Cox and Showman take on all Ten-Mile Challengers

Stephen Cox and Vince MoloskyStephen Cox rolled away from a field of 169 athletes to win the 3 December 2011 edition of Gulf Winds Track Club's annual Ten Mile Challenge. Cox's time was 56:13 for the ten-mile tour of the streets of Tallahassee's Ox Bottom Manor neighborhood. Runner-up Charlie Johnson crossed the line nearly a minute later in 57:03, followed by defending champion Vince Molosky in 57:11. At 60:58, Carl Nordhielm was the fourth runner overall and the fastest master of the morning. Katie Showman was the top woman finisher, placing 20th overall in 68:15. The first woman master was Jane Johnson, 32nd in 71:25.

Charlie JohnsonIt was a cool, clear morning, perfect for distance running, when the runners left Hawk's Rise Elementary School just after 8:00am. Molosky took the lead early in the first mile, with Cox running right off his shoulder. Behind them Johnson settled into third place. At three miles Molosky and Cox were running side by side, with Cox challenging for the lead on the turns. Johnson was over half a minute behind the two leaders. Then Cox opened a gap on Molosky and took control of the race. While Cox ran home for the victory, Johnson reeled in Molosky to grab second.

Katie Showman
Katie Showman led the rest of the women by the mile mark, with 1994 Ten Mile Challenge champ Jane Johnson eight seconds back. Kelly Stevens and four-time Ten Mile Challenge winner Sheryl Rosen were another four seconds behind, trailed by Micah Adriani. Two miles later, while Showman continued to run away from her competition, Stevens and Rosen had caught Jane Johnson. No closer than before, Adriani remained in fifth. Showman went on to win by over 400 meters in 68:15, but the runner-up spot went to Adriani, who moved up through the field to post a 70:08, passing Stevens (29th, 70:51), Rosen (30th, 70:58), and Johnson (32nd, 71:25).
