Davila and Busby are the new royalty at the Smoothie King 5K

Dan Butzin began his reign as the Valdosta, Georgia Smoothie King 5K champion in 2015, winning the fifteenth annual race in 19:22. He retained his crown in 2016 with a 19:15 victory. But at the seventeenth annual event on Saturday morning, 11 March 2017, Valdosta runner Gene Davila unseated Butzin, ruling the Smoothie King 5K field with a winning 19:36. Anna Busby took the women's title in 19:51, placing second overall. Busby's time was the fastest time recorded by a woman in the race since 2007, when Melissa Daugherty went 19:33.


Butzin was second in the men's standings, finishing third overall in 20:25. Justin Naylor of Hahira, Georgia was the fastest master runner in the race, coming in fourth overall in 22:35. Carlisle, Pennsylvania master runner Mark West took fifth in 23:04.


Pollyanna Bass of Pavo, Georgia was the first woman master and second female finisher, placing sixth overall in 23:10. Vanessa Spry of Valdosta was third in the women's standings and eighth overall in 24:12.


53 athletes finished the 2017 Smoothie King 5K, while another 14 completed a one-mile fun run. Hosted by the Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority, the event was known as the Azalea Festival 5K from 2001 to 2014 before gaining a title sponsor in 2015. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the 2017 races and provided finish line services.

Mizereck and Sherron tail none on the trails

"I just love coming in second in half marathons," quipped Zach DeVeau. "This is the third one where I've come in second."


The third one was the Tails and Trails Half Marathon on Saturday morning, 7 May 2016, and this time DeVeau had finished runner-up to Matt Mizereck of Capital City Runners. Mizereck won the race by over a mile, covering 13.1 miles of roots, hills, and trails in 1:19:49. Florida State University economics professor Katie Sherron won the women's title, placing 21st overall in 1:45:20. 178 athletes finished the half marathon.

An annual event benefiting the Tallahassee-Leon County Animal Shelter Foundation, the Tails and Trails had started off in 2002 as the Furry Scurry 5K. By 2016 the name had changed and the event had grown to include four different races. Add a few throws and jumps and you could almost mistake the Tails and Trails for a track meet. That is, you could if it weren't for the courses, which no one could confuse with a track. Although the races all start on the road in front of the animal shelter, the competitors soon find themselves on the paths of Tom Brown Park and the Lafayette Heritage Trail, going up and down the hills surrounding Lake Lafayette.


The half marathon was only added to the program in 2015, but it was the first race on the schedule in 2016. Mizereck was soon in the lead. Not much later he was out of sight. His rivals didn't catch another glimpse of him till he was on his way back, past the halfway turnaround on the far side of the Canopy Greenway Bridge. While DeVeau couldn't challenge Mizereck, DeVeau himself was unchallenged by the other runners in the field. Behind him, though, master runners Myles Gibson and Geb Kiros were in a tight race for third. Mizereck got the win in 1:19:49, while DeVeau took second in 1:25:57. Gibson put some ground on Kiros late in the race to take third, 1:26:33 to 1:27:05.

Early in the race, the women's competition was closer than the men's, with Katie Sherron and Nancy Stedman sharing the lead through three miles.


"Nancy and I talked before the race, so we knew we were both shooting for about 1:50," explained Sherron.


Both runners more than met that goal, but especially Sherron. Leaving Stedman behind after three miles, Sherron captured the women's crown in 1:45:20. Stedman was the second female finisher and first woman master, placing 25th overall in 1:48:07. Allison Born was third in the women's standings, coming in 35th overall in 1:54:46.

"I never know how I'm going to be feeling these days," said Sherron after the race. That's understandable; she's currently six months pregnant. From the win, we'll have to conclude that she was feeling well.


"It was really nice weather," said Sherron. "Just beautiful in the shade."

After earning a degree in mathematics and a commission in the United States Navy, Stanley Linton ended his Florida State University running career during the spring of 2016. However, he certainly wasn't through with his running career in general. Ensign Linton blazed a 37:45 to win the Tails and Trail 10K, finishing more than 800 meters ahead of the next runner. Jim Halley was runner-up in the 6.2-mile race with a 41:09. Bill McNulty was the top master runner and third overall with a 43:54.

Anna Busby of Capital City Runners was the first woman in the 10K, coming in sixth overall in 45:48. Melanie Leitman was second in the women's standings and ninth overall in 48:01. Jill Sweeny was the third woman finisher, sixteenth overall in 50:38. Monica Judd was the top woman master and fourth female finisher, nineteenth overall in 51:38.


191 athletes completed the Tails and Trails 10K.

Too far ahead to be caught but too close to be comfortable, Peter Van Brussel won the Tails and Trails 5K race over Drew Farrington, 18:20 to 18:30. Lincoln High senior Teddy Feracho was third in 20:15.


Brittney Barnes was the women's champ in the 3.1-mile race, finishing fifth overall in 20:50. Katie Sack was runner-up for the women and eleventh overall in 22:45. Kenya Rich was the fastest master runner in the race and the third female finisher, placing 26th overall in 24:33.


A record 562 athletes finished the 5K, while another 55 went the distance in the one-mile fun run. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed all four races.

Schmidt and Busby add Bainbridge to their collection of half marathon wins

Bainbridge, Georgia is just north of the Florida-Georgia border, so the annual Bainbridge Half Marathon attracts more than a few Florida runner, especially from nearby Tallahassee. In fact there were enough interlopers from the Sunshine State that Florida runners won the first three races. Tallahassee's Chris Lake still owns the course record. Finally, in 2015 Myles Gibson of Donalsonville, Georgia won the 13.1-mile run, keeping the title in the Peach State. But on Saturday morning, 19 March 2016, Gibson didn't succeed in defending that title from Roger Schmidt, yet another Florida athlete. Schmidt, of Tallahassee's Capital City Runners, won the race in 1:16:45, crossing the finish line with a lead of more than a mile. Valdosta, Georgia resident Anna Busby was the first woman in the long race, coming in fifth overall in 1:32:27.


