Howling good runs for Tony Guillen and Jamila Allen at the Wolf Dash

Bradfordville, Florida is a village north of Tallahassee, known in law as an "unincorporated area," and to the United States Geological Survey as a "populated place." On Saturday, 6 April 2019, you'd also have to call Bradfordville a center of running. On the north side of Bradfordville, Chiles High School hosted hundreds of athletes representing dozens of schools from three different states at their twentieth annual Capital City Track and Field Classic. However, athletics at Chiles opened that morning with the second annual Wolf Dash 5K (which is what the school called its seventh annual March of Dimes fundraising run).


Tallahassee master runner Tony Guillen won the 2019 Wolf Dash, covering the new, out-and-back 5K course in 19:37. Lucas Mauch, an eighth-grader on the Maclay School cross-country team, claimed the runner-up spot with a 20:18. Jason Graham, winner of the race in 2016, took third in 20:40.


Jamila Allen took the women's title in the 5K, placing fifth overall in 21:06. Jillian Heddaeus was second in the women's standings, coming in ninth overall in 22:14. Kristen Knapp was the first woman master and third female finisher, eighteenth overall in 26:06.


66 athletes finished the 2019 Wolf Dash 5K. Miles & Minutes, LLC, of Tallahassee timed the race.

Gary Droze repeats at the Verity Health 5K

Like many unincorporated areas, there isn't much to give Bradfordville, Florida an identity. There's the Bradford family cemetery. There have been Bradfordville schools in the past and there are still Bradfordville churches. As you drive north from Tallahassee on US 319, a sign tells you that you are entering Bradfordville. As the area has gotten caught up in Tallahassee's commercial sprawl, a Bradfordville Center filled with shops. As there has been during three different centuries, there's still a Bradfordville Road.

Nevertheless, Bradfordville was the destination of dozens of athletes on Saturday, 19 January 2019--the morning of the second annual Verity Health 5K.
Master runner Gary Droze won the race for the second year straight, posting a winning time of 18:43. Jamila Allen was the first woman in the race, placing fourth overall in 21:06.


Noah Deem, a sixth-grader on the Community Leadership Academy cross-country team, finished second to Droze in 19:35. Another cross-country runner, Maclay School eighth-grader Lucas Mauch, ran 20:46 for third.


Kiera Hanselman finished runner-up in the women's standings, placing eleventh overall in 24:43. Ely Martin was the third woman and sixteenth overall in 26:12.


59 athletes finished the 2019 Verity Health 5K. Miles & Minutes, LLC, of Tallahassee, Florida timed the race.

Rhodes and Hernandez lead the pack at the Wolf Dash

In 2013 Chiles High School first hosted a 5K run at their Bradfordville, Florida campus to benefit the March of Dimes. March of Dimes races were held more or less annually after that, sometimes less than twelve months apart, sometimes more. Then, on Saturday morning, 3 February 2018, the Chiles High School Foundation staged a sixth March of Dimes 5K.


They called it the first annual Wolf Dash.


Well, it was the first of the races called the Wolf Dash.


First annual or sixth annual, Perry, Florida master runner Michael Rhodes edged Kurt Dietrich of Tallahassee, Florida for the win, 18:30 to 18:34. Owen Franklin, a seventh-grader on the Montford Middle School cross-country team, was third in 21:34.


Georgina Hernandez was the first woman in the race, placing twelfth overall in 26:05. Stacy Poage was the first woman master and second female finisher, fourteenth overall in 26:36. Renee Pharis edged nine-year-old Maddy Morris for the third spot in the women's standings, 28:11 to 28:14. Pharis and Morris finished nineteenth and twentieth overall.


57 athletes finished the 2018 Wolf Dash. Another 30 finished a one-mile fun run.

Ana Wallace of Chiles earns Gatorade Florida Girls Cross-Country Runner of the Year honors

During Florida's 2017 high school cross-country season, Ana Wallace was the FHSAA-3A girls' state champion, a Foot Locker finalist, and a Foot Locker All-American. Now she is also Gatorade Florida Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year. In a 29 January 2018 press release, Gatorade named Wallace as the 2017-2018 recipient of the annual award.

Wallace opened her senior year at Tallahassee, Florida's Chiles High by winning six races during the regular season, including the class 3A high school girls’ state championship. Since the girls’ state championship was first established in 1974, only six other Leon County athletes have won a girls’ title--Rosemary Desloge (1979) of Leon, Jessica Scafidi (1988, 1989, 1990) of Leon, Kathi Ward (1991, 1992) of Lincoln, Carly Thomas (2009) of Chiles, Rachel Givens (2012) of Chiles, and Alyson Churchill (2016) of Lincoln. Wallace’s win led the Chiles girls to the team title--the fifth by a Chiles girls’ team in the school’s history.


