Ryan Truchelut and Leonardo Canete take it to the wire at the Salute To Prefontaine 5K

On Saturday morning, 23 September 2023, Gulf Winds Track Club's Prefontaine Forest 5K returned to its latest home--Wallwood Boy Scout Reservation near Wetumpka, Florida--for the 46th running of the event. Ryan Truchelut edged master runner Leonardo Canete for the win, both men clocked in 19:17. Brittney Barnes was the top woman in the race, placing ninth overall in 21:41.

Almost 20 miles and the width of Lake Talquin west of Tallahassee, Wallwood is several hundred acres of woodland on the edge of the Ocklochnee River valley. Creeks emptying into the river have carved ravines lined with hardwoods; the 3.1 miles of the Prefontaine Forest 5K took runners in and out of those ravines and even down to the shores of Lake Talquin. The 2023 version of that trek started at 9:00 AM. Leonardo Canete, runner-up in the 2022 Prefontaine, charged to the front. His lead grew until he was too far ahead for the rest of the to see.


"I had lost sight of Leo about a mile and a half," said Ryan Truchelut. "But then, at the out-and-back to the lake, I saw him behind me."

Mid race, where the course made a loop, Canete had gone around the loop an extra time. He wasn't the only athlete to make that wrong turn, but it had still put him behind the other leaders. With a kilometer to go, Canete trailed Brad Busboom and Truchelut by almost twenty seconds. He labored to make up that deficit, overtaking Busboom and then Truchelut.


"Leo caught me at about three miles," said Truchelut. "I stayed with him till 40 yards to go. Any race that I can reduce to a 40-yard dash, I have a chance to win."

The race came down to a sprint to the finish line. Truchelut won that sprint by a fraction of a second, crossing first in 19:17. Canete took second, also in 19:17. Brad Busboom placed third in 19:28.


Brittney Barnes was the first woman in a race for the second time in two weeks. Before her 21:41 win at the Prefontaine, Barnes had led the women's field at the Sickle Cell 5K on 9 September 2023. One of the athletes behind Barnes at the Sickle Cell race was Alexis Mayfield, a runner on the cross-country team at Swift Creek Middle School. Mayfield was second in the women's standings at Prefontaine, placing tenth overall in 22:09. Tallahassee triathlete Stephanie Liles-Weyant was the first woman master and the third female finisher, twentieth overall in 23:55. A past champion of the Pre, Liles-Weyant had won the women's division at the 2006 race.

Elijah Oquendo and Brittney Barnes race to the top at the Sickle Cell 5K

Elijah Oquendo ran cross-country at Tenoroc High School from 2015 to 2018, and at Tallahassee Community College in 2020. Add to that resume that on Saturday morning, 9 September 2023, Oquendo won the 41st annual Run For Sickle Cell 5K. Racing through the streets of the Jake Gaither neighborhood of Tallahassee, Florida, he completed the 3.1-mile course in 18:24. Tallahassee athlete Brittney Barnes was the first woman in the race, placing fifth overall in 20:32.


The Sickle Cell 5K wasn't Oquendo's first race of the weekend. The previous day, he had been competing at Apalachee Regional Park, running to a second-place finish in the men's 8K at Tallahassee Community College's Eagle Invitational Cross-Country Meet.


Hans Hassell was the top master runner in the Sickle Cell 5K, coming in second overall in 19:31. Master runner Fanxiu Zhu took third overall in 20:11.


Barnes' win was her For Brittney Barnes, her win was her third time as top woman in the Sickle Cell 5K. She had also taken women's titles in the 2015 and 2016 races. Behind Barnes, Emma Gannon was the women's runner-up, placing eleventh overall in 21:39. Twelve-year-old Alexis Mayfield, a cross-country runner on the Swift Creek Middle School team, was third in the women's standings and thirteenth overall in 21:46. Vicky Droze of Tallahassee was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, seventeenth overall in 23:26.


123 athletes finished the 2023 Sickle Cell 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee chip-timed the race.

Myles Gibson and Brittney Barnes win one under the lights at Run 2-1-1

“I haven’t seen this kind of cheering section since the time I ran the Boston Marathon,” said Myles Gibson. “The band, and all the people.”

There was a brass band at the sixth annual Run 2-1-1 5K on Saturday evening, 1 June 2019. And there might not have been as many people cheering in Tallahassee, Florida as in Boston, but they were vocal. They were also definitely cheering when Gibson finished, because the Donalsonville, Georgia master runner won the race, covering the 3.1 miles in 18:56. There were cheers as well for the first woman in the race, Brittney Barnes of Tallahassee, who placed fifth overall in 20:29.


