Luca and Clendinen conquer the Owl Run

Over the years, the meet has been called Champs Day, the Everhart Invitational, and (most recently) the Owl Run. Whatever you want to call it, though, it was the third middle-school cross-country meet of the 2010 season for Leon County Schools, and was hosted with the usual panache by Gretchen Everhart School.

The middle school girls two-mile race started just after 10:45am. After a little more than a quarter mile, Swift Creek's Madeline Horgan was setting the pace for the field, with a horde of runners right on her heels. By the end of the first mile the lead pack had dwindled to four--Horgan, Raa's Rebecca Clendinen and Lindsay Hughes, and Zoe Sheldon of Swift Creek tucked in behind them. The four passed the mile mark in 6:58. A quarter mile later Horgan, Clendinen, and Hughes had started to slip away from Sheldon. The runners returned to the schoolyard, and with a quarter-mile to go, Clendinen was out in front, followed by Hughes and then Horgan. As they raced to the finish line Hughes closed on Clendinen, but couldn't quite close the gap. It was Clendinen and then Hughes, both clocked in 13:57. The win was Clendinen's third this season. Horgan followed in third at 14:10, with Sheldon fourth in 14:23. Christiana Dogan (5th, 14:40) and Kelly Irvin (9th, 14:56) also put up top ten finishes for Raa, and the Rams ended up with 28 points and their eighth straight Owl Run team title. Horgan and Sheldon led Swift Creek to a 53-point total, good enough for second place. Montford was third with 67 points.

The boys' two-mile race followed. After finishing runner-up last Wednesday at Fort Braden, Raa's Wil Luca returned to the top at the Owl Run. Luca took the lead early, hit the one mile in front at 5:45, and outran his teammate Sukhi Kosla for the win, 11:41 to 11:53. Anthony Walker of Cobb ran 12:02 for third, breaking up Raa's chance at their third perfect score this season. Nevertheless, the Raa boys won the Owl Run team title for the eighth year in a row, scoring 18 points. Montford took home the runner-up trophy with 64 points, and the Swift Creek boys scored 87 points for third.

The oldest meet of the Leon County Schools' middle-school cross-country season, the Owl Run has the most history on any event on the circuit. Many Owl Run winners have gone on to have storied high school cross country careers. In particular, Joe Franklin and Carly Thomas went on to win state championships. Still the Owl Run is only the third event of the four-meet season, and the league championship meet remains to be run next Wednesday, 6 October 2010, at the Apalachee Regional Park Trail.

Tales from the Trail, the second annual Quail Trail

With a menu that included a 5K road race and an invitational cross-country meet, the second annual Quail Trail was like a distance-running buffet. You might not like everything on the table, but you certainly could find something to satisfy your athletic appetites. The event was held south of Thomasville, Georgia at Pebble Hill Plantation. Competition opened at 8:00am ET on 25 September 2010 with the Quail Trail 5K road race, continued with a high school girls' invitational 5K cross-country run, a high school boys' invitational 5K cross-country run, and a two-mile middle school race.

Quail Trail Open 5K

The morning of running started on the back lawn of the main house of Pebble Hill with over 200 runners charging toward a narrow gap in a hedge leading onto a gravel driveway. Florida State University grad student Kevin Cook was in the lead by the end of the first half mile. By the mile mark Cook was in command, running by himself well out in front. "The first mile was okay," recalled Cook after the race, "but the uphills on the second mile were tough." Cook's splits reflected that, as he ran 4:58 on the opening mile but fell to 5:07 on the next. He responded with a 5:01 third mile, and finished the race with a 15:41 victory. The runner-up, FSU cross-country runner Dominick Cabrera, was at least 200 meters back, finishing in 16:27. Thomasville's John Carico was the top master in the race, placing 21st overall in 20:05.

Kara Taylor didn't have quite as easy a time in the women's race as Cook did with the men. Taylor was among a large group of other members of the FSU women's cross-country team early in the race. At the mile she was in front, but just barely--Chelsi Woodruff and Kaitlyn Iselborn were a step behind, with Kailand Cosgrove not much farther back. Taylor broke away in the second half of the race, though, outrunning Iselborn for the win, 18:40 to 18:57. Behind Iselborn, Woodruff hung on for third in 19:15, while Lauren Ross moved up to beat out Cosgrove for fourth, 19:37 to 19:39.

