Epstein and Howes earn props at the Props Father's Day 5K

2017 Props Brewery Father's Day 5KIt was Austin Epstein's day at the Father's Day 5K. On Saturday evening, 17 June 2017, Epstein won Props Brewery's first-year event by more than 70 meters, running 17:31 through the streets of Fort Walton Beach. Claudia Howes was the first woman in the race, placing eleventh overall in 21:51.


Epstein, the overall winner, had just graduated from Navarre High, where he was a 2016 District champion in cross country and a 2017 District champion in two events on the track, the 1600 and the 3200. Tim Kogge was second to Epstein in 17:47, and Steve Harris placed third overall in 18:18. Karl Denninger was the fastest master runner in the 5K, finishing fourteenth overall in 22:59.


Placing twentieth overall, Julie Houtman edged Paula Piazza for the runner-up spot in the women's standings, 23:55 to 23:58. Piazza was the first woman master in the race and 21st overall.


The inaugural Father's Day 5K was contested on a flat, out-and-back course starting and finishing at Props Brewery and Tap Room, 125 Lovejoy Road, in Fort Walton Beach. 180 athletes finished the race.
