Emily Golden wraps up her sixth straight Tift Invitational victory

Tift County High School724 high school and middle school athletes came to the Tifton, Georgia campus of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College on Saturday morning, 28 September 2019, to compete in one of the four races of the 18th annual Tift Invitational Cross-Country Meet. The Coffee High Trojans put three runners in the top ten of the high school girls' 5K to take the team title in that event, but it was Tift County senior Emily Golden who took individual honors, winning the race in 19:52. Lowndes High was the top team in the high school boys' 5K for the third time in five years, led by their ace, junior Alec Munger, who won the race in 17:09.

Competition opened at ABAC with the high school girls' 5K. You could argue that Emily Golden only visits Abraham Balwin to win races. Each August starting in 2014, Golden has won the women's title of the Run For Love 5K, held at ABAC. Golden also won her first Tift Invitational race that year, the middle school girls' 3200-meter run. She won that race again as an eighth-grader in 2015, then in 2016 she graduated to winning the high school girls' 5K. At the 2019 Invitational, Golden ran the Tift Invitational for the final time in her high school career, collecting a fourth-straight win in the 5K. Maybe she also drops by to take the SAT or something, but for the past six years her main business at ABAC has been winning.

Coffee High senior Abby Arnett was second in the high school girls' 5K with a 21:15. At 21:24, Brianna Zupko, a Worth County senior, was third in 21:24.

Arnett was just the first of three Coffee High runners in the top ten. The other two were sophomore Brayden Bailey (6th, 22:11) and frosh Kate Merritt (10th, 22:46). They were joined by Coffee scorers Zulmia Tapia (36th, 25:22) and Ellie Perkins (57th, 26:47), giving the Trojans 94 points and first place in a field of fifteen teams.

Lowndes High was a close second with 99 points, led by the seniors Tanija Turner (15th, 23:29) and Alexandra Sayre (16th, 23:33). Lee County placed third in the team standings with 109 points; their top runner was sophomore Emily Phillips, who finished fourth in 21:46.

The high school boys' 5K followed, the largest race of the morning. Alec Munger of Lowndes had placed third in the 2018 Tift Invitational; he improved on that to win the 2019 race in 17:09. Coffee High junior Cameron Watson took second behind Munger with a 17:23, another improvement--Watson had finished fourth in 2018. Westover senior Henry Plowden ran 17:38 for third; Plowden had won the race in 2017.

Munger had the company of three Lowndes teammates in the top ten--frosh Aaron Munger was sixth in 18:10, junior Cody Galloway was eighth in 18:19, and junior Andrew Caruana was ninth in 18:22. Once Lowndes junior Andrew Francis had crossed the finish line 22nd in 19:16, the Vikings had 46 points and the team title.

Starting with junior Seth Tomlinson (14th, 18:57), Lee County bunched five scorers between 18:57 and 19:15 to take second with 83 points. Perry was a close third in the seventeen-team field with 88 points, led by frosh Dylan Coleman (12th, 18:46).

Berrien County put two runner in the top ten--sxith-grader Brady Solomon (6th, 12:35) and eighth-grader John Carter (10th, 12:51)--but so did Seminole County--seventh-grader Matthew Smith (8th, 12:47) and sixth-grader Zach King (9th, 12:48)--setting up a fight for the team title. Paul Guyas and Isabel Davis defeat sand, snags, and the competition at the Prefontaine 5K

West of Tallahassee, Florida and just inside the Apalachicola National Forest, there's a spot on the map labeled "Andrew." Perhaps it was a village before the Great Depression. There's not much there now aside from the intersection of Aenon Church Road and Silver Lake Road. There's an Andrew Lake, but that pond is overshadowed by neighboring Silver Lake, where the United States Forestry Service maintains the Silver Lake Recreation Area. Nevertheless, once each year since 1976, on the cusp of autumn the Gulf Winds Track Club visits Andrew for the Salute To Prefontaine Forest 5K. Tallahassee master runner Paul Guyas won the 44th annual Prefontaine 5K on Saturday morning, 30 September 2019, with a 20:36. Isabel Davis, a seventh-grader at Cornerstone Learning Community, won the women's division, placing twelfth overall in 27:15.

