O'Kelley, Rosen make a little Flash 12K history in Saint Marks

“How far back is he?” called out Chris O’Kelley.

O’Kelley was headed south on the Saint Marks Trail, leading Gulf Winds Track Club’s Flash 12K. The next runner, Michael Rhodes, was far back indeed, about 200 meters behind with less than three kilometers left in the race. On the way to the finish line at San Marcos de Apalache State Park, O’Kelley widened that gap to nearly 400 meters, winning the race in 44:20.

It was the 30th annual Flash 12K that Saturday morning, 17 February 2018, in Saint Marks, Florida. In a town like Saint Marks, with history going back to the days of Spanish Florida, you’d expect the race to be much older. It would be satisfying, for instance, to learn that the race started in 1718, when the Spanish military commandant stationed at San Marcos de Apalache ordered his men to race tres legua as a display of their fitness for combat. Or perhaps the Flash 12K could trace its lineage to 1818, when Andrew Jackson celebrated his occupation of Saint Marks with a 60-furlong footrace and the execution by hanging of two British citizens, with maybe a few public floggings thrown in. Or maybe the race began in 1838 as recreation for workers on the Saint Marks Railroad, or in 1863 to settle a bet among troops stationed at Fort Ward.

Michael Rhodes
Michael Rhodes

None of those is true. The first Flash 12K wasn’t even in Saint Marks. Joe Dexter began the event in Chaires, Florida in 1989. By 2005 the traffic around Chaires had increased enough that Dexter moved the race to Woodville and the Saint Marks Trail. In 2011 construction on the Saint Marks Trail near Woodville made the course unuseable. Mark Priddy, having taken over as race director from Dexter, moved the Flash 12K to Saint Marks. The Flash was in Saint Marks for the eighth time in 2018 when a new race director, Keith Rowe, gave the runners the command to start just after 8:30 AM.

Travis Parks, Mickey Moore

Michael Rhodes, a master runner from Perry, Florida, took the lead in the 12K near the end of the first kilometer. Chris O’Kelley of Tallahassee, Florida moved into second. Rhodes opened a gap initially, but O’Kelley overtook him before the four-kilometer mark. It was Kelley’s race after that, and he ran home in a winning 44:20. Rhodes took second in 45:39. Behind the first two finishers, Travis Parks and Mickey Moore had been battling for third for almost the entire race. Parks, a Tallahassee Community College cross-country runner, pulled away with a final effort, taking third in 46:58. Moore, a Tallahassee master runner, was fourth in 47:05.

Sheryl Rosen

It was O’Kelley’s first Flash 12K win. On the women’s side, though, Tallahassee lawyer Sheryl Rosen grabbed her fourth title, placing fifth overall in 48:20. Rosen had been the women’s champion of the Flash 12K for the first time in in 2010, back on the Woodville course. Her next three wins--2013, 2015, and 2018--had come in Saint Marks. Tsige Tadesse was the first woman master in the Flash 12K and second to Rosen in the women's standings, twentieth overall in 56:14. Nazarae Holcombe was the third woman and 25th overall in 57:49.

Houge was still ahead at the 3K mark, the turnaround on the out-and-back course, ten seconds up on on the next runner, 2017 Flash 6K champion Geb Kiros. On the return trip, Kiros made up that ten seconds and then some, passing Houge and winning the race in 22:53. Houge was second in 22:57. Michael Martinez, the 2013 Flash 6K champion, was third in 24:34.

Kiros and Terry make triumphant returns to the Deer Run

On Saturday morning, 4 November 2017, Geb Kiros was at Deerlake Middle School north of Tallahassee. He was there for the second year in a row to race the annual Deer Run 5K. And for the second year in a row, the Florida A & M University biostatistics professor won the 3.1-mile race. This time the master runner covered the course in 18:33. Alyssa Terry had also run the race in 2016, finishing eighth in the women's standings. In 2017, Terry took the Deer Run women's title, placing seventh overall in 20:42.

Kiros and Terry take the Trailblazer

Saturday, 23 February 2013, was the date of DeSoto Trail Elementary School's first annual Trailblazer 5K Run For Literacy. It rained just enough that morning for the streets to be wet during the race. Tad David was there. He won the race.

