Chris Lake blasts a 15:49 at the Nene Fest 5K

If you were in the Indianhead Acres neighborhood of Tallahassee, Florida, on Saturday morning, 9 May 2015, you might have seen Chris Lake racing on the streets. If you paused and waited long enough, you might have seen some of the runners following him, too. But you'd have to wait patiently, because Lake finished more than half a kilometer ahead of the next runner that morning in the second annual Nene Fest 5K. His time for the hilly 3.1-mile run was an impressive 15:49. The Nene Fest 5K doesn't have much history behind it yet, but it's run on the same USATF certified course as the Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival 5K. In 14 of the last 15 years, Lake's time would have won the Women's Distance Festival race. Only Canadian Olympian Kevin Sullivan has run faster on the course during that time period.


Most of the streets in Indianhead Acres are called "Nene," which is Muscogee for road or street--a nod to the language of the people who once inhabited the area. Thus the race took the runners on Chockasacka Nene, Ostapakin Nene, Chuli Nene, Apakin Nene, and Chowkeebin Nene. However, the race started on one of the few non-Nene streets in the Neighborhood, East Indianhead Drive. Lake lost little time in getting into the lead once the starting siren sounded at 8:00 AM. It was his last race in Tallahassee before moving to Charlotte, North Carolina, to become a resident physician. Lake wanted to make it a good one.


"My main goal was to be under 16:00 today and try to make up from a subpar Palace Saloon 5K performance," said Lake. "This would be the last chance at the 5K to achieve my goal before moving up to North Carolina in a few weeks. I ran a really consistent race, even splits each mile."


FAMU professor Geb Kiros was the only runner to keep Lake in sight through the first kilometer or two; after that even Kiros lost track of Lake on the winding roads. Alone out front yet maintaining an even pace, Lake hit the finish line in a winning 15:49. Kiros was second in 17:38, the top master runner in the race. Tallahassee master runner Michael Kennett was third in 21:05.


Chris Lake had never run the course through Indianhead Acres before at either the Nene Fest or the Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival. Paula O'Neill had. In fact, she had won the women's title at the first Nene Fest 5K in 2014. About two kilometers into the second Nene Fest, O'Neill was leading the women's field, but Nancy Stedman was just 16 seconds back.


"Nancy had me running scared," said O'Neill.


Fear proved a powerful motivator. O'Neill widened the gap over Stedman during the second half of the race, going on to successfully defend her women's title with a 22:28, finishing sixth overall. Master runner Stedman was the women's runner-up, seventh overall in 23:00. Sarah Monbarren was third in the women's standings, coming in 10th overall in 23:57.


84 athletes finished the 2015 Nene Fest 5K. Award winners in the race received a jar of Nene Honey, produced by the bees of Indianhead Acres apiarists Michael and Shelly Callen.

Lake and Molen were in a hurry at the Scurry

Nick Merrett owned the downhills at the Shamrock Scurry 5K, but Chris Lake owned the uphills. Lake ran 16:30 to win the 14 March 2015 race on the streets of Killearn Estates in Tallahassee, Florida, while Merrett posted a 16:47 for second. Gary Droze was the top master runner in the race, finishing fifth overall in 17:44. Emily Molen took the women's title, placing 14th overall in 20:45, while Carrie Seiberlich came in 15th overall in 21:00 to finish as the second female and first woman master. 418 athletes finished the 3.1-mile race, with another 123 completing a one-mile fun run.


It was the 27th Shamrock Scurry 5K since the first in 1981, and it started just after 8:30 AM on Roscommon Drive near Killearn United Methodist Church. Right after the start, Chris Lake and Nick Merrett were out in front of the field. Lake had run the race once before, finishing third in 2014. Merrett, a second-year distance runner at the University of West Florida, had raced track and cross country in Tallahassee. A resident of Christchurch, New Zealand, his opportunities to race on the Tallahassee roads had been limited; this was his first Shamrock Scurry. For the first half a kilometer Lake and Merrett raced together, with Lake slightly ahead. Then came the descent. For most of the next two kilometers, the course was downhill on Shamrock Drive.


"On the first downhill he got ahead," said Lake, recalling Merrett's surge into the lead. "But on the incline around two miles I caught back up."


