No settling for second for Avenger and Smoot at 2011 Barnes 5K

In Valdosta, Georgia, the rule seems to be that when your institution gets to be 100 years old, you celebrate by founding a 5K road race. So in 2006, when Valdosta State University was celebrating its centenary, the school held the VSU Centennial 5K. And in 2009, when Barnes Healthcare Services completed its first century, the business hosted the first annual Barnes 100 Years 5K.


The Centennial 5K became the VSU Community 5K, but the Barnes 100 Years 5K was still the Barnes 100 Years 5K when it was held for the third time on Saturday morning, 16 July 2011. Wet roads and rainy weather may have kept some runners home, but not Valdosta's Masked Avenger. After finishing runner-up in the 2010 Barnes 5K, the Avenger raced to an 18:02 victory in this year's event, finishing close to 200 meters ahead of the next runner, Valdosta's James Marino (2nd, 18:49). Juan Castanon of Hahira posted a 19:09 to finish third, and a 19:59 performance earned fourth place and first master honors for Roger Horton of Lake Park, Georgia.


Valdosta's Alice Smoot also improved on a runner-up finish in the 2010 race, winning the women's division this year with a 20:54, placing seventh overall. Smoot was also the first woman master for the second year in a row. Smoot finished almost 800 meters ahead of the next woman in, Valdosta's Angel Godwin (13th, 23:43).


The next road race in Valdosta will be the second annual Break Bread Bun Run 5K, starting from the YMCA on Gornto Road at 8:00am ET on Saturday, 23 July 2011. (Read about last year's Bun Run 5K here.)