Saturday, 25 February 2017, was the date of DeSoto Trail Elementary School's fifth annual Trailblazer 5K Run For Literacy. It rained just enough that morning for the streets to be wet during the race. Tad David was there. But this time, so was Florida A & M University Biostatistics professor Geb Kiros, and Kiros won the race in 18:33. Alyssa Terry was the women's champ, placing eighth overall in 22:01.

The race started from the Tallahassee, Florida school at 8:30 AM. The runners charged into the neighborhood next to the school, with Geb Kiros leading that charge. By the end of the first mile Kiros was over half a minute ahead of the next runner, Gary Johnston. Tad David was a few more steps back. A light rain spattered the runners.

"The fresh asphalt with some rain in the second mile certainly had an effect," commented Kiros.

Nevertheless Kiros continued to pull away from the field, going on to an 18:33 win. Tad David overtook Gary Johnston during the final mile to take second in 20:18, while Johnston was third in 20:35.

Kiros had run the Trailblazer 5K before in 2015; this was his second time competing in the event. For Alyssa Terry, though, it was her first Trailblazer 5K.

"I moved here a year-and-a-half ago," explained Terry. "This is my second year of running Gulf Winds Track Club events. I never know where I'm running in these races."

Lack of familiarity with the area was no handicap to Terry in the Trailblazer 5K. She finished about 600 meters ahead of the next woman in the race.

"I thought it would be a nice course to run," Terry said about her decision to race the Trailblazer. "It was a nice course. I ran my PR today."

Loranne Ausley was the first woman master and second female finisher in the race, coming in 25th overall in 24:57. Master runner Heather Conn was third in the women's standings and 27th overall in 25:04.

212 athletes finished the 2017 Trailblazer 5K. After the race, another 137 finished a one-mile fun run. Proceeds of the race go to support the media center at DeSoto Trail Elementary School. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.

Kiros and Rosen take the TMH For Life Challenge

Racing for the first time in the new year, Tallahassee master runner Geb Kiros won the third annual TMH For Life Challenge Winter 5K on Saturday morning, 7 January 2017. The Florida A & M University biostatistics professor covered the 3.1-mile course through the streets of Tallahassee in 18:07, finishing close to sixty yards ahead of the next runner. Sheryl Rosen, the women’s champ at the race in 2015, added another TMH For Life title to her collection, winning the women’s competition in 19:35. Rosen finished fifth overall.

Geb Kiros
Geb Kiros

It was a cold morning, thanks to one of those winter storms that the Weather Channel likes to name. The fringes of the system had dropped heavy rain on the city overnight. By race time the rain had stopped, but the temperatures were just over freezing. Gusts of wind made it feel even colder.

“Windy!” summarized Sheryl Rosen.

Sheryl Rosen
Sheryl Rosen

“Extreme weather!” said meteorologist Ryan Truchelut, who won the race in 2015. “I like it cold, though. I run more efficiently at low temperatures. I don’t get really cold till it’s down to fifteen degrees. We’d get weather like that in New Jersey.”

Which could explain why after studying at Princeton, Truchelut chose Florida State for his doctoral program.

Sunny Tallahassee wasn’t living up to its reputation when the race started just after 8:45 AM. Kiros dashed out ahead quickly, with Truchelut and Tallahassee Community College cross-country coach Gary Droze close behind. After two years of starting on Medical Drive, a course change had moved the start to Miccosukee Road. However, the middle mile of the race still took the runners through the well-named Miccosukee Hills neighborhood.

Gary Droze, Ryan Truchelut
Gary Droze and Ryan Truchelut

“That would be a good place to run a downhill mile,” said Droze. “I was looking for an elevator coming back up, though.”

Droze and Truchelut kept Kiros in sight through Miccosukee Hills. Back on Miccosukee Road, racing toward the finish on Surgeons Drive, the two narrowed Kiros’ lead a bit as they dueled for second. No one was catching the professor, though, and Kiros crossed the finish line unchallenged in 18:07. Behind him, Droze and Truchelut fought for the runner-up spot.

“I thought I could lose him on the hills,” said Droze. “But he held on and went by me at the end.”

Krista Killius
Krista Killius

Truchelut accelerated on the home stretch to take second in 18:19, while Droze was third in 18:23. Mickey Moore, the race winner in 2016, finished fourth in 19:13.

