Leonardo Canete caps a winning July with Albany's Back The Blue 5K

In 2023, July was a month with five Saturdays. And on each of those Saturdays, Leonardo Canete won a distance race. On 1 July 2023, the Tallahassee master runner was in Columbus, Georgia, taking first in the Big Dog Heatwave Five Mile. On 8 July 2023 he was victorious in Tallahassee, Florida at the Swamp Forest Trail 7K. On 15 July 2023 he was a winner in Valdosta, Georgia at the Barnes 5K. 22 July 2023 found Canete on Saint George Island, Florida winning the Summer Sizzler 5K. And on 29 July 2023, Leonardo Canete completed a month of wins by taking first in Alabany, Georgia's sixth annual Back The Blue 5K, running 16:14. Alexia Sokolowski, a senior on the Worth County High cross-country team, was the first woman in the race, coming in eleventh overall in 21:21.


Just over a hundred meters behind Canete, a duel for second had developed. Anthony Bordanaro ended up taking the runner-up spot over Andrew Bradford, 16:39 to 16:40. Graham Harrod, a senior year cross-country runner at Crisp High, was fourth in 16:50.


Kali Nicholson, a Lee County High junior on her school's cross-country team, placed third on the women's side and fourteenth overall in 21:58. Another high school cross-country runner, Mount Zion High senior Valeria Aguirre, was the third woman and 24th overall in 28:13. Laurel Jacobs was the first woman master and sixth female finisher, 28th overall in 29:34.

Master runners Jerome Gray and Stacey Parker rule Albany's Saint Patrick's Day 5K

Saint Patrick's Day, 17 March 2023, fell on a Friday. So in Albany, Georgia they didn't wait till Saturday for the third annual Saint Patrick's Day 5K. The race was actually on Saint Patrick's Day, starting from the Veteran's Park Amphitheater. Albany master runner Jerome Gray won the 3.1-mile race along the Flint River, posting a winning time of 24:05. Leesburg, Georgia master runner Stacey Parker was the first woman in the race, placing eighth overall in 29:30.


Another Leesburg master runner, Robert Lince, was the overall runner-up in 25:26. Robert Ford of Albany took third with a 25:56.


Emily Vincent of Leesburg nabbed second in the women's division, placing ninth overall in 30:18. Master runner Melissa Conyers was the third female finisher, tenth overall in 20:23.


30 athletes finished Albany, Georgia's 2023 Saint Patrick's Day 5K. Bud Light and the Flint River Entertainment Complex were the presenting sponsors. Hardy Race Timing Services of Perry, Georgia timed and scored the race.

Joshua Grant races to a record at the Resolution Run

Joshua Grant's first race of 2019 was the fourth annual Resolution Run 5K in Albany, Georgia. Grant finished second, just a second behind Dr. Patrick Whitehead, who won in a Resolution Run record of 18:08.


Grant wasn't having any of that at the fifth annual Resolution Run. On Wednesday morning, 1 January 2020, he won the 3.1-mile race by more than 400 meters, setting a new event record of 17:39. Master runner Sara Ostrander was the top woman for the third year in the five-year history of the race, outkicking Jennifer Perkins for the win. Both runners were clocked in 22:24.


Michael Martinez of Tallahassee, Florida was the first master runner in the race, placing second overall in 19:16. Edward Ostrander, a sophomore on the Lee County High cross-country team, took third with a 20:57.


Racing for the first women's spot, Sara Ostrander and Jennifer Perkins finished eighth and ninth overall. Alma Ostrander took third in the women's standings, placing eleventh overall in 23:18. An eighth-grader at Lee County County Middle School East, Ostrander runs on her school's girls' cross-country team.


63 athletes finished the 2020 Resolution Run 5K.

Amanda An wins it all in the Jingle Bell Jog 10K

In Albany, Georgia the Phoebe Foundation hosted the 31st annual Jingle Bell Jog on Saturday morning, 14 December 2019. So it's not surprising that quite a few employees of Phoebe Health were out on the streets that morning running one of the two races, 10K or 5K. One Phoebe physician, Amanda An, won the 10K, finishing first overall in 41:47. Julio Perez was the top male finisher, placing second overall in 42:03.


A resident in family medicine, An had won the women's title in the 2018 Jingle Bell Jog 5K, coming in second overall. Stepping up to the longer race in 2019, she was second to no one this time around.


The first master runner in the 10K was Sean McConnell, second in the men's standings and third overall in 43:13. Albany master runner Herbert Fritz was the third male finisher and fourth overall in 43:35. Behind Fritz, Jaren Hill edged John Kilpatrick for the fourth men's spot, 43:39 to 43:41. Hill and Kilpatrick were fifth and sixth overall.


