third at that school.


Each year, though, Churchill returned to Firecracker, missing only the 2022 race. 2023 was her eighth. Leading the women's field almost from the start, she threw down her fastest Firecracker performance yet--a winning 18:55. Megan Noonan took second in the women's standings, placing eleventh overall in 20:43. Brittney Barnes, women's champ at the 2016 Firecracker 5K, was the third woman in 2023, eighteenth overall in 21:40. Nancy Proctor was the first woman master, placing eighth in the women's division and 40th overall in 24:05.

418 athletes finished the Capital City Kiwanis' 2023 Firecracker 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race. Look for the 41st annual Firecracker 5K in Cascades Park on Tuesday morning, 4 July 2024.

From 1983 to 2012 the Firecracker 5000 was run in Gadsden County from
Sycamore to Greensboro.
In 2013 the Firecracker 5000 was run in Tallahassee on trails in Phipps
Park.
In 2014 the Firecracker 5000 was run in Tallahassee from Cascades Park
on USATF Certified Course FL14067EBM.
In 2015 the Firecracker 5000 was run in Tallahassee from Cascades Park
on USATF Certified Course FL15071EBM.
In 2016 the Firecracker 5000 was run in Tallahassee from Cascades Park
on USATF Certified Course FL14149EBM.
Due to COVID-19, there was no 2020 Firecracker 5000.

Tyler Godwin and Megan Churchill demonstrate cross-country dominance at the Freedom 5K

Is the Paul Hoover Memorial Freedom 5K a cross-country race?


That's not a straightforward question. The race starts and finishes on pavement, but most of the 3.1-mile course is unpaved. The competitors don't dash across meadows or leap streams or slog through mud, but they do race along trails in Wakulla Springs State Park, circle a sinkhole, and test their footing on sand and gravel. The race is hosted by the Wakulla High Cross-Country Boosters and named in memory of Wakulla High cross-country coach Paul Hoover. Additionally, on Saturday morning, 24 June 2023, the top honors at the tenth annual Freedom 5K went to cross-country runner Tyler Godwin. Godwin, who has been racing cross-country for three years at Bluffton High, won the race in 17:13. Megan Churchill, about to start her junior year as a harrier for the Flagler College Saints, was the first woman in the race, placing eleventh overall in 20:32.


Right behind Godwin at 17:29, another harrier was runner-up--Henry Lewis, a rising junior at Wakulla High and the ace of his school's cross-country team. Leonardo Canete of Tallahassee was the first master runner in the race, coming in third overall in 17:36.


Megan Churchill's two years as a Flagler Saint weren't her only cross-country experience. As a schoolgirl in Tallahassee, Churchill had put in two seasons of racing in middle school and four more years in high school. There was one gap in her resume, though.


"It was my first time racing the Paul Hoover 5K," said Churchill. "I'm glad I got to do it!"


Nevertheless, Churchill's 20:32 put her across the finish line before more than a few Freedom 5K veterans. For instance, women's runner-up Brittney Barnes had been the seventh woman in the 2018 Freedom 5K. In 2023 Barnes was seventeenth overall in 21:14. Behind Barnes, Isabella Laughton, a rising junior on the Wakulla high cross-country squad, was third in the women's standings and eighteenth overall in 21:27. The women's runner-up in the 2022 race, Laughton was racing in her fourth Freedom 5K. Ruffian Tyner was the first woman master and the eighth female finisher, 35th overall in 24:01.


182 athletes finished the Wakulla High Cross-Country Boosters' tenth annual Paul Hoover Freedom 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee chip-timed the race.

Chris Haynes runs a CR 1:43:01 in the Gulf Winds Track Club 30K

The Gulf Winds Track Club 30K has been run annually at a variety of venues since 1978, but starting in 2006 the race has been Moccasin Gap, north of Tallahassee. The course there takes the runners ten kilometers north on Old Centerville Road then five kilometers west on Sunny Hill Road, after which they turn around return the way they came. Most of the thirty kilometers is on clay, nearly all of it is on hills. In the 2017 race, Stan Linton shrugged off a muddy road and charged through the Red Hills to set a course record of 1:46:13. That record would only last a year, though. On Saturday morning, 20 January 2018, Chris Haynes won the 41st annual Gulf Winds Track Club 30K in 1:43:01, chopping more than three minutes off of Linton's record. It was Haynes' first time running the race, but not Katie Sherron's. Sherron won her sixth GWTC 30K women's title that morning, placing seventh overall in 2:10:13.

The race started from the Retreat at Bradley's Pond at 8:00 AM. Vince Molosky, a five-time winner of the 30K, darted out into the lead, running the first mile under 5:30. Haynes was well behind Molosky, covering the first mile in 5:45. However, Haynes also went 5:45 on the second mile while Molosky slowed down. By the two-mile mark, Haynes had taken over the lead from Molosky. A third 5:45 mile kept Haynes in front, then he started going faster. The race was his.