"The only tough thing about the first mile was the fumes and dust that the Gator was kicking up," commented Cook. Actually, the lead vehicle was a Kawasaki Mule rather than a Gator, but it was kicking up a lot of dust on the unpaved parts of the course--the roads were dry after many days without rain. A lead bicycle might have made things more comfortable for the leaders. Still, Cook and the rest of the runners have to count themselves luckier than last year's Quail Trail competitors. In the 2009 race, the lead vehicle almost immediately took the runners off course and everyone got to run closer to five-and-a-half kilometers than five kilometers. That problem was solved this year, though, so maybe next year the race director can find a lead vehicle that doesn't bury the leaders in a cloud of dust and diesel.

High School Girls' Invitational 5K Cross-Country Run

While other runners started the race with a panicked charge for the lead, Stefanie Kurgatt patiently ran her own race. Around 800m the Maclay School sophomore glided into the lead. Kurgatt might have waved everyone goodbye at that point, because they saw very little of her after that. She ran away from the field to win in 20:20, Kurgatt's third straight high school cross-country win of the 2010 season. Lowndes's Allison Peters finished runner-up in 21:30, the first of four Lowndes runners to finish in the top ten. With that kind of scoring from their front four, Lowndes won the team title with 56 points. Maclay, the 2009 champions, placed second with 92 points. Florida State University School was third with 118.

High School Boys' Invitational 5K Cross-Country Run

One of the coaches at the meet was wearing a T-shirt with this slogan:

This should have been required reading for the entries in the high school boys' 5K, many of whom started off as if the race were a 100-yard dash, and many more who took off as if it were a 440-yard dash (which is what us old folks call the 400 meters). By 800m, though, Hunter Honeycutt of Tift County was at the front of the field. At the beginning of the month Honeycutt had been in Scotland, competing in the ITU Duathlon World Championships. Now he was back in Georgia, seeing how well he could race without a bicycle. Quite well, as it turned out. Honeycutt ran to a 17:28 victory, breaking David Daniels' 2009 course record of 17:39. Maclay's Jacob Coates outraced Timmy Evans of Valdosta 17:57 to 18:01 in the closing yards of the race to take the runner-up spot. Maclay put three runners in the top ten and all five of their scorers in the top twelve to total a winning 40 points, taking the team title. Valdosta was second with 66 points, and Tift County used their Ace from Honeycutt to put together an 86-point hand for third place.

Witherspoon outkicked Brookwood's Stephen Robbins for second, 11:47 to 11:48 (Robbins had run the open 5K earlier, placing ninth in 19:21). Aquilla Hayes of Tift County Middle School was the fastest girl, racing to a 12:52. Tift County's Blakely Bergeron outfought Lindsey Poole of Maclay for the runner-up spot, 13:09 to 13:10.

DJ Smith and Alice Smoot win Hahira's Bridge Run 5K

There isn't a huge number of road races in Hahira, Georgia, but on a per capita basis there may very well be more such events in Hahira than in any other town in southern Georgia. The addition on Saturday, 25 September 2010, of the Bethany Baptist Church 5K Bridge Run makes that statistic even more likely. Dale Smith sailed to a win in that first year race, running 18:01 to finish nearly 200 meters ahead of the runner up, Valdosta's Masked Avenger. Jamey Bryant, formerly a distance runner at Shaw High School (c/o 2010) in Columbus, Georgia, was third in 18:59. Mike Gilmezte (6th, 24:17) was the top male master.

Valdosta's Alice Smoot was both the fastest woman and the fastest master, placing fifth overall in 21:31. Hahira's own Jared Komatz (7th, 24:24) was the women's runner up.

Wallace and Stevens tear up the trails at "Salute to Prefontaine"

You never know what you're going to find at the Salute to Prefontaine 5K. Typically you'd expect soft sugar sand in the woods outside Tallahassee, but rain may have changed that. The Apalachicola National Forest rangers may have taken a backhoe and dug vehicle barriers on the course. Silver Lake Recreation Area, lately the race site, may be open, or it may be closed due to federal budget woes. There may be a rattlesnake in the recreation area, or there may be a black bear. And it's always possible that the race director has changed the course, as Jeff Nielsen had done again this year.

None of this seemed to worry Jay Wallace on Saturday, 25 September 2010, as he ran 18:53 to win the 35th annual Salute to Prefontaine 5K. Wallace finished a bit over 200 meters ahead of the runner up, Chris Coutts who covered the five kilometers of trails in 19:44. David Victor outkicked his fellow Wakulla High student, Stanley Linton, for third place, both clocking an identical 19:53. The defending Prefontaine 5K champion, Joel Piotrowski, finished 40th in 23:46.