Phoebe Judge of Newton, Georgia was the women's runner-up, coming in thirteenth overall in 45:53. Caroline Taylor, a senior on the Lee County High cross-country team, was third in the women's division and 22nd overall in 47:44. Americus, Georgia athlete Amber DeBaise was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, 25th overall in 49:48.


148 athletes finished the 2019 Jingle Bell Jog 10K.

Courtland Buntin of Albany was first in the 5K, going 18:24. Russell Coleman was the first master runner in that 3.1-mile race, placing second to Buntin in 18:54. Westover High junior-year cross-country runner Jaali Hart was third on the men's list and fourth overall in 20:06.


Brittney Skiles was the first woman in the Jingle Bell Jog 5K, placing third overall in 19:57. It was Skiles' eighth Jingle Bell Jog title; she had also won the race in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2013, 2014, and 2015. The 2018 champion, Amanda An, back on the road after her 10K win earlier in the morning, was second in the women's standings and sixth overall in 20:42. Allie Brown, a junior on the Crisp High girls' cross-country team, was third in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 22:08. Jo Beth Maxwell of Leesburg, Georgia was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, placing 25th overall in 24:22.

Jaren Hill and Cheryl Porzi ran wild at the Through The Zoo 5K

Past curious meercats and indifferent cheetahs, dozens of athletes raced through the ground of the Chehaw Park zoo, north of Albany, Georgia, on Saturday morning, 21 September 2019. It was the eighth annual Chehaw Through The Zoo 5K, and the first to finish the 3.1-mile event was Jaren Hill. An Americus, Georgia athlete, Hill finished the race in 22:06. Cheryl Porzi of Valdosta, Georgia was the first woman in the race, placing fifth overall in 23:56.


Chris Holt of Thomasville, Georgia took the runner-up spot with a 22:17. Cam Cook, a seventh-grader on the Colquitt County Middle School cross-country team, was third overall in 23:02. Bo Moore was the fastest master runner in the 5K, fifth in the men's standings and sixth overall in 24:26.


Gail Morris placed second in the women's standings with a 26:19, good for tenth overall. Caitlin Mixon was the third woman and twelfth overall in 26:55. Jennifer Napier was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, sixteenth overall in 29:07.

Neither Thomas Rischar nor Allie Brown was singing the blues at the Back The Blue 5K

137 athletes finished the Back The Blue 5K in Albany, Georgia on Saturday morning, 3 August 2019, more than ever before in the four-year history of the annual road race. Thomas Rischar was the fastest in that group. Rischar, a senior on the cross-country team at Crisp County High, won the 3.1-mile race by nearly half a minute, running 17:06. Another Crisp High harrier, junior Allie Brown, took the women's title, placing ninth overall in 21:22.


Albany's Jake Clawson grabbed the runner-up spot with a 17:35. Clawson is currently the cross-country coach at Deerfield Windsor School, formerly he was a distance runner at Western Carolina University. Sherrick Davis of Lynchburg, Virginia was third, running 18:34.


Emily Phillips, a sophomore on the Lee County High cross-country team, ran 22:28 to place second in the women's standings and fourteenth overall. Yet another prep harriers, Deerfield Windsor eighth-grader Trace Bridges, was the third woman and sixteenth overall in 22:57.


Paul Berna was the fastest master runner in the race, placing 21st in the men's standings and 25th overall in 24:23. Gunawati Gunawan was the first woman master and sixth female finisher, 32nd overall in 25:27.

Ringing victories for Will Tomlinson and Kelly Cleary at the Saved By The Bell 5K

In Albany, Georgia on Saturday morning, 27 April 2019, Will Tomlinson won the second annual Saved By The Bell 5K, running 20:55. Kelly Cleary was the first woman in the race, placing seventh overall in 23:35.


The front of the race was dominated by young runners, starting with overall winner Will Tomlinson. Tomlinson is a sophomore on the Lee County High cross-country team. Ben Phillips is a junior on that same team; he was second in 21:42. Two twelve-year-old athletes battled for third place, with Ethan Askew edging Christian Jackson for the spot, both runners clocked in 23:18. Seth Tomlinson, another junior-year harrier at Lee County High, was fifth in 23:33. The first master runner in the race was Glenn Palmer, sixth overall in 23:35.


The first woman master was JoBeth Maxwell, second in the women's standings and 23rd overall in 25:18. A couple of steps behind at 25:20, Donielle Powell was the third female finisher and 24th overall.


256 athletes finished the 2019 Saved By The Bell 5K.

Eliud Ngetich and Stephanie Pezzullo topple the defending champs of the Albany Snickers® Marathon

Sergei Zyrianov won the Albany, Georgia Snickers® Marathon in 2017 and again in 2018. Lyubov Denisova was the first woman in the Albany, Georgia Snickers® Marathon in 2017 and again in 2018. Saturday morning, 2 March 2019, was the thirteenth annual Albany Marathon, and thirteen wasn't a lucky number for the defending champions. That morning, Zyrianov shared the lead with Eliud Ngetich for almost the entire 26.2 miles of the race, but at the finish line Ngetich got the win, 2:20:01 to 2:20:02. In the women's competition, Denisova ran 2:45:28, her fastest effort yet in Albany, but finished runner-up to Stephanie Pezzullo, who placed fourth overall in 2:42:50.