Sheryl Rosen was fifth overall in 19:35, taking the women's title for the second time in three years. Krista Killius of Tallahassee was the top woman master and second female finisher, placing ninth overall in 23:55. Tallahassee master runner Tsige Tadesse was third in the women's standings and thirteenth overall in 24:17.

141 athletes finished the 2017 TMH For Life Challenge Winter 5K. DRC Sports, Inc., of Inverness, Florida chip timed the race.

Master runners Kiros and Judd show their mastery at the Habitat 5K

"Did I break the course record?" asked Geb Kiros. "My goal was to break the record."

The Florida A & M University biostatistics professor had met his goal. In winning the third annual Big Bend Habitat For Humanity 5K, Kiros had run 17:58, edging aside the old record of 17:59 run by Grady Smith at the 2015 race. Towards the end of the Tallahassee, Florida 5K, Kiros had some concerns about making the mark.

"There were four people in the way, walking on the road between me and the finish line," said Kiros.

Geb Kiros
Geb Kiros

The professor negotiated those obstacles successfully. Meanwhile, Kiros had no concerns from the competition that Saturday morning. Immediately after the race started at 8:30 AM on 12 November 2016, Kiros was ahead of the field. For the entire 3.1-mile route through the Centerville Conservation Community he ran practically alone, ultimately winning the race by almost 700 meters. Master runner Gary Johnston was second in 20:48, Erik Andersen held off a late-race challenge from eleven-year-old Nate Thompson to take third, 21:18 to 21:20.

Tallahassee master runner Monica Judd took the women's title, placing ninth overall in 23:07. Krista Killius had raced with Judd for the first kilometer of the race, but Judd opened a gap on Killius while climbing a hill near the end of the second kilometer.

"I was just trying to maintain pace on the uphill," said Judd. "And breathe!"

After that Judd continued to steadily pull away from Killius for the rest of race. Killius finished second in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 23:40. Nazarae Rodriguez was the third female finisher, placing fifteenth overall in 25:02

80 athletes finished the Tallahassee Board of Realtors' 2016 Big Bend Habitat For Humanity 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip timed the race.

Kiros and Sherron hoof it at the Deer Run

It was a close finish for the leaders of the Deer Run 5K on Saturday morning, 5 November 2016. Little more than 60 meters separated the first runner from the fourth at the end of the race, but the fastest of those four was master runner Geb Kiros. The Florida A & M University professor won the 3.1-mile race through the Killearn Lakes community of Tallahassee, Florida in 17:44. A Florida State University professor, Katie Sherron, took the Deer Run women's title, placing ninth overall in 19:52.

Ryan Truchelut, Zach DeVeau, and Jim Halley cascaded across the finish line after Kiros. Truchelut was second in 17:51, DeVeau third in 17:55, and Halley fourth in 17:58.

Katie Sherron's 19:52 was the fastest Deer Run time by a woman since Allison Eagen ran 19:36 in the 2010 race. Just three days after racing the Rex Cleveland Magic Mile, Katie Sack was runner-up in the women's standings and thirteenth overall in 20:52. Jillian Heddaeus was the third woman and seventeenth overall in 21:13, while Nikky Manausa was the fourth woman and twentieth overall in 21:28. Paula O'Neill was the top woman master and fifth female finisher, 26th overall in 22:05.

233 athletes finished the 2016 Deer Run 5K, with another 172 completing a one-mile fun run.

Kiros and Reilly add their names to Prefontaine 5K history

West of Tallahassee, Florida, the Silver Lake Recreation Area became the main Off-Highway Vehicle trail head for the Apalachicola National Forest. Silver Lake still includes a nature trail, picnic tables, a swimming beach, and two scenic ponds. At one time the Recreation Area included a campground, but that has been closed for quite a few years now. A Girl Scout camp and a Boy Scout camp were once nearby, but those are also gone now. Silver Lake was developed for recreation in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, but earlier settlers must have been aware of the area. It couldn't have been unknown to the even earlier Native Americans, either. Before that it was probably a popular watering hole for mastodons and other prehistoric fauna. But since 1976, Silver Lake has been the home of Gulf Winds Track Club's annual Salute To Prefontaine 5K. That event returned to Silver Lake for the 41st time on Saturday morning, 24 September 2016.