Paul Guyas
Paul Guyas

The race started at 8:30 AM from the Silver Lake Recreation Area. The runners followed a two-lap course, each lap taking the field around both Silver Lake and Andrew Lake. Midway through the first lap the runners passed through what would have been downtown Andrew, if there ever was such a thing. Williams Springer was setting the pace at this point. An eighth-grader on the cross-country team at Trinity Catholic, Springer led the field up a hill and over a fallen tree in Central Andrew. Paul Guyas was just a step behind, though, and by the second trip through the heart of Andrew, Guyas was 50 meters ahead of Springer and pulling away. When Guyas crossed the finish line in a winning 20:36, his lead had grown to just under 200 meters. Springer was second in 21:22, and Hans Hassell placed third in 22:36.

Isabel Davis
Isabel Davis

In the women's competition, Isabel Davis, a member of the Cornerstone Learning girls' cross-country team, was also trailing on the first trip through Andrew. But Davis was the first female athlete through Andrew on the second lap, and her final time of 27:15 put her more than 100 meters ahead of the next woman in the race. Martha Guyas was the women's runner-up and fifteenth overall in 28:00. Marlee Tucker, a sophomore on the Franklin County High girls' cross-country team, placed third in the women's standings and nineteenth overall in 29:12.

57 athletes finished the 2019 Salute To Prefontaine 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.

Chris Jones leaves the field far, far behind at the Dr. Eric Dueno Memorial 10K

No one else had run nine kilometers when Chris Jones finished the ten kilometers of the fourth annual Dr. Eric Dueno Memorial Run in Bainbridge, Georgia on Saturday morning, 28 September 2019. Jones winning time in the 6.2-mile race was 36:07, taking more than four minutes off the event record. Tallahassee, Florida master runner Julia Sura was the first woman in the 10K, placing eighth overall in 58:53.

Daniel Cook and Cammie Hungerford have blue-ribbon performances at the Pink Run

Sandwiched between prostate cancer awareness month (September) and pancreatic cancer awareness month (November), October is breast cancer awareness month. That means pink ribbons, pink shirts, pink signs, and, well, pink everything. In Thomasville, Georgia, though, they get things going a little sooner, and Archbold's fourth annual Live Better 5K Pink Run was a few days early on Saturday morning, 28 September 2019. Daniel Cook won the 3.1-mile run through the streets of Thomasville, running 20:19. Cammie Hungerford was the first woman in the 5K, coming in sixth overall in 22:49.

Both Cook and Hungerford had run the race before. Cook had finished eighth in the 2018 Pink Run, while Hungerford had won the women's title in the 2017 race.

Jeff Capps was the top master runner that morning, placing second overall in 20:51. Thomasville master runner Chad Johnson finished third overall in 21:30.

Catherine Adams was runner-up in the women's standings, placing seventh overall in 23:12. Morgan Long was the third woman and ninth overall in 24:17. Nancy Herring was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, twelfth overall in 25:20.

204 athlete finished the the 2019 Live Better 5K Pink Run. And if you're worried that road racing is becoming a women's sport, note that the female finishers of the 5K outnumbered their male counterparts 149 to 55. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee, Florida chip-timed the race.

Ben Barwick and Traci Ferris hustle through Hahira at the Get-A-Mammy 5K

Regular mammograms are vital for the early detection of breast cancer. The mission of the non-profit Get-A-Mammy, Inc., is to make sure that all women have the wherewithal to get mammograms. To this end, in 2011 Get-A-Mammy started holding an annual fundraising road race, the Get-A-Mammy 5K.