Nathaneal Williams ran with Ngetich and Zyrianov for more than ten miles, but by the halfway mark of the race he had fallen behind the two leaders. After spending the second half of the race watching Ngetich and Zyrianov pull out of sight, Williams finished third in 2:28:48. Eric Kujawski was the first male master and ninth in the men's standings, eleventh overall in 2:49:40.


The first master runner in the race, though, was Lyubov Denisova, the second female finisher. After running with women's leader Pezzullo early in the race, Denisova gave up ground after the five mile mark. After ten miles the race was over, with Pezzullo going on to take the women's title in 2:42:50 and Denisova following in 2:45:28. At 3:00:05, Natalia Wilcox was third in the women's standings and 24th overall.

Four months before the Albany Snickers® Marathon, Reinhardt College junior Jose Diaz earned NAIA All-American status in men's cross-country. In Albany, Diaz won the half-marathon race, running the 13.1 miles in 1:13:09. Evan Beauchamp took second in 1:16:52, and Jose Manuel Santana was third in 1:18:30. Raymond Green was the fastest master runner in the half marathon, placing sixth overall in 1:23:44.


Katja Blunden of Destin, Florida took the women's title in the half marathon, coming in seventh overall in 1:26:12. Molly Willams finished runner-up to Blunden on the women's side and eighth overall in 1:27:13. Albany's own Jennifer Perkins was the third woman finisher and eleventh overall in 1:28:17. Karin Elliott was the first woman master and eleventh female finisher, 38th overall in 1:38:28.


489 athletes finished the thirteenth annual Snickers® Marathon, while another 636 completed the half marathon.

Patrick Whitehead and Ann Centner break records, not resolutions, at Albany's New Year race

Did you resolve to avoid drama in 2019? I hope you weren't in Albany, Georgia for the fourth annual Resolution Run 5K. Racing all the way to the finish line, Patrick Whitehead barely held off a challenge from Joshua Grant to win 18:08 to 18:09, the two fastest times in the history of the event. Just over half a minute after Whitehead and Grant had flashed across the line, Ann Centner sped in at 18:56, more than three minutes faster than any woman ever at the Resolution Run.


Whitehead's time was nearly a minute better than the previous event record, the 19:03 run by Arnoldo DeJesus in 2016 at the inaugural Resolution Run. Edward Ostrander, a frosh runner on the Lee County High cross-country team, was third in the men's standings behind Whitehead and Grant, placing fourth overall in 20:46. Another Lee County High cross-country runner, junior Benjamin Phillips, was the fourth male and fifth overall in 22:27. Ben Crump was the fastest master runner in the Resolution Run, the fifth man in the race and sixth overall in 22:27.


Before Centner's 18:56, the fastest women's performance at the Resolution Run had been the 22:15 posted by master runner Sara Ostrander in the 2018 race. This year, Ostrander was the women's runner up, running 23:29 and placing eighth overall. Alma Ostrander, a standout seventh-grader on the Lee County Middle School cross-country squad, took third in the women's division and eleventh overall in 24:03.


61 athletes finished Albany's fourth annual Resolution Run 5K. If you prefer athletic drama to emotional drama, put the fifth annual Resolution Run on your racing calendar for 1 January 2020.

Henry Plowden and Alli Hay would run fast at the Will Run For S'Mores 5K

Henry Plowden wrapped up his cross-country season with Westover High School at the GHSA State Championship on 3 November 2018, finishing ninth in the 4A boys 5K. Alli Hay finished her cross-country season with Columbus State University at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional on 17 November 2018, finishing 43rd in the women's 6K. Cross-country season may have been over, but running season never ends. On Saturday morning, 15 December 2018, both of those athletes were on the streets of Albany, Georgia for Wild Side Running's sixth annual Will Run For S'Mores 5K. Plowden was the overall winner, going 17:59. Hay was the first woman in the race, placing second overall in 18:39.


Courtland Buntin took second in the men's standings, coming in third overall in 19:25. Austin Thaxton was the third man and fourth overall in 19:30. Carl Plowden was the fastest master runner in the race, finishing as the eighth man and tenth overall in 20:52.


Just ahead of Carl Plowden, Amanda An finished ninth overall in 20:51, the second woman in the race. Twelve-year-old Trace Bridges, a seventh-grader on the Deerfield Windsor School middle school cross-country team, placed third in the women's standings and eighteenth overall in 22:38. Sara Ostrander, the women's winner of the 2017 S'Mores 5K, was the top woman master and fifth female finisher in the 2018 race, placing twentieth overall in 22:51.