About halfway through the race when the runners turned off of Shamrock Drive, Merrett had opened a gap on Lake. At about three kilometers, though, a major uphill marked the start of the course's climb back up to the church and the finish line. On the hill Lake closed the gap, passing Merrett. Lake had a 30-meter lead when he reached the base of the last major climb of the race, Pancake Hill. Powering up the hill then driving home, Lake had widened that margin to 80 meters when he crossed the finish line first in 16:30, 22 seconds faster than his time the previous year. Merrett was second in 16:47. Nate Kaiser had passed Vince Molosky during the second half of the race and was making up ground on Merrett during the final 800 meters, but never got close enough to make a serious challenge for second. Kaiser finished third in 16:54. Molosky was fourth in 17:39 and Maclay School coach Gary Droze was fifth in 17:44.


Chris Lake is looking forward to his next race, the Springtime 10K on 28 March 2015--Tallahassee's largest spring road race. Before that, though, there's another milestone coming up in the medical student's life.


"I find out on Friday where I'm doing my residency," said Lake. "It's a big week."


Deerlake Middle School cross-country runner Emily Molen was setting the pace for the women's field half a kilometer into the race, with master runner Carrie Seiberlich and Montford Middle School cross-country runner Caitlin Wilkey close behind. Wilkey couldn't maintain the pace, leaving Seiberlich and Molen. At the base of Pancake Hill, Seiberlich was a few strides ahead of Molen, but there was still 800 meters left to race. In those final 800 meters Molen overtook Seiberlich then raced home in 20:45 for the women's title. Seiberlich was a place behind in 21:00. Caitlin Wilkey was the third female finisher, 18th overall in 21:29. Jillian Heddaeus was fourth in the women's standings, 20th overall in 22:05.


After the race a pancakes and sausage breakfast was served to the runners at Killearn United Methodist Church. Finish line and chip timing services for the 2015 Shamrock Scurry were provided by Gulf Winds Track Club.

Lake and Sherron each get a second TRBC 10K title

You can't talk to a runner about the Thomasville Road Baptist Church 10K without hearing about the hills. Chris Lake isn't an exception to this rule. Right after winning the 10th annual edition of the race on 7 March 2015, Lakes comments were colored by the hills.


"It's a tough course," Lake said of the Tallahassee, Florida, race. "Tougher than the Springtime 10K. Especially the last mile and a half. The last mile killed me."


Jillian Heddaeus, who finished third in the women's standings, concurred. "I think this course is tougher than Springtime. Last year I ran 50 seconds faster at Springtime than I did here."


"I was dreading the last hill," said women's runner-up Renee Cox. "But overall it wasn't that bad."


It's not just idle chatter. Tallahasseans can see the slopes the runners faced while driving on Thomasville Road between Armistead Road and the the church, or while traveling through the aptly-named Betton Hills section of town. Hilly, tough, or otherwise, Chris Lake won the 6.2-mile race in 34:08, faster than his 34:22 winning time in 2012 and the second-fastest time recorded in the Thomasville Road Baptist Church 10K since the event was first run in 2006. Defending women's champion Katie Sherron was the first female finisher, placing seventh overall in 42:02.


The 10K and a concurrently run 5K started from Thomasville Road Baptist Church just after 8:30 AM on a Saturday morning. 195 athletes finished the 10K and another 236 the 5K but Lake was soon in front of them all, dropping an early challenge by Zach DeVeau. DeVeau held on to finish runner-up in 35:59. Donalsonville, Georgia, athlete Myles Gibson was third in 38:51, the top master runner in the race. David Welling edged Mark Tombrink for fourth, 40:33 to 40:39.


Lake won the race by more than half a kilometer, but the road to the starting line hadn't been smooth.


"I broke my toe after the Gainesville Half Marathon [on 15 February 2015]," said Lake. "I've only been able to train for ten days now."


"My next goal is to get faster in the 10K and 5K and get ready for Springtime and Palace," continued Lake. In addition to the Springtime 10K and Palace Saloon 5K, Lake is also looking ahead to the Shamrock Scurry 5K.


Renee Cox was in front of the women's field for the first half of the race. Katie Sherron, the 2014 women's champion, was never far behind, though.


"I was leading till about mile three," recalled Cox. "Then Katie made a move."


It was a decisive move. Over the second half of the 10K, Sherron built up a lead of over 200 meters on Cox. At the finish line, Sherron was seventh overall in 42:02, capturing her second straight women's crown in the race. Cox was the women's runner-up, tenth overall in 43:03. Heddaeus was third in the women's standings, 12th overall in 43:24. Kory Skrob was the top woman master and ninth female finisher, 37th overall in 49:21.