Wallace’s cross-country season didn’t end with the State Championship. Two weeks later she raced at the Foot Locker South Regional at McAlpine Creek Greenway Park in Charlotte, North Carolina. Running 17:28, Wallace qualified for the 39th annual Foot Locker National Cross-Country Championships at Balboa Park in San Diego, California. In qualifying, Wallace joins an elite group of Tallahassee girls who were Foot Locker finalists before her--Leon's Jessica Scafidi (1990), Lincoln's Kathi Ward (1991, 1992), and Chiles’ Lily Williams (2011).


A 4.0-GPA student at Chiles High, Wallace is the eighth different athlete named Gatorade Florida Girls Cross-Country Runner of the Year since the award was instituted in 2007.

Kiros and Terry make triumphant returns to the Deer Run

On Saturday morning, 4 November 2017, Geb Kiros was at Deerlake Middle School north of Tallahassee. He was there for the second year in a row to race the annual Deer Run 5K. And for the second year in a row, the Florida A & M University biostatistics professor won the 3.1-mile race. This time the master runner covered the course in 18:33. Alyssa Terry had also run the race in 2016, finishing eighth in the women's standings. In 2017, Terry took the Deer Run women's title, placing seventh overall in 20:42.

Behind Kiros, master runner Jonathan LaBarre was second in 19:01. Brad Busboom was the third male finisher in 19:19, and eleven-year-old Jackson Rowe, a sixth-grader on the Montford Middle School cross-country team, was fourth in 20:25.


Chiles High sophomore Emily Molen was the women's runner-up and ninth overall in 21:06. Maya Tang, a seventh-grader on the Deerlake Middle School cross-country team, was the third female and 21st overall in 22:45. Nicole Kelly, another seventh-grade cross-country runner from Deerlake, was the fourth woman and 25th overall in 23:21. Tsige Tadesse was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, 30th overall in 24:04.


211 athletes finished the 2017 Deer Run 5K and another 172 completed a one-mile fun run.

Graham and Oberkreser march double-time at March For Dimes 5K

North of Tallahassee, Florida along what used to the be Cairo Road is the village of Bradfordville. It was an agricultural community that took its name from the local Bradford family. Historians of athletics may be interested to know that one member of the family, Bob Bradford, was a member of the Florida State College track team back in 1902.


Neither Bob Bradford or any of his contemporaries would recognize Bradfordville today. The village was never incorporated and it has so far escaped annexation by the city of Tallahassee, but that hasn't kept the area from being developed. The Cairo Road has become Thomasville Road, a multi-lane behemoth also known as US 319. Killearn Lakes is just the largest of the subdivisions in the Bradfordville area. Commercial development includes the Bradfordville Center and Bannerman Crossing. The Bradford family cemetery is still in the village, but it's no longer a prominent landmark. It's a challenge to find it nowadays.


From the late 1880s to 1930 the children of Bradfordville were served by a one-room schoolhouse. The schoolhouse is still standing, but education in the area is handled at much larger structures, most prominently Chiles High School, attended by nearly 2,000 students on the north side of Bradfordville. On Saturday morning, 19 November 2016, Chiles High hosted the fifth annual March Of Dimes 5K.


Jason Graham won the 3.1-mile race in 19:57. Tyler Carver, a seventh-grader on the cross-country team at Deerlake Middle School, took second in 21:55.


School librarian Lyssa Oberkreser was the first woman and fastest master runner in the race, coming in third overall in 22:44. Caroline Cummings, a seventh-grader on the Montford Middle School cross-country team, was second in the women's standings and fourth overall in 23:08.


Master runner Jamie Carver was the top male master in the race, placing fifth overall in 23:28.

Kiros and Sherron hoof it at the Deer Run

It was a close finish for the leaders of the Deer Run 5K on Saturday morning, 5 November 2016. Little more than 60 meters separated the first runner from the fourth at the end of the race, but the fastest of those four was master runner Geb Kiros. The Florida A & M University professor won the 3.1-mile race through the Killearn Lakes community of Tallahassee, Florida in 17:44. A Florida State University professor, Katie Sherron, took the Deer Run women's title, placing ninth overall in 19:52.

Geb Kiros and Katie Sherron

Ryan Truchelut, Zach DeVeau, and Jim Halley cascaded across the finish line after Kiros. Truchelut was second in 17:51, DeVeau third in 17:55, and Halley fourth in 17:58.


