Lake owns Springtime, makes it three wins in a row

Nicholas Maedel, Chris Lake, and Stephen CoxBecause of the construction in and around the Capital Cascades Greenway, there have been three different courses in the past three years for Gulf Winds Track Club's annual Springtime 10K, including a new route for the 37th annual race last Saturday, March 31. One thing has remained constant for the Tallahassee 10K through those three years, though. Chris Lake keeps winning. The University of Florida medical student took a break from studying for his Monday exams to score his third straight Springtime 10K win, running 33:29. "I wouldn't have missed this race," wrote Lake.

Nicholas Maedel, Chris Lake, and Stephen CoxThe 2012 course change had the runners starting from downtown going south on Monroe Street instead of north as in previous years. Chris Lake and Nicholas Maedel led 900 10K runners plus another 800 5K runners through the first mile in 4:56. Just off their pace, Stephen Cox shadowed the pair in 5:00. Cox closed with the leaders during the second mile and for a short while the three leaders ran as a group through the streets of Myers Park. But early in the third mile Lake opened a gap on Maedel and Cox. Cox broke away from Maedel to give chase, but by the halfway point of the 6.2-mile race Lake had slammed the door shut on the field. Lake's lead only got longer during the last three miles of the race. 33:25 after leaving downtown, Lake arrived at the finish line in front of the Florida Department of Transportation's Haydon Burns Building to claim the title. Cox finished runner-up with a 34:18, followed by Maedel in third place with a 34:33 and Nate Kaiser in fourth at 34:39. Maclay School track coach Gary Droze was the fastest master in the race, placing fifth overall in 35:57.

Lindsay Zeiler and Sheryl RosenIf Lake leads a busy life, so does Lindsay Zeiler of Capital City Runners. An FSU grad student and assistant track coach, Zeiler had been coaching at a track meet at the University of North Florida the day before the Springtime 10K, returning to Tallahassee at 2:00 am Saturday morning, just six hours before the start of the race. 2010 Springtime 10K women's champion Sheryl Rosen led the ladies past the mile mark, but Zeiler was just off her right shoulder. Zeiler passed Rosen during the second mile, then built up a lead of over 100 meters by the halfway point. At the finish line Zeiler was over a minute ahead of Rosen, winning the women's division 37:33 to 38:35. Behind Rosen, Katie Showman ran 40:30 to finish third among the women, and at 40:47 Micah Adriani was the fourth woman in. Thomasville's Mary Anne Grayson took the women's master title with a 42:40.

Lisa JohnsonIt wasn't Lake's three in a row, but in the 5K Lisa Johnson was starting on her own streak. In 2011 the Tallahassee schoolteacher had won the Springtime 5K outright, beating both women and men. This year she successfully defended her overall title in the shorter race, running 18:24 and finishing nearly 200 meters ahead of the next runner. The runner-up and top male in the race was David Witman, who crossed the line in 19:02. The fastest male master in the 5K was Crawfordville's Duane Evans, eighth overall in 20:31. Tallahassee's Kory Skrob captured female master honors with a 24:36 effort.

Taylor, Beall win FSU Habitat's spring 5K

Running through the streets of the Florida State University campus, Aaron Taylor posted a 19:37 5K to win the Habitat For Humanity road race on Saturday morning, 24 March 2012. Taylor finished over half a minute ahead of the runner up, Jose Reed, who crossed the line in 20:08. FAMU philosophy professor Dr. Mike LaBossiere was the fastest master in the race, placing third in 20:38. Brittany Beall took top women's honors, outrunning the rest of the females in the field with a 23:14 12th-place finish.

The race started from Florida State's venerable old Tully Gym, heading north on Chieftain Way to the Call Street greenway. Former Tampa Wharton distance runner Aaron Taylor had company for most of the first mile, including Jose Reed and Taylor Van Strait. But on the hilly second mile, Aaron Taylor ran away from the field. The second half of the race was Taylor running home alone, while LaBossiere picked off all but one of the fading pursuers.

