I remember a Peachtree Road Race in the mid-1970s where the entries were numbered in the hundreds instead of the the tens of thousands, and fifteen minutes before the race started a bunch of nine-year-olds were crouched on the starting line, reserving their spot. Quite a contrast with 2011, where entries were capped at 60,000 and distributed by lottery, and each runner was assigned to a specific starting wave.
I'm tempted to misquote Yogi Berra, and report that no one runs there anymore, it's too crowded. But over 200 runners from the
Trouble Afoot! region (100 miles around Tallahassee) covered the ten kilometers from Buckhead to Piedmont Park. While Sammy Kitwara was winning the men's race in 28:05 and Werknesh Kidane was posting a 31:23 to take the women's title, Raley Beggs was leading the area's men with a 35:58 performance and Aimee Lang the women with a 45:59.
Many runners in the region stayed closer to home and ran Valdosta's third annual
Independence Day 5K or Greensboro's 29th annual
Firecracker 5000, or opted for a Saturday race at Live Oak's
God & Country 5K. Nevertheless, I found 244 athletes who did Peachtree. I may have missed a few, having overlooked some southwest Georgia village or north Florida hamlet. But everyone I found is listed below.
