Tallahassee athletes in the 2022 Boston Marathon

The history of the annual Boston Marathon from 1897 to 2022 hasn't been without interruptions. The race keeps coming back, though. It came back after World War I. It came back after the 2013 bombing. It came back after a pandemic. The grand old marathon returned to Patriot's Day on 18 April 2022, and there were Tallahassee athletes on the starting line in Hopkinton, Massachusetts for the occasion None of them were challenging Evans Chebet for the win when the Kenyan ran 2:06:51, nor was any athlete from Florida's Capital City in the mix when Kenya's Peres Jepchirchir outkicked Ababel Yeshaneh of Ethiopia for the women's title, 2:21:01 to 2:21:05. Nevertheless, they were there.


Tallahassee's first finisher in the 2022 Boston Marathon was Michael Niezgoda, who placed 2164th overall and 2045th in the men's standings with a 2:56:47. Tallahassee's first woman was Claire Berryman, who ran 3:23:02 to place 8492nd overall and 1629th in the women's division. Jon Maner was the first master runner from Tallahassee in the race, placing 6394th in 3:16:23. The Capital City's first woman master in the marathon was Samantha Fillmore, 17040th overall and 6218th in the women's standings with a 4:01:44.


The history of Tallahassee athletes in the Boston Marathon goes back to 1960, when Florida State University distance runner Kent Mills took time out from track season to run the 26.2-mile race. Mills placed 26th in the race, his second marathon, running 2:48:39. In addition to being the first Tallahassee-based athlete at Boston, Mills was probably also the first runner from Florida to finish the storied event.


No doubt more Tallahassee athletes will be tracing the path of Kent Mills in Boston on Patriots Day 2023. In the meantime, here are the Tallahassee finishers of the 2022 Boston Marathon.

More Tallahassee Marathon kudos for Bryan Morseman and Tamara Kozulina

Clarence DeMar earned fame in the annals of New England athletics by winning the Boston Marathon seven times. At another marathon in Tallahassee, Florida, Bryan Morseman is closing in on that total. On Sunday morning, 6 February 2022, Morseman took his fifth Tallahassee Marathon title, winning the race in 2:28:45. But Morseman still trails the women's champ, Tamara Kozulina. Master runner Kozulina already had five Tallahassee Marathon victories going into the 2022 race and ended the morning with her sixth, running 3:24:15 to finish as the first woman and 25th overall.

On any Sunday morning in downtown Tallahassee, you wouldn't be surprised to hear the carillon of Saint John's Episcopal Church playing. If you want to hear the bells clanging out Vangelis' theme for the movie "Chariots of Fire," though, you need to be near the church on the first Sunday in February, the morning of the annual Tallahassee Marathon. The tune was playing when the 47th marathon started in front of the Leon County Courthouse at 7:30 AM on 6 February 2022. It was still playing when the marathoners ran by the church, half a kilometer from the starting line. The bells were quiet when the runners returned downtown during the seventh kilometer of the race. Bryan Morseman was already leading the marathon at that point, more than 400 meters ahead of the next runner, Trevor Sununu.


By fifteen kilometers, Morseman had widened his lead to 900 meters. Halfway through the race, the gap had grown to 1600 meters. Morseman had no challenges from his fellow athletes during the second half, only from the distance and from ferocious headwinds. The marathoner from New York state handled those obstacles and made it to the finish line in 2:28:45, notching his fifth Tallahassee Marathon title. Behind Morseman, master runner Charlie Johnson had been more than a kilometer behind Sununu, but had narrowed that to under 200 meters. Sununu hung on to finish runner-up in 2:44:44, while Johnson was third in 2:45:23.

Halfway through the 2022 Tallahassee Marathon, the course made a circuit of Lake Henrietta. By that midpoint Tamara Kozulina was leading the women's field by about 1600 meters. Holding the second position behind Kozulina was Tallahassee athlete Melanie Leitman, a first-time marathoner. Leitman actually moved slightly closer to Kozulina during the second half of the race, but not close enough to prevent Kozulina from collecting a sixth Tallahassee marathon win. The Clermont master runner posted a winning time of 3:24:15, while Leitman was the second woman and 34th overall in 3:31:47. Kristen Berger, a master runner from Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, took third in the women's standings and 35th overall with a 3:34:49.