"I liked the downhills because it was free speed," said Haynes. "The dirt was hard packed. It was a lot of fun. Great people cheering me on the whole race which was awesome. I just did my best to stay consistent and relaxed."


Haynes was alone when he reached the turnaround at the fifteen kilometer mark in 52:00. He ran the second half even faster, covering the final fifteen kilometers in 51:01 en route to the finish line at Bradley's Pond, which he reached in a winning 1:43:01.

While Haynes was running away from the field, Charlie Johnson was closing in on Vince Molosky.


"I caught Vince less than a mile from the turnaround," said Johnson, the winner of the GWTC 30K in 2012 and 2016. "It was a flat stretch. He passed me back on the downhill because he's better on the downhill than I am, but I passed him for good before the turnaround."

Johnson held on to second, running 1:47:51. Chris O'Kelley took third in 1:57:42, passing Molosky with just over a mile to go. Molosky was fourth in 1:59:12, and Robert Duggleby fifth in 2:05:17. David Graf was the fastest master runner in the race, placing sixth overall in 2:09:30.


"It was a near perfect day for running as far as I can tell," said Johnson. "I'd like it if Tallahassee Marathon is like this."

Women's champ Katie Sherron was another athlete taking advantage of the "near perfect day." Leading the women's field from start to finish, Sherron's winning 2:10:13 was her fastest time yet in the GWTC 30K. Sheryl Rosen, a four-time women's champ at the 30K, took second in the women's standings, placing twelfth overall in 2:14:02. Kat Sack was the third woman and sixteenth overall in 2:21:59. Nancy Stedman was the first woman master and eighth female finisher, 31st overall in 2:40:59.

Since 2006 a 15K has been run at the same time as the 30K, with the runners in the shorter race turning around after seven-and-a-half kilometers on Old Centerville Road. Tate Wallenfelsz, a junior-year cross-country runner at Leon High, won the race in 57:39. The next three places also belonged to the Leon cross-country team, with sophomores Joseph Ashebo and Bryson Gonzalez second and thir in 57:53 and 57:55, and junior Ashton Smith fourth in 59:17. Tallahassee's Carter Hay edged Matthew Rowan of Quincy for the top master spot, 59:44 to 59:50. Hay and Rowan were fifth and sixth overall.

Brittney Barnes led the 15K women's field at the turnaround, but Megan Churchill was close behind. A sophomore on the Lincoln High cross-country team, Churchill overtook Barnes early in the second half of the race then raced home to take the women's title, placing thirteenth overall in 1:06:08. Barnes was the women's runner-up and seventeenth overall in 1:06:53. Alyssa Terry was third in the women's standings and twentieth overall in 1:08:42. Alison Thumm was the first woman master and sixth female finisher, 28th overall in 71:39.

Schmidt and Piekarewicz score come-from-behind victories at Springtime

Schmidt versus Kaiser. It sounds like a pairing in the German national championships. Instead it was the match-up on the streets of Tallahassee, Florida as Roger Schmidt and Nate Kaiser battled down to the wire for first place in the 41st annual Springtime 10K. In the end Schmidt pulled ahead to get the win, 34:06 to 34:16. On the women's side Adriana Piekarewicz got the win, placing fifteenth overall in 39:09.

The race started at 8:15 AM on Saturday morning, 2 April 2016, on Monroe Street in front of the Leon County Courthouse. Matt Mizereck of Capital City Runners charged to the front. A three-time state cross-country champion when he ran for Leon High School, Mizereck was seven seconds ahead of the rest of the field at the two-kilometer mark where the race turned east onto Lafayette Street. Mizereck's closest pursuers at that point were Roger Schmidt, Nate Kaiser, and three-time Springtime 10K champion Chris Lake. In Myers Park, Lake fell back, leaving the chase to Kaiser and Schmidt. Sometimes Kaiser led Schmidt, other times Schmidt led Kaiser, but they always trailed Mizereck. At the halfway point on Golf Terrace Drive Mizereck's lead was longer than ever. During the second half of the race, though, the story changed.


"When Matt took it out I thought he looked so at ease," said Schmidt. "But then later in the race I saw him look back. I told Nate, 'I think he's fading.'"

Schmidt and Kaiser started to close on Mizereck. Near the Old Fort, just past the six kilometer mark, they caught him, then left him behind. The race was now between Kaiser and Schmidt.


Just past eight kilometers Schmidt pushed a few steps ahead of Kaiser. By nine kilometers Schmidt's lead was five seconds and growing. Schmidt was first over the finish line in 34:06; Kaiser followed in 34:16. Mizereck was third in 35:09. Charlie Johnson took fourth in 35:30, and Chris Lake was fifth in 35:59. Gary Droze, Maclay School's head track coach, was the top master runner in the race, placing ninth overall in 37:06.


