Duane Evans and Georgina Hernandez gave 'em the runaround at Chattahoochee's River Runaround

Chattahoochee River Runaround 5KBuilt on the bluffs overlooking the Flint and Apalachicola Rivers, Chattahoochee, Florida is 60 feet above sea level at its lowest and more than 250 feet above sea level at its highest. With that kind of topography, you'd think that any five-kilometer race you ran in that small town would feature a lot of up and down. But the athletes in the inaugural Chattahoochee River Runaround 5K on Saturday morning, 17 May 2025, were treated to a course that was almost level. Hugging the shore of the rivers, the Runaround so effectively avoided Chattahoochee's hills that the main challenge facing the field was the distance of the race. Master runner Duane Evans met that challenge best, covering the course in a winning 20:56. Georgina Hernandez was the first woman in the race, placing fifth overall in 23:29.

Master runner Richard Reesor took the runner-up spot, running 22:19. Thirteen-year-old Ian Bryner was third in 22:28.

Megan Orcutt was the first woman master and second female finisher, coming in sixth overall in 23:47. Hillary Powell took third in the women's standings, placing seventh overall in 24:20.

89 athletes finished the 2025 Chattahaoochee River Runaround 5K. Ultimate Racing, Inc., of Saint Augustine, Florida timed and scored the race.

Duane Evans and Alexis Mayfield lead the field at the Tate's Hell 5K

Tate's Hell 5KFlorida's Tate's Hell Swamp is purportedly named after Cebe Tate, who, as the tale goes, got lost in the swamp near Sumatra and wandered for miles, snakebit and feverish, before stumbling out again near Carrabelle.

The athletes in the eighth annual Tate's Hell And Back 5K had an easier time of it than the storied Cebe. Instead of a trackless slog through the swamp, on Saturday morning, 7 October 2023, they had a well-marked run on the grounds of Carrabelle, Florida's Saint James Bay Golf Resort. Crawfordville, Florida master runner Duane Evans took first in the 5K, running 20:42. Alexis Mayfield, a member of the Swift Creek Middle School girls' cross-country team, was overall runner-up and first in the women's division with a 21:02.

It was the second Tate's Hell 5K win for Evans, who had also won the race in 2021. Christopher Coddington was second to Evans in the men's standings, placing third overall in 21:21. Chris Matechik was the third male finisher and fifth overall in 23:39.

Laura McDermott was the first woman master in the race as well as the second female finisher, fourth overall in 22:56. A teacher at Buck Lake Elementary in Tallahassee, Florida, McDermnott is also a coach of the Swift Creek team that Alexis Mayfield belongs to. Jessica Brieno took third in the women's standings with a 24:21.

The Tate's Hell 5K was run in conjunction with Carrabelle's Bay Fest, an annual charity event.

Master runners Duane Evans and Loranne Ausley take the field to school at the Race For Pace

In Tallahassee, Florida the Race For Pace 5K benefits the Pace School For Girls. Master runner Duane Evans led the entire field, winning the race in 21:47. Master runner Loranne Ausley was first in the women's field, placing eleventh overall in 26:37.

Many trailed Duane Evans and Madison Sims at the Trail Life 5K

2018 Trail Life 5KBecause of Hurricane Michael, autumn of 2018 was a season of canceled races in the Florida panhandle, and even as far east as Tallahassee. Saturday morning, 17 November 2018, saw a return to the normal in the Tallahassee-area racing calendar. Normal, of course, is ridiculously crowded. There were no fewer than three road races within a short drive of Tallahassee that morning. In the spirit of rebirth after the storm, each was a first-year race. One of those was the inaugural Trail Life 5K, south of Tallahassee in Crawfordville, Florida. Master runner Duane Evans won the 3.1-mile race, covering the distance in 19:50. Madison Sims, a sixth-grader at Fort Braden School, was the first woman in the race, placing third overall in 23:59.

Ten-year-old Grayson Stevens took the runner-up spot in the 5K with a 23:51. Master runner Michael Martin was third in the men's standings and fifth overall in 26:40.

