Wright Calhoun knocks another one out of the park at the Home Run 5K

Wright Calhoun was going, going, gone at the Home Run 5K in Americus, Georgia on Saturday morning, 3 June 2016. Running 17:20, the Columbus State University Cougar cross-country runner won the 3.1-mile race by 900 meters. Kimberly Dove of Byron, Georgia earned the women's title, placing sixth overall in 22:41. 47 athletes finished the fifth annual event.


With the win, Calhoun successfully defended his 2016 title in the race. Calhoun had also won the Home Run 5K in 2014, when he set the course record of 16:55. Jaren Hill, an alumnus of the Americus-Sumter High cross-country team, was runner-up in 21:09. Logan Collins of Americus took third in 22:18. Americus athlete Chad Bell was the first master runner and fourth overall finisher, running 22:18.


Charlene Pennymon of Americus was the first woman master and second female finisher, placing seventh overall in 23:05. Huntsville, Alabama master runner Sharon Steelman placed third in the women's standings and eighteenth overall in 28:38.


Proceeds of the 2017 Home Run 5K went to benefit the Americus Campus of the Methodist Children's Home of South Georgia.