Ben Barwick won the ninth annual Get-A-Mammy 5K in Hahira, Georgia on Saturday morning, 28 September 2019. A second-year engineering student at Valdosta State University, Barwick ran the 3.1-mile race in 17:38, finishing nearly 100 meters ahead of the next runner. Traci Ferris of Valdosta, Georgia was the first woman in the race, placing sixth overall in 22:49.

Another Valdosta State undergrad, first-year student Rio Espinoza, took second behind Barwick in 17:38. Caleb Watson, a Valdosta State senior, was third in 18:15.

Women's champ Traci Ferris had run the Get-A-Mammy 5K two years earlier, finishing ninth in the women's standings in the 2017 race. At her return in 2019, though, she ran more than two minutes faster than she had in that first appearance. Valdosta State frosh MacKenzie Sullivan was the women's runner-up in the 2019 race, coming in seventh overall in 23:41. The 2018 women's champ, Darby Jones of Hahira, was the third woman and ninth overall in 25:19.

Tifton, Georgia athlete David Pollock was the fastest master runner in the 5K, placing tenth overall and seventh in the men's standings at 25:28. Valdosta's Mary Scott Lincoln was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, eleventh overall in 25:33. Lincoln had been the second in the women's division in the 2018 Get-A-Mammy.

71 athletes finished the 2019 Get-A-Mammy 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

Tristan Cravello and Jenna Thompson take firsts at the FSU Family Weekend 5K

In Tallahassee, Florida, 29 September 2019 was the Saturday of Florida State University's Parents' Weekend. In the evening, the FSU football team entertained the moms and dads with a 31 to 13 win over visiting North Carolina State. There were earlier events as well. For instance, in the morning there was the annual Family Weekend 5K, starting and finishing from the Askew Student Life Center in the heart of campus. FSU undergraduate Tristan Cravello won the race by over 300 meters, running 16:49. Jenna Thompson, a law student at Florida State, was the first woman in the race, placing seventh overall in 20:30.

Tristan Cravello
Tristan Cravello

Before coming to Florida State, Cravello had attended Doctors Charter School in Miami Shores, Florida, where he ran cross-country and track. The Family Weekend 5K was the end of a fast September for the third-year Seminole. A week earlier, Cravello had run 17:02 for third place in the Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival 5K. Seven days before that, he had gone 17:26 at the Sickle Cell 5K, another third-place showing.

William Buntin finished runner-up to Cravello in 17:57. Buntin is a first-year Florida State student, but it wasn't his first race in Tallahassee, nor his fastest. Notably, he had run 16:39 on the 5000-meter course at Apalachee Regional Park, where he was competing for Martin County High in the 2018 FHSAA State Cross-Country Championship. Matt Magaho took third in 18:30. Will Mayer was the first master runner in the race, seventh in the men's standings and eighth overall in 20:44.

Course Map

Like Cravello and Buntin, Jenna Thompson also had a background in high school athletics. Before coming to Tallahassee, the Family Weekend 5K women's champ had run cross-country and track at Palm Harbor University High, where she graduated in 2015. Jodi O'Neill was the first woman master across the finish line and the second female, ninth overall in 20:48. Elizabeth Shipley was third on the women's list and twelfth overall in 21:22.

264 athletes finished the 2019 Family Weekend 5K. Miles and Minutes, LLC, of Tallahassee timed and scored the race.

Junious Brown, Ella Porcher, and Maclay take the brooms to Live Oak for the Twilight Invitational

Bishop Snyder High hosted the inaugural Twilight Invitational Cross-Country Meet at the Suwanee Country Club in Live Oak, Florida on Friday evening, 27 September 2019. With first year events, you never know if there is going to be a second year. But for as long as the Twilight Invitational survives, folks will remember the first year as the year that Maclay won everything. Junious Brown, a Maclay senior, was first in the boys' 5K at 16:09, leading his team of Marauders to a winning score of 45. Maclay sophomore Ella Porcher won the girls' 5K in 19:36, while her squad took the team title with a perfect score of 15.