Nancy Johnson was the first woman master and second female finisher, fourth overall in 25:45. Liliana Lewis, a sixth-grader at Wakulla Middle School, placed third on the women's side and sixth overall in 26:52.

The Trail Life 5K was the opening event of Trail Life Crawfordville's second annual Fall Festival. Trail Life Crawfordville is Troop FL-2327 of Trail Life USA, with describes itself as "a Christian Outdoor Adventure, Character, and Leadership Program for boys and young men. Trail Life Crawfordville is serious enough about their 5K to get the course USATF-certified (course number FL18042TY) and to hire professional timing for the race (Miles and Minutes, LLLC, of Tallahassee). 21 athletes finished the first year event on the streets of Crawfordville.

Duane Evans and Laura McDermott ran best at the Bobcat

It was a chilly morning in Tallahassee, Florida on Saturday, 24 March 2018, the kind of temperatures that make you think of high school or college cross-country season. That comes in the autumn, though, and it was definitely spring, as evidenced by the budding leaves and blooming flowers. Regardless of the season, more than 200 athletes showed up at the Alford Greenway for some cross-country running at Buck Lake Elementary School’s second annual Bobcat 5K Family Trail Run. Crawfordville, Florida master runner Duane Evans was the fastest of the 114 who finished the 5K, the main event, winning the race in 20:07. Laura McDermott of Tallahassee, a teacher at Buck Lake, was the first woman in the race, placing third overall in 21:34.

Duane Evans
Duane Evans

The morning opened with a one-mile fun run at 8:30 AM. The 5K, scheduled for 9:00, started closer to 9:10. A crowd of youngsters charged out into the lead, but their exuberance only lasted them through the first 400 meters. Their pace slowed as they began to realize just how long 5000 meters is. Evans moved ahead of them. With ten years of racing experience, he knew exactly how far he was going.

“I didn’t start running till I was 40,” said Evans. “The competitive bug just kind of bit me. I used to watch my son run at North Florida Christian, and they would have open races. I would see guys my age racing, and thought, ‘Hey, I could do that.’”

J R Alford Greenway
2018 Bobcat 5K

He could, and he did, and ten years later he still was. Halfway through the Bobcat 5K Evans was more than 100 meters ahead of the next runner. By the end of the race he had widened that margin to nearly 300 meters, crossing the finish line in a winning 20:07. Thirteen-year old Connor Edwards was second in 21:24. Seventeen-year-old David Guhl was third in the men's standings and fourth overall in 22:05.

“I like this course,” said Evans. “It’s tough, but I like it. I’ve run the Bluebird 5K out here and I remember the grass being taller.”

Connor Edwards, David Guhl
Connor Edwards & David Guhl

Evans had indeed run the Bluebird Run for Brookie B 5K at the Alford Greenway in 2015, running 20:38. A September race, the grass is usually thicker at the Greenway at that time of year, having had all summer to grow. But the course at the Greenway isn't all grass. There's also crushed oyster shell paths, dirt, gravel, and loose sand.

“There was a lot of variety out there,” said Evans. “But it was all uphill!”

Laura McDermott
Laura McDermott

“It’s really pretty,” said Laura McDermott, the women’s champ, describing the course. “But I’m usually looking at the ground.”

That’s not a bad idea in cross-country, where a root can catch your toe and have you on the ground. But McDermott navigated the tricky footing more than successfully, improving on her performance in the inaugural Bobcat 5K. In the 2017 run, she had been second in the women’s division in 21:49; a year later she was first in 21:34.

Elise Ferguson

When you’re going to the Alford Greenway, just before you arrive you pass by Swift Creek Middle School. It was an eighth-grader from Swift Creek, Elise Ferguson, who was runner-up to McDermott in the women’s standings. Ferguson, a member of the Swift Creek cross-country team, placed thirteenth overall in 25:45. Laura York was the first woman master and third female finisher, nineteenth overall in 27:16.

Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the 2018 Bobcat 5K as well as the one-mile fun run.