Since 2014 and the first Run 2-1-1, the event organizers at 2-1-1 Big Bend haven’t been shy about changing the race. In 2015 they added a 10K. In 2017 they changed the season of the event, going from a winter race to a June race. In 2018 they dropped the 10K and moved from Southwood to Railroad Square. And in 2019, after five years of morning running, the Run 2-1-1 5K became a night race, with a start scheduled for 8:30 PM.

The change of time worked out well for Myles Gibson, who works as a crop inspector. In the popular imagination, farmers work from sunup to sundown. That may or may not be the case, but it seems like those are the hours for crop inspectors during growing season.


“I worked today and got home in just enough time to walk the dog and drive over here for the race,” said Gibson.

The race started a few minutes after 8:30, with Bobby Duggleby leading the field east along FAMU Way on the Capital Cascades Trail, toward the lights of the Cascade Park Bridge. Paul Guyas was next after Duggleby, with Gibson following. After overtaking Guyas, Gibson thought he could make a race of it if he could just stay close to Duggleby. He did.


“I passed him with just under a mile to go,” said Gibson.


Gibson finished up the last mile to win in 18:56, while Duggleby took second in 19:28. Guyas held off Tristan LaNasa for third, 19:53 to 19:54.

Brittney Barnes led the women’s field early in the race, but incoming high school frosh Maya Tang was right with her. Jamila Allen was a few steps back.


“Maya started out with me but after the first mile she was gone,” said Barnes. “I heard Jamila behind me around two miles.”

Neither caught Barnes while she ran home in 20:29 for the women's title. Allen overtook Tang to place second in the women's standings and eighth overall in 21:01. Tang was the third woman and tenth overall in 22:31. The top woman master was Kelly El-Urfali of Crawfordville, Florida, the seventh female finisher and 32nd overall in 25:09.


The change to a sundown race didn’t discourage athletes from running. 159 athletes finished the 2019 Run 2-1-1 5K, more than in any previous year. Five Star NTP of Dawsonville, Georgia timed the race.

Charlie Johnson and Amanda Sava each collect a second Tails & Trails title

On the east side of Tallahassee, Florida, Tom Brown Park, Lafayette Heritage Park, and the Alford Greenway are connected by dozens if not hundreds of miles of trails. Charlie Johnson covered 13.1 miles on those trails in 1:25:32 to win the half-marathon at the eighteenth annual Tails & Trails on Saturday morning, 4 May 2019. Amanda Sava was the first woman in the race, defending her 2018 title in the half marathon with a 1:38:43 and placing seventh overall.


The Animal Shelter Foundation has always hosted the event, starting in 2002 with a 5K race, adding a 10K in 2006 and the half marathon in 2015. Two days before the 2019 Tails & Trails, the longest run was in peril.

“I got a call from the city on Thursday at 4:30,” said Tom Perkins. “There was a hawk attacking people in Lafayette Heritage Park. We were going to have to cancel the race or re-route it.”


It turned out that a very minor change of course satisfied the hawk’s territorial instincts, and the half-marathon started from the Animal Sheter as scheduled at 7:45 AM, with Jeff Nielsen guiding the runners on the lead bicycle. After the first minute of running, Charlie Johnson was already well ahead of the field. No one, athlete or irate bird, challenged Johnson for the rest of the race.


“I was hoping for a hawk attack,” said Johnson. “Anything to have some excitement out there. It helped to have Jeff Nielsen out there on the bicycle, telling me, ‘Okay, there’s a big hill coming up.’”

There are numerous hills on the Tails & Trails half marathon course, which takes the runners in and out of the Lake Lafayette basin before finishing back at the Animal Shelter, atop the ridge that Easterwood Drive runs along. Amanda Sava also noticed those hills.


“It was tough!” said Sava. “I ran a lot faster this year. I think I’m in better shape, but I ran a triathlon last week and my legs are still recovering. I’m happy with my race, though. I’ll probably take a little break after this.”

Behind Johnson’s winning 1:25:32, Brad Busboom took second in 1:32:31 and Andrew Theodore third in 1:36:47. Jack McDermott was the first master runner in the half marathon, placing fourth overall in 1:36:47.


Melissa Thompson finished runner-up to Sava in the women's standings, placing sixteenth overall in 1:52:26. Courtney Mason was the third woman and seventeenth overall in 1:53:19. Laura Reina was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, twentieth overall in 1:55:11.