151 athletes finished the 2022 Tallahassee Marathon.

While the marathoners were racing on the streets of Tallahassee, athletes in a half-marathon race were also on the course. The Tallahassee Marathon hasn't always included a half-marathon event, and although Gulf Winds Track Club has done a good job of maintaining a record of marathon winners, the same care hasn't been given to the half marathon. Stan Linton was curious about the fastest time ever run in the Tallahassee Marathon, but couldn't find any easy answers. He finally decided that the event record was was the 1:07:46 run by Will Christian in the 2019 race. In 2022, Linton set out to break that record.

Break it? He crushed it. After a few miles of fighting David Too for the lead, Linton was alone out front and racing the clock. He was first across the finish line in College Town with a 1:05:08, well under Christian's 2019 effort. David Too took second in 1:07:31, and David Barney was third in 1:10:32.

Purity Munene led the women's field of the half-marathon early. She led by a lot. At the end of the 21.1-kilometer race The Columbia, South Carolina athlete was more than two kilometers ahead of the next woman, placing tenth overall in 1:22:44. Tallahassee's Alyssa Terry was second in the women's standings, placing 26th overall in 1:32:23. Sophie Harkins of Atlanta was the third woman and 30th overall, running 1:33:32.


Leonardo Canete of Tallahassee was the first master runner in the half-marathon, running 1:23:02 to finish as the tenth male and eleventh overall. The first woman master was Antigone Pierson of Pensacola, Florida, the seventh female finisher and 44th overall in 1:38:43.


586 athletes finished the half-marathon. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed both races.

Kent Mills was Florida State's Marathon Man at Boston in 1960

Monday, 20 April 2020, won’t be a typical Patriots’ Day in Boston, Massachusetts. Because of CoViD-19, the bars won’t be open. The Red Sox won’t be playing in Fenway Park. The Boston Marathon won’t be run, rescheduled for 14 September 2020. And with no Marathon, there will be no one at the starting line in Hopkinton from Tallahassee, Florida.


Kent MillsTallahassee athletes have been racing the Boston Marathon for quite some time. In fact, back on Patriots’ Day 19 April 1960, Florida State University junior Kent Mills made the trip from Tallahassee to Hopkinton for the 64th annual Boston. It was what Tom Derderian, a historian of the event, described as “A perfect day for running. A 15-mile-an-hour tailwind on a clear, brisk 50 °F day.” Taking advantage of the conditions, Mills ran 2:48:59, placing 26th overall.


It was a smaller race then, with only 156 starters. Of those, 83 finished. Among those who dropped out along the way was John J. Kelley, the 1957 Boston champion. The 1960 race was also one of three Olympic Trial Marathons for the United States team. In spite of not finishing, Kelley was placed on the U.S. squad. It was a different time.


For Mills, Boston wasn’t his first marathon, nor his fastest. In fact, Mills was already a national marathon champion, in spite of having only been a runner for less than three years.


Growing up in Pontiac, Michigan, Mills hadn’t run in high school. He took up the sport as a freshman at Florida State University during the 1957-1958 academic year, coached by Mike Long. Mills raced the half-mile that year, running 2:01. Even in the 1950s, that performance wasn’t NCAA All-American material. But Mills’ future was in the longer distances. As a sophomore he set the Florida State school record in the two-mile run, going 9:31.4 during the 1959 track season.


Florida State didn’t have a cross-country team in 1959, so late that fall Mills made his own way into Alabama for the third annual Troy Chamber of Commerce Cross-Country Meet. The meet was hosted by Troy State coach Nick Costes, the 1955 US national champion in the marathon and a member of the 1956 US Olympic Marathon team. If Mills hadn’t been thinking about the marathon already, he was now. And the AAU was hosting the National Junior Marathon Championship in Atlantic City, New Jersey on 2 January 1960.


