Josiah Friddle edges Nathaniel Cabrera to win the first Honoring The Brave 5K

Honoring The Brave 5K logoNot waiting for Memorial Day Monday, Apalachicola, Florida began recognizing the fallen at the opening of the weekend with the Honoring The Brave 5K road race on Saturday morning, 24 May 2025. At the finish line, the race came down to a duel between two Franklin County High distance runners--senior Josiah Friddle and sophomore Nathaniel Cabrera. Friddle prevailed, edging Cabrera 19:59 to 20:00. Master runner Laura McDermott was the first woman in the race, placing fourth overall in 22:39.


Behind Friddle and Cabrera, Andy Stinkbrink took third in the race with a 22:15. The first male master in the 5K was Aldin Mathews, the fifth male finisher and eighth overall in 24:24.


Another Franklin County High cross-country runner, sophomore Addyson Paul, took second in the women's standings, coming in sixth overall in 23:52. A few steps behind Paul, Hailey Morrison was the third female finisher and seventh overall in 23:56. Morrison is a seventh-grader on the Wewahitchka High cross-country team.


76 athletes finished the inaugural Honoring The Brave 5K. The race was a benefit for the Franklin County School track and field teaam and the Franklin County Sheriff's Office Charity Fund.

Leonardo Canete and Laura McDermott stage a Tallahassee sweep of the Summer Sizzler

Saint George Island is in the Gulf Of Mexico, a barrier island off the Florida Panhandle. Its neighbors on the mainland are Eastpoint and Apalachicola. Less than 70 miles away are the suburbs of Panama City, Florida. You'd have to drive nearly 80 miles to get to Tallahassee, the state capital. Yet when Saint George Island hosted the 25th Summer Sizzler 5K on Saturday evening, 22 July 2023, it was athletes from the Capital City who dominated the competition, as two Tallahassee master runners took the overall titles. Leonardo Canete was the first man in the race, crossing the line first in 17:34, and Laura McDermott was the first woman, placing eleventh overall in 23:22.


Canete won the race by over 200 meters. It was his second time running the Sizzler; he had finished runner-up to Stan Linton in the 2022 event. At 18:24, Tallahassee's Ryan Truchelut finished second to Canete. Not far behind, Brad Busboom of Tallahassee was third in 18:30.


Like Canete, Laura McDermott was also running her second Sizzler, but her first had been way back in 2010. After McDermott, two Franklin County High cross-country runners broke the Tallahassee stranglehold on the top places. Frosh year athlete Addyson Paul was second in the women's standings, placing thirteenth overall in 24:05, while eighth-grader Isabella Polous was the third woman and fifteenth overall in 24:20. Master runner Stephanie Liles-Weyant, women's champ of the 2008 Sizzler, was the fourth woman in the 2023 race, coming in seventeenth overall in 24:30.


80 athletes finished the 2023 Sizzler 5K. Miles and Minutes, LLC, of Tallahassee, Florida chip-timed the race. The Sizzler was a fundraiser for the Elder Care Community Council of Franklin County.

Chris Jones leaves the field far, far behind at the Dr. Eric Dueno Memorial 10K

No one else had run nine kilometers when Chris Jones finished the ten kilometers of the fourth annual Dr. Eric Dueno Memorial Run in Bainbridge, Georgia on Saturday morning, 28 September 2019. Jones winning time in the 6.2-mile race was 36:07, taking more than four minutes off the event record. Tallahassee, Florida master runner Julia Sura was the first woman in the 10K, placing eighth overall in 58:53.


Donalsonville, Georgia master runner Myles Gibson placed second to Jones in the 10K, running 40:26. Just a week earlier, Gibson had won a different road 10K, the Trot With S.W.A.T. in Dothan, Alabama. Master runner Pauncho Hufstetler, the 2019 Dueno 10K champions, took third in 40:34.


Master runner Liv Warren finished runner-up in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 65:25. Victoria Gallagher was the third female finisher and twelfth overall in 66:22.

The 10K was added to the program of the Dueno Memorial Run in 2018, but the 5K race has been part of the event ever since it was inaugurated in 2017. Dustin Richardson won the shorter race in 2019, running 21:19. At 23:14, the overall-runner-up, Laura McDermott, was the first woman in the race.