Henry Plowden and Ann Centner both ring the bell a second time in the Jingle Bell Jog 10K

Saturday, 8 December 2018, was a morning for defending champions in Albany, Georgia's 30th annual Jingle Bell Jog 10K. Henry Plowden won the 6.2-mile race for the second year in a row, running 37:44--over a minute faster than his winning time in 2017. Ann Centner of Blakely, Georgia successfully defended her title as the top woman in the 10K, placing second overall in 39:13.


Plowden was coming off a successful high school cross-country season; just five weeks earlier the Westover High junior had taken ninth in the GHSA-4A boys' race at the State Championships. The top master runner in the Jingle Bell Jog 10K was Carl Plowden, second in the men's standings and third overall in 45:12. Jaren Hill of Americus, Georgia was the third male finisher and fourth overall in 45:38.


Cordele, Georgia's Stacey McGarr was the first woman master in the 10K and second female finisher, eighth overall in 47:05. Danice Roberts of Leesburg, Georgia took third on the women's side, placing thirteenth overall in 49:16.

Back before Henry Plowden won his first Jingle Bell Jog 10K, he was the 2016 Jingle Bell Jog 5K champ. In the 2018 edition of the shorter race, Edward Ostrander of Leesburg, Georgia took first. A frosh runner on the Lee County High cross-country team, Ostrander ran the 3.1-mile race in 20:27. Amanda An of Ellicott City, Maryland was the women's champ, placing second overall in 20:48.


Right behind An, Bill Fricks of Leesburg, Georgia was the top master runner in the 5K, placing third overall in 20:49. Conner Mullen, an eighth-grader on the Worth County Middle School cross-country team, was the third male finisher and fourth overall in 21:05.


Ramsay Miller, a first-year athlete on the Point University cross-country team, was the women's runner-up in the 5K, placing ninth overall in 21:55. Leesburg's Sara Ostrander was the first woman master and third female finisher, eighteenth overall in 23:28.


129 athletes finished the 2018 Jingle Bell Jog 10K, while another 386 completed the 5K. Both races were timed by Orion Racing of Atlanta, Georgia. All proceeds of the Jingle Bell Jog go to the beneift of Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

A buffet of racing at Barney's Run For Warriors

If you want to run a marathon in Albany, Georgia, the obvious choice is the Snickers® Marathon, held each March since 2007. If you don't want to wait for spring, though, then there's the Barney's Run For Warriors Marathon in the fall. Just like its springtime sibling, Barney's Marathon has a USATF-certified course and a half-marathon option on a USATF-certified course. The Run For Warriors also includes 10K, 5K, and one-mile races, something you won't see at the Snickers. All the courses are USATF certified, except for the mile.


Unlike the Snickers®, you won't see a mob of participants at the Run For Warriors. While 489 athletes finished the 2018 Snickers® Marathon, only two completed Barney's Run For Warriors Marathon on Saturday morning, 17 November 2018--master runner Janine Grinage won the race in 3:31:43, and Deb Potash took second in 4:19:37. Maybe there were too many choices?


More athletes opted for the Run For Warriors Half Marathon. Like the marathon, a woman was the overall winner. Jennifer Perkins covered the 13.1 miles around Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany in a winning 1:30:31, finishing two-and-a-half kilometers ahead of the next runner. Master runner Robert Pilcher was the first man across the finish line, placing second overall in 1:42:57. Karen McNally was the top woman master and third female finisher in the half marathon, placing sixth overall in 1:53:41.

Not all the Run For Warriors races went to women. Master runner Carl Plowden won the 10K, running 44:53. Chris Phillips took second in 47:19, and Cameron Goldsmith was third in 49:53.


Emily Stickles was the first woman in the 10K, placing fourth overall in 53:58. Just behind Stickles, Rebecca Bowers, a junior on the Lee County High cross-country team, was second on the women's side and fifth overall in 54:06. Madelyn Carter was the top woman master in the race, placing third in the women's standings and ninth overall in 57:54.

The 5K was full of high school cross-country runners, with Deerfield-Windsor School harriers taking the first two spots. Seventh-grader Garrison Slaughter won the race by a ton, finishing with a lead of 300 meters in 20:53.Jackson Belusko, another Deerfield Windsor seventh-grader, grabbed the runner-up spot in 22:14. Samuel Williamson, a sophomore on the Westover High cross-country team, placed third in 22:37. There were more schoolboy distance runners across the finish line before the first master runner, David Pollock, finished the race eighth in 24:57.


Master runner Maryann Plowden was the first woman in the 5K, placing tenth overall in 25:19. Twelve-year-old Milla McEwen was second in the women's standings and fourteenth overall in 26:16. Master runner Judy Lindsy was the third woman and sixteenth overall in 26:44.