“The team couldn’t afford to send me,” Mills told the school newspaper, the Flambeau. “The University doesn’t sponsor a cross-country team, and the track team was in no position to pay my way up. I wanted to run so bad I could taste it...I had never run the distance before, but I wanted to try.”


So Mills spent nine days of the winter break hitchhiking north, spending seventeen hours on the road. He made it to Philadelphia at 2:00 AM on 27 December 2020, just eleven hours before the start of the Middle Atlantic Road Runners’ Club Cross-Country Championship. Mills won that 10,000-meter race in 33:51.


After spending nearly a week in Philadelphia, Mills found a ride with another athlete heading to Atlantic City for the Marathon. He trailed during the first half of the out-and-back route. With ten miles to go in the 26.2-mile race, Mills moved up into the lead group. He began to push the pace after that, dropping the rest of the leaders.


“I thought, ‘This can’t be right, I can’t be winning this race,’” Mills told the Flambeau.


Nevertheless, Mills won the race by over half a mile, taking the national title with a 2:30:35. At the end of the year, it would stand as the eighth-fastest marathon by an American during 1960, an Olympic year.


The day after the race, Mills started hitchhiking back to Tallahassee.


Unlike the Junior National Marathon, Boston was in the middle of track season and in the middle of Florida State’s spring session. Mills still made it to Massachusetts for the race, but his 2:48:59 was well off what he had run in his first marathon. Several of the athletes he had beaten in Atlantic City were among the 25 runners ahead of him at Boston. Six days later, Mills was back in Florida, racing at Gainesville in the FSU-UF dual meet. He took third in the mile and second in the two-mile for the Seminoles. Florida State won that day, and the team went undefeated during the 1960 season.


Mills spent another year competing for Florida State before graduating in 1961. He did not log any more marathon victories as a Seminole. But if you’re ever in Hopkinton on the starting line of the Boston Marathon, remember that Kent Mills was there before you.

Jack McDermott goes a long way to get another Tallahassee Ultra-Distance Classic title

In Florida, the longest distance contested in high school track and field is the 3200-meter run. Just short of two miles, the 3200 is eight laps around a standard high school track. The longest race at Gulf Winds Track Club's 39th annual Tallahassee Ultra-Distance Classic was also eight laps. The laps were a bit longer than your typical track, though. The lap at the Ultra was ten kilometers, a bit more than six miles around Wakulla Spring State Park, south of Tallahassee, Florida. The race on Saturday morning, 14 December 2019, was fifty miles, and Tallahassee master runner Jack McDermott won it with a 6:32:27 performance. Rae Ann Darling Reed, a master runner from Bradenton, Florida, was the first woman in the long run, clocking 8:04:03.

There's not enough pavement in Wakulla Springs State Park for the whole ten-kilometer loop, so much of it is run on a stretch of Highway 61, Wakulla Springs Road. Hills aren't an issue on the flat loop, but the long, straight stretches on the highway can be mentally taxing.


"I couldn't face another two laps on that course," said one runner, who dropped out after going fifty kilometers.

McDermott may not find the big laps easy, but he is used to them. He placed second in the 50-mile event at the 2018 Ultra, and won it in 2007. Another Tallahassee athlete, Thomas Parker, also endured the full eight laps, taking second to McDermott in 6:44:28. Gainesville, Florida's Joel Rich, the defending champion in the race, was third in 6:48:19. Mark Tombrink, the 2015 winner, placed fourth in 7:40:36.


Shae Merritt of Ocala, Florida was the second woman in the 50-miler, finishing tenth overall in 9:45:08. Jefferson, Georgia master runner Charity Love was the third female finisher and eleventh overall in 9:54:06.