The Tails & Trails 10K started at 8:30, when the fastest half marathon runners were still exploring the Alford Greenway. Pensacola, Florida master runner Jennifer McGranahan was not only the first woman in the race, she was also the overall winner. McGranahan grabbed the lead right after the start, shadowed by Sean Landeta of Thomasville, Georgia. Landeta hung on for the first half of the race, but McGranahan got away after the leaders had turned around for the return trip to the Animal Shelter. 50 meters ahead by the six-kilometer mark, McGranahan finished with a lead of nearly 200 meters and a winning time of 46:08.

“That was fun!” said McGranahan. “I’ll be out there next year. I liked everything that went into this race; the trails, the family discount, the animals. It’s a nice way to find good homes for some animals.”


McGranahan has deep running roots in Pensacola, having raced cross-country and track for Pensacola High before going on to compete for the University of Florida. Currently, she’s working on a degree in physical therapy at Florida A&M University.

“I usually run the Fiesta of Five Flags 10K in Pensacola, and I could have driven back for that,” said McGranahan. “But I thought, ‘No!’ I love Tom Brown Park and the trails.”


Sean Landeta was the first man in the race, coming in second overall in 46:57. Paul Guyas was the first male master, third overall in 47:12. Master runner Tim Unger was third on the men's side and fifth overall in 48:40.

Tim Unger is Lilli Unger’s father, and Lilli Unger was second in the women’s standings.The Leon High cross-country runner placed fourth overall in 47:54. Alyssa Terry finished third in the women's division and seventh overall in 50:04.

The Tails & Trails 5K started at the same time as the 10K. Kurt Dietrich took the early lead in the 3.1-mile race. Having won the 5K in 2017 and 2018, Dietrich was going for a third straight title, but Connor Edwards denied him that. Edwards, an eighth-grader at Swift Creek Middle School, overtook Dietrich then went on to win the race in 19:44. Dietrich was second in 20:00, and Daniel Wurgler third in 20:14. Aaron Guyer was the top master runner in the 5K, placing seventh overall in 21:06.

In the 2015 Tails & Trails 10K Brittney Barnes had been the first woman. In the 2016 Tails & Trails 5K Barnes had been the first woman. In the 2019 5K she was again the first woman, placing ninth overall in 21:38. Amelia Bryant was second to Barnes, placing thirteenth overall in 25:10. Twelve-year-old Liliana Lewis edged Paula O'Neill for the third spot in the women's standings, 25:47 to 25:49. The two were sixteenth and seventeenth overall. O'Neill was the first woman master in the race.

643 athletes crossed the finish line at the 2019 Tails & Trails, with 125 completing the half marathon, 148 the 10K, 302 the 5K, and 68 the one-mile fun run. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee chip-timed each of the four races.

The return of Ryan Deak highlights the Fallen Heroes 5K

Ryan Deak was seventeen years old when he left Tallahassee, Florida for Colorado in 2003. At that time Deak was winning nearly every distance race in town that he cared to run. So although it was a surprise when Deak returned to Tallahassee for a visit on Saturday morning, 5 August 2017, it was no surprise that during that visit he won the Fallen Heroes 5K. Running the 3.1-miles through Maclay Gardens State Park in 17:01, Deak finished more than half a kilometer ahead of the next runner. Brittney Barnes of Tallahassee took the women's title, placing eighth overall in 22:36.

The sky was dark, threatening rain, when the race got started right at 8:30 AM. The run began with a 400-meter climb out of the Lake Hall recreation area, heading to the first turn on the course. Ryan Deak was the first around that turn, followed by master runners Myles Gibson and Mike Peymann. Deak wasn't waiting for anyone, though, and soon the rest of the field was left far behind. Alone in the lead, he hit the first mile in 5:25. During the second mile the race left the pavement and the going got tougher.


"I was trying to stay relaxed out there so it wouldn't look like I was dying," said Deak. "But I was."

His last two miles were a bit slower than his first, but Deak was still running faster than any other athlete on the course. As a light rain started to fall, Deak continued to widen his lead, returning to Lake Hall to cross the finish line in a winning 17:01.


"I felt old and slow," he said.


Deak, 32, teaches physical education and coaches cross-country at Alice Deal Middle School in Washington, DC.

Behind Deak, Myles Gibson and Mike Peymann dueled for the runner-up spot. Gibson held second place early, then Peymann overtook him during the middle of the race. But Gibson came back.


"I passed him around the two-mile mark," said Gibson, who had driven through a storm from his home in Donalsonville, Georgia to run the race.


