Powers and Helton make the records fall in Valdosta

Defending champions and race records meant nothing to Jeff Powers at the third annual Valdosta Independence Day 5K on 4 July 2011. The former (c/o 2007) Central Michigan Chippewa distance runner from Avon, Indiana set a new event record of 16:15, winning the race and defeating 2010 champ Chris Rice of Valdosta. Rice finished close to 200 meters back in 16:56. Thomas Phillips of Valdosta was the fastest master in the race, placing ninth overall in 20:09.


Last year Jordanne Helton ran the Valdosta Independence Day 5K in 20:28, four seconds faster than Ashley McGee's event record, but finished runner-up behind her Valdosta State teammate, Angelina Horne. This year Helton ran 20:16 to capture both the race record and the women's title, placing tenth overall. Half a minute behind Helton, Alice Smoot was the second woman in, finishing 14th overall in 20:49 to repeat as the top woman master. Just behind Smoot, Alison Peters of Lowndes High anticipated her upcoming cross-country season with a 21:02 performance, finishing 15th overall as the third female.
