David Williams and Jennifer Perkins had a big inning at the Home Run 5K

Saturday morning, 1 June 2019, dawned hot in Americus, Georgia. The racing on the roads of Americus was equally hot that morning, as David Williams won the First United Methodist Church's seventh annual Home Run 5K, running 19:48. Hot on his heels was runner-up Jennifer Perkins, the women's champ in 19:54.


Seventeen-year-old Williams is a rising junior at Schley County High in Ellaville, Georgia where he runs cross-country and track for the Wildcats. Jaren Hill was second to Williams in the men's standings, placing third overall in 22:09. Jerry Brown was the first master runner in the 5K and the third male finisher, fourth overall in 22:44.


An Albany, Georgia athlete, Jennifer Perkins came very close to winning the 5K outright, finishing just a few steps behind David Williams. It wouldn't have been the first race where Perkins was first overall as well as the first woman; just over six months earlier she had taken the top spot in the half marathon at Barney's Run For Warriors in Albany. In Americus, Perkins' 19:54 was a new Home Run 5K record for women.


Rebecca Bowers finished runner-up to Perkins in the women's division of the Home Run 5K. A rising senior on the Lee County High cross-country team, Bowers placed thirteenth overall in 27:31. Alicia Turner was the third woman and fifteenth overall in 29:52.


51 athletes finished the 2019 Home Run 5K. Flatlander Sports of Leesburg, Georgia timed the race.

A buffet of racing at Barney's Run For Warriors

If you want to run a marathon in Albany, Georgia, the obvious choice is the Snickers® Marathon, held each March since 2007. If you don't want to wait for spring, though, then there's the Barney's Run For Warriors Marathon in the fall. Just like its springtime sibling, Barney's Marathon has a USATF-certified course and a half-marathon option on a USATF-certified course. The Run For Warriors also includes 10K, 5K, and one-mile races, something you won't see at the Snickers. All the courses are USATF certified, except for the mile.


Unlike the Snickers®, you won't see a mob of participants at the Run For Warriors. While 489 athletes finished the 2018 Snickers® Marathon, only two completed Barney's Run For Warriors Marathon on Saturday morning, 17 November 2018--master runner Janine Grinage won the race in 3:31:43, and Deb Potash took second in 4:19:37. Maybe there were too many choices?


More athletes opted for the Run For Warriors Half Marathon. Like the marathon, a woman was the overall winner. Jennifer Perkins covered the 13.1 miles around Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany in a winning 1:30:31, finishing two-and-a-half kilometers ahead of the next runner. Master runner Robert Pilcher was the first man across the finish line, placing second overall in 1:42:57. Karen McNally was the top woman master and third female finisher in the half marathon, placing sixth overall in 1:53:41.

Not all the Run For Warriors races went to women. Master runner Carl Plowden won the 10K, running 44:53. Chris Phillips took second in 47:19, and Cameron Goldsmith was third in 49:53.


Emily Stickles was the first woman in the 10K, placing fourth overall in 53:58. Just behind Stickles, Rebecca Bowers, a junior on the Lee County High cross-country team, was second on the women's side and fifth overall in 54:06. Madelyn Carter was the top woman master in the race, placing third in the women's standings and ninth overall in 57:54.

The 5K was full of high school cross-country runners, with Deerfield-Windsor School harriers taking the first two spots. Seventh-grader Garrison Slaughter won the race by a ton, finishing with a lead of 300 meters in 20:53.Jackson Belusko, another Deerfield Windsor seventh-grader, grabbed the runner-up spot in 22:14. Samuel Williamson, a sophomore on the Westover High cross-country team, placed third in 22:37. There were more schoolboy distance runners across the finish line before the first master runner, David Pollock, finished the race eighth in 24:57.


Master runner Maryann Plowden was the first woman in the 5K, placing tenth overall in 25:19. Twelve-year-old Milla McEwen was second in the women's standings and fourteenth overall in 26:16. Master runner Judy Lindsy was the third woman and sixteenth overall in 26:44.

Scales and Perkins top the 10K at Albany's Jingle Bell Jog

They came from the north, they came from the south, but they all came to Albany, Georgia's Tift Park on Saturday morning, 10 December 2016 for the 29th annual Jingle Bell Jog. From the north, master runner Jerome Scales came from McDonough, Georgia to win the 10K race in 38:14. Grigory Bourlakov came from the south--Mary Esther, Florida--to take second in the 6.2-mile event, running 44:37. And from Albany itself, Ashton Donahue, a junior on the Baconton Charter cross-country team, was third in 44:59. His Baconton Charter teammate, Gregory Manning, was fourth in 45:10.


Jennifer Perkins of Albany took the women's title, placing fifth overall in 45:22. Leesburg, Georgia's Alicia Murphy was the women's runner-up and tenth overall in 47:53. Vienna, Georgia athlete Caitlin Mixon was third in the women's standings and thirteenth overall in 49:15. Maryann Plowden of Albany was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, fourteenth overall in 49:21.