Gibson spent the final mile opening a gap of 70 meters on Peymann, taking second in 19:01.

"It's getting harder every year to break 19:00," said Gibson.


Tallahassee's Peymann was third in 19:17. "That's my fastest 5K this year," said Peymann. "I'm training for the Berlin Marathon. I've got a twenty-mile training run tomorrow."


Behind women's champ Brittney Barnes, Amy Triggs took second in the women's standings, placing fourteenth overall in 23:58. A West Palm Beach athlete, Triggs was also the top woman master in the race. Leslie Brett edged Julie Cosper for the third women's spot, 26:55 to 26:59. Brett and Cosper were 24th and 26th overall respectively.

The rain stopped as the last of 120 athletes finished the race.


From 2009 to 2011, the Fallen Heroes 5K was hosted annually by the North Florida chapter of Operation One Voice. After a hiatus in 2012, the race was taken up by Operation One Voice Florida. Operation One Voice raises funds to support children and families of wounded and fallen members of United States Special Operations Forces.

Park.
The 2010-2017 races were run in Maclay Gardens State Park.

Johnson and Sherron top the Ten-Mile Challenge

In 1988, Tallahassee, Florida's Gulf Winds Track Club trimmed about four kilometers from its annual twenty-kilometer race and re-named it the Ten-Mile Challenge. In 2010 Reid Vannoy moved the race to Ox Bottom Manor, where the hilly course really did provide a challenge. Even on the flat, most people would be proud to finish a race with double-digit mileage. Of course, it might puncture their pride a bit to hear Tallahassee triathlete Charlie Johnson describe his motives for running the Ten-Mile Challenge on Saturday morning, 3 December 2016.


“I want to get some shorter hard stuff in with hills in prep for Boston in April,” said Johnson.


Shorter is relative, of course, and over the past year Johnson has been at 30K, 50K, the marathon, and an Ironman triathlon--where a 26.2-mile run is only the dessert in a three-course meal of pain. With that background, it’s no wonder that ten miles seems short. With that background, it’s no wonder that Charlie Johnson won the 2016 Ten-Mile Challenge, running 59:10 and finishing almost half a mile ahead of the next runner.

The race started at 8:00 AM from Hawks Rise Elementary School. 92 runners that would finish the Ten-Mile Challenge were on the starting line, along with another 132 who would complete a five-mile race. The five-milers would do one lap around the course, while the ten-milers would continue for a second lap around.


“A pack of maybe ten of us took off way too fast,” recalled Johnson. “The pace was sub-5:30 at the half-mile mark. I backed it off at that point.”


Johnson and master runner Geb Kiros ran together for three or four miles before Johnson pulled away. He had company from the leaders in the five-mile race for a while, but those runners soon turned off toward their own finish line, leaving Johnson to complete a lonely second lap.


“I was left all alone moping to myself that I should have done the five-mile and could be sitting down,” quipped Johnson. “But the remainder of the race I saw no one behind me and turned it into a mental game of push the uphills with strong form and roll the down hills with smooth steps. Running solo can be great a lot of times, because you can fall into a rhythm without interruption.”


No one interrupted Johnson on his way to the finish line and a 59:10 win. Geb Kiros was second overall and the top master runner in the race, posting a 62:22. Chris O’Kelley was third in 62:40, and master runner Myles Gibson placed fourth in 63:43.


Katie Sherron won the women’s title, placing twelfth overall in 1:14:31. It was the third year in a row and the fourth time ever that the Florida State University economics professor had won the Challenge. Emma Spencer was second in the women's standings and sixteenth overall in 1:18:25. Ruffian Tyner was the first woman master and third female finisher, eighteenth overall in 1:20:07.

The close competition that was missing in the Ten-Mile Challenge could be found in the five-mile race, where less than 70 meters separated the first runner from the third. Zach DeVeau won the shorter race, running the five miles in 29:30, the fastest winning time in the race since 2012, when Zac Buchholz posted a 29:19. Jim Halley was a close second in 29:38. Gary Droze was the first master runner for the second year in a row, placing third overall in 29:45. Droze had won the five-mile race in 2006.

Brittney Barnes was the women's champ in the five mile, coming in ninth overall in 33:00. Katie Sack took second on the women's side, coming in fifteenth overall in 35:21. Jillian Heddaeus was the third woman across the finish line, sixteenth overall in 35:48. The 2014 women’s champ, Paula O'Neill, was the top woman master and fourth female finisher, twentieth overall in 37:15.