A week earlier, Wallace had finished runner-up at the Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival. The same day, Kelly Stevens had finished runner-up in the women's division at the Women's Distance Festival. Just as Wallace moved up to the champion spot at the Prefontaine 5K, Stevens raced to the champion's place in the women'd division at Prefontaine, placing 22nd overall in 22:17. Stevens finished nearly 300 meters ahead of the second-place woman, Micah Adriani, who ran 23:36 for 36th place overall. Olivia Swedberg (42nd, 23:59) was the third woman in, and Nancy Stedman (54th, 25:06) crossed the line as the fourth woman and first woman master.

As to what to expect at the 36th annual Salute to Prefontaine 5K, it could be anything--a tropical storm, higher admission fees at Silver Lake, or an entirely new venue. But expect it to happen in autumn of 2011.

Hoover and Montooth win the Race of the South 10K

Ben Hoover won the eighth annual running of the new edition of Moultrie, Georgia's "Race of the South" 10K on Saturday, 24 September 2010. Hoover, a senior at Colquitt County High, completed the 6.2-mile race in 41:29, finishing 50 meters ahead of the runner-up, master runner Jack Howdeshell of Mayo, Florida. Howdeshell ran 41:42 for the 10K. Moultrie's Dawn Montooth was the first woman finisher as well as the top woman master, placing 13th overall in 50:07.

In the "Race of the South" 5K, Colquitt County High junior Landon Rehberg led the field with a 20:18. Moultrie's Kim Luque was the top female finisher, placing seventh overall in 23:12. The first male master was Tim Clark of Moultrie, eighth overall in 24:40, and the first female master was Moultrie's Glenda Strickland, 26th overall in 28:48.

The "Race of the South" goes back to the running boom days, but it faded away for a time before being revived in 2003. The race is currently hosted by the Moultrie YMCA.

Clendinen and Khosla first at Fort Braden

Rebecca Clendinen of Raa Middle School ran to her second win of the 2010 middle-school cross-country season in the girls' race at the Fort Braden School cross-country meet on Wednesday afternoon, 22 September 2010. Clendinen's time in the two-mile race was 15:01. In the boys' race Raa's Sukhi Khosla picked up his first win of the season with a 12:26. Raa's girls won their team division, as did the Raa boys, making for a Raa sweep.

The girls' race started in Fort Braden Park just after 6:00 pm. Raa runners Rebecca Clendinen and Lindsay Hughes were already leading the pack as the runners left the park, about a quarter mile into the run. Clendinen and Hughes gradually dropped their pursuers. By a mile and a half, only Madeline Horgan of Swift Creek was in striking distance, and then she, too, fell back. Over the last quarter mile Clendinen took command of the race, building up a 30-meter lead on Hughes. Clendinen crossed the line with the win, with Hughes finishing second in 15:07. Horgan hung on for third in 15:17, and Deer Lake's Alex Wallace placed fourth in 15:29. A week earlier at the Battle at Tom Brown, Swift Creek had come out ahead of Raa in the team standings, but at Fort Braden Raa was revenged, beating Swift Creek 33 to 49.

The boys raced next. Raa's Wil Luca and Sukhi Khosla jumped to the front, covering the first quarter mile in 77 seconds. After that the pace slowed, but Luca continued to run away from the rest of the field. Luca reached the mile in 5:54 with a substantial lead on Khosla. On the second mile, Khosla began to reel Luca in. When the leaders returned to the park with less than a half mile to go, Khosla had overtaken Luca. The two circled the park together. They were still running nearly side-by-side with 50 meters to go, but Luca was in distress. Khosla dashed past Luca to take the win. Luca struggled over the line in second at 12:33. The next four places were all Raa runners--Lewis Langston (3rd, 12:46), Devon Foster (4th, 12:47), Evan Francis (5th, 12:47), and Jason Benn (6th, 12:48). Cobb's Anthony Walker (7th, 12:51) was the first runner to crack Raa's monopoly on the top places. With five scorers in the top five spots, Raa scored the best possible total of 15 points, winning the meet. Montford beat out Swift Creek for the runner-up position, 84 to 91.

The Fort Braden meet was a new meet with a new course. The runners started at the lower end of Fort Braden Park then climbed north out of the park. The course then left the park on a narrow footbridge over a ravine. The bridge took the runners to the grounds of Fort Braden School. After completing a circuit of the school grounds, the runners returned to the park on the footbridge. After a loop around the park the race finished on the football field. The course was perched on the rim of Ochlockonee River valley, so the athletes had plenty of uphill and downhill to negotiate during their two-mile race.

The Fort Braden Meet was the second of the Leon County Schools' middle school cross-country season. That season is now half over, with only two meets remaining: the Everhart Invitational at Gretchen Everhart School on September 30, and the Championship Meet at the Apalachee Regional Park Trail on October 6.
