Lake and Gutierrez take the Trent Trot at a gallop

On Saturday morning, 24 January 2015, Chris Lake turned a 16:19 5K through the Dublin Downs neighborhood of Tallahassee, Florida, winning the sixth annual Trent Trot. It was just two weeks after Lake had placed seventh at the Disney Marathon, running 2:33:34. Behind Lake, Seeley Gutierrez edged Jensen Swopes for the women's title 18:49 to 18:59 for the women's title. Gutierrez and Swopes are the only two women to break 19:00 on the Trent Trot course in the 5K race's history.


Since 2009, Roberts Elementary had staged the annual Red Fox Trot 5K. This year the race was re-named the Trent Trot in memory of Trent McElroy, a Roberts student who died of cancer in 2013--but not before racing in the Red Fox Trot three times after his diagnosis. Another significant change in 2015 was the number of participants. For the first five years the Red Fox Trot 5K had drawn a respectable but not spectacular number of runners, averaging just over 200 finishers a year. This year, as the Trent Trot, the numbers exploded. 574 athletes finished the Trent Trot 5K. None of them, however, could run with Chris Lake. The University of Florida medical student led from the start and ran alone for the entire 3.1 miles.


“It was a negative progression run for me,” said Lake. “I wanted to train to go faster at a good pace to begin with.”


The races Lake is training for in the coming months include the Gainesville Half Marathon, Jacksonville's Gate River Run 15K, Tallahassee's Springtime 10K and Palace Saloon 5K, and Thomasville's Rose City 10K. Jake Mazziotta, on the other hand, has his eye on the upcoming high school track season. A Maclay School sophomore, Mazziotta finished second behind Lake in 17:30. Tallahassee athlete Michael Martinez was the fastest master runner in the race, placing third in 18:20.


In the women's competition, Seeley Gutierrez also led the field for most of the race. However, Gutierrez didn't have the 300-meter gap on her rivals that Chris Lake had in the men's race. Unknown to Gutierrez, Florida State distance runners Jensen Swopes and Araceli Leon were battling for second, just 40 meters back. Gutierrez flashed across the finish line fifth overall, securing the women's title and setting the new course record of 18:49. Swopes and Araceli were still driving towards the line. In the end it was the senior Swopes prevailing over the frosh Araceli, 18:50 to 19:03. The two women were eighth and ninth overall. They weren't the only Seminoles in the race; seven Florida State women broke 20:00 and nine finished in the top twelve. Standing out among the tide of youth, Stephanie Liles-Weyant was the first woman master and sixth woman finisher, placing 14th overall in 19:32.


Not only did nearly 600 athletes defy the morning chill to turn out for the Trent Trot 5K, more than another 300 finished the one-mile fun run. One can only imagine what the crowd might have been if the weather had been a bit warmer.

Lake and Gutierrez lead the 2014 Melon Run

Finishing over a minute ahead of the next runner, Chris Lake won Monticello's 36th annual Melon Run 5K on Saturday morning, 21 June 2014. Lake's time, 16:17, wasn't a course record, but it was the fastest time posted at the race since 2008. Geb Kiros of Tallahassee was the top master runner in the field, finishing third overall in 17:54. Seeley Gutierrez won her second Melon Run women's title, placing ninth overall in 19:08. Paula O'Neill was the top woman master for the second year in a row, coming in 30th overall in 23:34.


The Melon Run course makes a 3.1-mile loop around Monticello, Florida, going uphill and down. The athletes traverse streets with good pavement and not-so-good pavement. A large part of the race is run on the Monticello Rail Trail. The 5000 meters of running passes neighborhoods, businesses, and parks. Yet of those varied 5000 meters, the runners seem to save their comments for the last 400--the climb up the Water Street hill. It's as if the other 4600 meters of the course didn't exist. Even Chris Lake, the race winner, had a few words about the Water Street hill.


"It was my first time running the course and that finishing hill reminded me of Rose City."


The Thomasville Rose City Run, by the way, is a race that Lake has won four times. Not everyone has curses and nightmare tales about the Water Street hill.


The race started at 8:15 AM on West Washington Street, Monticello's local name for US 90. The runners turned north onto Hickory Street less than 200 yards into the race. On Walnut Street Chris Lake moved out front to stay. By the time Lake passed the mile mark in 5:00 he was in total control of the race. Behind him in second place, Zach DeVeau had also broken away from the rest of the field.


"Everyone was out there running alone today," said DeVeau.


Not quite everyone. In third place, Geb Kiros was leading the masters field after breaking away from Michael Martinez. During the third kilometer, though, master runner Carl Nordhielm overtook Martinez to move into fourth. Then Nordhielm started to chase down Kiros. By the base of the Water Street hill, Nordhielm had pulled within six seconds of Kiros with the finish line coming into sight.