Eric Godin won the 5K event at the Thomasville Baptist Church Road Races, running 18:38. At 20:22 Scott Minnert was the runner-up and fastest master runner in the 3.1-mile race. Master runner Mary Anne Grayson of Thomasville, Georgia, topped the women's competition in the 5K, coming in fifth overall in 22:17.

Lake and Gutierrez take the Trent Trot at a gallop

On Saturday morning, 24 January 2015, Chris Lake turned a 16:19 5K through the Dublin Downs neighborhood of Tallahassee, Florida, winning the sixth annual Trent Trot. It was just two weeks after Lake had placed seventh at the Disney Marathon, running 2:33:34. Behind Lake, Seeley Gutierrez edged Jensen Swopes for the women's title 18:49 to 18:59 for the women's title. Gutierrez and Swopes are the only two women to break 19:00 on the Trent Trot course in the 5K race's history.


Since 2009, Roberts Elementary had staged the annual Red Fox Trot 5K. This year the race was re-named the Trent Trot in memory of Trent McElroy, a Roberts student who died of cancer in 2013--but not before racing in the Red Fox Trot three times after his diagnosis. Another significant change in 2015 was the number of participants. For the first five years the Red Fox Trot 5K had drawn a respectable but not spectacular number of runners, averaging just over 200 finishers a year. This year, as the Trent Trot, the numbers exploded. 574 athletes finished the Trent Trot 5K. None of them, however, could run with Chris Lake. The University of Florida medical student led from the start and ran alone for the entire 3.1 miles.


“It was a negative progression run for me,” said Lake. “I wanted to train to go faster at a good pace to begin with.”


The races Lake is training for in the coming months include the Gainesville Half Marathon, Jacksonville's Gate River Run 15K, Tallahassee's Springtime 10K and Palace Saloon 5K, and Thomasville's Rose City 10K. Jake Mazziotta, on the other hand, has his eye on the upcoming high school track season. A Maclay School sophomore, Mazziotta finished second behind Lake in 17:30. Tallahassee athlete Michael Martinez was the fastest master runner in the race, placing third in 18:20.


In the women's competition, Seeley Gutierrez also led the field for most of the race. However, Gutierrez didn't have the 300-meter gap on her rivals that Chris Lake had in the men's race. Unknown to Gutierrez, Florida State distance runners Jensen Swopes and Araceli Leon were battling for second, just 40 meters back. Gutierrez flashed across the finish line fifth overall, securing the women's title and setting the new course record of 18:49. Swopes and Araceli were still driving towards the line. In the end it was the senior Swopes prevailing over the frosh Araceli, 18:50 to 19:03. The two women were eighth and ninth overall. They weren't the only Seminoles in the race; seven Florida State women broke 20:00 and nine finished in the top twelve. Standing out among the tide of youth, Stephanie Liles-Weyant was the first woman master and sixth woman finisher, placing 14th overall in 19:32.


Not only did nearly 600 athletes defy the morning chill to turn out for the Trent Trot 5K, more than another 300 finished the one-mile fun run. One can only imagine what the crowd might have been if the weather had been a bit warmer.

Lake and Rosen back on top at Turkey Trot

Last year, Chris Lake’s five-year winning streak at the Tallahassee Turkey Trot 15K ended with a third-place finish. On Thursday morning, 27 November 2014, he was a Turkey Trot champion once again, winning the 9.3-mile race through Southwood in 49:37.


“I was trying to beat my time from two years ago,” said Lake.


He did. It was Lake’s fastest time yet at the Turkey Trot, and the fastest winning time in the race since 1995 when Jessie Close ran 49:12. Lake ran most of the race alone, leading nearly wire-to-wire and finishing almost half a mile ahead of the next runner. Stephen Cox placed second in 52:11 with Roger Schmidt taking third in 52:38 and Nate Kaiser fourth in 53:32. Seattle, Washington, distance runner Chris Fendrich was the fastest master runner in the race, placing fifth overall in 54:33.


“The women’s competition was excellent this year,” said Tallahassee lawyer Sheryl Rosen. “Seeley, Allison, Adriana, and Lauren were all up there.”