Junious Brown

Golf courses are usually good places to run. Or they would be, if it weren't for all the white balls whizzing around. These are the size of large hailstones and are hard enough to do you serious injury if they strike you. At the Apalachee Regional Park Cross-Country Course or the Miccosukee Greenway in Tallahassee, you can call a sheriff's deputy if you spot someone hitting these dangerous projectiles around. For some reason, though, the authorities aren't interested in keeping these menaces away from country clubs. Somehow, though, the Bishop Snyder crew made sure that the Suwanee Country Club was safe for the duration of the Twilight Invitational.

The cease fire of dimpled white projectiles was in force when the boys' 5K started at 6:00 PM. Junious Brown won the race by over 100 meters, picking up his third victory of the 2019 campaign. Only one athlete has beaten Brown so far this season, Satellite junior Gabe Montague, who bested Brown at the Katie Caples Invitational on 21 September 2019. Saint Johns Country Day sophmore David Stratton ran 16:30 on the rolling hills of Suwanee Country Club to finish runner-up to Brown. North Florida Christian senior David Andrew Keen took third in 17:15.

Live Oak Twilight Invitational Course

Leo Rutledge, a Maclay junior, also cracked the top ten for the Marauders, placing fifth in 17:23. Frosh Clayton Knox (11th, 18:18), junior Michael Sweeney (13th, 18:26), and frosh Carter Rothel (15th, 18:35) also scored for Maclay, giving their team 45 points and first place in a field of fifteen schools. Led by sophomore Julian Bautista (6th, 17:31) Saint Francis Catholic was second with 97 points. Tallahassee Lincoln was a close third in the team standings with 103 points. Nicholas Samuel (4th, 17:20) was Lincoln's top scorer.

The girls' 5K was scheduled for 6:30, following the boys' race. In addition to being later than the boys' race, it was also a lot closer. Ella Porcher outkicked Laci Watford for a narrow win, 19:36 to 19:38. Watford, a University Christian sophomore, was one of only two representatives of her school in the race, so she didn't count in the team scoring. The next four runners did, and they were all Maclay athletes--eighth-grader Gracie Koppel (3rd, 20:57), frosh Sophia Paredes (4th, 21:01), and seniors Hannah Hosay (5th, 21:20) and Rachael Stockel (6th, 21:28). With the first five scorers in the race, Maclay had fifteen points, the lowest possible score.

Ella Porcher

Diamond Cooper, a senior, ran 21:40 for seventh, leading Wakulla High to second in the girls' team standings with 48 points. Community Christian scored 100 to place third in the eleven-team field, led by their sophomore ace, Morgan Wilson. Wilson was eighth in the 5K in 21:55.

Many of the athletes in the Live Oak Twilight Invitational will be back at the Suwanee Country Club on 23 October 2019, when the course hosts the FHSAA 1A District 2 Cross-Country Championship, the first round of Florida's state championship series in high school cross-country.

Kyra Swart and Patrick Koon soar at the Falcon Invitational

"I haven't run cross-country ever before," said Kyra Swart. "I've been a sprinter, running 200 and 400 meters. Probably my best event though is the 80-meter hurdles."

Ella Holman, Kyra Swart, Madison Sims
Ella Holman, Kyra Swart, & Madison Sims

Nevertheless, Swart is getting the hang of the cross-country game. The Deerlake sixth-grader won the girls' 3K at the Falcon Invitational Middle School Cross-Country Meet on Thursday evening, 26 September 2019, her second win of the season. Swart's time on the three-kilometer course through Tallahassee, Florida's Phipps Park was 12:31. The Swift Creek Wolves were first in the girls' team standings, while the Fairview Falcons were the top boys' team. Fairview sixth-grader Patrick Koon won the boys' 3K, running 10:11.