Katie Sherron's 19:52 was the fastest Deer Run time by a woman since Allison Eagen ran 19:36 in the 2010 race. Just three days after racing the Rex Cleveland Magic Mile, Katie Sack was runner-up in the women's standings and thirteenth overall in 20:52. Jillian Heddaeus was the third woman and seventeenth overall in 21:13, while Nikky Manausa was the fourth woman and twentieth overall in 21:28. Paula O'Neill was the top woman master and fifth female finisher, 26th overall in 22:05.


233 athletes finished the 2016 Deer Run 5K, with another 172 completing a one-mile fun run.

Kiros and Eagen roll on the rolling hills of Killearn Lakes

"That was tough!" said Geb Kiros.


It was Saturday morning, 23 July 2016, and Kiros had just finished the Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare For Life Challenge Summer 5K. He may have found the race tough, but not tough enough that he wasn't able to score a win, running 18:15 and finishing almost 100 meters ahead of the next runner. Allison Eagen took the women's title, placing fourth overall in 19:45. 182 athletes finished the 3.1-mile race through the street of Killearn Lakes, just north of Tallahassee, Florida.

The race started at Deerlake Middle School just after 8:30 AM. The school is in the Killearn Lakes subdivision, but the runners soon learned that the neighborhood could have been more accurately called Killearn Hills. If there was a level stretch in the whole five kilometers, no one mentioned it. On the plus side, sunny spots on the course were as rare as flat ones. Almost the entire course was in the shade, and that counts as a good thing during a Tallahassee summer.


Donalsonville, Georgia's runner Myles Gibson led the field for most of the first kilometer, followed closely by Geb Kiros and Mickey Moore--a lead pack of three master runners. After that Kiros, a Florida A & M University biostatistics professor, took over. Mickey Moore, the president of Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare Foundation, also passed Gibson, but Kiros left everyone behind. The FAMU professor was first to the finish line back at the school, posting a winning time of 18:15. Moore took second in 18:36 and Gibson was third in 18:45.

The TMH For Life Challenge series of races started with a Winter 5K in January 2015, with races scheduled every quarter. However, the 2015 Summer 5K had been canceled due to inclement weather, so this year's race at Deerlake was the first Summer 5K on the circuit. It wasn't the first time runners had been on the course, though. The Summer 5K used the same route as the Deerlake Run For Education 5K, held each November since 2010.


"I ran that a few years ago," said Allison Eagen.


Eagen had done more than that. The Summer 5K women's champ had won the women's title at the 2010 Run For Education 5K, and still holds the women's record of 19:36 for the event. Eagen's familiarity with the course wasn't limited to that one race, though. She lives and runs in the neighborhood.

"This is pretty much the only place I train," said Eagen.


Not that she was seeking a home course advantage. "I was just looking for a race to see where I was at," said Eagen. "I had already decided to run this race before I knew where it was. It's only a mile from home. I warmed up on the way here."


Exercise physiologists can argue the specifics, but 19:45 in the July heat may be better effort than 19:36 in milder November conditions.

Kenya Rich was the top woman master in the race and the second female finisher, placing eighth overall in 22:33. Master runner Deborah Congdon was third in the women's standings and fourteenth overall in 24:28.


The 2016 TMH For Life Challenge Summer 5K was preceded in this year's race series by the Winter 5K on 9 January 2016 and the Spring 5K on 30 April 2016. The series concludes with the TMH For Life Fall 5K on 22 October 2016 at Canopy Oaks Elementary School.

Droze and Wilkey take the March of Dimes 5K

Chiles High School, north of Tallahassee, has hosted an annual 5K to benefit the March of Dimes each spring since 2013. Apparently, once a year just wasn't enough. So on Saturday morning, 21 November 2015, only eight months after the previous March of Dimes 5K, the Chiles High campus was the site of the fourth March of Dimes 5K.


Maclay School cross country coach Gary Droze got the win in 17:26, finishing about 90 meters ahead of runner-up Austin Dodson. Dodson, a senior on the Chiles High cross country team, ran 17:45. 2014 March of Dimes 5K champ Josh Cartwright was third in 19:27 and Thomas Stephens fourth in 19:40.


Montford Middle School cross-country runner Caitlin Wilkey was first in the women's standings. An eighth grader, Wilkey placed fifth overall in 22:01. Ten-year-old Layla Thompson was the second female finisher, coming in 14th overall in 24:20. Jane Jhanji took the third woman's spot, 21st overall in 26:46.


54 athletes finished the 3.1-mile race, with another 18 completing a one-mile fun run. All proceed of the event went to the March of Dimes campaign.