Gibson was the top master runner in the race, placing second overall in 1:23:57--more than two minutes better than the 1:26:20 he had posted in 2015. Matthew Phillips of Crawfordville, Florida finished third in 1:30:33.


Tallahassee runner Jillian Heddaeus was the women's runner-up, placing eleventh overall in 1:40:30. Grace Kennedy was third in the women's standings, nineteenth overall in 1:52:02. Darla Castoro was the top woman master and sixth female finisher, 23rd overall in 1:54:41.


It wasn't the first 13.1-mile race in South Georgia for Roger Schmidt and Anna Busby. Just three weeks earlier the duo had raced the Hospice Half Marathon in Dasher, Georgia, with Schmidt winning the men's division and Busby the women's. It could get to be a habit. But even though there is another half marathon in Tifton, Georgia on 2 April 2016, Busby plans to race the Springtime 10K in Tallahassee that day, and Schmidt will be in his final preparations for the Boston Marathon on 18 April 2016.


95 athletes finished the 2016 Bainbridge Half Marathon. Another 29 completed a concurrently run 5K road race. Poncherello Leonard, a junior on the Bainbridge High cross country team, won the 3.1-mile race in 18:20. Bainbridge High sophomore cross country runner Uriyah Davis was first in the women's standings, placing sixth overall in 23:30. Miles and Minutes, LLC, timed both races.

Schmidt and Busby take the Hospice Half titles home to Tallahassee

After a four-year run of annual races from 2011 to 2014, the Hospice Half Marathon was absent from the South Georgia racing calendar in 2015. But the race returned to Dasher, Georgia on Saturday morning, 27 February 2016, and Roger Schmidt of Capital City Runners starred in the comeback. The Tallahassee, Florida athlete took three-and-a-half minutes off the event record, winning the 13.1-mile race in 1:17:14. Making it a Tallahassee sweep, Anna Busby won the women's title, finishing tenth overall with a 1:32:31.


Roger Schmidt was the first athlete to break 80:00 at the Hospice Half Marathon, but less than three minutes after he crossed the finish line he was no longer the Dasher race's only sub-80:00 performer. Nick Graves, a Georgia Tech computer science student, ran 1:19:52, placing second. Another Atlanta-based runner, Georgia Tech student Gautam Sowda, took third in 1:21:00. Jeremy Storey of Valdosta, Georgia was the top master in the race, placing twelfth overall in 1:33:45.


Sarah Ecker was second in the women's standings, finishing eighteenth overall in 1:43:43, while Angela Rao was third on the women's side, ninteenth overall in 1:47:23. Valdosta's Martha Mazurkiewicz was the top woman master and fourth female finisher, coming in 24th overall in 1:51:17.


56 athletes finished the 2016 Hospice Half Marathon. The race benefits the patients and families cared for by Hospice of South Georgia and the Langdale Hospice House. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia provided timing and finish line services.

Anna Busby gets a Women's Distance Fest win in the Indianhead hills

On Saturday morning, 20 September 2014, Anna Busby of Capital City Runners flashed across the finish line of a 5K race in Indianhead Acres, first in 20:45. A minute later Roger Schmidt, another Capital City Runners athlete, crossed the same finish line in 16:45, also first. In Tallahassee, that could only happen at Gulf Winds Track Club's Women's Distance Festival, a race where the women start in their own wave five minutes before the men's wave starts.


At Tallahassee's 33rd annual Women's Distance Festival 5K, the women started just after 8:00 AM, heading north on East Indianhead Drive. 600 meters up the road the runners turned west onto Apakin Nene. Three FSU students led the race at that first corner--Bridget Reid, Claire Igoe, and Julia Corley. Just a few steps behind them was Anna Busby. Corley fell off the pace early, but Busby continued to stalk Reid and Igoe. At about the three kilometer mark, Busby pulled even with the leaders.


"I was cruising behind those girls and I kept expecting them to move up more," said Busby. "I finally decided, 'okay, I'm just going to go.'"


A kilometer from the finish, Busby went. Taking the lead, she never got far ahead of Reid and Igoe, but it was far enough. Busby won the race in 20:45, while Reid edged Igoe for second, 20:47 to 20:48. Julia Corley held off Laura McDermott to take fourth place, 21:38 to 21:41.


I just wanted to go sub 21:00 today and see where I was at," said Busby.


Mission accomplished.


Tiffany Roddenberry was sixth in the women's standings, running 21:44. Roger Schmidt finished immediately after Roddenberry. Even though he had started five minutes behind the women's wave, Schmidt had overtaken 97 of the 103 female finishers, taking the men's title in 16:45. Nate Kaiser set the early pace for the men. Schmidt followed him out, but soon took over. By late in the race Schmidt was only running against the clock.


"I made a strong push in front of Hartsfield School before the last downhill," said Schmidt. "Then around the last corner I really slammed it home."


It was Schmidt's second win in two weeks; he had also won the Sickle Cell 5K the previous Saturday. Nate Kaiser was runner-up in 17:06, and Peter Van Brussel placed third in 18:03. "Marathon Jack" McDermott was fourth in 18:34. Wakulla High cross-country runner Lane Williams finished fifth in 18:41.


Portions of the Women's Distance Festival proceeds were earmarked for the Children's Center at TMH and the Florida State women's cross-country team.