Joey Harvey was the first master runner in the 5K and the second male finisher, third overall in 26:09. Paula Grollman was the first female master, fourth in the women's standings and seventh overall in 30:31.

Lucas Mauch and Laura McDermott were the victors in the fifth Warrior Run

At Brookwood School in Thomasville, Georgia, Saturday, 3 November 2018 dawned with classical cross-country weather. The sky was clear, the air was dry, and temperatures were in the 40s. It was the first time during the autumn of 2018 that it had actually felt like cross-country season. Too bad cross-country season had ended for the Brookwood Warriors a week earlier at the GISA State Cross-Country Championship. But that didn't mean Brookwood couldn't host a race. That very day, as luck would have it, the school had scheduled their fifth annual Warrior Run 5K. Lucas Mauch of Tallahassee, Florida won the race, running 18:33. Another Tallahassee runner, Laura McDermott, was the first overall woman, posting a 20:51.

Back in Tallahassee, Mauch is an eighth-grader at Maclay School, where he runs on the school's cross-country team. Like Brookwood, Mauch's season had ended on 27 October 2018. His last race had been the middle school boys' 3K at the Florida Youth Running Association State Cross-Country Championship.


"I ran decent," shrugged Mauch. "11:41 for 3K. Not great."


It was good enough to put Mauch second on his team, helping the Maclay boys to a 26th place showing in the State Championship.

At the Warrior Run, Mauch started off with the leaders. The course was three laps around a circuit of the Brookwood campus, starting on the track of Warrior Stadium and finishing at the Warrior decorating the turf on the center of the football field. Before the end of the first loop, Mauch had the lead to himself. Behind him, Tallahassee master runner Paul Hodge steadily picked off the athletes that had tried to stay with Mauch, but Hodge didn't make up any ground on the Maclay runner.


"I pushed myself," said Mauch. "I push myself as hard as I can. I didn't even look at the clock."

When Mauch crossed the finish line, that clock showed that he had won the race in 18:33. Hodge took second.


First woman Laura McDermott came in fourth overall, her 20:51 her best time ever for five kilometers.


"It was nice!" said McDermott. "It was cold!"

With cool air and a flat course, several runners ran good times. Some speculated that the race was short. Without USATF certification you can never be sure. But more than a few people insisted that they'd be back for the next Warrior Run.

Kurt Dietrich and Laura McDermott take first at Run 2-1-1

The fifth annual Run 2-1-1 5K on Saturday morning, 2 June 2018, was Kurt Dietrich’s fourth five-kilometer race in Tallahassee since early May. When it was over, Dietrich had his fourth 5K win since early May. Dietrich was first across the finish line in Railroad Square Art Park, running 18:26. Laura McDermott was the first woman in the 3.1-mile race, placing sixth overall in 22:01.

2-1-1 Big Bend, a non-profit mental health hotline, has held the Run 2-1-1 each year since 2014. The early races were in Southwood, but in 2018 the organization moved the race to Railroad Square, with a course that took in the Capital Cascades Trail and Cascades Park. Close to a hundred athletes showed up to race at the new venue.


“There were lots of turns, especially in Cascades Park,” said McDermott, the women’s winner. “But it was well marked. I had no trouble following the course. I always knew where to go.”

Other runners commented on the scenery along the route--the landscaping along the Cascades Trail/FAMU Way corridor, Lake Anita, and the Cascades Park Bridge. Two years earlier, at the ribbon cutting for that section of the Cascades Trail, Mayor Andrew Gillum had declared, “This is what an All-American city looks like.”


Kurt Dietrich didn’t dawdle to look around during the Run 2-1-1, though. Just minutes into the race he was well ahead of the field. Enijah Thomas, a rising seventh-grader on the Fairview Middle School cross-country team, trailed Dietrich in second. Chris Myrick overtook Thomas in Cascades Park, early in the second mile of the race, but no one was catching Dietrich. His winning 18:26 put him nearly a quarter mile ahead of the next runner. Myrick took second in 19:59, and Carson McGinn was third in 21:43. Enijah Thomas held off Michael Kennett to take fourth, both runners clocked in 22:00. Kennett was the first master runner in the race.

At 22:01, a step or two behind Kennett, McDermott took the women's title. Monica Toth was the women's runner-up and eighth overall in 22:50. Jasmin McClellan was third in the women's standings, placing eleventh overall in 23:55. Wendy Rude was the top woman master and fourth female finisher, fifteenth overall in 24:50.