Evans and Spencer scurry to victory in the hills of Killearn

On Saturday morning, 12 March 2016, the competition was close behind Duane Evans, but it was still behind him. The Crawfordville master runner won the 28th Shamrock Scurry 5K, edging runner-up Philip Sura 19:51 to 19:57. Emma Spencer was the first woman in the race, placing fifteenth overall in 22:47. 436 athletes finished the 3.1-mile race through the streets of the Killearn Estates neighborhood on the north side of Tallahassee, Florida.

Duane Evans

The race started just after 8:30 AM from Killearn United Methodist Church. The competitors would return to the church for the finish line and post-race pancakes and sausage, but not before five hilly kilometers of running. The trek started with the field heading north on Shamrock Street West. Not quite a kilometer into the race, Duane Evans moved into the lead. During the second kilometer Tad David moved up to into second behind Evans, with David Welling and Philip Sura following.

The first half of the Shamrock Scurry course is punctuated by major downhills, but the second half is all about major uphills. The most severe comes near the three kilometer mark. Evans continued to lead at that point, but Welling had passed David to move into second, while Sura was challenging for third.

"I started easy and picked it up," recalled Sura, a Florida State University meteorology professor. "I started behind David Welling and Tad David and got them before the finish. I couldn't get Dwayne, though."

Philip Sura

Nor did he. One kilometer before the finish the runners reach Pancake Hill, the last climb before the finish line and the post-race pancake breakfast. Evans reached the foot of Pancake Hill first, but Sura had closed to within ten seconds. Neither runner gave ground on that final uphill. Sura continued to narrow the gap on the final stretch, but was never near enough to challenge Evans. Back at the church Evans was first in 19:51 and Sura second in 19:56, with Welling third in 20:03 and David fourth in 20:12.

Pancake Hill also featured in an episode in Emma Spencer's race.

"Right before the last hill someone told me there was a woman just six or seven feet behind me," said Spencer. "So I really pushed it after that."

Emma Spencer

Someone fibbed. Spencer had led the women's field since midway through the second kilometer, and reached the slopes of Pancake Hill more than a minute before the next woman. That lead didn't diminish on the way to the finish line; Spencer returned to the church in 22:47 with the women's title. Crystal Anderson was second in the women's standings, 34th overall in 24:12. Rachida Porter was the first woman master and third female finisher, 45th overall in 25:22. Julia Sura was fourth on the women's side, 46th overall in 25:36.

The Shamrock Scurry has a long history in Killearn. From 1981 to 1996 the race was held annually at Killearn United Methodist Church on a course close to the one used today. After an eight-year hiatus the race was revived on a series of courses that started at Celebration Baptist Church from 2004 to 2008. The Scurry disappeared again in 2009, but came back in 2010, returning to Killearn UMC. Since then the race has gone on every year on the present course, Pancake Hill and all. With those final seven years that makes a total of 28 races. If the fans of running, pancakes, and sausage have anything to say, there will be many more years to come.

DeVeau and Rosen first in the Flash

Zach DeVeauA brisk wind out of the south was at the runners' backs when they left the starting line of Gulf Winds Track Club's 27th annual Flash 12K on Saturday morning, 21 February 2015. The aiding breeze blew the athletes away from Fort San Marcos de Apalachee and up Fire Escape Road. The course was out and back, though, and the runners would be headed into the teeth of the wind at the finish. Zach DeVeau knew this when he was leading the race.

"I was afraid Vince [Molosky] was going to catch me on the way back," said DeVeau. "Then I would have to race him into that wind."

DeVeau didn't need to worry. Neither Vince Molosky nor anyone else caught DeVeau on his way to the finish line and a 42:03 victory in the not-quite-seven-and-a-half-mile race. Jack McDermott was the fastest master in the 12K, finishing fourth overall in 45:33. Sheryl Rosen won the women's title for the third time in six years, placing eleventh in 47:33. Tallahassee triathlete Stephanie Liles-Weyant was the first female master, coming in 13th overall in 48:43. 207 athletes finished the race.