Excelling most was Rosen, who won her third straight Turkey Trot 15K women’s title, and her sixth since 2006. She didn’t come into the race with a lot of confidence, though.


“I’ve been injured and I haven’t raced for a year,” explained Rosen. “My leg still isn’t 100%. I started off conservative, about 6:45 per mile. Then I slowly inched my way up.”


Halfway through the race, Adriana Piekarewicz had just overtaken Mary Masterton to take the lead in the women’s field. Farther back, Lauren Poulos and Seeley Lovett chased the leaders followed by Sheryl Rosen and Allison Eagen. Over the final miles, Poulos moved up into the lead. Rosen was moving as well.


“I got up to Lauren Poulos at eight miles,” said Rosen. After that, “We traded the lead for about a mile. We were neck and neck down the hill.”

That was the final downhill on Merchants Row Boulevard toward the finish line on Esplanade Way. On that slope, Rosen broke away to take the lead for the final time, going on to win in 60:19. Poulos was the women's runner-up in 60:52. Adriana Piekarewicz was third in the women's standings at 61:03, while 2010 women's winner Allison Eagen followed in fourth at 62:33. Early leader Mary Masterton was the fifth woman finisher, running 62:41. Stephanie Liles-Weyant of Tallahassee was the top woman master, running 66:36.

Nearly 500 runners finished the 2014 Turkey Trot 15K, but more than 4500 additional athletes were simultaneously competing in the 10K and the 5K. David Thornton, a cross-country runner for Darton State College in Albany, Georgia, won the 10K in 34:49, finishing more than half a mile ahead of the next runner in the race. Tallahassee master runner Marci Gray led the women’s field from start to finish to take the women’s title with a 40:50.

In the 5K, last year's Turkey Trot 15K winner, Joshua Seitz, found himself in a fight for the lead with Remy Tamer and Arnoldo De Jesus. Seitz, a volunteer assistant coach for the FSU cross country team, pulled away late in the race to win the 3.1-mile event in 15:51. Tamer was second in 15:57 and De Jesus third in 16:00. Swift Creek Middle School cross-country runner Alyson Churchill edged Maclay’s Lindsay James for the top spot in the women’s standings, 20:59 to 21:01.

Herds of spectators see Lake and Sherron win Boston Mini

Folks who have run the Boston Marathon will tell you about the cheering fans that line the course all 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Boston. The Boston, Georgia, mini Marathon doesn't have that, but there are a lot of cows along the 13.1-mile course from Boston to Dixie and back again. It's not all cows, though. There are also cotton fields, and pecan groves, and wood lots, and hay fields--just about everything that South Georgia agriculture has to offer lies along the route through Thomas and Brooks Counties.


On Saturday morning, 25 October 2014, the cows got to see Chris Lake winning the Boston Mini for the second time, running the half marathon in 72:20. The cattle also witnessed FAMU biostatistics professor Geb Kiros taking top master honors, placing fourth overall in 79:39. FSU economics professor Katie Sherron won the women's title, finishing tenth overall in 85:15. The fastest woman master was Marci Gray.


The air was cool at 8:05 AM when the race started from downtown Boston. The sky was clear, though, promising that temperatures would be going up quickly. The top runners seemed determined to be done before it got too warm, setting a stiff early pace. After half a mile the race passed out of the Boston city limits, heading east into the rising sun toward Dixie. Vince Molosky, the Boston Mini champ in 2009 and 2010, led the field out of Boston, with Chris Lake half a step behind. Lake, a medical student at the University of Florida, had won the race in 2012, but hadn't been able to run in 2013.


"I didn't run it last year because I was on rotation in Gainesville and couldn't make it," he explained.


Lake was back in 2014, though, and determined to pick up a second Boston Mini title. During the third mile he pulled ahead of Molosky. Roger Schmidt of Capital City Runners and Geb Kiros followed half a minute back. During the next three miles Schmidt dropped Kiros, overtaking Molosky just past the five-mile mark. Lake was far ahead, running alone.


He stayed alone, all the way to the turnaround on the out-and-back course, and all the way back to the finish line in Boston. Lake won the race by over a quarter of a mile in 72:20, much faster than his 73:46 winning time in the 2012 Mini. Schmidt was second in 74:01, and Molosky third in 78:26. Valdosta High School cross-country coach Ryan Kelly caught Kiros during the last half mile then moved ahead to take fourth in 79:20. Kiros took fifth in 79:30. The FAMU professor was happy with the time.