98 athletes finished the 2018 Run 2-1-1 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.

Duane Evans and Laura McDermott ran best at the Bobcat

It was a chilly morning in Tallahassee, Florida on Saturday, 24 March 2018, the kind of temperatures that make you think of high school or college cross-country season. That comes in the autumn, though, and it was definitely spring, as evidenced by the budding leaves and blooming flowers. Regardless of the season, more than 200 athletes showed up at the Alford Greenway for some cross-country running at Buck Lake Elementary School’s second annual Bobcat 5K Family Trail Run. Crawfordville, Florida master runner Duane Evans was the fastest of the 114 who finished the 5K, the main event, winning the race in 20:07. Laura McDermott of Tallahassee, a teacher at Buck Lake, was the first woman in the race, placing third overall in 21:34.

The morning opened with a one-mile fun run at 8:30 AM. The 5K, scheduled for 9:00, started closer to 9:10. A crowd of youngsters charged out into the lead, but their exuberance only lasted them through the first 400 meters. Their pace slowed as they began to realize just how long 5000 meters is. Evans moved ahead of them. With ten years of racing experience, he knew exactly how far he was going.


“I didn’t start running till I was 40,” said Evans. “The competitive bug just kind of bit me. I used to watch my son run at North Florida Christian, and they would have open races. I would see guys my age racing, and thought, ‘Hey, I could do that.’”

He could, and he did, and ten years later he still was. Halfway through the Bobcat 5K Evans was more than 100 meters ahead of the next runner. By the end of the race he had widened that margin to nearly 300 meters, crossing the finish line in a winning 20:07. Thirteen-year old Connor Edwards was second in 21:24. Seventeen-year-old David Guhl was third in the men's standings and fourth overall in 22:05.


“I like this course,” said Evans. “It’s tough, but I like it. I’ve run the Bluebird 5K out here and I remember the grass being taller.”

Evans had indeed run the Bluebird Run for Brookie B 5K at the Alford Greenway in 2015, running 20:38. A September race, the grass is usually thicker at the Greenway at that time of year, having had all summer to grow. But the course at the Greenway isn't all grass. There's also crushed oyster shell paths, dirt, gravel, and loose sand.


“There was a lot of variety out there,” said Evans. “But it was all uphill!”

“It’s really pretty,” said Laura McDermott, the women’s champ, describing the course. “But I’m usually looking at the ground.”


That’s not a bad idea in cross-country, where a root can catch your toe and have you on the ground. But McDermott navigated the tricky footing more than successfully, improving on her performance in the inaugural Bobcat 5K. In the 2017 run, she had been second in the women’s division in 21:49; a year later she was first in 21:34.

When you’re going to the Alford Greenway, just before you arrive you pass by Swift Creek Middle School. It was an eighth-grader from Swift Creek, Elise Ferguson, who was runner-up to McDermott in the women’s standings. Ferguson, a member of the Swift Creek cross-country team, placed thirteenth overall in 25:45. Laura York was the first woman master and third female finisher, nineteenth overall in 27:16.


Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the 2018 Bobcat 5K as well as the one-mile fun run.

Droze and McDermott run fast at Run With The Moose

2016 is an election year so you hear a lot about polls. Sample size is an important consideration when discussing public opinion polls. Most presidential preference polls use a sample size of about a thousand. By polling that many people, you get a fairly accurate statistic--within the "3% margin of error" that you see in the fine print accompanying so many poll results. To bring the margin of error down to 2% you'd need to poll many more people--a sample size of about 2500. Smaller sample sizes, on the other hand, will increase your error. Very small samples could give you bizarre results. Quincy, Florida's annual Run With The Moose 5K has only been around for four years, so if you take as your sample the winners of that race, you'd have a tiny sample indeed. You'd also end up concluding that half of all overall winners of road races are women, and that the other half are named Droze.

2016 is not only an election year, it was a Droze year. On Saturday morning, 15 October 2016, Gary Droze won the fourth Run With The Moose 5K in 18:16, finishing close to 200 meters ahead of the next runner. Tallahassee school teacher Laura McDermott was the first woman in the race, placing fifth overall in 22:38.