The girls' ran first in Phipps Park, their race starting just after 6:00 PM. The park was hot, dry, and dusty, the sky bright and cloudless. 700 meters into the race, three runners were well out in front of the rest of the field. Madison Sims, a Fort Braden seventh-grader, was the pacesetter, with Kyra Swart and Deerlake eighth-grader Ella Holman following in her shadow.

Kyra Swart

"We stayed together for a while," said Swart. "But about one mile I picked it up."

Making a move going up the biggest hill on the course, Swart broke away from the other two runners, going on to win by over 50 meters in 12:31. Holman took second in 12:44. Sims held off a late charge by Elizabeth Kessler, a Swift Creek eighth-grader, to take third, 12:49 to 12:51.

Ava Jones and Natalie Nelson, both of Swift Creek, joined their teammate Kessler in the top ten, eighth-grader Jones sixth in 13:06 and seventh-grader Nelson ninth in 13:25. Seventh-grader Aza Hampton (12th, 13:32) and eighth-grader Naomi Buchanan completed the scoring for Swift Creek, giving the Wolves 44 points and their first victory of the season.

Seventh-grader Aditi Mukhirala placed fifth in 13:05, leading the Montford Mustangs to second in the team standings with 51 points. Swart and Holman's Deerlake Bucks were third in the six-team field with 58 points.

"I really need to work on not falling off during the second half of the race," said Patrick Koon.

Patrick Koon
Patrick Koon

It's hard to push the pace when your closest competitor is a phone call behind you. Koon may not have been in a different area code than the rest of the athletes in the boys' 3K, but he did cross the finish line 100 meters ahead of the next runner. Anyway, it's unlikely that the runner-up would have had time to take his call. Koon already had a comfortable lead of 40 meters after the first 800 meters of the race, but immediately behind him, Justin Greenwood and Jackson Rowe were debating second place. A week earlier, Fairview's Greenwood had outkicked Rowe of Montford for the runner-up spot in the boys' 3K at the Mustang Stampede. Since that last meeting of the two eighth-graders, Jackson had won the middle school boys' 3K at the Alligator Lake Invitational in Lake City, Florida on 21 September 2019.

Rowe wasn't ready to challenge Koon, but he did his best to outrun Greenwood. With just under 300 meters left in the race, Rowe was ten meters ahead of Greenwood. But during that final 300 Greenwood made up those ten meters and then added ten of his own to take second in 13:32. Rowe was third in 10:34. In a battle for fourth, Deerlake eighth-grader Brooks Bowden outkicked Drayden Reams, a Raa eighth-grader, 11:09 to 11:10.

Justin Greenwood

Eighth-grader Ranceeson Grace took sixth place for Fairview. Eighth-grader Enijah Thomas (8th, 11:24) also cracked the top ten for the Falcons. Eighth-grader Keno Rivers was the fifth and final scorer for Fairview, coming in thirteenth in 11:44. Rivers' thirteen points gave the Falcons 30 and first place in a seven-team field.

Fairview and Deerlake have been going back and forth during Leon County Schools' 2019 middle school cross-country season, with Deerlake winning the even-numbered meets and Fairview the odd-numbered events. The Falcon Invitational was the fifth meet of the season, so it was Fairview's turn to win. The Deerlake boys were second with 45. Swift Creek was third with 98 point and Montford fourth, also with 98. Seventh-grader Asher Robertson was the top runner for Swift Creek, tenth in 11:31.

Only one middle school cross-country meet remains on the regular season schedule for Leon County Schools, the League Championship at Apalachee Regional Park on Thursday evening, 3 October 2019. The athletes saw ARPXC in the season opener on 29 August 2019. Swart is ready to race on the course again.

"I feel like it has some good uphills and downhills," said Swart. "I could definitely run better now that I know the course."

"I think I can break 10:00," said Koon. "If I can get down to 9:50, I think I'll be competitive at State."