Brittany Beall led the women's field early, but Leah Sanchez and Raychel Gray closed the gap, and the three were running together as late as the end of the second mile. Beall finally got away for good during the final mile of the race, running to a 23:19 victory. Not far behind, Sanchez barely edged Gray for second, both runners clocked in 23:24. The first woman master was Sissi Carroll, at 24:58 the sixth woman finisher and 18th runner overall.

"Erin Go Fast!" Wood, Hall capture Celtic 5K crowns

On Saturday, 17 March 2012, for the third straight year Tallahassee celebrated St. Patrick's Day with a downtown festival. It wasn't on the scale of the observations in Boston or Chicago or Savannah, but it was a true St. Patrick's Day celebration. There was even the usual perplexing spectacle of a band with Scottish bagpipes wearing Scottish kilts and playing "Scotland the Brave" in honor of an Irish Catholic saint. And this year a road race was added to the festivities, the inaugural Capital City Youth Services Celtic 5K. Tallahassee runners had already had chances to run "wearin' the green" at the Doggie Dash 8K earlier that day and at the Shamrock Scurry 5K the weekend before, but even so 128 athletes braved the hills of downtown Tallahassee to run the Celtic 5K.

Peter Wood climbed the final hill up College Avenue in front of the field of 128 to win the race, running 16:45. Behind Wood, Mike Nesius posted a 17:01 to finish as the runner up. Brian Corbin was the fastest master runner in the race, placing third overall in 19:13. Jennifer Hall was the class of the women's field, taking the title with a 22:49 tenth place finish. Kirsten Baggett was the women's runner up as well as the top female master, coming in 17th overall in 25:19.

Molosky and Showman leaders of the pack at Doggie Dash

Vince MoloskyVince Molosky posted a 27:18 on the streets of Southwood to win the 8K at the second annual Doggie Dash on Saturday morning, March 17. Molosky crossed the finish line about 100 yards ahead of the runner up, Nate Kaiser, who ran 27:38. Maclay School track coach Gary Droze was the first master runner, third overall in 28:09. The first female finisher was Katie Showman at 32:20, while a 33:19 earned the female master title for Mary Anne Grayson of Thomasville.

Nate Kaiser and Gary DrozeIt was the Florida Department of Corrections Foundation's second year of hosting the Doggie Dash, but last year the race had been 5K. This time around the feature race was eight kilometers, just a sliver short of five miles. The runners lined up near Southwood's Central Park for a 9:00 am race, then waited till almost 9:20 for the command to start. Maybe the delay had made Molosky impatient, because he wasted no time in going to the front. Halfway through the first mile Molosky was already running well head of the field as the athletes ran west on Shumard Oaks Blvd. Before the runners had gone two miles Molosky was half a minute up on his nearest pursuers, Droze and Kaiser. Kaiser dropped Droze on the third mile to take sole possession of second place, but Molosky continued to pull away, building up a margin of nearly a minute. Kaiser began to close the gap on the last mile, but Molosky was too far ahead to catch. At the finish line back in the Central Park, it was Molosky over Kaiser, 27:18 to 27:38.

Katie ShowmanNo one in the women's field was closing in on Katie Showman at the end of the race. Showman led the entire way, while Kelly Stevens and Mary Anne Grayson fought for the runner-up spot. Grayson led Stevens with half a mile to go, but only by five seconds. Showman ran 32:20 for the women's title, but Stevens caught Grayson to take the second spot, 33:12 to 33:19.

The entries in the shorter race were led by Brookwood School's Stephen Robbins, taking a break from the high school track season to post a 17:27 win. Close on Robbins' heels, FSU graduate student Lindsay Zeiler ran 17:32 to finish second overall and take the women's title. Defending women's champ Sheryl Rosen was third overall in 18:14.

Cox and Seiberlich rock the Shamrock

Jacksonville, Florida hosted the 36th annual River Run 15K on Saturday, 10 March 2012. Maclay School assistant track coach Stephen Cox, though, was in Tallahassee.

"This is the first River Run I've missed in years," reflected Cox.