Kaus and Thompson triumph at the Deer Run

Racing through the streets of the Tallahassee, Florida community of Killearn Lake, Peter Kaus won the Deer Run 5K on Saturday morning, 7 November 2015. Kaus covered the USATF-certified 3.1-mile course in 18:48, finishing more than 400 meters ahead of the next runner. Ten-year-old Layla Thompson won the women's division of the annual race for the second year in a row, placing tenth overall in 22:59.


Lincoln High sophomore Franz Roeder finished runner-up in the Deer Run, running 20:31. Deerlake Middle School cross country runner Spencer Amsellem was third in 20:58. Florida State University engineering professor Juan Ordonez was the fastest master runner in the race, placing fourth overall in 21:27.


For Layla Thompson, it was her third women's division win on three consecutive Saturdays. She had also tallied victories at the Race For Readiness 5K on 31 October 2015 and the TMH For Life Challenge 5K on 24 October 2015. Not far behind Thompson, Deerlake Middle School cross country runner Lauren Cook was the second female finisher, eleventh overall in 23:10. Ten-year-old Sophie Harris was third in the women's standings, 14th overall in 24:28. Birgit Maier-Katkin was the top woman master in the race, the fourth female finisher and 20th overall in 25:10.


The 2015 Deer Run was hosted by the Deerlake Middle School Parent-Teacher Organization. 134 athletes finished the 5K.

Castagnaro and Brosnan win Chiles High's March of Dimes 5K

Even though it was the week before the school's 2015 Spring Break, during the second week of March Chiles High School in Bradfordville, Florida, was a focus of athletic competition. On Wednesday, 11 March 2015, the school was the site of the Leon County Middle School Relay Meet. On Friday, 13 March 2015, Chiles hosted its annual Frosh-Sophomore Track Meet. And even while Friday's contest was going on, outside the track you could already see the course markers for the race on Saturday morning, 14 March 2015--Chiles High's third annual March Of Dimes 5K.


Florida State University student Joey Castagnaro won the 3.1-mile race, edging master runner Michael Lynch 20:25 to 20:31. Castagnaro is a 2012 graduate of Holy Trinity Academy where he was a standout on the cross-country team. Jason Graham took third in 20:46.


Canadian master runner Mary Brosnan was the first female finisher, placing 14th overal in 25:18. Heather Wilkinson was runner-up in the women's standings, coming in 19th overall in 27:04. Leah Dienger was the third woman, 20th overall in 27:24.


43 athletes finished the race which, as in previous years, started from the Chiles High clock tower. The event is focused on raising funds and awareness for the March of Dimes.

Bartlett and Tucker lead the milers at Chiles

Maybe it's just a minority opinion that I hold, but I really believe that you can get so cold that it's painful. I know that was the case in Tallahassee, Florida, on Saturday afternoon, 28 February 2015. It was a cold, wet, and windy day at the Chiles High School track, and after a while it just hurt to be out there.


But you aren't much of a track fan if you won't endure some misery to see a few sections of the mile, and there were three sections of the 1600 that day at the 15th annual Chiles Track and Field Championships--one girls' section, and two boys' sections. If the weather had been like this at Oxford on 6 May 1954, Roger Bannister would have called off his attempt at a sub-4:00 mile. But even as the wind blew at Chiles, the races went on.


The girls ran first. Chiles juniors Alex Wallace and Emma Tucker set the pace for the field for the first three laps, blocking the wind for a lead pack of six runners that also included Buchholz senior Sarah Edens, Chiles frosh Ana Wallace, Chiles junior Juliana Krueger, and Maclay sophomore Caroline Willis. With 200 meters to go Willis bolted to the front and started her drive toward the finish line. As the lead pack stretched out, Tucker kept her sights on Willis. Tucker accelerated on the homestretch, overtaking Willis then charging across the finish line to a 5:25.68 win. Willis was second in 5:27.13, and Ana Wallace edged Alex Wallace for third, 5:29.78 to 5:29.91.

The first of the two boys' sections followed. Carrollton (Georgia) frosh Donald Sener led the field through a 74-second first lap, followed by an 80-second second lap. The pace lagged further on the third lap and Leon sophomore caught Sener with 400 meters to go. Foster ran wide on Sener's shoulder till the last 200, when the Leon runner surged ahead, grabbed the pole, and ran home to win the section in 5:07.89. Sener was second in 5:10.34, and Andrew Rakestraw of the Florida State University School placed third in the section with a 5:17.69.