"I glanced back and got worried," said Kiros. "I had a strong finish after that. I wanted to break 18:00."


He did. Lake had already won the race in 16:17, and Deveau was finishing runner-up in 17:18. Kiros motored up the hill, edging away from Nordhielm to hang onto third and the master runner title with a personal best 17:54. Nordhielm was the second master runner, fourth overall in 18:05. Martinez was third in the master standings, third overall in 18:26.


Three of the Melon Run's past women's champions were on the starting line for the 36th running--2011 women's winner Katie Sherron, the 2012 title-holder Seeley Gutierrez, and the 2013 champion Sheryl Rosen. Like Chris Lake in the men's competition, Gutierrez led the women's field early. For Gutierrez, a triathlete, pacing was a concern.


"When you start the run in a triathlon, you're already tired," explained Gutierrez. "You don't feel good enough to go out too fast."


Gutierrez's steady running was fast enough to keep her out in front of the rest of the women's field, though. Neither Rosen nor Sherron challenged her. In fact, after the first kilometer, Rosen was third in the women's field behind Jillian Heddaeus and Sherron was in sixth.


"I ran conservatively because it had been so long since I raced," said Rosen, who is recovering from an injury.


Seeley Gutierrez ended up winning the women's competition by nearly a minute, coming in ninth overall in 19:08. Sheryl Rosen moved up during the race to finish second in the women's standings, 13th overall in 20:02. Sherron likewise gained a few places, finishing third on the women's side in 20:28, good for 16th overall. Anna Busby took the fourth women's spot, 18th in 20:49. Jillian Heddaeus slipped back to fifth, coming in 20th overall in 21:02.


The Melon Run course has changed over 36 years, and the race didn't always finish with a climb up Water Street. Each year, however, there has always been watermelon at the finish for the runners. Of the two traditions, the hill and the watermelon, the watermelon is more popular as well as more enduring.


"Every run should have watermelon," commented one runner.


Sadly, that's not the case. But one run certainly does have watermelon--the Monticello Kiwanis annual 5K Melon Run.

Sullivan and Gutierrez win at a soaked Springtime

On March 20, Kevin Sullivan turned 40, joining the ranks of master runners. Just nine days later he owned the Springtime 10K record for masters, winning the 39th annual race in 32:03. It was Sullivan's second straight Springtime victory. Just over a minute and a half behind Sullivan, three-time Springtime champion Chris Lake took second in 33:37. Seeley Gutierrez captured the women's title, placing 13th overall in 38:09. The top woman master was Carrie Seiberlich, third woman and 36th overall in 41:16.


More than 700 athletes finished the 6.2-mile race, but more than a few stayed away when they woke up to rain and rumbling thunder the Saturday of the race. The last lightning flashed before dawn, though, and as racetime approached the rain slowed to an intermittent drizzle. The Springtime 10K started as scheduled from in front of the Leon County Courthouse at 8:10 AM.


Vince Molosky led the field early, reaching the mile mark out front in 5:04. That was a faster pace than he was going to run that morning, though. Just after the mile Molosky was overtaken by a group of four runners; Kevin Sullivan, Eric Larson, Stephen Cox, and Chris Lake. As the leaders turned onto Lafayette Street and started their climb into the Myers Park hills, Sullivan made a break.


"I was dead even with Kevin for a mile and a quarter," recalled Cox. "Then the rest of the race happened."


By the two-mile mark Kevin Sullivan had opened a twelve-second gap. Chris Lake moved ahead of Chris Larson and Stephen Cox, but he was still losing ground to Sullivan. A little more than halfway through the race Lake had a solid grip on second, and Larson had passed Cox to stake a claim on third. Sullivan was so far ahead, though, that even Lake was only occasionally catching a glimpse of him on the road ahead.


In the end, that was the order they crossed the finish line. Kevin Sullivan of Capital City Runners first in 32:03, followed by Chris Lake in 33:37, Eric Larson third in 34:16, and Stephen Cox fourth in 34:20.


Seeley Gutierrez led the Springtime 10K women's field from start to finish. Katie Sherron, however, had to run down master runner Carrie Seiberlich for the runner-up spot in the women's standings. Seiberlich was the second woman through two miles, and it was only on the third mile that Sherron was able to catch her. Gutierrez never had to look back, taking the women's title in 38:09. Sherron was the second woman finisher, 26th overall in 40:09. At 41:16, Seiberlich took third on the women's side.

For the eighth year Springtime included a 5K option, with the runners in the 3.1-mile race starting at the same time as the 10K. Adam Greenstein won the shorter race in 17:50. Amy Hines was the top woman, coming in second overall in 18:17. 443 athletes finished the 5K.