Vince MoloskyCox's rivals in Tallahassee distance running may want to take up a collection to pay for Cox's entry into next year's River Run. In lieu of the Jacksonville race, Cox stayed home and ran Tallahassee's Shamrock Scurry 5K, winning that race through the Killearn area in 16:27. The Maclay head track coach, Gary Droze, was the first master in the race, placing fifth overall in 17:09. Wisconsin master runner Carrie Seiberlich took the women's title, finishing 22nd overall in 19:43.

When the race started, though, it was Anthony Stricker and not Cox who jumped out in front of the field. When Stricker faded, Cox and Vince Molosky took over the lead. At about two kilometers, Cox made a move and opened up a gap on Molosky. Meanwhile, Charlie Johnson was running a stalking race. While Cox held on to the lead, Johnson moved up from fourth to pass Nate Kaiser. Then, with a kilometer to go, Johnson passed Molosky to move into second. Molosky wasn't going to take that lying down. While Cox ran in first in 16:27, Johnson and Molosky battled for the runner up spot. In the final stretch Molosky prevailed, 16:36 to 16:38. Kaiser followed in fourth at 16:43.

Leading the women, Carrie Seiberlich and Katie Showman ran almost side-by-side early in the race. Very little changed over the next four kilometers. Less than a kilometer from the finish line it was clear that the women's title would go to either Seiberlich or Showman. Late in the race Seiberlich made her case, pulling away from Showman to win 19:43 to 19:52. Behind them, Thomasville master runner Mary Anne Grayson took third among the women, finishing 30th overall in 20:22.

The Shamrock Scurry 5K has been run in Killearn since 1981, but not quite annually. There have been a couple of hiatuses over the years, but the current incarnation of the race has been held every March since 2010. 598 athletes finished the run this year, many of whom enjoyed a post-race pancake and sausage breakfast, courtesy of Killearn United Methodist Church.

Lake and Grayson take 2012 Thomasville Road 10K titles

After going missing from the schedule in 2011, the 10K race was back on the slate of events at the seventh annual Thomasville Road Baptist Church Road Race last Saturday, March 3. Tallahasseean and University of Florida medical student Chris Lake won the 6.2-mile race in 34:22. It wasn’t quite fast enough to break David Altmaier’s 2009 course record of 34:14, but it was fast enough to finish more than 600 yards ahead of the runner-up, Will Stanford. Stanford posted a 36:39 for the 10K. Maclay School track coach Gary Droze was the fastest master runner in the race, placing third overall in 37:26. Thomasville, Georgia runner Mary Anne Grayson was the first woman finisher as well as the first woman master, running 44:10 for 16th.

Lake stated that the 10K was a tune-up for his next race, the River Run 15K in Jacksonville, Florida on March 10. He wasn’t challenged competitively, though, as he sped through the streets of northeast Tallahassee. Before the runners had reached the end of the first mile, Lake was already 60 yards ahead and continuing to pull away, with Droze and Stanford locked in a struggle for second behind him. Lake described the course as tough, but you wouldn’t have thought so watching him cruise over the hills on Thomasville Road. While Lake ran on to victory, Stanford broke away from Droze to secure second. Droze was the last runner in the field to crack 40 minutes; fourth place went to Michael Kennett in 41:13, with Bing Xu a few feet back in 41:16.

Beyond the River Run 15K, Lake is pointing for Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota on June 16. Lake’s most recent effort at the 26.2-mile marathon distance was in Savannah, Georgia’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon on Nov. 5, 2011, where he ran 2:34:02 and placed second in a field of nearly 5,000 runners.

Mary Anne Grayson was even more dominant in the women’s competition than Chris Lake was among the men. Leading from the outset, Grayson’s wining time of 44:10 put her more than half a mile ahead of the next woman. Behind Grayson, Tallahassee master runners Lori Abbey and Paula O’Neill battled closely for second, still just a few yards apart as they ran north on Thomasville Road in the closing stages of the race. At the finish line, though, it was Abbey who took the women’s runner-up spot, 48:08 to 48:22.