Vince MoloskyThe 12K and the Flash 6K both started just after 8:30 AM. Molosky bolted out into the lead immediately. DeVeau followed, but not without misgivings.

"It felt like we were running pretty fast," said DeVeau. "But then we came through the first mile in 5:30. That was the pace I wanted to run."

No one else cared to run that pace, though, so Molosky and DeVeau were far ahead of the rest of the field. During the second mile DeVeau eased ahead of Molosky, and on the third mile he broke away. In spite of DeVeau's worries that Molosky would fight back up to the lead, the gap between the two runners only grew as the race progressed. DeVeau got the win in 42:03, while Molosky took second in 43:21. Eric Godin was third in 45:23. Tallahassee master runner Jack McDermott was fourth in 45:33, and Wakulla High senior Travis Parks finished fifth in 46:37.

Sheryl RosenSheryl Rosen took an early lead over the women's field in the 2015 Flash 12K, with Renee Cox, Stephanie Liles-Weyant, Katie Sherron, and Jillian Heddaeus in close pursuit. After the first kilometer Rosen was already 30 meters ahead and the chasers had dropped Heddaeus. By 5K Rosen had widened the margin to 100 meters. Sherron and Liles-Weyant shook off Cox, but they weren't making up any ground on Rosen. Rosen went on to run 47:33, the first woman finisher and eleventh overall. Sherron was the women's runner-up, twelfth overall in 48:24. Master runner Liles-Weyant took the third women's spot, thirteenth overall in 48:43. 17th overall in 51:07, Cox was fourth in the women's standings. Heddaeus was the fifth woman, 19th overall in 51:40.

After the Flash 12K, race director Mark Priddy and some of his volunteers were talking about possibly moving the finish line of the race next year. However, no one was talking about moving the 12K out of St. Marks or canceling it. Look for a 28th annual Flash 12K in 2016, and look for it on the streets and trails of St. Marks, Florida.

Tony Guillen and Renee Cox fly at the Swarm 10K

Tony GuillenRunning through the streets of Tallahassee's Southwood community, Tony Guillen successfully defended his title in the Conley Yellow Jacket Swarm 10K on Saturday morning, 2 November 2013. The Tallahassee master runner posted a 37:32 in the third annual 6.2-mile. Renee Cox placed first on the women's side, coming in fourth overall with a 42:47. Jennifer Shafer was the first woman master, placing 14th overall in 48:28.

Reikan LinThe 10K started in front of Conley Elementary School on Four Oaks Boulevard. 43 athletes racing the 10K were joined on the starting line by another 71 competing in the 5K. The whole group was sent on their way just after 8:30 AM by official starter Mike Conley--not only the educator for whom the school is named, but also an athlete who earned a spot in the FSU Athletic Hall of Fame through his career as a miler. After that sendoff the runners headed south on Four Oaks. After a kilometer Tony Guillen was leading not only his competitors in the 10K, but also the runners in the shorter 5K. Half a minute back, Mike LaBossiere and Renee Cox led the pursuit, with Leyssa Helgeson a few steps behind them. Mark Tombrink followed Helgeson, and Reikan Lin trailed Tombrink.

Renee Cox, Mike LaBossiere, Leyssa HelgesonGuillen continued to pull away. By halfway through the race he was too far ahead for the competition to see. Behind him, Reikan Lin moved up into second. LaBossiere and Cox continued to run together, holding down third and fourth. When Guillen crossed the finish line with a winning 37:32, his lead had grown to nearly 700 meters. Reikan Lin was runner-up in 40:14. LaBossiere pulled away from Cox late in the race to take third in 42:40. Cox, taking honors as the top woman in the race, was fourth in 42:47. Mark Tombrink was fifth in 45:19. Leyssa Helgeson was the second woman to finish, placing sixth overall in 45:31.

Johnson won in 19:11, not far off the 19:00 women's course record for the Swarm that she set in 2011. Crawfordville master runner Duane Evans was the first male finisher, placing second overall in 19:58. Walton was the third runner in, running 20:12.