Other than the 50-mile race, the Tallahassee Ultra-Distance Classic also included a 50 kilometer and a marathon-length event. Master runner Kevin Randolph of Locust Grove, Georgia, won the 50K in 4:08:30. Emily Collins was less than half a minute behind him in 4:08:57--almost a dead heat in a race of that length. Second overall, Akron, Ohio's Collins was the first woman in the race.


Tallahassee master runner Marci Gray was the second woman in the 50K, placing third overall in 4:23:11. Laura Reina, another Tallahassee master runner, was the third woman and fourth overall in 4:28:31.

Will Hanley of Tallahassee was runner-up in the men's standings, placing fifth overall in 4:38:58. Jacksonville, Florida's Eric Chiotti was the third male and eleventh overall in 5:16:58.


It's a rare event where the marathon is the shortest race on the program, but that was the case at the Tallahassee Ultra-Distance Classic. Because of an error on the course, the runners didn't go a regulation 26.2 miles, but they did go a long way. Tallahassee master runner Fanxiu Zhu finished first, running 3:21:37. Florida State University graduate student Alyssa Moore was the first woman in the race, second overall in 3:24:03. Just behind Moore in 3:24:26, Jamila Allen was the second woman and third overall in the marathon.

Tallahassee master runner Carter Hay was the second male finisher and fourth overall in 3:27:28. Blountstown, Florida's Thomas Howell placed third in the men's standings and fifth overall in 3:33:43.


Michelle Hadden of Tallahassee was the third woman and seventh overall in 3:44:19. Birgit Maier-Katkin of Tallahassee was the first woman master in the marathon, the fourth female finisher and eleventh overall in 3:59:57.

Twelve athletes finished the 50 miler, 54 the 50K, and 31 the marathon at the 2019 Tallahassee Ultra-Distance Classic. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the races.

Troy Dunkley runs to a new record at the Chasing Jefferson Davis Marathon

Chasing Jefferson Davis MarathonThe Boston Marathon started in 1897 as a race through the Massachusetts countryside commemorating events at the start of the American Revolution. The Chasing Jefferson Davis Marathon started in 2015 as a race through the South Georgia countryside commemorating events at the end of the Civil War. The 123rd Boston Marathon was run on Monday, 15 April 2019. The fifth annual Chasing Jefferson Davis Marathon was run on Saturday, 4 May 2019.


You can consult the Boston Globe for news about the Boston Marathon winners. As for the Georgia race, Troy Dunkley of Jacksonville, Florida won the 2019 Chasing Jefferson Davis Marathon by nearly 700 meters, running a course-record 3:01:05. Dalton, Massachusetts master runner Jennifer Bell was the first woman in the marathon, placing fifth overall in 4:12:56.


No one has cracked three hours yet in the Chasing Jefferson Davis Marathon, but Dunkley came closest. His 3:01:05 clips more than eight minutes off the old Davis Marathon record of 3:09:22, set in the 2016 race by Kerry Hobbs. Master runner Jonathan Ericson also ran faster than Hobbs' record, Ericson was runner-up to Dunkley in 3:04:00. Matt Parks, a Jacksonville master runner, took third in 3:47:33.


Dalton, Massachusetts, the hometown of women's champ Jennifer Bell, is just a two-hour drive from the starting line of the Boston Marathon. In fact, Bell ran 4:03:54 in the 2019 Boston. Kendra Tippens of Winston, Georgia was second to Bell in the women's standings of the Chasing Jefferson Davis Marathon, placing seventh overall in 4:28:54. Fayettville, Georgia master runner Karilena Harwitz was the third woman and fourteenth overall in 5:04:39.

At the Boston Marathon there isn't a Half Marathon option, but there is at the Chasing Jefferson Davis race. Score one for Georgia! Score one, also for Edward Ostrander. The Lee County High frosh-year cross-country runner won the Chasing Jefferson Davis Half-Marathon for the second year in a row, covering the 21.1-kilometer course in 1:37:11--more than nine minutes faster than his winning time in 2018. Russell Coleman of Warner Robins, Georgia was the first master runner in the half marathon, placing second overall in 1:43:01.