2015 Jingle Bell Jog 5K runner-up Henry Plowden returned to the race in 2016. This time, though, the Westover High freshman cross-country runner won the race in 18:46. Trevor Cleveland, a junior on the Lee County High cross-country team, took second in 19:57. Gian Kerlegon, a junior on the Albany High cross-country team, was third in 20:08.


The top five athletes in the men's standings of the 5K were all high school cross-country runners. The women's standings started out much the same way, with Deerfield-Windsor junior Camryn Bridges taking the title in 20:58, good for eleventh overall. Deerfield-Windsor frosh Charlotte Augenstein was the second woman and twelfth overall in 21:06. Leesburg, Georgia's Chris Phillips interrupted the parade of schoolgirls, taking third on the women's side in 21:20 and placing seventeenth overall.


The Jingle Bell Jog races moved to new routes this year, with USATF certified courses for both the 10K (GA16073WC) and the 5K (GA16046WC). Proceeds from the 2016 Jingle Bell Jog will fund the purchase of a Giraffe bed for the Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital NICU.

Repeat wins for Harvest Run record-holders Whitehead and Perkins

Dr. Patrick Whitehead made it two in a row, winning the Leesburg, Georgia Harvest Run 10K for the second year in a row on Saturday morning, 24 November 2016. The Darton State College professor ran 36:45 in the third annual event, finishing more than 900 meters ahead of the runner-up. On the women's side, Jennifer Perkins was also a repeat winner in the third annual event. Perkins had won the women's title in inaugural 10K in 2014; after an absence in 2015 she returned to finish as top woman in 2016, placing seventh overall in 44:47.


Behind Dr. Whitehead, Arnoldo DeJesus was second in the 6.2-mile race with a 40:31. Trailing DeJesus by 40 meters, Dennis Moore was the top master runner, placing third overall in 40:41.


Jennifer Romano was the top woman master and second female finisher, tenth overall in 46:51. Kathryn Daniel was third in the women's standings and fifteenth overall in 52:08.


In addition to being repeat winners, Patrick Whitehead and Jennifer Perkins were both record holders in the event. Whitehead set the Harvest Run men's record of 36:11 in 2015, and Perkins the women's record of 41:32 in 2014. In the 2016 Harvest Run 5K Brian Miller also became a record holder. The Southland Academy alumnus won the 3.1-mile race in 18:34, eclipsing the old mark of 18:46 set by Henry Plowden in 2015. Aaron Pinckard, a distance runner on the Schley County Middle School cross-country team, was second in the 5K, running 19:18. Lee County junior-year cross-country runner Trevor Cleveland took third with a 20:32.


Kayla Sanseverino won the women's title in the 5K, placing eighth overall in 22:27. Severino is a sophomore on the cross-country team at Douglas High in Parkland, Florida. Twelve-year-old Emily Phillips was second in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 23:07. Ramsay Miller, a junior on the Lee County High cross-country team, was the third female finisher and twelfth overall in 23:48. Budd Bramlett was the top master runner in the 5K, placing ninth overall in 22:46. Betsy Goslin was the first woman master and sixth female finisher, 27th overall in 27:45.


44 athletes finished the 10K and 76 the 5K at the third annual Harvest Run. Proceeds of the event benefit the Challenger League for Special Needs Youth and the Lee County Wrestling Program.

Jennifer Perkins goes a few laps with the leprechauns in Albany

Each January for quite a few years, Saint Teresa's Church in Albany, Georgia has invited runners to try to "beat the running nun" at the Nun Run 5K. Similarly, each March since 2014, Albany's Saint Patrick's Church has hosted the Lap A Leprechaun races. I understand that the nun is always a ringer. I don't know if anyone has ever seen the Leprechaun, but Leprechauns are supernatural creatures after all--one of the sidhe. It would be hard to tell if you had lapped one of the wee folk, or if any of them are even there.


At the third annual Lap A Leprechaun on Saturday morning, 19 March 2016, if anyone lapped a leprechaun it was Jennifer Perkins. Perkins won the 6.2-mile race in 39:00, a new women's record for the event. In fact, it was the fastest Lap A Leprechaun 10K ever for either men or women. Master runner Oscar Viquez was the men's champ and overall runner-up, clocking 45:32. Kricia Morris was the second woman and third overall, running 46:37. Karen McNally was the top woman master and third female finisher, placing fourth overall in 48:12.

Lee County Middle School cross country runners swept the titles in the third annual Lap A Leprechaun 5K. Eighth-grader Ben Phillips took the men's title in 20:14, and eighth-grader Victoria Natoli was the women's champ and sixth overall in 23:45.

Lee County high sophomore Jacob Blakey finished runner-up in 21:19. The fastest master runner in the 3.1-mile race was Thomas Talley, fourth overall in 22:07. Helen Bland was the top woman master and second female finisher, ninth overall in 25:59.