Geb Kiros
Geb Kiros

Silver Lake has a history, but the Prefontaine Forest 5K has acquired a history over the years. Several of the athletes whose performances made that history were on the starting line for the 2016 race. 2015 champion Peter Van Brussel was racing, and so was 2010 winner Jay Wallace and 2002 winner David Yon. Ten-time Prefontaine 5K champion Gary Droze was also starting that morning. But with no respect for history, Geb Kiros dashed out into the lead right after the start of the race. The Florida A & M University biostatistics professor was twenty meters ahead when the runners disappeared into the forest near the 400-meter mark.

The Prefontaine Forest 5K has never been much of an event for spectators. In most years the runners vanished into the woods right after the start, only to be seen again right before the finish. Their struggles with sand, hills, and tree roots went unwitnessed, as did their unscheduled encounters with wildlife. In the 2016 race, the athletes went twice around a 2500-meter loop, so onlookers at least caught a glimpse of the runners at halfway before the competition returned to the forest. What they saw was that master runner Kiros had lengthened his lead and was more than 100 meters ahead of Gary Droze, the next runner.

Gary Droze
Gary Droze

That didn't change during the second lap. When Kiros emerged from the forest he was still more than 100 meters ahead and maintained that margin to the finish line, winning in 18:38. Droze was second in 19:05 and Jay Wallace third in 19:21. Zach DeVeau moved up three places on the second lap to take fourth in 19:39. Jim Halley was fifth in 19:47 and defending champ Peter Van Brussel placed sixth in 19:53.

In the women's competition Samantha Reilly set the early pace, getting 80 meters ahead on the first lap then maintaining that lead for the rest of the race. Reilly crossed the finish line with the women's title, placing 22nd overall. It was the best 5K time yet for Reilly, a member of the Tallahassee Community College Women's Cross Country team, and the fastest 5K ever by anyone on her team. Emily Smith was runner-up in the women's standings, 24th overall in 23:22. Another TCC Eagle, Mia Widerkehr, was third in the women's division, placing 26th overall in 23:28. TCC's Monet Madeux was the fourth woman and 35th overall in 24:44. Monica Judd was the top woman master and sixth female finisher, 39th overall in 24:47.

162 athletes finished the challenging 3.1-mile course through the Apalachicola National Forest. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.

Successful Sickle Cell 5K returns for Kiros and Barnes

In 2014, Florida A & M University biostatistics professor Geb Kiros raced the Sickle Cell 5K and ran 18:43, placing fourth. On Saturday morning, 10 September 2016, Kiros was back in the Jake Gaither neighborhood of Tallahassee, Florida for the 35th annual Sickle Cell 5K. This time Kiros ran over a minute faster, winning the race in 17:41. Brittney Barnes made her own return to the race; after finishing as the top woman in the 2015 Sickle Cell 5K, Barnes took a second women's title in the 2016 event, placing fifth overall in 20:05.

Geb Kiros
Geb Kiros

The race started just after 8:30 AM in front of the Jake Gaither Community Center, heading east on Bragg Drive. Geb Kiros was soon setting the pace for the field, and by the two-kilometer mark he had a 100-meter lead on the second-place runner, Trey Edwards. Eric Godin was just a few steps farther back, and caught Edwards early in the second half of the race. There was no catching Kiros, though. The Tallahassee master runner had widened his lead to nearly 200 meters by the time he crossed the finish line back at the Jake Gaither Community Center, first in 17:41. Godin took second in 18:21, and Edwards was third in 18:45.

Brittney Barnes
Brittney Barnes

In the women's competition Brittney Barnes had an even wider winning margin, finishing well over 600 meters ahead of the next woman. Barnes led from the start and was never challenged during the 20:05 it took her to reach the finish line. Tallahassee master runner Lyssa Oberkreser overtook Michelle Hadden during the final kilometer of the race to take the women's runner-up spot in 23:08, placing tenth overall. Close behind, Hadden was third in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 23:10.

227 athletes finished the 2016 Sickle Cell 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee chip-timed the race. The event is an annual benefit of the Sickle Cell Foundation, Inc.