Bianca Orr, a cross-country runner for the Brenau University's Golden Tigers, was the first woman in the half marathon, coming in third overall in 1:45:32. Tiffany Brantley of Eastman, Georgia was the first woman master in 21.1-kilometer race, finishing fifth overall in 1:55:57.


27 athletes finished the 2019 Chasing Jefferson Davis Half-Marathon.

The Chasing Jefferson Davis Marathon commemorates the capture of Jefferson Davis by the United States military near Fitzgerald, Georgia in 1865. Run annually from 2015 to 2019, the race has now lasted as long as the Slaveholders' Rebellion of 1861-1865, when Davis was the president of the rebels. Classic Race Services timed the 2019 Chasing Jefferson Davis Marathon and Half Marathon.

Eliud Ngetich and Stephanie Pezzullo topple the defending champs of the Albany Snickers® Marathon

MedalsSergei Zyrianov won the Albany, Georgia Snickers® Marathon in 2017 and again in 2018. Lyubov Denisova was the first woman in the Albany, Georgia Snickers® Marathon in 2017 and again in 2018. Saturday morning, 2 March 2019, was the thirteenth annual Albany Marathon, and thirteen wasn't a lucky number for the defending champions. That morning, Zyrianov shared the lead with Eliud Ngetich for almost the entire 26.2 miles of the race, but at the finish line Ngetich got the win, 2:20:01 to 2:20:02. In the women's competition, Denisova ran 2:45:28, her fastest effort yet in Albany, but finished runner-up to Stephanie Pezzullo, who placed fourth overall in 2:42:50.


Nathaneal Williams ran with Ngetich and Zyrianov for more than ten miles, but by the halfway mark of the race he had fallen behind the two leaders. After spending the second half of the race watching Ngetich and Zyrianov pull out of sight, Williams finished third in 2:28:48. Eric Kujawski was the first male master and ninth in the men's standings, eleventh overall in 2:49:40.


The first master runner in the race, though, was Lyubov Denisova, the second female finisher. After running with women's leader Pezzullo early in the race, Denisova gave up ground after the five mile mark. After ten miles the race was over, with Pezzullo going on to take the women's title in 2:42:50 and Denisova following in 2:45:28. At 3:00:05, Natalia Wilcox was third in the women's standings and 24th overall.

Four months before the Albany Snickers® Marathon, Reinhardt College junior Jose Diaz earned NAIA All-American status in men's cross-country. In Albany, Diaz won the half-marathon race, running the 13.1 miles in 1:13:09. Evan Beauchamp took second in 1:16:52, and Jose Manuel Santana was third in 1:18:30. Raymond Green was the fastest master runner in the half marathon, placing sixth overall in 1:23:44.


Katja Blunden of Destin, Florida took the women's title in the half marathon, coming in seventh overall in 1:26:12. Molly Willams finished runner-up to Blunden on the women's side and eighth overall in 1:27:13. Albany's own Jennifer Perkins was the third woman finisher and eleventh overall in 1:28:17. Karin Elliott was the first woman master and eleventh female finisher, 38th overall in 1:38:28.


489 athletes finished the thirteenth annual Snickers® Marathon, while another 636 completed the half marathon.

Chris Zablocki and Tamara Kozulina each add another "W" to their Tallahassee Marathon tally

Chris Zablocki took first in the Tallahassee Marathon in 2013. Tamara Kozulina was the first woman in 2008. Both runners were back in Tallahassee, Florida on Sunday morning, 3 February 2019, when Zablocki won the 45th annual Tallahassee Marathon, going 2:34:41. Kozulina was the first woman in the race for the fourth year in a row, placing fourteenth overall in 3:04:00. 155 athletes finished the 26.2-mile race.

When Zablocki and Kozulina logged their first Tallahassee Marathon victories, the race had started at Florida State University, running down to Woodville before turning around and returning to campus. Since then the course had changed, and the 2019 Marathon started downtown in front of the Leon County Courthouse. Marathon morning was foggy. Behind the starting line the upper floors of the Capitol were obscured by the mist. The Old Capitol, closer and not as tall, was still visible, the backdrop for the 7:30 AM start.