That sample size could have been even smaller. After holding the Run With The Moose each year from 2010 to 2012, the Quincy chapter of the Moose Lodge shelved the race. The Loyal Order of the Moose revived the event after a four-year hiatus, but with a few changes. Instead of a summer run, the race was now in October, a less torrid month. The course was the same, but now it was USATF certified, a guarantee that the athletes would actually be running five kilometers. Improvements? You'd think so. On the other hand, anyone who ran slow couldn't point to the torrid summer weather or speculate that the course was long. The runner had a better event, but they had lost two excellent excuses for poor performance.

If you wanted a reason for running less than your best, though, the course still included some huge hills. After starting north on Shelfer Street, the runners turned east onto King Street and plunged into a ravine, a branch of Quincy Creek. After racing to the bottom the athletes had to struggle up the other side of the depression. Late in the race, the runners had to make another trip in and out of the ravine on their way to the finish line. It wasn't a second visit to look forward to.


On the outward journey, Gary Droze, Tallahassee Community College's cross-country coach, was the first one out of the defile. His challenges for the rest of the race didn't come from rival athletes, but from the law enforcement vehicle escorting the runners. Droze kept overtaking that lead car, which wasn't often a comfortable distance ahead.

But Coach Droze overcame both hills and hydrocarbons to win the race in 18:16. Tallahassee runner Paul Guyas took second in 19:04, and "Marathon Jack" McDermott was third in 20:10.


"That was tough!" declared Laura McDermott after clearing the final hill on the course.


But that was less than 200 meters from the finish line, at which point it was all over but the cheering. McDermott got the women's title, finishing fifth in 22:38. Monica Judd was the first woman master and second female finisher, seventh overall in 23:59. Tallahassee master runner Paula O'Neill was third in the women's standings and ninth overall in 24:10.

46 athletes completed the 2016 Run With The Moose, not a bad turnout for a race back from the dead after four years. Proceeds of the race went to benefit the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer campaign of the American Cancer Society.

Mark Tombrink wins the Tallahassee Ultra-Distance Classic 50 mile

Charlie Johnson"What's up with this?" said Charlie Johnson. "This isn't like a marathon. It's five miles farther!"


That's a fair description of a 50K run, like the 50K Johnson was in the middle of on Saturday morning, 12 December 2015. He was in the last few minutes of that race, finishing up the fifth and final lap around a ten-kilometer loop at Wakulla Springs State Park, south of Tallahassee, Florida. When it was over Johnson had won the 35th annual Tallahassee Ultra-Distance Classic 50K in 3:25:21, completing the 31-mile event nearly four miles ahead of the next runner. Compared to that margin, the race for second place looks like a dead heat. Tallahassee athlete Charn McAllister took that runner-up spot in 3:53:45, just a quarter mile ahead of third-place finisher Jack McDermott. McDermott, also from Tallahassee, was the top master runner in the 50K, finishing in 3:55:46. McDermott was the defending champion in the race and had also won it in 2008. Johnson, on the other hand, had never run the Tallahassee Ultra-Distance Classic before, although he had been one of the many volunteers that work to produce the race.


Laura McDermottTallahassee schoolteacher Laura McDermott took the women's title in the 50K, finishing seventh overall in 4:28:51. Placing sixteenth overall in 5:08:36, Kelly Garland edged Tsige Tadesse for top woman master and second female finisher. Tadesse was seventeenth in 5:08:44.


The 50K wasn't the only race at the 2015 Tallahassee Ultra-Distance Classic, nor was it the longest. While Charlie Johnson was leading the field through the 50K, a smaller group of athletes was attempting the 50-mile race, eight laps around the ten-kilometer loop. Gainesville, Florida's Ferit Toska had won the longer race each of the last three years and was looking to make it four in a row. He made a good start of it, leading through the first half of the race. While Toska worked to defend his title, Tallahassee runner Mark Tombrink labored in second. Tombrink was eventually joined by Trevor Sununu, a second-year student at Florida State University.


Trevor caught me about the third lap," said Tombrink. "We ran together for a few laps, but it was the sixth lap when I got away from him."


Trevor Sununu, Mark TombrinkAs Tombrink and Sununu dueled, Ferit Toska was running into trouble. The races had started at 7:00 AM, but as the miles added up so did the hours. The morning ended, the afternoon started, and it became clear that this was an unseasonably warm December day. Several runners left the race with leg cramps. Toska was one of them.