The second section produced all the scoring in the event, though. Almost from the crack of the starting pistol, Chiles senior Avery Bartlett was out in front, setting the pace. It wasn't the torrid pace you might expect from the state champ at 800 meters and a 4:16.79 1600-meter man, however. Bartlett passed 400 at 70 and 800 at 2:19. The third lap was a bit quicker, but the final lap was when Bartlett took off. As the big senior blasted a 57-second fourth lap, fans scrambled to check their watches to see if Bartlett had a chance at Matt Mizereck's 2010 meet record, 4:24.10. The record would live another year; Bartlett crossed the line in 4:25.26. Chiles seniors Tyson Murray and Allan Hernandez placed second and third in 4:30.63 and 4:30.90.

Pool and Thompson bag Deer Run titles

North of Tallahassee, Florida, Killearn Lakes doesn't actually feature much in the way of lakes. There are a few ponds, and some of the houses are situated on a body of water large enough to be called a lake, Lake Iamonia. There isn't much open water in Lake Iamonia, though; it's so filled with weeds that if you flew overhead you'd think you were looking at a large prairie. During dry periods, the lake is a prairie. Real estate marketing being what it is, though, the community is still called "Killearn Lakes" and the major road is called "Deer Lake Road." There isn't a Deer Lake in the area, but there are plenty of white-tailed deer, enough deer that Deer Lake Road and Deerlake Middle School have names that are halfway appropriate. And enough deer that Deerlake Middle School's annual Deer Run 5K has an entirely appropriate name.


Rik Pool, a recent alumnus of the Bishop Moore High cross-country team, won the 2014 Deer Run 5K on Saturday morning, November 1, covering the 3.1-mile course in 19:05. At 20:04 Duane Evans of Crawfordville, Florida, was the runner-up and first master runner. 14-year-old Tallahassee runner Logan Venclauskas was third in 20:40.


Nine-year-old Layla Thompson was the top runner in the women's standings, placing eighth overall in 22:01. Tallahassee master runner Paula O'Neill was the second female finisher, coming in ninth overall in 22:14. Deerlake Middle School cross-country runner Emily Molen was third on the women's side, finishing 10th overall in 23:20.


91 athletes finished Deerlake Middle School's 2014 Deer Run 5K, while another 69 ran a one-mile fun run.

Galvez and White race around the Lakes

It was a Capital City Runners sweep at Deerlake United Methodist Church's second annual Run Around The Lakes 5K on Saturday morning, 13 September 2014. CCR's Gary Galvez ran the 3.1 miles around Tallahassee's Killearn Lakes neighborhood in 20:43, winning the second annual race. Less than three minutes later, CCR's Sarah White crossed the finish line in 23:35, placing third overall and taking top woman honors.


Between Galvez and White, Maclay School frosh cross-country runner Adam Dawoud finished runner-up in 21:45.


On the master runners' side, Tom Krick was the fastest male master,coming in seventh overall in 25:09. Jennifer Morrison was the first female master, finishing fourth in the women's standings and 14th overall in 27:02.


90 athletes finished the race, a benefit for the local and overseas missions of Deer Lake UMC. Timing and finish line services were provided by the Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee

Khosla leads the nation with a 4:06.45 1600

It took the nation's top time of the season to win the boys' 1600 at the FHSAA Region 1-3A championships. So a nation-leading 4:06.45 is exactly what Leon junior Sukhi Khosla ran in the Thursday evening race on 24 April 2014. Niceville senior Nick Morken was just a heartbeat back in 4:07.12. Chiles High hosted the meet on their track north of Tallahassee, Florida.


When the starting pistol fired, Khosla was already the Florida leader at the distance on the strength of the 4:13.02 he had run at the Bolles Bulldog Classic back on 7 March 2014. Morken had a 4:15.82 to his credit and was the defending state champion. So it was hardly surprising that Khosla went right to the front, or that Morken was right behind him. By the second lap the rest of the field was far behind and it was a two-man race, Khosla and Morken.


After sitting behind Khosla for 1400 meters, on the final turn Morken rolled up what little distance there was between them to position himself for a move on the homestretch. Khosla was ready for him, though. In spite of pacesetting the whole race, Khosla was far from exhausted, and answered Morken's move with a move of his own. The Leon junior's lead held as he ran home in a career-best 4:06.45.


Those weren't the only personal bests in the race. Morken's 4:07.12 was also a PR. Chiles junior Avery Bartlett (3rd, 4:16.79), Lee senior Rayford James (4th, 4:18.83), Chiles senior Sean Turner (5th, 4:21.31), and Orange Park senior Joshua Bigden (8th, 4:31.85) each ran their best 1600 times at Chiles that evening.