Linton and Gutierrez try, try again...and win, at the Flash 12K

In 2012 Stanley Linton finished the Flash 12K second to Stephen Cox. In 2013 he finished the Flash 12K second to Kevin Sullivan. But in 2014 Stanley Linton finished the Flash 12K second to no one, winning the 26th annual race in 39:39. In the women's competition, Seeley Gutierrez had first run the Flash in 1999, but at the 2014 race she picked up her first title in four tries, finishing sixth overall in 45:20. Gutierrez' time was the fastest run by a woman in the race since 1998, when Sarah Williams posted a winning 45:12.


More than 300 athletes gathered in St. Mark outside Fort San Marcos de Apalachee on Saturday morning, 15 February 2014, to run either the Flash 12K or the concurrent 6K race. Stanley Linton and 2006 Flash 12K champion Vince Molosky quickly left the rest of the field behind, running side by side. After two kilometers, as the runners headed north on the St Marks Trail, Linton edged ahead, opening a gap. By four kilometers Linton had widened that gap to 100 meters. That lead grew to more than 600 meters by the time Linton returned to Fort San Marcos and the finish line, winning the 12K in 39:39. Molosky was runner-up in 41:48. Zach DeVeau took third in 43:16. Carl Nordhielm was the top master runner in the race, finishing fourth overall in 44:38.


Four kilometers into race Seeley Gutierrez and Emily Ness were just a few steps apart, leading the women's field. Ness fell back, though, leaving the race to Gutierrez, who went on to win the women's race in 45:20. Katie Sherron, the top woman at the 2012 Flash 12K, was second in the women's standings, 18th overall in 48:45. Mary Anne Grayson of Thomasville, Georgia, was the third woman finisher and the first woman master, 33rd overall in 52:13. After challenging for the lead in the first half of the race, Ness was the fourth woman in the 12K, 34th overall in 52:45.

Wakulla High junior cross-country runner Lane Williams set the early pace in the Flash 6K, but master runner Jon Mason was the first to the finish line, winning the 3.73-mile race in 21:56. Williams was runner-up in 22:17. Sarah Taff was the first female finisher, placing tenth overall in 28:15. The women's runner-up was the first woman master, Sharon Sollohub, 13th overall in 29:12.


Mark Priddy directed the Flash 12K and 6K for Gulf Winds Track Club. 262 athletes finished the 12K, and another 85 completed the 6K.

Tough mudders Molosky and McDermott win a messy GWTC 30K

Some years ago, a Florida State University softball player asked me, "Oh! Do you play softball, too?"


"No," I said. I had never even managed to hit a ball out of the infield in middle school. "Why do you ask?"


"Well, your socks are stained orange."


The orange tinge of my athletic socks, though, wasn't from the red clay of a softball infield, but from running on red clay roads like Old Centerville Road, Sunny Hill Road, and Beth Page Road. Once the iron-rich soil that makes up the Red Hills gets into your clothes you'll never get it out again. Some 200 athletes got to learn that first hand on a rainy Saturday morning, 11 January 2014, when they raced the Gulf Winds Track Club 30K and 15K over muddy Old Centerville and Sunny Hill Roads.


Earlier rains had already soaked the road when the 37th annual Gulf Winds Track Club 30K started from the Retreat at Bradley's Pond at 8:00 AM. Vince Molosky took the lead early, setting a torrid pace. Molosky hadn't missed racing the 30K since his first time at the race in 2008. He had won each year from 2008 to 2011, and had never finished lower than third place. In his muddy seventh attempt he was looking for a fifth win. By 10K into the race he was well on his way, running four and a half minutes ahead of the next runner, Eric Godin. Stephen Cox was in third, half a minute behind Godin. Another half a minute back, Tallahassee master runner Tony Guillen held fourth. By the 20K mark, Molosky had expanded his lead to six minutes, but Cox had moved into second. Over the last ten kilometers on the sloppy roads, Cox started to eat away at Molosky's lead. Molosky was too far ahead to be caught, though, and finished the race in 1:57:29, winning the GWTC 30K for a fifth time. Nearly four minutes later Cox took second in 2:01:28. Eric Godin was third in 2:09:15. Tony Guillen was the top master in the field, taking fourth in 2:14:07.


Katie Sherron led the women's competition early during the 2014 GWTC 30K. Sherron reached 10K nearly three minutes before her nearest rival, Laura McDermott. It wasn't Sherron's day, though. McDermott passed Sherron just before the 20K mark and started to pull away. Sherron continued to fade, and McDermott went on to take the women's title, finishing 14th overall in 2:34:23. Kory Skrob was the women's runner up and top woman master, coming in 16th overall in 2:44:09. Nikky Manausa was third in the women's standings, finishing 17th overall in 2:46:25. Sarah Dugas was the fourth woman finisher, 20th overall in 2:50:21.

