Halley and Sherron handle the hills at Nene Fest

2017 Nene Fest 5KDuring the 1950s, as part of the great suburban boom in the United States following World War II, on the east side of Tallahassee, Florida the farmland of Indianhead Plantation became the housing development Indianhead Acres. Uniquely and notably, the streets in Indianhead Acres all were given Muscogean names, so instead of an assortment of roads, ways, avenues, trails, and boulevards the neighborhood is full of "nenes"--the word for trails. Mail in Indianhead goes to addresses on Ostin Nene, Chowkeebin Nene, Hokolin Nene, and several other "nenes." This is celebrated in the name of the homeowner association's annual neighborhood festival--Nene Fest.

Not so uniquely but still notably, Indianhead Acres is hilly. The neighborhood is sited on the slopes that cradle Indianhead Creek so that unless you're following the stream, you're probably going up or down. This topography is the source of much frustration to athletes competing in the annual neighborhood festival's road race, the Nene Fest 5K.

On Saturday morning, 29 April 1960, Tallahassee runner Jim Halley ran 17:57 on the hilly "nenes" to win the fourth annual Nene Fest 5K. Florida State University economics professor Katie Sherron took the women's title, running 21:39 and placing sixth overall while shepherding a baby stroller up and down the slopes of Indianhead.

For the third year in a row, Florida A & M University biostatistics professor Geb Kiros was the fastest master runner in the race, placing second overall in 18:30. It was also Kiros' third straight year as the Nene Fest 5K runner-up. Kurt Dietrich took third, running 19:02. Tallahassee master runner Mike Peymann was fourth overall in 19:30.

Alyssa Bertinelli was second in the women's standings and eighth overall in 23:32. Alese Autore was the third woman and ninth overall in 23:55. Lisa Homan was the top woman master and fourth female finisher, coming in eleventh overall in 24:23.

88 athletes finished the 2017 Nene Fest 5K. The event raised over $4000 for the music program of Hartsfield Elementary School.

Haynes and Centner gather roses in Thomasville

On Saturday morning, 29 April 2017, for the 40th year in a row athletes converged on Thomasville, Georgia for the annual Rose City Run. This time nearly 400 athletes made the ten-kilometer tour of the Thomasville streets, and this time the fastest runner was Chris Haynes of Tallahassee, who won the race in 32:57. Ann Centner of Blakely, Georgia was the top woman, running 40:56 and placing eighth overall.

As in the 39 previous Aprils, the athletes gathered on Broad Street for the start of the race. Just as in many of those Aprils, race director Dr. Jim Story informed the competitors, “When the gun fires, you go. If the gun doesn’t fire, you go anyway.” The gun fired. The runners went.

Dustin Reynolds, a senior on the Seminole High cross-country team, bolted to the front of the pack. He was stalked by two Tallahassee runners, Chris Haynes and Leon High senior Matt Cashin. Just two weeks earlier, Haynes had run a 15:43 for 5K, placing second at the Palace Saloon Run. Cashin had races even more recently, going 9:38 in the 3200 two days previously at the FHSAA 3A Region 1 track meet. The two runners weren’t strangers.

“He’s our assistant coach at Leon,” said Cashin. “We’ve been training a lot together.”

Haynes and Cashin, coach and athlete, soon overtook Reynolds.

“He was still with us at the mile,” recalled Cashin.

Mickey Moore
Mickey Moore

But not much longer. By the uphill climb near Cherokee Lake during the second mile, Reynolds was already half a minute behind Haynes and Cashin. Soon after that Haynes took over completely.

“Right before the two-mile mark is where we started splitting,” said Cashin.

After that Haynes was alone with the heat, humidity, and hills, ultimately building up a lead of more than half a kilometer--not that he ever looked back to check.

“I thought Matt was closer,” said Haynes. “If he had been with me when I crested Heartbreak he could have gone right by me, because I was toast.”

Ann Centner
Ann Centner

The Rose City Run’s Heartbreak Hill, though, is less than half a mile from the finish line, and no one was close to Haynes. He was home with the win in 32:57.Cashin took second in 34:51. Mickey Moore of Tallahassee was the top master runner in the race, taking third overall in 38:05. Dustin Reynolds was fourth in 38:16 and Perry, Florida master runner Michael Rhodes was fifth in 39:02.

Haynes did his collegiate running at the University of North Florida. Women’s champ Ann Centner, on the other hand, was a University of Georgia distance runner. The former Bulldog was ahead of the rest of the women’s field almost immediately after the start of the Rose City Run.

Ann Centner, Katie Sack
Ann Centner & Katie Sack

“I have trouble with going out too fast,” said Centner. “I have to work on that.”

Poor pacing didn't have any dire competitive consequences for Centner that morning, though, as attested by Tallahassee runner Katie Sack, who spent the entire race chasing Centner.

“I closed in a little between three and four miles,” said Sack. “But that was it.”

Alyssa Terry
Alyssa Terry

Centner ran home in 40:56 for the women’s title. Sack was the women’s runner-up and eleventh overall in 41:44. Alyssa Terry of Tallahassee was third in the women's standings and 26th overall in 44:52. Leon High junior Cynthia Paterson was the fourth woman and 43rd overall in 47:30. The top woman master and fifth female finisher was Tallahassee realtor Nancy Stedman, 46th overall in 48:01.