Alyson Churchill, a distance runner on the Swift Creek Middle School track team, hadn't planned to run the Springtime 10K. Just three weeks earlier she had raced her first 10K ever at the Thomasville Road Baptist Church Road Race, winning the women's title in 40:16. However, Churchill was scheduled to play in a Jacksonville soccer tournament on the day of Springtime. When the tournament was canceled due to bad weather, plans changed, and Churchill was on the starting line on Monroe Street. She was also fast off that starting line, leading the women's field early in the race. But Adriana Piekarewicz overtook Churchill as they turned onto Myers Park Drive, about two-and-a-half kilometers into the race. For the next three kilometers Piekarewicz felt somewhat insecure about her lead.

"You never know who's behind you, and I kept hearing footsteps and thinking it was her," said Piekarewicz. "Then around four miles someone called out, 'You're the first woman. By a lot!'"


After that Piekarewicz raced confidently home to the women's title.


Meanwhile, two-time Springtime women's champ Sheryl Rosen had set her sights on Churchill.


"I just slowly gained on her," said Rosen. "I passed her right at the turn onto Lafayette."

That was 600 meters from the finish line. Rosen made the most of that remaining distance, placing second in the women's standings and 25th overall in 40:30. Churchill was the third female finisher, 29th overall in 40:38.

Nicholas Loffer won the Springtime 5K in 18:42, finishing almost 170 meters ahead of runner-up Josh Cartwright. Cartwright's time was 19:21. Donald Kunish was the fastest master runner in the 5K, placing third overall in 19:26.

Megan Churchill outkicked Kristy Kalich 21:53 to 21:54 for the 5K women's title, the two runners placing twelfth and thirteenth overall. Paige Churchill was the third female finisher, coming in sixteenth overall in 23:00.


In spite of a spring storm that drenched the city the night before the race, 942 athletes showed up Saturday morning to finish the Springtime 10K. 426 finished the 5K race, and another 58 completed the kids' mile. All three races were chip-timed by Gulf Winds Track Club.

No first-time jitters for Kaiser or Churchill in the Thomasville Road Baptist Church 10K

Saturday morning, 5 March 2016 wasn't the first time that Nate Kaiser had raced the annual Thomasville Road Baptist Church 10K. In 2013 Kaiser had placed second to Chris Lake in the 6.2-mile race. However, Kaiser's performance in the 2016 10K was faster, a 34:18, and it earned him his first Thomasville Road Baptist Church Road Race win. For Swift Creek Middle School cross country runner Alyson Churchill the race was her first 10K ever, but she debuted at the distance with a 40:16, taking the women's title and placing sixteenth overall.


The eleventh-annual race started and finished in the parking lot of the church. Vince Molosky, who had won the race in 2007 and 2010, set the early pace. Donalsonville, Georgia master runner Myles Gibson was right on his heels. Somewhat farther back, Nate Kaiser followed them patiently.


"I was just taking it easy," said Kaiser.


It wasn't easy enough for Gibson, who fell off the pace somewhere during the second kilometer. After three kilometers Molosky similarly started to fade.


"Just after the second mile he seemed to slow down," said Kaiser. "We went around a corner and then I was in the lead. He was there and then he wasn't."

Kaiser pushed for home, building up a lead of more than 300 meters on the way to his 34:18 win. Master runner Bryan Koon overtook Molosky to finish runner-up in 35:30. Molosky ended the race third in 35:46, just ahead of the 35:55 posted by fourth-place finisher Zach DeVeau.


Alyson Churchill has a varied racing resume that includes 5K road races, two-mile cross country runs, and trail races of up to five miles. The day before the Thomasville Road Baptist Church Road Race, she had won a 1600-meter and a 3200-meter track race. Churchill had never raced anything as long as a 10K before, though.


"We've been training at the Greenway," explained Churchill. "I've been running longer distances so I thought I'd try it in a race."


"I liked it a lot," she concluded.

There's nothing not to like about winning, and Churchill won the female division handily, finishing nearly 300 meters ahead of the next woman. Only two other women have run faster than Churchill's 40:16 in the eleven-year history of the race--Lisa Johnson (40:04) and two-time winner Sheryl Rosen (38:40).


Anna Busby was second to Churchill in the women's standings, coming in 24th overall in 41:25. Jillian Heddaeus and Brittney Barnes were the next two women in the race, 35th overall in 43:50 and 38th overall in 44:26. Angela Dempsey was the top woman master and eighth female finisher, 54th overall in 47:16.

Leading from start to finish, master runner Mickey Moore won the 5K race that was run concurrently with the 10K, running 18:25. However, Moore was so far ahead that the runners trailing him couldn't see him. Most if not all of them missed a critical turn and ended up running farther than the posted distance, closer to six kilometers than to five. Aaron Taylor was one of the unfortunates, finishing runner-up in 24:57. Megan Churchill took the women's title, coming in seventh overall in 27:17. Her younger sister, Paige Churchill, was second in the women's standings and eighth overall in 27:26. Sharon Crews was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, seventeenth overall in 29:16.

250 athletes finished the 10K and 254 the 5K. Tallahassee, Florida's Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed both races.