Zablocki was a New Englander at the time of his 2013 visit to Tallahassee, but he had managed to do some impressive racing in the South, including wins at the 2014 Jacksonville Marathon, the 2015 Albany Marathon, and the 2016 Albany Marathon. A second Tallahassee title had eluded him, though. In the 2015 Tallahassee Marathon he had finished runner-up, 300 meters behind Mark Chepses.


No one was that close to Zablocki in 2019. Now based in Chicago, eight kilometers into the Marathon he was already 400 meters ahead. By halfway, that margin was 1500 meters. Zablocki slowed during the second half and his lead narrowed slightly, but he was never challenged on his way to the finish line on West Madison Street in College Town, where he arrived in a winning 2:34:41. Austin Whitelaw ran a strong second half to take second in 2:39:34. Charlie Johnson, runner-up in the 2018 Tallahassee Marathon, placed third in 2:41:31. Columbia, South Carolina athlete Orinthal Striggles edged Ian Brown of Americus, Georgia for top master runner honors in the marathon, 2:54:18 to 2:54:28. Striggles and Brown were seventh and eighth overall.

While Zablocki was wrapping up his second Tallahassee Marathon win, Tamara Kozulina was working on her fifth title in the race and her fourth in a row--a streak that started in the 2016 race. Kozulina kept that streak alive and then some. A marathon is just over 42 kilometers long, and the Clermont master runner finished just over four kilometers ahead of the next woman in the race. 3:04:00 wasn't her fastest Tallahassee Marathon, but it didn't have to be. San Ramon, California master runner Jennifer Bayliss was second in the women's standings, placing 22nd overall in 3:23:48. Alyssa Terry of Tallahassee took third in the women's standings and and 25th overall in 3:31:01.

In the Half-Marathon race, Gainesville, Florida athlete Sergey Zyrianov led at eight kilometers, but Will Christian was on his trail. Lieutenant Commander Christian had been in Tallahassee with the All-Navy Cross-Country Team, competing in the 2019 USATF Cross-Country National Championship. Less than 24 hours after posting a 31:02 in a ten-kilometer cross-country race at Apalachee Regional Park, Christian was on the streets of Tallahassee chasing Zyrianov. Christian caught the Gainesville runner, leaving him over 400 meters behind as he raced to a 67:47 win. Zyrianov took second in 69:09, and Ryan Barrow of Thiboxaux, Louisiana was third in 78:54. David Graf of Tallahassee, Florida was the fastest master runner in the half marathon, placing fourth overall in 79:49.

As a Colquitt High senior, Elizabeth Funderburk had raced the 2018 Tallahassee Half-Marathon, running 88:56 and coming in third in the women's division. As a Florida State frosh taking a redshirt season in indoor track, Funderburk was back in 2019 with visions of running 80:00 and moving up to first. Another Georgia native, Ann Centner, also had ambitions of winning the women's title. Centner, a Ph.D. candidate in nutrition science at Florida State, had a personal best of 85:02 from the 2018 Albany Snickers Half Marathon. Based on past performance, you'd give the edge to Centner.

Funderburk, however, was giving nothing to Centner. At eight kilometers the two were racing together, leading the women's field. During the next few kilometers, Funderburk broke away, and with seven kilometers to go she was a little over 30 meters ahead of Centner. Funderburk stretched out that lead to nearly 300 meters on the way to College Town, where she crossed the finish line in 80:00, the first woman and fifth overall in the half marathon. Centner finished runner-up on the women's side and seventh overall in 81:00. Lyubov Denisova of Gainesville, Florida was the first woman master and third female finisher in the half marathon, eighth overall in 84:18.

813 athletes finished the 2019 Tallahassee Half-Marathon. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed both races, with help from RaceSmith of Saint Augustine, Florida.