The 15K turned into a duel of two past champions. Stanley Linton, a second-year mathematics major at Florida State, had won the 9.3-mile race in 2012. Sukhi Khosla had finished five minutes behind Linton in 2012, but had won the race in 2013, beating Linton's time by half a minute. Khosla had continued to improve since the 2013 race, winning the FHSAA-3A state cross-country title in November.


Linton pulled away after the first mile, taking the lead. Khosla hadn't gone away, though. Near the five-mile mark, just after the runners turned around to head back toward the finish line, Khosla caught Linton. About two miles later Khosla took the lead on a major uphill. Linton remained in contact till the ninth mile, which Khosla covered in 5:20. That surge broke the race open, and Khosla ran home first in 51:06, just missing the course record of 51:05 set by Will Stanford in 2009. Linton was second in 51:18. After that it was a long wait for 58:53 and the third finisher, Leon cross-country runner Jarod Hoffman. In eighth place, David Knauf outdueled Mickey Moore for the top master spot, 60:55 to 61:04. Behind Moore in tenth place, Seeley Gutierrez took the women's title with a 61:27. Kathy Andrews was the first woman master in the 15K, placing 29th overall in 70:18.

Seitz and Rosen speed through Southwood to Turkey Trot 15K titles

Long before anyone else arrived in Southwood for the Tallahassee Turkey Trot, there were people out there getting ready for the races. Setting up timing equipment. Stocking water tables. Delivering 56 portable toilets. Oh, and marking the course.

"I'm still sore from bending over to draw arrows on the road," said Bill McGuire after the last runner had left Southwood.


McGuire's diamond dust course markers will be gone with the next rain. But for a few hours on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 29, those arrows were appreciated by almost 5,000 athletes trying to find their way around Southwood in one of the four races of the 38th annual Turkey Trot.


After the one-mile fun run at 8:00 AM, the three longer races--15K, 10K, and 5K--all started at 8:30 from the same starting line on Esplanade Way. In the feature event, the 15K, Josh Seitz set the early pace, leading Caleb Carmichael and five-time Turkey Trot champ Chris Lake. By halfway through the race Seitz, a volunteer assistant track coach at Florida State, was almost a minute ahead and going away, leaving Carmichael and Lake in a race for second. Seitz cruised through the second half of the Turkey Trot, winning the 9.3-mile run in 49:59, more than a quarter mile ahead of the next runner. Carmichael finished second in 51:30, with Lake third in 53:13. In fourth place at 55:05, Gary Droze was the first master runner in the race.


On the women's side, Sheryl Rosen ran 57:11, her fastest Turkey Trot 15K yet, to win a second straight Turkey Trot women's title. It was the Tallahassee lawyer's fifth win at the 9.3-mile race in the last eight years. Behind Rosen, 2010 Turkey Trot champ Allison Eagen finished second in the women's standings with a 1:02:07, good for 17th overall. Adriana Piekarewicz was right behind Eagen, 18th overall in 1:02:22.

Also picking up a second straight Turkey Trot win, Stanley Linton led the 10K from wire to wire, running 32:38. Linton was over a quarter mile ahead of runner-up Stephen Cox, who ran 34:06 for the 6.2-miles. USC Upstate distance runner Riley Doherty, back home for Thanksgiving, was third in 34:52. Tallahassee triathlete Seeley Gutierrez ran with Sheryl Rosen till the 10K course and 15K course separated, then Gutierrez ran alone to the 10K finish line to win the women's title in that race, placing eighth overall in 38:00. Renee Cox was the second woman finisher in the 10K, coming in ahead of Kate Harrison, 41:40 to 41:59.

With the 15K, the 10K, and the 5K starting together, you'd expect the athletes in the shortest race up front. True to those expectations University of North Florida freshman Joseph Garcia, the early leader in the 5K, had everyone in the three races chasing him--more than 4,000 runners--as he raced up Shumard Oak Boulevard. Unfortunately for the Lincoln High alumnus, he was setting a pace he couldn't handle. Shortly after the mile mark, Kevin Sullivan of Capital City Runners passed Garcia, and that was the race. Sullivan went on to win the 3.1-mile race in 15:28, the fastest road 5K in Tallahassee this year. Remy Tamer and Peter Wood also overtook Garcia, finishing second and third in 15:56 and 16:24. Garcia was fourth in 16:28. Halfway through the 5K, Emily Ness of Capital City Runners led the women's competition in the race, with Lisa Johnson only four seconds back. Ness couldn't be caught, though, and beat Johnson for the title 18:36 to 18:45.

Among the volunteers on the course, the Wakulla High cross-country team staffed a water table out near the seven-mile mark of the 15K course. It wasn't part of the 10K course, so the Wakulla crew never got to see their alumnus, Stanley Linton, race by. Nevertheless, Linton trekked out there after the race to help his alma mater hand out water to 15K runners. Some run, some volunteer. A few do both.