Neither Chris Haynes nor Ann Centner had raced Rose City before. There were some veterans of past Rose City Runs in the field, but few if any who were at the first race in 1978. But even as the faces in the race have changed, much else about Rose City has stayed the same. The runners have covered the same course for 40 Aprils, the band still plays on the fourth mile, and the Big Oak still provides shade during the awards presentations. And in spite of testimony to the contrary, Heartbreak Hill hasn’t got any steeper in the last 40 years. Thomasville’s Rose City Run has had a good first 40 years, and I hope it’s not asking too much to wish for at least 40 more.

Scharlepp and Chunka navigate the Meridian Run

Old Tallahassee Meridian MarkerBeginning in 1824, all land in the territory (and later the state) of Florida was surveyed from the intersection of the Tallahassee Meridian (84° 16′ 37.59″ W) and the Base Parallel (30° 26′ 04.12″ N). This point didn't seem to have any particular significance; it's actually in a spot that was subject to flooding by a local creek, the Saint Augustine Branch. In 1925 a modest monument was erected on the site, but it was sometimes hidden by the tall grass. When Cascades Park was renovated the monument was replaced with an impressive mosaic showing Florida and the locations of the Base Line and Tallahassee Meridian.

For most people in Tallahassee though, daily contact with the Tallahassee Meridian comes in the form of Meridian Road, which roughly traces that line of longitude through most of city. And at 3000 North Meridian Road you'll find North Florida Christian School, which on Saturday morning, 22 April 2017, hosted the fourth annual Meridian Run 10K and 5K.

Zack Scharlepp won the 10K, covering the 6.2-mile course through Tallahassee's hilly northside in 42:14. Jackson Graham finished runner-up in 43:57, and Mark Tombrink took third in 46:47. Michael Kennett was the fastest master runner in the race, placing fourth overall in 46:54.

A few steps behind Kennett, Kate Chunka was the first woman in the 10K, finishing fifth overall in 46:56. North Florida Christian sophomore Mary Gravius was second in the women's standings and sixth overall in 52:10. Holly Gorham was the first woman master and third female finisher, coming in tenth overall in 68:25.

1975 Peach Bowl Marathon

1975 Peach Bowl Marathon
It has been a long while since I've posted some "results from the attic" to Trouble Afoot! So, to end that drought, here's the 1975 Peach Bowl Marathon, as the Atlanta Marathon was known back then.

The results were mailed out to participants after the race, probably after an original was pounded out on an electric typewriter and then run through a copying machine. Perhaps a mimeograph was involved. The 1970s were long before the era of "check our website for live results!" I don't have the envelope that my copy of the results came in, but I can guarantee you that it wasn't postmarked the same day as the race.

If you're from that era, some of the names of athletes will be familiar, even if you haven't seen those names for a few decades. The club names are also historically interesting. Hey, there's the Northwest Florida Track Club, the Atlanta Track Club, the Gulf Winds Track Club, and the Florida Track Club. Those organizations are still around today. Is the Kentuckian Cinder Club still a thing? If not, the world is a poorer place. Hey, the University of the South had a marathon team!

The results came with these "Race Notes:"

The 1975 Peach Bowl Marathon was won by 21 year old Penn State University runner George Christopher, in the time of 2:17:49. This was the second fastest time ever run on the difficult Atlanta Peach Bowl course. Neil Cusack ran it in 2:16:18 in 1971 to set the course record. Cusack's performance was run on a slightly different course which was approximately 200 yards longer than the present certified course. Christopher led from the start and won by a wide margin over second place finisher Charles Trayer, 2:25:20, who also hails from Pennsylvania.

The race was run in excellent marathon weather, 40° F, overcast, and 10 mph winds from the northeast. 62 runners finished under three hours for the best quality marathon ever run in the Southeast. Jeff Galloway won the 12.7 mini-marathon in his first "workout" since his 2:19:59.4 performance two weeks before in the Honolulu marathon. Other exceptional performances included Harold Tinsley, Sr., (39) of the Huntsville Track Club in the time of 2:33:32, and Ken Winn (38) of the Atlanta Track Club in 2:34:21. Gayle Barron continued her fine marathon running with 2:57:11, and called her race a hard workout. A surprise performance was turned in by Lisa Lorrain with a time of 3:08:14 in her first marathon and only her third race of over 10 miles. The Atlanta Track Club won the team title, followed by the Kentuckian Cinder Club. Westminster School provided the excellent facilities and the Atlanta Police Department gave the best protection and traffic control that could have been asked for.

This was just a few years after women were allowed in the Boston Marathon, but from the notes it's clear that at least two women athletes were among the finishers of the Peach Bowl Marathon. It isn't clear exactly how many of the 121 marathoners were women, though, because sexes aren't indicated in the results. The same is true of the "mini marathon"--names and times are designated, male and female aren't.

The race was on a two-lap course that finished on the Westminster School track. The track was in a depression, and it wasn't much fun hiking out of that hole if you were a fifteen-year-old who had just finished struggling through his first marathon. Trust me on this; I was that fifteen-year-old. The loop was quite hilly. I understand that when the marathon moved to a new course, the Atlanta Track Club sold this one to Six Flags to use as a roller coaster.

Run on various courses going back to around 1960, this was probably the oldest marathon in the South. Eventually Atlanta Track Club moved it to Thanksgiving Day, the half marathon outgrew the marathon, and then the marathon was dropped. But in 1975 the Peach Bowl Marathon was doing fine. Just look at the results and see for yourself.