"I ran a PR by almost five minutes," said Kiros. "My goal was to break 1:20:00 and I did."


Katie Sherron had run the Boston Mini in 2012, finishing second in the women's standings behind Sheryl Rosen. In 2014 Sherron was back but Rosen wasn't. Sherron started the race like this was her year, leading the women out of Boston. By the turnaround, she was more than four minutes ahead of the next woman. The gap widened even more on the way back to Boston. Sherron had a lead of over a mile and a quarter when she crossed the finish line in 85:15, taking the 2014 Boston Mini women's title. Behind Sherron, Kendall Andrews and Jillian Heddaeus had never been far apart during the race, and they were still close at the finish. Andrews took the women's runner-up spot though, finishing 22nd overall in 94:23. Heddaeus was third in the women's standings, placing 24th overall in 94:37. Less than a minute behind Heddaeus, Marci Gray was the fourth woman finisher and first woman master, coming in 27th overall in 95:31.


The Boston Mini hasn't changed much in 35 runnings. It's a different generation of cows along the course than those who witnessed the first race in 1979, but the route itself is the same. The pavement may very well be the same as well. The Dixie Road hasn't been repaved in years, and the cracks in the blacktop have become wide enough that the grass growing in them needs to be mowed.


"It was like running on tiles," Roger Schmidt described it.


I wouldn't fear for the future of the race. Boston loves its Mini Marathon, the centerpiece of a festival that includes a parade and beauty queens. The "Welcome To Boston" sign carries a notice of the date of the race, "The Last Saturday In October." In 2015 that would be October 31. I'd be shocked if there wasn't a 36th annual Boston Mini that day. The cows would miss it, too.

Sterling debuts for Lake and Turner at Tall Timbers

Chris Lake has won more than a few of the oldest races in the Tallahassee, Florida, area, sometimes more than once. He has won the Springtime 10K, a race that started in 1975, and the Rose City 10K, which goes back to 1978. He has won the 40-year-old Palace Saloon 5K and the 39-year-old Turkey Trot 15K. The Boston (Mini) Marathon was first run in 1979; Lake won it in 2012. At the 39th running of the Prefontaine Forest 5K on 27 September 2014 he added that title to his collection.


Lake hadn't won Gulf Winds Track Club's Pine Run 20K, though. When he started running cross country at Chiles High School in 2003, the Pine Run had been held at International Paper's Southlands Experimental Forest near Bainbridge, Georgia, each October since 1977. By the time he graduated Chiles in 2007 International Paper had announced that it was selling off Southlands, ending 30 years of Pine Runs. When Gordon Cherr revived the Pine Run at Tall Timbers Research Station in 2008, Lake was in his second year of studies at Florida State University.


On Saturday morning, 11 October 2014, Chris Lake finally got to test himself at the Pine Run. He made the grade. Lake ran 72:10, finishing the 20K race over 1600 meters ahead of the next runner. Lake's time was the fastest in the Pine Run's seven years at Tall Timbers, eclipsing even the 73:15 run by three-time Canadian Olympian Kevin Sullivan in the 2011 race.


Three-time Pine Run champion Vince Molosky finished second behind Lake in 78:41. Another Pine Run veteran, Eric Godin, was third in 86:15. Joel Piotrowski was the first master runner in the race, placing fourth overall in 87:08. It was his seventh Pine Run in the last seven years.


Master runner Elspeth Turner took the women's title, crossing the finish line just behind Piotrowski, fifth overall in 87:09. Like Lake, Turner hadn't run the Pine Run before, but marked her debut with a win. It was no wonder, though. Originally from the United Kingdom, Turner had been a standout distance runner at the University of Alabama, making the NCAA All American women's cross-country team in 1987 and setting a number of school records. Her school record in the women's 10,000 meters of 33:05.43, set in 1988, still stands.


Allison Palmer finished runner-up in the women's standings, 20th overall in 96:48. Jillian Heddaeus was the third woman across the finish line, 27th overall in 99:08.


164 athletes finished Gulf Winds Track Club's 2014 Pine Run 20K at Tall Timbers.

From 1977 to 2006 the race was run at International Paper's Southlands Experimental Forest south of Bainbridge, Georgia. From 2008 to 2014 the race was run at Tall Timbers Research Station at the north end of Leon County, Florida.