"I saw Ferit stopped with one leg up," recalled Tombrink. "I thought there was a good chance I could catch him."


Toska never finished the 50-mile. Tombrink did. Wearing a long-sleeved black shirt in spite of the conditions, he won the race in 6:50:50. Tombrink had finished the 50-miler each of the two previous years, but this was by far his fastest run. Orlando's Tyler Booth was second in 7:30:40, and master runner Rich Flint of Astatula, Florida, was third in 8:04:31. Trevor Sununu finished the 50-mile fourth in 8:04:31. Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, master runner Holly Bohensky was the top woman, placing fifth overall in 8:29:05.

Tough mudders Molosky and McDermott win a messy GWTC 30K

Old Centerville Road mudSome years ago, a Florida State University softball player asked me, "Oh! Do you play softball, too?"


"No," I said. I had never even managed to hit a ball out of the infield in middle school. "Why do you ask?"


"Well, your socks are stained orange."


The orange tinge of my athletic socks, though, wasn't from the red clay of a softball infield, but from running on red clay roads like Old Centerville Road, Sunny Hill Road, and Beth Page Road. Once the iron-rich soil that makes up the Red Hills gets into your clothes you'll never get it out again. Some 200 athletes got to learn that first hand on a rainy Saturday morning, 11 January 2014, when they raced the Gulf Winds Track Club 30K and 15K over muddy Old Centerville and Sunny Hill Roads.


Vince MoloskyEarlier rains had already soaked the road when the 37th annual Gulf Winds Track Club 30K started from the Retreat at Bradley's Pond at 8:00 AM. Vince Molosky took the lead early, setting a torrid pace. Molosky hadn't missed racing the 30K since his first time at the race in 2008. He had won each year from 2008 to 2011, and had never finished lower than third place. In his muddy seventh attempt he was looking for a fifth win. By 10K into the race he was well on his way, running four and a half minutes ahead of the next runner, Eric Godin. Stephen Cox was in third, half a minute behind Godin. Another half a minute back, Tallahassee master runner Tony Guillen held fourth. By the 20K mark, Molosky had expanded his lead to six minutes, but Cox had moved into second. Over the last ten kilometers on the sloppy roads, Cox started to eat away at Molosky's lead. Molosky was too far ahead to be caught, though, and finished the race in 1:57:29, winning the GWTC 30K for a fifth time. Nearly four minutes later Cox took second in 2:01:28. Eric Godin was third in 2:09:15. Tony Guillen was the top master in the field, taking fourth in 2:14:07.


Laura McDermottKatie Sherron led the women's competition early during the 2014 GWTC 30K. Sherron reached 10K nearly three minutes before her nearest rival, Laura McDermott. It wasn't Sherron's day, though. McDermott passed Sherron just before the 20K mark and started to pull away. Sherron continued to fade, and McDermott went on to take the women's title, finishing 14th overall in 2:34:23. Kory Skrob was the women's runner up and top woman master, coming in 16th overall in 2:44:09. Nikky Manausa was third in the women's standings, finishing 17th overall in 2:46:25. Sarah Dugas was the fourth woman finisher, 20th overall in 2:50:21.

2014 Gulf Winds Track Club 30KThe 15K turned into a duel of two past champions. Stanley Linton, a second-year mathematics major at Florida State, had won the 9.3-mile race in 2012. Sukhi Khosla had finished five minutes behind Linton in 2012, but had won the race in 2013, beating Linton's time by half a minute. Khosla had continued to improve since the 2013 race, winning the FHSAA-3A state cross-country title in November.


Linton pulled away after the first mile, taking the lead. Khosla hadn't gone away, though. Near the five-mile mark, just after the runners turned around to head back toward the finish line, Khosla caught Linton. About two miles later Khosla took the lead on a major uphill. Linton remained in contact till the ninth mile, which Khosla covered in 5:20. That surge broke the race open, and Khosla ran home first in 51:06, just missing the course record of 51:05 set by Will Stanford in 2009. Linton was second in 51:18. After that it was a long wait for 58:53 and the third finisher, Leon cross-country runner Jarod Hoffman. In eighth place, David Knauf outdueled Mickey Moore for the top master spot, 60:55 to 61:04. Behind Moore in tenth place, Seeley Gutierrez took the women's title with a 61:27. Kathy Andrews was the first woman master in the 15K, placing 29th overall in 70:18.
